Official Jade Empire Thread

I can't imagine how many hits Gamespot's website has gotten today. Brilliant.

And I will wait til AFTER people on this board (and others) play this game before I make any decisions. I do think Greg K expects different things from games that others may not expect. Doesn't make him wrong; makes him different. However, I would like ALL reviewers to declare what version and how much of a game they have played when they write the review. This inclusion may take some of the mystery out of the reviews. However, I am sure all reviewers will rubber stamp this and say, "Played the final version all the way through."

Kasavin has dead on reviews. He rated a game I WORKED ON accurately with an 8.5ish when all the other sites were giving it 9's and 10's. I knew the game was not a 10 game yet it was getting 10's left and right from IGN, GI, OPM, 1UP, etc.

He is probably the only reviewer out there that I actually trust. Typically if he gives something a good review, it's on my buy list. period. :D

It isn't like 8.4 is a bad score anyway.

The last time I completely disregarded Kasavin was when I was just DESPERATE for some way to use my kongas. Turned out to be the best 2D platformer of this generation, hands down. You guys want some solid impressions? Don't trust IGN or Gamespot. Read your own, from forumers. (the kind that don't write for magazines)

Gerstmann was responsible for that craptastic review, a person I often disagree with on reviews *cough*THPS3*cough*. It wasn't so much the score of Jungle Beat that was absurd, but the fact the damn text didn't even touch upon the combo system.

I tend to like most of Kasavin's reviews, even on the rare occasion I don't agree on the numerical figure.

Love or hate Kasavin, I think all his reviews are informative.

He is one of the toughest critics out there, and he still thinks Jade Empire is a great game. Can't wait to get my copy Wednesday! :D

"If you thought this game was great, I think you should seriously reexamine your expectations. It's great. I know, it's tough to hear. But you deserve to know. There will be other games, and hopefully those will be great. But if you must pick this up, just know that it's great. Really."

Post of the day! A lot of GameSpot reviews read this way to me, though I generally do find their reviews to have a good balance of fact and opinion. It's the only site I regularly read for reviews other than my own. IGN's reviews, accuracy aside, are very poorly proofread and tend to ramble on for ten pages about games that aren't even very interesting.

i'm a pretty big fan of gamespot reviews, but this one seems out of whack. everyone else is giving it a 9+ score. anyway, the review didnt really decrease my expectations or anything, it just seems weird.

Found this tasty nugget on the IGN boards:

Not surprised. Milkman and Che didn't have very good things to say about this game over the weekend at the GAF forums. They were making fun of the IGN review. Greg K. also reads and posts at GAF and one might wonder whether or not there was a conspiracy to put together a round of anti-IGN reviews, especially since IGN got the exclusive first web review.

:lol

He is joking, though.

It's the text of Kasavin's review that worries me more than the score. He really doesn't seem enthusiastic about the game. If this turns out to be KOTOR-lite with an interesting but broken real-time combat system thrown in, I'm going to be let down.

Still, I'm definitely picking this up...Bioware writes dialogue interesting enough to make me dig through those conversation trees with glee, and I want to see what their first wholly original world is like.

Someone above said it best. IGN always rates too high, Gamespot always rates to low. Average the two and you have reality. And by looking at all the other sites review, that would seem to hold true. If you liked KOTOR, or you like Bioware, then you can't go wrong. It's rare to see a single player game these days go over 10 to 15 hours.

My only problem with Bioware is their games seem to have framerate issues. Also, they have mechanical transitions in their character animations. If they could just shore up those two issues they would be near perfection. I love their stories they come up with though. Can't wait to delve in this game's.

There will be some uproar about 1Up's score.

Burn 1UP!!!

Reminder: they gave 10 to Halo 2 and Doom 3 so think before you act.

Meh. Granted, I didn't play a whole lot of games in 2004(pretty much nothing between Ninja Gaiden and KOTOR 2), but KOTOR 2 was still the game I had the most fun with. I expect Jade Empire to be exponentially better. You poor bastards are just jaded because you have to review games for a living. Take it out on the next shitty Dragon Ball game next time. Give it a 2 and laugh as you get hatemail from vengeful, stupid DBZ fanz. But don't take it out on something that I will probably say is GOTY at the end of the year(unless there's a new game with a built in fellatio add-on accessory for the Revolution... maybe that's what Iwata meant about new controls).

I understand that mid eights is still a good score and all... but are you guys SERIOUSLY suggesting that FABLE is a better game? I know that each review is seperate and subjective... but come on. You KNOW people will make that connection. They're both ARPGs, on the same system. I don't think there is any feasible way that FABLE is better than JE.

the release date is the 14th correct? dont games usually come out on tuesdays? any chance of it being in on the 12th?

From what I gather from the reviews, the general idea is that the combat system is different and everything else is pretty much the same kind of thing from KotOR. Which I like. The company has never failed me before, and the average of reviews is around 90%. My pre-order is set in stone.

On GameSpot however, even though I find most reviews as informative and all the rest, I never find myself totally agreeing with the score, infact in some cases I totally disagree with some scores. All I can say is find someone or some publication that you trust in terms of reviews, then to pool them with as many other reviews as possible and come to your own conclusion based on your past gaming experience and tastes.

Continuing on with my personal opinion, I honestly don't get how GameSpot or IGN score this or that game the way they do, but do I give a fuck? No. I honestly don't get the uproar when games are scored this way or that even though the general gist of the review is right (Resident Evil 4 not getting Platinum on EGM), but do I give a fuck? No.

I actually remember a time when people went into stores and bought a game because it appealed to their tastes. I personally would not have experienced many great games this generation or the ones before if I hadn't taken a chance on certain titles that the media had either let ly forgotten or ripped to shreds. *coughBG&Ecoughpn03cough*

Virtually all the dozens of characters you'll meet during the course of your adventure have unique likenesses, rendered in a distinct and consistent art style

Im surprised no one mentioned this, one of KOTOR's glaring flaws to me.

Watched Kasavin's Video Review:

It kinda looks like a heavily Story/Dialogue drive Hack N' Slash with maybe slightly deeper than normal RPG elements.*

* It didn't really show that many RPG type elements in the review, but I assume they are their if the game is being listed as a RPG.

The EB near me is getting it today, after 3.

so far we have excellent, GOTY contender by quite a few reviews, to a good RPG by gamespot. I think I'll take my chances ;)

1up missed out on alot of hits by getting their review in after Kasavin. Dont let your boss know this fact Milk :lol

Judging from half the responses in this thread, it seems like a good chunk of people don't even bother reading the reviews. Straight to the score and discuss. Besides, it's nice to try and get the first review up (which wouldn't have happened in this case anyway), but I'm more concerned with making sure the things I want to say are in there over getting it out there first.

That was a really good review, btw. I look forward to seeing how the inevitable contrast to the narrative mechanics of KOTOR play out for me.

I hear ya. Hell, in some cases (take me for instance), people dont even go to the review site. They just participate in these threads for sheer enjoyment!

Kinda disapointed that theres not much more depth to the RPG side of things than just putting points into your gauges, the game would have been perfectly suited to ripping off shenmues system of learning combos, special moves etc and getting better at them as you use them.

Still i'll be picking up JE, cant resist a Bioware yarn.

Is it true that Jade Empire is only 20 hours? What kind of RPG is that?!?
It took me longer to complete MGS3. KOTOR was twice the lenght.

An action RPG. And besides, FFIV, an "0ld skewl" RPG hailed as a classic is also around that length. Doesn't prevent it from being a classic.

Ugh, this thread turned to crap fast...

Anyway, figured I should chime in with this as a heads up: if you're getting the Limited Edition version, put in the 2nd DVD first and select the "Install Limited Edition Content" option. Without doing this, Monk Zeng & the Spade Staff weapon style won't be available to you.

Wen't ahead and picked mine up :) the mixed reviews made it seem a LOT more interesting...

if anything, at least it's not another goddamn 'traditional fantasy' or 'anime' RPG!

Walked into EB this morning to get Midnight Club 3 and was surprised to find they aready had the game in stock, so I bought Jade Empire today as well. :D

Unfortunately, the copy I ordered from gamestop.com had already shipped, so I'll have to return that to EB tomorrow. Do they give cash back for unopened games?

Only had a chance to start JE, but I already like the combat a lot more than the demo. Something just felt "off" about the demo controls; the final game seems done very well, but I'll have to see how it feels in a real fight first; I took on two students and still ended up feeling like there was no real depth to the fights. Time will tell.

BTW, the Limited Edition is a two-dsic set. The game disc has the Conker demo, and the LE disc has the extra character/move set, plus a G4 video on the making of the game, and demos for Mechassault 2 and Forza.

I put the game on my Xbox HD and have been getting FAST load times...how is it playing off the DVD?
