:lol Man it's funny how many madden threads we have going. We need one just to set up games and talk trash. Matrix loves my Ravens defense...the 46 is so TASTY. Sorry Ram, I'm heading off, so I can't play you, otherwise I would. I'm already getting tired of the random logos in the middle of the field. Come on EA!

Yeah, really good games. I just couldn't stop the big play for anything. Dante almost had me back in the game, and then I go 4 and out =/ Was glad to see his X-Factor celebration is in the game. I giggled like a little schoolgirl when I saw it.

Tonight has been horrible. Lost 4 straight. Lost to hgplayer cause I missed a beyond easy fieldgoal, and then DM is my fucking kryptonite. I always play like shit against him.

Loving the game though

that fluff wont fly against me and you know it. we're on a collision course buddy, and only one of us can survive

p.s. me

:lol gg cp, i can only laugh at that. i dont care about losing to be honest but holy crap something was up in that game. chiefs D was playing like the fucking ravens or something!

the funniest part was when i had brandon lloyd wide open, so i lob it to him and he goes and stands out of bounds to catch the ball! why would you do that!

but at least i did get 2 safeties...

next time it will be different!

Yeah, GG. I almost died laughing when that happened with Lloyd.

You should have ran more. You were averaging something like 5.4 yards per carry and then just stopped. So I pretty much stayed in the zone for the rest of the of the game.

Those safties made me angry... I PUSHED THE DAMN BUTTON TO PASS!

i was going to run but then kbar got injured and i want to get all the experience i can with passing before the league starts. but you're right i should have run more... i was using the pass balance playbook for the first time and i dislike the runs in that book. it has some of the same formations as the 49ers playbook, but the runs themselves are crappy in design.

how could you do that to alex? you are only going to incur more wrath come season time. i feel bad for you :(

OK, just checking in with my Redskins for this years' league. GGs last night to dskillz, Malley, Bob, and FMT. Very interesting to see how each of you has adapted to 2006 so far. I've seen a variety of approaches to the vision cone (and my hat is off to anyone who tries manually scanning).

Slo and I were discussing some of the issues we've seen so far:

"Mario running" (getting caught on blockers/other players when trying to negotiate tight gaps or manuevering to the outside) is still an issue

Playbooks have changed dramatically (at least the Redskins playbook has)

the control setup for defaulting vision cone to dead center (R trigger+A button) requires you to bring up the high cam for a brief second, allowing the player to see who your primary receiver was. a minor quibble I guess, but I'd like to be able to set the cone to default all the time without needing to do this and just hike the ball to keep the D on its toes with as little giveaway into my playcalling as possible.

now for the good stuff:

penalties are called more often and (so far) seem to be at the correct times. I majorly interfered with a pass from (I think FMT?) in the end-zone and I got a PI call. Last year's game I would have gotten away with it.

"Stats bar"--very helpful at a glance (top of screen)

better passing in traffic and more realistic catches: precision passing actually seems to work as intended. I threw a completion into double coverage leading Thrash ahead and deeper than two defenders....another time I need a quick completion over the middle so I bullet passed low and Moss slid on his knees to make the reception. Many of my curls pass plays also seem to benefit from this improved pass control.

Gotta run to a meeting now, but I'll be back with more comments....

Nice to see you around Redskins fan ;)

I still think false start is called too much, but penalties are much improved overall. Sometimes the DB will go into an odd catching animation and result in PI (I only saw it once though)

I've been manually moving the vision cone a lot because it seems to be quicker than R+ reciever after the snap. It's tough, but much better once you get the hang of it. Oh if only I wasn't stuck with Boller's tiny cone.

Now two questions

I'm not sure I have shading down correctly...matrix was running outside posts (cheeser) with the slot WR and I would press Y to bring up the icons, then press his button (black) and then R (if he was on the right side) to guard against the outside post, but it didn't seem to do anything. I've heard it works so I'm not going to panic. My question is of course am I doing it right?

Doubling....In the same game I saw matrix control a LB and use a safety to double my WR, just like last year, without switching off...He says he doesn't know how he did this, but as far as I know, you have to be controlling the player you want to double with this year. Very odd...does anyone know how he might have done that?

Do you mean that he didn't have to briefly switch to the guy presnap to do the double team coverage audible? If that's the case I'd like to know how to do that too. It's too cumbersome to have to select the guy you want to double with before calling that, especially if the offense is snapping right into their play. They should have a way to have the computer decide which guy will double.

Maybe he did......it's the only logical thing I can think of. But he "didn't remember"! and I never saw his control leave the LB

Pass Interference is definitely back in the game. I think between myself and Ror, we had 4 or 5 of them. Even on some plays that there was hardly any interference.

I can be competitive with Matrix and Shadow but FMT dominated me :lol

Thoughts:

- The cone has made me develop a bad habit of just comitting to one WR. I just can't seem to scan recievers with R or the stick and avoid getting sacked. If I had to vote now, I would rather play without it :lol
- The only way I could even slow FMT down was blitzing. In fact, he barely scored on me after I started blitzing every play. This might be a problem in league if it's abused...

I'll play some more tonight and see how it goes :)

Thanks Fiddy :)

IIRC, shading is done by Y+icon+Right stick left or right. The offensive tutorial from the main menu describes it. I just watched it once last night so I'm not entirely sure.

Double coverage, again, IIRC, should be Y+icon+Right on the D-pad. You're supposed to do this with the player you want to double cover though, so I don't see how he did it without switch to the safety (he could use the black button to reassign LBs coverage).

ive been blitzed before and had success. but, when you have a decent lead then moochball takes me over. it isn't too difficult to pass against the blitz, but the 49ers have a poor offensive line, an inaccurate qb and no wr's, so it's not exactly easy with them :(

I think I might have had man lock on,I'm not sure if that played a part in it,then again I dont recall doing it :lol :(

I finally know how to do slide protection and I'm getting the hang of the cone, you will not be competitive after I put in hours of practice! :( Btw have you been practicing your FG's and extra points? ;)

i have to say i was surprised by konex's level of play. he was complete and total garbage every time i had ever played him in madden before, but he was actually playing competently last night (even though i handled him easily). good work koney... you have finally become one of us

Yea it shocked the shit out of me,he still needs massive work on kicking. Then again I cant talk,I was god awful last year at kicking when I first started playing.

:lol oh that was you I was playing against? some of you guys have such a different gamertag from your forum name I dont even know who Im playing half the time.

our game was good but whats up with the overtime rules? I thought it was just one quarter? thats the only reason I was letting the clock run down near the end of that first OT period.

I missed that one FG too and I thought I had it. the power was just right and I stopped it just inside the sweet spot at the bottom. Ive had FG tries go in with worse. like Ive said before I hate the kicking game. I saw you had a couple bad punts but I think I managed to nail most of mine.

I swear I felt like I was gettin my ass handed to me the whole game. I was so surprised I came out of that one with a win.

hey whats up with the way some of you guys run the ball? like youll take the hand off and start running to one side of the line then do some dipsy do move and cut back to the other side. I guess you have to have good run blocking to pull it off but I mean is it something that just happens on every play or are you consciously trying to pull it off that way? it just looks kinda strange to me and I would never thik of making some of the cuts you guys do since Im usually concentrating on hitting the holes my blockers are supposed to be making for me.

oh and to anyone that sent me an invite the last couple of nights and I didnt reply or declined I just wanna say sorry but I tend to leave the game on even when i dont have time to play at any given moment. keep sending me invites if you see me though :D

To follow up on hgplayer's comments on running, I should caution all of the Madden noobs (and maybe even some of the vets?) to not outrun your blockers. I keep forgetting it myself, but it's crucial:

Don't jam down the A button as soon as you get the handoff. Your back will go so fast he'll be outside the entire line and any TEs in no time. Wait until a block occurs, then give it the gas. It also will throw off your opponent if you are good at changing the speed at which your back moves (as well as throwing in well-timed jukes, spins, etc). I know this all sounds obvious, but in a game situation it's hard to keep your cool sometimes when you're facing long yardage and you need to make something happen.

Also, don't forget the right stick left or right before the snap reverses the direction of the run play (good if you have stacked the line to one side and your opponent buys into it and moves his LBs over to man coverage).

use the pressure sensitive juking to run! i can't stress it enough

btw, keep the "flip run play" to a minimum, cause if i personally see your QB tap the back of his leg, i already know you're running, and right at the start of the play i will tell my D to play the run

Well, a possible way to counter this could be to also do a lot of playmaker blocking(because when you flip the run it highlights the RB/HB/FB as a playmaker); IIRC this will give the same visual indicators, hopefully masking my attempt to flip a run in a pass friendly formation.

That's not what he means. What he is saying is that when you playmaker flip the run play, the quarter back will double tap one of his legs. If you're playing D online against someone, you will never see who is playmakered where, or hot routed, etc.

On that same note: FMT, you are slightly off. I can playmaker a receiver and it's the same motion for the QB on a passing play, IIRC. I may be wrong but I am pretty sure about this. Playmaker the intended receiver though with the right analog stick, not hot route and the QB will double tap his leg. I remember using it a couple of times against guys here who play safety and CB.

As a graduate of the Moochball Institute of Higher Level Football, I say just stick with the run, never give up!

Because of the dink and dunk passes involved in advanced moochball, I think I can safely say that Ravensball, running 80% of the time, relies even more on the running game. Moochball is a conservative potpourri, while Ravensball is dirtier than jamal's first night in the slammer.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Doesn't he do the leg tap on any playmaker function, whether it's flip run, block change, or WR route change?

I rely heavily on PA myself,if my PA works,I can vision cone with pure ease,I'm still working on the straight up passing ;)

I think what you guys are referring to when you say PA should actually be referred to as DA or Death Action. everytime I use it my QB gets creamed. theres almost always someone that makes a b-line for him no matter what.

You now belong to FMT.

yup I dont use PA at ALL

i estimate you have a 30% chance of NOT getting sacked on a playaction... from my experience anyways. they should have slowed down the rush just a tad this year, but what can you do :/

Considering your TE and running game I'm amazed you don't. You also hold the proud distinction of actually using 3 WRs less than me. I thought I was the most conservative, but malley has me beat! I haven't got sacked that much on PAs...at least compared to normal passing plays. I'd say I get sacked less on PA passes than on regular passes :(

I was reading through the thread and FMT says manual blitzing with DBs is banned...

Question: Is that hot blitzing before the snap or actually controlling them to the QB? I've been hot-blitzing a lot and it seems to be a good way to stop guys who love to throw to the RB in the flat (Shadow :D )

Is it cool if your D bites on a PA to then take control of a LB that was blitzing once he is already past the line?

yes. the problem with manual blitzing is that YOU are turboing past the offensive lineman who is helpless, but if the CPU LB already beat him, the QB is fair game.

I use LBs, so sometimes when the play starts the CPU will force me to run in for a blitz when I dont even want to because the man I'm supposed to cover is staying in to block. Pisses me off! -_-

I don't like to control defenders too much in Madden cos I always blow tackles. I just call the plays, use the hit stick and swat or INT the ball :D

that is why you will fail in the league! you need to be a play maker! jgar is a playmaker!
