talent? Besides the story what can you really say the franchise has going for it?

Camera? no
Graphics? no
Animations? no
Gameplay? no
AI? no
Stealth Elements? no

etc etc...

And granted, these are all things that plagued the ps2 versions but still... People give too much credit to a team who really has yet to prove anything... (again, besides a story which I've heard is amazing. I can't get by the crappy gameplay to enjoy it though)

Maybe they will finally resolve everything and make a killer total package... but I'm not holding my breath.

Awesome joke post. :lol :lol

Haha, man, seriously, you're so funny! Just go to your room and play on your "next-gen" 360 games.

Hopefully by the time it is released it will be able to stack up to the Tenchu and Splinter Cell footage we've seen. Now those are next gen!

some aspects of the animationn, like the movements of the robots etc look exceptional, alot of the troop movements look jerky and like previous games...obviously place holders etc

peace

So are we at the point where we can realistically discuss the animation without some completely overreacting to it?

The in-game animation in MGS has always been like this as it's not completely mocapped like the cut-scenes. Although this trailer is obvious improvement to me = the new badass moves.

I had hoped that next gen would bring gameplay and cinematic sequences in narrative games closer together. Instead, we get improved animations in the cinematic part only making the disparity even greater. That's worse than the stiff animations by themselfs.

Some look new and improved from MGS3 others look exactly the same as if they are possibly place holders. I personally don't think they look bad but they could definately be improved (and will since they have over a year till the game comes out)

I think the new moves shows that there are placeholder animations still in there. You can see a big difference in terms of the quality between the new animations (again like Snakes animations on the ground which are obviously new) vs the other animations. Those obviously needed to be taken care of first in order to show off the new gameplay concepts instead of having to put together a trailer that just made peopel think it was going to be MGS2/3 in a prettier package.

But I think this is one of the reasons why Kojima feels worried about the release date. There's alot of stuff they've still got to do.

New hardware isn't going to fix this as it really isn't a hardware issue at all.

Well, new hardware shouldn't make the difference greater either. Might as well go back to CG for cutscenes in that case.

I am not sure.

The way Snake animates and the way the Gekkous animate is on a completely different plane than the rest of the bodies in the trailer. I'm guessing those are placeholder.

I don't see how you can watch that Snake vs. Gekkou fight and be unimpressed with the new animations, because for all intents and purposes those are old animations in the rest of the trailer.

The animation is pulling gameplay very close to movies, it just isn't fully done yet and it won't ever get there completely because of the necessity of quick motion changes and the like.

How can that part be non QTE gameplay? Wouldn't the quick cuts be frustrating as hell? (unless I mean a different part of the movie).

huh? It's a cinematic trailer, they take the gameplay and then change the camera angle to make it look more like a movie.

I see. It just didn't occur to me because the cuts looked like they were in-game there.

lol, you fanboys are too easy sometimes... I'm simply stating my opinion, no need to flip out and fall back on insults. The team just seems to get too much credit for what's really just a mediocre game.

I'll be getting a ps3, but i highly doubt this game will ever grace my library :D

Will this years TGS result in more bans then this years E3? Me thinks yes!

On topic:

The game still looks great, a direct feed should make it look even better :) the MKII shocking the guy is just awesome if it's actually part of the gameplay. Some of the animations are a bit jerky but nothing a 8-9months worth of developement time can't fix.

Can't wait for the full version of the trailer and Kojimas little presentation.

I had hoped GAFers would be perceptive enough to be able to decern blatant placeholder animation, and thus not make any overexaggerated and destined-to-be-made-look-idiotic comments, considering the game has over a year in dev left.

I was going to make a GIF of this but you already did the work, so thanks!!

Regarding this....is this also supposed to part of the full gameplay or an stylish introduction? Because the animation of subtle movements as Snake gets up is simply fantastic. I keep looking and looking at it again in the trailer...I'm just not certain.

A) How many times has the "placeholder textures" argument come true?
B) What are the chances of Kojima releasing an MGS trailer that focuses on placeholder stuff that makes his game look bad?

I'm not convinced but keep up the good fight guys!

Maybe they've just been making too many damn trailers this year.

I want to hate this series as much as anybody (arrogant GAF love --"watch me insult you smugly! :lol "-- makes me angry) but I don't see how anyone can complain about this. I think it looks great.

The bad animations are obviously early. Just compare it to the other animations. And if there's anyone who polishes their games it's Kojima. Come on, people.

What animations are the problem? I thoguht the animations for rolling of the cround, elbow walking while lying on back, and that sitting up from back to throw grenade were all amazing. Its hard to see the running animations well, is that the concern?

MGS4 is one of them. Go back and look at the TGS 05 textures and look at the current textures.
Well then, lets hope the animators get to stop making trailers and get to start working on the game soon :P

It'll get done but everyone had been asking for gameplay and this is it. It's not complete obviously as Kojima has even warned of a possible 08 delay, but you get the picture from the video.

I don't think anybody has a problem with Snake's animations, I don't like how the guard fell when he was electrocuted by Otacon's little robot.

The enemy animations look rather poor, but Snake's animations look fantastic.

Nothing is "poorly animated" so to speak. Some things have what looks to be their PS2 animations. Compared against the other things in previous trailers and the newly animated things in these trailers, it can be jarring.

Yeah, what animations are the problem?

Ok thats understanable. I didn't really have my eyes on any enemies in my first viewing, but now that I look, I can see what some people are saying. They don't really look like an improvment over other MGS titles, almost like stock stand-ins as someone said.

acousticvan said:

The soldier animations are off (mainly the FoxHound animations, the other soldiers seem like they might be new). Snake has almost completely new animations all of which look top notch. I think its understandable since Snake is going to be the character to really show off the new gameplay so the focus on animation imrovement for this trailer would be on him, MKII and the Gekkou's since those 2 are completely new.

Well, actually I do have. Because expect from the new moves they are the same like in MGS3. I mean, they were good back then, but I think with the new generation there must be more. For example: Compare the hole movement (running, crouching and so on) with the one of the new Ghost Recon. In GR it looks far more natural und dynamic. In MGS4 it looks like from yesterday. I'm really shocked - I have to say. I've expected so much more after all the "big" annoucment from Kojima in the past. And now it seems like he just changed the camera and added a few new movments in the game. Great.... :-/
