Official Mario 64 DS thread

stuck my tongue deep inside Atlus' cookies
Mods, lock this if you must, but I ran a search and although there's many threads devoted to this game (and the DS launch), THIS thread has been oddly missing. I don't want to wade though a bunch of Feel the Magic posts to discuss mario (in the launch thread), and all the other SM64DS threads were about it's scores, etc.

~~~
Anyway, yeah. I got the game this evening and have gotten about 11 stars right now. First thing I noticed is that the game DOES look quite a bit nicer. Much better textures, for one. Not sure what else nintendo has done to make it easier on the eyes, but it's obvious there have been other graphical improvements I just can't put my finger on.
Overall, although its been a positive experience, I wouldn't say it's "WHOAMG AWESOME!" or anything. Some of the minigames available at the start are better than others, and it's taking me a while to adjust to the 'touch' control setting (which is clearly the only way to go).
After these 11 stars I don't have any major control problems anymore (no more missed jumps or anything), but it's still not as smooth for me as it (hopefully) will be. It's too much work for me to want to collect red coins at this point, for example. I can't put my finger on it, but controlling Yoshi still seems a bit too laborous for me and it negated a little of the fun factor. I fully expect the problem to disappear after another 11 stars have been collected, though. Every one I got, the game was easier to control. It's just a shame that no matter how good the controls turn out to be after I've adjusted they'll never work 100% as well as an analogue stick.
It's cool that you experience a new boss fight so early in the game, and was certainly something I wasn't expecting. The fight itself was so/so, but just the fact that it was SM64.... but NEW, was really exciting to me. Same for the star switches in jolly rodger bay and the snow level.
As for the minigames, the coolest thing about them, imo, is that not only does every character have a semi-different theme, but they score differently. Luigi has coins and they're more for fun, not high scores. Wario's are all about score/time. Mario all about clearing as many levels as you can, etc. Although I haven't unlocked many I 2nd those of you saying that Wario's slingshot game is the shit. As I'm typing this I'm getting a very strong urge to play it more.
I think that's about it. Anyone want to give me any spoiler-free impressions from later in the game? Especially regarding whether another couple hours with the controls eliminates that feeling of not wanting to explore and collect red coins.
When it comes to the graphics, was the game ported or remade entirely? Because I noticed the game has a bit of a different look to it...
A little a both. Textures are more detailed, different colors, the models and animation have been upped signifcantly
Some of the old levels have new areas too.
I agree, after around star 8 or 9, you get used to the touchscreen. The trick is to remember to lift your thum off the screen when you want to stop on a dime. The natural tendency is to try to center your tumb when you need to balance your character on some ledge...don't. best way is to get him on there and just lift your thumb.
It actually feels more accurate on the touchpad than on an analog.
Character models are more complex and look better. Many of the N64 game's flat-shaded polies have been fully textured now. So the game actually looks more realistic than before. Still quite cartoonish, of course. Some backgrounds have changed, graphically, as well.
I guess it depends on your definition of a port. All the levels I've been in so far have had changed graphics (BEYOND just textures), changed layouts, and changed puzzles. Some of them are minor, but they're changes nonetheless.
I'm sure they worked from SM64 code, but beyond that I have no idea.
I actually like the addition of the map. I'm pretty sure I'm alone here, though, as I also think that the D-Pad control isn't terrible, I'm playing the game as well as I did on the N64.
I posted in the main DS thread about my difficulties with the touch control, but after a dozen or so more stars I'm getting used to it. I can do flips pretty well now, I'm landing most of my jumps, and I'm just overall much more conmofortable with the nub. It's not perfect, but it is better than I initially gave it credit for.
Agreed. I mentioned it in a thread a few days ago. The thumbstrap is a new way for analog control. Not as good as a stick, but definitely better than nothing.
Holy shit. They brought back the Super Mushrooms!
Yeah that rocked, and crushing 8 objects as Super Mario for a 1-up was a nice throwback too! I'm loving some of the new power-ups for this version, and I like how they replaced (minor power-up spoilers ahead)
the wing-cap icon with a feather icon. It looks much cooler and brings the Mario World tie-in. Also Yoshi eats and spits out fire, so when the little fireballs hop across the walk in Lethal Lava Land, Yoshi can just swallow them. Mario DS rocks.
:)
Mario 64 DS has 15 levels. Didn't the original have only 9? I might actually be thinking of BK, for some reason.
Yeah, yeah! They should have called this game Super Mario Bros. 64 DS, because it almost has a certain little something classic that the original lacked!
"Thumb Bandana" control is pretty good once you get used to it.
It feels more like the N64 version controlling this way, but it's just not as precise.
How does the game control when using the “thumb bandana”?
Yeah, it takes about 10 stars and you're basically on the same level as the analog stick.
The graphics I feel are significantly downgraded from the N64 version though. The lack of texture filtering really makes the game look choppy.
OTOH, the character models are more detailed.
I never thought the N64 "blur" was a big problem on Nintendo's own games which tended to have more "flat, bright colors" anyway.
But I'd be lying if I said I felt it looked as good or better than the N64 version does. Some moments, like going into the door with the "Sunken Ship" painting and zooming in to the fish swimming around in the aquarium just doesn't have the same "wow" factor, and yes I have recently played the N64 version.
The thumbstrap does get the job done for the most part. The control isn't as fluid or as smooth as the N64 version though. You have to put a little bit more thought into how you're controling your character.
Choppy? This game seems to have a much higher (and consistent!) framerate, than the N64 version.
I actually like the graphics better, for the most part. Up close, textures can get ugly, but since I play on the farthest out zoom anyway, everything just looks cleaner and slick. I also wasn't a huge fan of the original's mostly flat shaded polies.
Choppy, erm I guess the word I should use is "jaggy" (ohs nos!).
Super Mario 64 had a really clean/colorful look to it IMO, Mario 64DS looks more jaggy/pixellated.
Mario 64 DS does look a little bit better in motion than in screenshots, but actually the screens are pretty accurate to what it does look like.
The frame rate is faster in the DS version though. You can swing the camera all the way around Mario and the frame rate basically never hiccups.
Just started playing my DS along with SM64DS and MPH:FH (FHUTA hasn't come in yet) and while I'm having a really good time, I just keep thinking about how much better this thing would be with an analog clicky-stick. Oh well!
*keeps playing*
Really having fun with it so far, even though I've only gotten a few stars (4 now). I never played the N64 original all the way through and so I'm having a total blast (plese keep the spoilers down for little old me, folks.)
Has pretty solid control I'd say, actually. Still getting used to the "thumbandanna" but it seems pretty smooth. It's no analog stick but it's certainly close enough.
Maybe I'll try the stylus and "dual mode" and see what that's all about.
Nice graphics, definitely cleaner than the N64 version, no texture filtering or not. And the framerate is excellent, unlike the N64's hiccups here and there.
I thought the game controlled like ass when I started playing, but I've gotten the hang of it after a few stars and the touch mode + thumb strap is actually better in SOME cases than the control stick. One of the prime examples is the long slide in the snow level. I used to fall SO much (takes me a dozen tries, usually) when using the control stick on the n64, but I did it on my first try with the thumb stick. It's like you have more control, but less response time. It's alot less useful for killing those sleeping piranha plants though.
Holy crap, I just got ROYALLY addicted to Mario's ice-sliding shell game. I think I just played that one minigame for a good 45-60 minutes. It's all about lining up the green shells, baby :D :D
There are definitely new levels/areas, although I have no idea what the overall total would be.
There's a new beach level with the Super Mario Sunshine music for instance, that's pretty cool.
I will say this -- Super Mario 64 is still a great game even today. I think it has to do with the structure and amount of thought put into the game. It's just still fun and is definitely one of the greatest games ever made.
It makes a surprisingly good portable game too. You can play, maybe grab a star or two or have a quick go in the mini-games if you just have a few minutes of down time or you can burn a lot of time for a more extended play session.
I have Mario 64 DS and Super Mario 3 Advance (GBA slot) in my DS, I can just alternate between the two ... it's pretty nifty.
I think so. I'm dying to try out multi, but no one else has a DS. My brother tried to get one later on in the day but it was sold out everywhere.
I live in eastern Iowa, and there's DS's everywhere. I was in two Targets today, and both of them had 10 in full view, and who knows how many I couldn't see. I was also in an EBGames that said they'd only sold about half their order, and and indy game shop had a few left too.
If someone needs me to get them a DS, I will
Holy shit
Goomboss is friggin awesome, the best Mario boss I've played in a LONG time.
This game is rocking.
You really thought so? I thought that boss fight was kind of weak.
Just rescued all the characters (except peach)... I was really happy and suprised at how cleverly Wario and Luigi were hidden.
I haven't found luigi yet :( I got 30 stars and the game was like "did you rescue luigi?!?" and I was like "fuck" and have been looking since...
From what I've heard, Luigi is found in a suitably appropriate level. I'm looking myself but still nothing. Game on I shall.
NM, I JUST found him.
New boss spoilers
The ghost fight in the mirror actually gave me some trouble. 3 hunks of life per hit is kinda harsh. I did beat him though, and I thought it was a pretty awesome boss. Much better than the giant goomba
I've unlocked Luigi, if you guys want to know how then I'll say (in spoiilers obviously). It was just random luck that I did it though, I'm sure some people will be stumped for a long time.
EDIT: Pfff, that boss gave you trouble? Just kidding. yeah it was cool, though I don't think I got hit.
Oh and they're right on the appropriate place thing.
I got Luigi after a hint from a friend... although I -thought- he was in that level. The annoying thing is that I was planning on returning to the level ANYWAY to check in that one location...
Oh my Christ. Talk to the Toads as Luigi. It's hilarious.
"What?! You're Luigi? The world's most inept and least charismatic brother? Wow! Can you introduce me to Mario? Huh? Did we meet the other day? I totally forgot. You're not very memorable. I guess your brother got all the charisma in the family, huh!"
Just unlocked Wario as well.
The secret star you can get by going through the mirror is awesome. I was like "hmm... I wonder what'll happen if I go out the door..." :) :) :)
What the hell? The game won't let me be yoshi anymore! His door is locked sad.gif
I need to him to get some stars, dammit....
I have 55 stars at the moment.
Yoshi doesn't have a door. Walk through the door of the character you are using.
Well don't I feel stupid. Who is the 4th door then?
Is princess peach a playable character?
