No Instructions. There's no real good indication of the most effective way to take down this boss. Chasing after the guy is practically fruitless because it's never certain where he is going to pop out of the water, breaking his scales is very difficult to do and provide little damage, and getting to the part where I have to 'go for the eyes!' keeps me in almost an endless loop of me flying close to his mouth only to get blown away over and over again.
.

I actually enjoyed this aspect. I'm so sick and tired of games giving me clear and exact instructions on how to do something. Makes the game feel pointless.

After 4 or 5 attempts I finaly beat the bastard.

It WAS a fairly annoying fight. Wasn't a big fan of it, and it felt like it was trying to pull off a GoW moment and failed miserably. However, after beating him, I found it very satisfying.

After playing even more, I'm really shocked at just how simple the handling has become. I've had no issues with both the control and the mission objectives. One of the missions I finished last night was the raid on Mokai (I'm three missions beyond that). It was chaotic, yet easy to handle. While it appeared that there was much going on, it was never difficult to grasp what you were supposed to do. I did not lose a single Manta nor did I miss a 180.

That level in particular highlighted potential complaints, however. For those who were unable to grasp the controls, the chaotic appearance of such a mission would become a real problem and the frustration would grow into hate. It was simple; fly ahead and take out the artillery en route to the city, take out the spot lights and additional artillery within the city, then defend your mantas. It seems more chaotic than it actually is (obviously intended to make the mission feel like an extensive battle).

My only complaint with the mission was the framerate. This was the second mission where I felt that the framerate often dropped much too low. Anyone know if the game runs better in native 720p as opposed to the 1080p mode they've included? I might try that.

The following missions were pretty enjoyable as well. The desert mission was a great change of pace and actually looked really nice. I had no issues finding my way through the desert, fighting the wasp enemy, chasing the fire bombers or taking out the large war beasts. It felt simple and fun.

I'm enjoying this more than the Rogue Squadron games, actually. I fully believe that the reviews were much too harsh. I also believe this game is not for everyone and requires the player to learn and adapt to several new systems without ever receiving proper instruction. This is a serious problem...

I agree with everything you've said. The controls are difficult but in a way that is satisfying when you really get a handle on them.

I've been playing the game on 720p, and the only 'bad' framerate drops have happened only briefly, and usually when you're looking at very litt.e, then turn around and have everything in front of you. At which point it catches back up shortly after.

I am quite impressed with this game. Technically its amazing, the
giant water snake
its almost on CG level its very amazing. But sometimes its a mess.

The controls are certainly difficult, sometimes I forget Im playing on motion control and try to fly with analog. Also this is the first game ever that makes me feel dizzy, I wonder how the japanese will react to it :lol

But I like it. Its not a keeper but its not as bad as the reviews point. They probably couldnt be bothered by the difficult controls to go through with it.

Also I have yet to encounter a framerate issue. I am not a framerate whore so maybe I just dont mind? SOTC was a bigger mess in that regard.

quite enjoying this after the first level...no real control problems yet....graphics are incredible

Yea, I got to play this at Playstation store. Played about 3-4 levels (and completed most of the tutorial levels).

Wow, what a mess :lol

I'm glad I didn't buy it. I didn't have any problems with the controls really. I found them easy to use after a bit of practice. The main clincher is the camera. It's super buggy. On the bridge level, I'm chain killing ice dragons and it snaps all over the place. Also, when your far away the ground troops have 2 frames of animation, which I thought wouldn't be noticeable, but I did notice it!

When you die it just feels kind of strange to pop right back in the game again, I almost didn't know what the hell happened at first. I also dislike the placement of the health bar, I think the rage and health bar sides should have been reversed.

The game does look really nice in some ways, but really unattractive in other ways. I don't know what it is, but it does get all muddy. In screenshots it's hard to tell. The scale is truly beautiful but it doesn't save this game.

Maybe it's worth a rental.

The sad thing is I was super excited about this game. It's a shame that it didn't turn out so well. I hope that they can do something with the tech, or maybe fix the game for a sequel? It's hard to say exactly how they should fix the gameplay, but it's a very flawed game.

Pretty much my impressions, too. I don't understand how people can complain about the controls. They work great for me, and are actually the best part of the game. Once I learned how to do the 180, everything felt smooth and natural.
on the other hand, the game is a mess visually. They have highly detaile bits and pieces (the dragons, buildings) slapped together in a dull fractal landscape. The texture work and the lighting are all over the place: sometimes is difficult to see what's going on with all the muddy textures and the backlighting, even in cutscenes!
This project has all the marks of a troubled, rushed job that went through diferent art directors and designers. On the positive side, the scope of the game is pretty impressive and the gameplay is actually kind of fun, if unoriginal.
I am actually looking forward to a sequel. Given enough time to fix all the problems and to polish the graphics, this series could turn out quite well. The concept has lot of potential, it just needs to be implemented properly.

For all those who wanted to know what the story was without playing it:

I'm still waiting for the LAIR summary, tanod.

Let's see if I can remember.

You have 5 primary players in the game:
-The diviner who is the religous leader in Asylia.
-The council who governs Asylia.
-Rohn who is part of the SkyGuard of Asylia.
-Rohn's friend, Loden, who is also part of the sky guard.
-Kobra Commander (actual name is Koba Kai but just to make it more fun for me to type out this drek, I'm taking narrative liberty) is the leader of the tribal people, the *sounds like Orokai (like LOTR)*

A thousand or so years ago, this volcano bubbles up in the middle of this country and it splits the country in two, creating two unique cultures. One that focuses on technology and artistry and lives in cities (Asylia), and one that is more tribal and lives in the mountains. Asylia has most of the arable land.

Despite their cultural differences/focuses, their level of technology is pretty similar and the Asylians are surprised by this fact early in the game.

At the beginning of the game, the Orokai attack Asylia. The likely reason is to obtain food for their people. The Asylians fight them off and counterattack.

The Diviner believes that the Orokai are the ones who brought the "curse" of the volcano to the land. He wants to destroy them to fix it.

The council resolves to make peace with the Orokai and they set up a meeting at this big bridge that connects the two countries. Rohn and Loden are there along with the head of the council and Kobra Commander's dad.

Before they sign the treaty, Loden kills both Kobra Commander's dad (the leader), the council member, the Skyguard captain, knocks out Rohn out and runs away back to Asylia.

You later learn that Loden did so on the orders of the Diviner, who he is a follower of.

The rest of the Asylians (not knowing the real truth of what has happened), make Loden the new Skyguard captain and through unknown methods, the rest of the council gets killed as well.

The diviner takes over Asylia and mounts an offensive against the capital city of the other side. Rohn obediently but slightly grudgingly follows orders from Loden.

Kobra Commander and his dragon is captured by Asylia around this time. Rohn sets dragon free against orders.

After they win the battle at the capital city and the Orokai city is all but razed to the ground, there are people on the ground running into a building that is supposedly an armory.

Loden orders Rohn to destroy it and he does.

Rohn enters the building afterwards and finds that it was actually a church. He walks up to one of the charred corpses and takes blanket/shawl off of it and finds a dead woman's skeleton holding a baby's skeleton. :'(

Rohn gets pissed. Loden "kills" Rohn and his dragon (who was trying to defend him) when he gets confronted by Rohn.

Rohn doesn't actually die. Gets up and starts to fly his wounded dragon to find survivors of the Orokai. Before they find anybody, dragon dies. :'(

Somehow, Kobra Commander's dragon finds Rohn and takes him to the survivors.

Rohn joins other side. They regroup and counter attack the Asylians.

First they need to rescue Kobra Commander from this prison in an area known as the Maelstrom. Coolest looking environment in the game. :D

Rescue goes fine and they attack the capital city, and take out Loden and the Diviner.

The volcano erupts and your dragon has to bomb the volcano vents shut otherwise the Asylia capital city will be toast. You do so and the game ends.

Happy bunnies, flowers and well wishes abound. We can live in peace with the Kobra Commander and his people. Rohn becomes King or something.

Everybody lives happily after, unless you're the person who played the game who wants to rip the disc out of your system to run it over with your car and gouge your eyes out for making yourself play through a terrible mess of a game.

The end.

I think I got the important stuff in there. See my criticisms in the Lair thread for why this game is so terrible and cumbersome to play.

I'm glad I only rented it. Thanks reviewers!!

Maybe there's a Lair: International version coming.

Seriously, they've been extremely quiet after the US release. Well, probably because of all the negativity surrounding the game, but might they have a trick up their sleeves with the European version? I haven't obviously played the game, but I'd kill for a fixed and fine-tuned game with analog controls after all the stuff I've read about the game.

I'm one of the very few people who really enjoyed the game.
The controls were a little tricky for me at the beginning, but after getting used to them I found it really satisfying to perform awesome looking actions. The story is quite deep and amazing, as is the music score.
Graphics are absolutely at the top of anything else released so far, up close textures are ultra sharp, yet the levels are miles long and there's loads and loads of crap going on around you. The framerate could have been better, while it's not dropping into unplayable levels, it is still really distracting when suddenly everything goes slower and isn't as responsive.
The gameplay itself was exactly what I expected, flying a dragon and tearing things up, no surprises.

I'd rate it as a 8/10, it's kinda like a halfway stop between Reign Of Fire, which is a fun saturday morning movie, and LotR, which is an epic masterpiece.
By the way GT review of Lair is complete trash.

I enjoy Lair. Got my first Platinum yesterday... it is difficult but I think I was as frustrated as I was playing Rogue Squadron trying to get the best medals.

I also believe the European version will have different controls. Engelbrecht would have to be barking mad not to fix some of the most glaring issues for the Euro release, otherwise there'll be another round of scathing reviews and even more sales down the drain. I also wonder if those good Famitsu scores were based on a different build of the game than the one that was released in the US.

after 4 hours of play so far, man, i am impressed. the scale of this game is huge. i really like the game so far. i do understand people having controlling issues. but i am used the sensors even in heavenly sword.

Hey guys im seriously torn between getting HS or Lair but I think im gonna get both (I dont mind motion controls and I like challenges). I havent bought a game in a while so ill treat myself. So im sold on HS, but one thing I have to know, how is the story in lair? Worth playing through to see it? And is the framerate problems/occasional screen tearing really bad? thanks.

The framerate doesn't make it unplayable, you won't loose battles because of it. But occasionally it can get annoying.

The story is solid. HS's story is better, but Lair's was ok/good.

hey its not bad...the scale is very impressive as are the graphics...control can be frustrating, but you can definitely get used to it...story is entertaining enough...there are definitely a couple of irritants with the controls, but its not that bad

For those that have actually played it ... what is the consensus?

Worth the price of admission?
Yeah, I think it was. Like some people said: the game has beautiful graphics and a fantastic soundtrack. Also, I personally had no problems controlling the game. It was just a matter of adjusting to a new type of control and after some playing I found it very comfortable. The story is also quite good and there is a lot of bonus material.

A very good experience for me personally. 8.5/10

I imported it from the US at crazy prices, and didn't like it much at all, although the ambition was commendable.
