Official Metal Gear Solid 4 TGS Thread

So grandpa Snake in the blue sneaking suit and grey hair. I wonder why they went with the orange weapon straps though over the straps that match his suit color?

The hair is the same. TGS hair is much greyer than what this scans show. Only thing that changed was the coloring of his suit.

amazing to think this game will only get better with further development time :)

Not just "better"

GM: Will the gameplay look as good as the trailer? It's real-time, right?

Hideo Kojima: Yes, it is real-time, made with nearly final PS3 tools. My staff put a lot of time into, but you still see a little glitching going on. Hopefully, we should be able to fix all of that. We're only now learning how to best use the PS3, so we should be able to greatly enhance the visuals of the final product.

I posted about it in the GC trailer thread awhile back but a bit more on the Octo-Camo. I think some have the idea a little mixed up. An octopus' camoflouge doesn't "match" its surroundings as much as it emulates them. All cephalopods have special skin cells that can change their pigmentation, opacity, specular etc. on the fly. This already makes them pretty unique in the animal kingdom, but what makes them really stick out (literally) is the complex muscle system they use to change the very texture of their skin. So if they're emulating a bumpy sea floor their skin will look suitably bumpy as well.

Thats what makes the MGS4 suit sound so nifty, the suit's texture will produce the actual surface quality (bump mapping) as well as the general pattern to blend in. I'm not sure the tech behind it (procedural perhaps?) but I can't wait to see it in action.

Here's a vid of a cuttlefish messing around with its skin texture, opacity etc...

And the much debated, famous octopus vid (said to have inspired Kojima?)...

All black/blue is boring, the old suit was way too generic.

There's suppose to be an interview with Kojima in the mag also so whenever a translation is done (IGN?) there should be more info before TGS hits.

It would make sense for Snake's weapons harness to be a certain color depending on the environment he is in. For the desert environment, the tanish yellow harness is well suited because the harness is most-likely not part of the Octocamo and will have to be a neutral color to blend in with most of the surroundings. Kojima also pointed out that different outfits/camoflage will be available to Snake throughout the game. Regardless of what color his default suit is, you can be pretty sure there will be options for dress in the game.

I must say once again....DAMN! this game is unbelievable looking.

Why is Octocam > Stealth Camo?

Game mechanics really.
Stealth Camo, easy bitch way out of everything.

Octocam...takes the ideas of different camo patterns clothings of MGS3 but without the need to menu access to switch clothes to accomodate surroundings, but instead adjusts on the fly during gameplay.

I got this info from ruliweb but apparetly Kojima doesn't want the players to feel as though they are shooting with their back against the wall in mgs4. So I am guessing we will be able to strafe and move with while aiming.

Which is a very good thing. Fighting those Gekkou's would be hell if all you could do is stop and pop.

I can see why it's debated. That's just simply un****ingbelievable...

The dude who shot the footage apparently has plenty of aquatic filming street cred... but yeah, its kinda hard to wrap your head around.

I don't think you can move while you're using it though (to balance things out), or at least not very fast. Maybe sneak/crawl mode.

Well I wouldn't imagine Kojima ditching the ability to run and shoot at the same time considering we have been doing it since MGS1, but really enhance it with the newer camera options, like more pinpoint aiming that was solely restricted to first person view mode before.

Well yeah, like the camo patterns in MGS3 it loses it's affect if you move, but this really takes it to a whole new dynamic level.

This is some awesomely impressive stuff to have dynamically changing textures like that on player's character.

2 days... so close. :)

Hopefully we'll see new environments in the TGS trailer...

And of course there's the OOOO system. Oh please kojima let it be part of that demonstration. Apparently it's never been done before and many games will emulate it... or something like that. o_O

That will greatly improve the game mechanics for online play. Metal Gear Solid 3: S was annoying online cause it was tedious to fire the weapon in first person mode and not be able to move.

I hope they learn the lessons from Subsistenence. Other than that online was fun.

First off....HOLY SHIT at that octopus.

Secondly, not only do we hide in ****ing boxes, but, ****ing barrels!

Snake truly is a great man.

Kojima always thinking beyond.

Barrels, not just there to stand around or shoot to explode anymore!!

The animation is going to be waht pushes this over the top. With graphics like that the animation has to be completely on point or it'll hurt the graphics alot.

I couldn't focus in my math class cause I was trying to revisualize the MGS4 gameplay shots.

I'm wondering if Kojima is going to muddy and blurry up the ingame the same way as he did with the cutscenes.

We'll still see framerate drops, but it kind of goes well with the gritty nature. Not trying to defend framerate drops or anything.

I doubt there will be many if any, he seemed pretty upset and disappointed that they were in the E3 trailer.

That'd be good. Still, nothing that would hurt the game for me in any way. MGS3 had some drops here and there.

I just want you guys to know how much I hate you for getting to look at any of the info/media about this game. I'm starving myself on purpose.

I want to know absolutely nothing when that shining day arrives that I finally get to play this game :) Bliss.
