Official Jan 2008 NPD Thread - HW Shortages + Spectacular SW

shortages can explain the wii and ds for sure and the 360 to an extent, but ps3 did pretty darn well. pretty darn well, indeed.

No kidding. Shortages or not that number is a huge victory for Sony.

This is really bad news for me, if the PS3 starts to sell well they will wait longer to drop it to $299

GJ Sony!!

And I wouldn't get too excited about the PS3 number, it's only 20K more than what they sold in January of last year. And improvement is an improvement, but it's still on the small side.

How are the 360 numbers compared to last january?

But they had one less week to do that, so the weekly number IS substantially improved.

I'm more surprised by Ps3 absolute numbers than relatively to the competition.
It did better than January 2007, a 5 weeks month coming right after a very shortaged launch with under a million units sold.

Good numbers overall.

Also, anyone know Rock Band's LTD?

Has it hit a million?

I do know it, and no, not yet. It is close though.

The PS2 still sells 264K.

The P. S. 2.

In what, its 8th year now? And not 99 dollars?

Wii and DS are not catching this system.

Well certainly not in the States.

A Moment like this.
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this.
Some people search forever for that one special NPD.
I cant believe its happening to me.
Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this.

It is unfair that Snah was robbed of this moment.

The PS3 is still less than the 360 last Jan.

Well, this was 4 weeks vs 5 last year..so that makes that improvement look a little better too ;)

Adjusting for month size, 360 was 235k..so PS3 was decently higher this year. 360 was relatively flat..which isn't as disasterously bad as it could have been if supply was really a HUGE problem.

I'm glad it didn't do well; its a great game but a step in the wrong direction for the series. I pray to the gaming gods we never get another sandbox-paradise again.

i'm glad burnout paradise is failing too, but not because of sandbox. its the no retry thing that makes it deserve its failure.

I would agree. While I don't think one month dictates a trend, I'm looking forward to next month's NPD to see if the PS3 can keep it's numbers up. These are like standard 360 numbers that it's doing, which is impressive.

It was 750k on 360 last month IIRC, so it's getting close. Probably next month it'll crack a million.

I find it really weird that the 360 and Wii versions of GH III managed to make the top 10, but the most popular version of the four (the PS2 one) did not.

My guess is that most of the people who be interested in the game already have a Wii/Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 and got one of those versions instead.

Your little month of victory will be short lived, considering the ps3 sold like shit over the holidays, it has plenty of inventory left to sell, it's business as usual for it.

Meanwhile Microsoft and Nintendo are experiencing hardware shortages due to total holiday domination over ps3.

This isn't a new trend, this is just logic.

OMG i am literally in shivers. This is so AMAZING! I have been saying from the beginning that 2008 would be Sony's comeback year. I am so bloody giddy right now, omg Sony WINS. :D :D :D

I think it's interesting GH for Wii seems to have longer legs than the 360 version.

That's because the music playing contingent on the 360 have to choose between GHIII and the vastly superior Rock Band.

And seriously, where are the PS2 numbers?

Anyway, some LTDs:

PS2: 41.39m
NDS: 17.9m
PSP: 10.7m
360: 9.38m
Wii: 7.65m
PS3: 3.52m

The numbers I have are different, buy only marginally.

PS2: 41.3m
NDS: 17.84m
PSP: 10.74m
360: 9.35m
Wii: 7.64m
PS3: 3.51m

PS3 number is surprisingly good, but it's hard to argue that 360 and Wii wouldn't have done much more without shortages (I haven't seen a 360 in stores since before Christmas). On it's own it's impressive though. PS3 software definitely a problem, also very disappointed in Burnout sales, I would've thought it sold much more, and the PS3 version didn't even chart.

PS3 numbers are similar to what everyone was predicting.

Looks like Microsoft and Nintendo stacked up for christmas and haven't got their asses back into gear.

The sales are close, and there is no Rock Band Wii to go up against. Rock Band outsold GH3 on X360. The two sold about 365K, which is more than the 239K GH3 sold on Wii.
