Good point, and I agree, but even then, part of being a good leader and team player is not putting your team at risk by playing too injured. I mean, he was constantly saying, "I gave our team the best chance to win." That's completely throwing Cousins under the bus. Without Cousins we don't win against the Ravens or the Browns. It's really both his and Shanahan's fault, but would Andy Reid, Tom Coughlin, any other NFL coach had handled it differently?
If you're in there, and everyone with eyes can see you are limping around, your coaches are sending you a message that you really are the best hope for a W if they don't take you out. It's the player's job to play. It's the coach's job to determine when it's no longer a good decision to play. Coaches have the power to stop this. It's like a corner not throwing in the towel for his fighter. Of course the fighter is gonna fight until the bell rings or he gets put down, but the corner has the obligation to stop it if his fighter is going to get hurt. Except this is worse because the coach has another fighter waiting in the wings and other players to pick up the slack. He put his franchise player at risk for a wildcard game in his rookie season. Unbelievable. This isn't even for the belt. It's for some tournament.
And of course the rookie is gonna go back in. Imagine the shit he would take if he took himself out. It's not even like he's a vet like Cutler. A rookie taking himself out who was voted the leader of the team? It probably wasn't even an option in his mind. I could never defend Shanny if he was my coach. Especially if I had a seemingly good guy and a potentially great player like RGIII.
