Official Metal Gear Solid 4 TGS Thread

They should use the textures on the tips of Snake's fingers for the bandanna because it looks like he's wearing a rubber bandanna right now.

That's neat. Didn't notice that.

I saw some high-quality footage of the trailer in the 1-up show for TGS2k6, and man, those screenies don't do the game justice. The ground textures are superb in the footage I saw.

The MK-II seems to be using stealth actually, it doesn't have a static texture pattern like Snake has over him, it's more like its transparent.

The enemy is just a stupid blind dumbass, like every other soldier in a MGS game. MGS4 won't be realistic at all(like some wanted, I bet).

That little robot is pretty silent if I remember from first TGS trailer. Probably even more silent when he's not moving very fast.

*edit* I doubt you would be able to do that every single time with every enemy, but it would also be stupid to not be able to do it at all, it's much too fun to not have it in the game :P

BINGO! Nice eye man. MK-II is plain "transparent" there. Wow.

- Hideo Kojima on MGS1:
"There's no plan for a sequel. "

- Hideo Kojima on MGS2:
"There won't be MGS3, and if it does, I won't be involved. Seriously"

- Hideo Kojima on MGS3:
"I will left the Metal Gear Solid saga. Someone else will take the role of director. I'm sick of Snakes."

- Hideo Kojima on MGS4:
"There is No place for Hideo. This time, I will kill off Snake FOR REAL. You have to belive me! I SWEAR TO GOD!

:lol

Yeah that video shot stood out for me as well last night or this morning when I was watching it. The texture in the suit and his face look so nice. Even the vest and how his little storage components are modeled looks great.

My favourite shot. Snake looks almost real.

See, I don't understand why Konami released those shots with placeholder textures.
In this pic posted by CosmicGroinPull, you can clearly see that the textures are very nice and with the stone-texture camo, the suit still has normalmapping, while the pics released by Konami didn't had normalmapping, looks flat and textures were considerable worse than in the trailer.

No doubt the game will look amazing once it's finished.

The ground textures are awful though

:lol I'm sure that for MGS3 that he really did want to hand the mantle down to someone else (it was even the theme of the the game!), but everyone thought it was too great of a task, so he did it himself. Same gimmick every time, but there's always an imporvement.

That's generally the case in every game. It's the one area that seems hardest to get down especially when you're talking about outdoor areas.
But they aren't PS2 quality. I've seen quite a few games get it right though.

Because it has some bad textures here and there, duh. Nothing else really matters, it's all about those textures.

But doesn't even Gears of War have bad textures here and there?

Snake even has some great self-shadowing going on in that pic above. And to me look as great as he did at last TGS when people said that he was the best human model in a video game in history.

It's not really just that the textures are bad. It's that they were much better 4 months ago at E3

I don't see how. Then again, I don't compare videos and go on bad texture scavenger hunts, so you may be right. ;)

It was an overall downsize in texture quality, I noticed it as soon as the first pictures were released.

Some of it's plain nasty. Some looks like plain placeholders, and I have faith it'll improve dramatically with Team Kojima at the helm though.

So why do I keep hearing people say all over the internets that this game got downgraded? :lol
People are basing that on the pics and not the trailer.
There's a significant difference between those two.
When watching the trailer none of the textures were distracting
(due to low resolution), on the contrary, the textures looked nice, sure some
were from a lower res, but nothing disastrous.

I got the impression that many people were dissapointed after seeing the pics.
I suggest all people who were dissapointed to watch the trailer (the ruliweb HD cam one).
It's really impressive, textures looks nice, and many if not all objects casts shadows,
even the sandbags and all of them are individually rendered in polygons
(the ones in Resistance aren't IIRC). Many games are lacking in this department.
The only thing that needs work are the animations of the soldiers, and I don't
think there's need to worry. Since none of Kojima Productions game
were dissapointing, esp. the animations (imo).

Stop trying to compare the videos to the screenshots released. And yes some of Gears of War textures look just like those in MGS4.

I think 1st one is the cut-scene model. Second one is the actual gameplay one. Hair is definetly better on the cut-scene model.

In the beginning of the new trailer, when Snake's playing dead, he gets up and his camouflage pattern changes back to normal (his blue/black suit). I just noticed that the dirt on his face changes along with the suit (the dirt goes away). It's a mask.
karasu said:
Why would he be wearing a mask at a graveyard?
We've been mindscrewed.

No I actually saw the sarcasm, but wanted to add something that I felt needed to be said.

Oh, gotcha. And I agree. Are better textures possible? Sure... but it's still a game console, and they're never going to get anything perfect. Now, if the character models, overall environments, gameplay, etc. were less than stellar, I'd be disappointed. But textures? They've just never really been that important to me. Also, early high resolution shots are almost always nastier looking than a final product that you play on a television.

Jumping in on the "theory speculation mobile"

So how far are we? I'll just post my thoughts just on seeing the trailer, chances are i'll come at as an idiot..ah well.

Well, i for one hope/believe that Old Snake is indeed the ressurected Big Boss, why? I still refuse to believe that "Solid Snake" salutes The Boss her grave, and
ps3metalgearsolid4gunsofthepatriots.jpg

Is that a knife he's holding? Looks like Big Boss his CQC style.

Meh dunno:lol

I wouldnt really mind though, but theres something big going on here, and Hideo is fooling each and everyone of us.

I was very pleased with the latest trailer because they finally showed gameplay. I only wish they would show him using that knife on an enemy.

You tell me to stop using videos to compare, and you use a washed-out one with wrong aspect ratio? *rolleyes* Both screens I used are direct feeds, it's perfectly valid. I haven't seen such bad textures in that other game you mention, probably because there aren't.

I think 1st one is the cut-scene model. Second one is the actual gameplay one. Hair is definetly better on the cut-scene model.
Nope, both the cutscene's and the gameplay's models look about the same. It's just like they're not as good as they used to be.

Please not more of this Big Boss being alive talk.
The dude is a corpse, he may be in the story in a similar manner to MGS1 but he won't be alive.
I stand by my original theory, this is a joke by Kojima.
You can see Snake's face change at the begining of the trailer, indicating that the mask must have some kind of shape shifting as well as color shifting ability.
When Snake goes up to the statues, you can see the gray hair sticking out of the back of the mask.
You dont see him take the mask off.
It's probably going to be an easter egg like the Raiden mask in Snake Eater. Meaning you can play as young snake for cosmetic purposes bu maybe also to fool certain enemies so that they don't realize he's an old man.

Well, that's your opinion. Many people feel different and think that the model is the same. *shurgs*
