Official Metal Gear Solid 4 TGS Thread

I need to see a better quality video and more footage to judge, but from what 'v seen so far, I'll say that I expected more in terms of animation and realism. The enemy soldiers have the same animations they had in MGS2. And the barrel roll is terrible.

That say, surelly will be n excellent game, but these videos are a great proof of this thing called the Uncanned Valley.

Years of practice. It's clearly not 60fps, and that in and of itself is a disappointment to me as I was expecting Kojima and Co. to bang out another MGS @ 60fps. MGS2 just feels right running at that clip. MGS3, while a great game, felt sluggish to me at 30fps and a little less immersive as a result.

Still, not that big of a deal.

But when you couple that w/ the stiff, PS2 animations (which I hope is just a placeholder for now), it something worth mentioning.

Dear DaCoco can you tell if the new DMC4 game is running at 60fps? Have you watched the new vid? Thank you.

At the moment some of the animation is meh, while some people were saying 'omg best ingame animation ever' etc etc. I read some of the comments here and really was expecting some groundbreaking ingame animation the way people were acting. So far the animation looks like it's in development (which it is), so I'm not praising the ingame animation for now.

Some of the animation is really fantastic (the ground animation for example) other do seem to be placeholder. But I think alot of the reaction is coming from it looking like a huge step up gameplaywise over the previous MGS games just as it is graphically. There never was as much variety in a MGS game before. EektheCat gave some pretty good descriptions of it. I'm also hoping that the first person mode, if in the game, is just like it is in the trailer. Given how many first person games just look like arms, hands and a weapon its nice to see a view where you look in first person you can see your characters body. When he's shooting those soldiers after tossinng the grenade you see his legs sticking out.

Yah guys, this trailer is supposed to show off some of the gameplay bells & whistles. You can bitch about the animation next year. :)

Just give up, if the animation was great, something else would be targeted, like stair textures.

It seems to have sharp visuals and very consistent look, almost like you're playing an anime movie.

It's "the best animation ever" if you see the Gekkos and Otacon's little machine which is imo the most unexpected impressive thing in that trailer along with lighting. If you wanna bash the game, you ignore these and only notice the soldiers which admitedly have kind of dissapointing animation. Of course a normal person would be amazed by the rest of animation and expect Kojima to fix them since he did such an amazing job with the other models.

IMHO, there's someone clearly controlling Snake in that sequence. The Gekkou is merely going through various attacks + Snake is just dodging it with a new set of moves.

-------------

At my first glance of the vid, it looks like they tied Snake's new spin/roll ability into the tilt functionality of the PS3 controller - and it looks brilliantly done.

Being able to go prone, spin/roll face up, go into first person + shoot while on your back is awesome stuff. Add in the ability to toss a grenade over your shoulder while on your back and that's just beyond greatness.

Take a look at the second part of the second vid-

Snake crawls in the middle of a firefight between those Foxhound + rebel looking guys. He then roll around to a face up position, tosses a grenade towards the Foxhound guys. Then he rolls a couple times again to avoid fire, pulls out his handgun + shoots at the other two insurgents.

That's just flat out awesome right there. And that's not even taking account the fact that there's a rebel faction and a foxhound like faction fighting each other on the battlefield.

The spin/roll combined with the Octocam = a nearly unlimited amount of places to hide, despite one of the themes being no place to hide.

I have a feeling the tilt function of the PS3 controller is also tied into the traditional Metal Gear wall lean, as it appears you can now turn + face the wall while leaning against it.

That's just 10 shades of awesomeness!!

God, I need to get home and watch this trailer!

the fact is the game itself looked fantastic, impressive lightning and superb snake animation with some nice camera modification.. but the video bad quality has ruined everything.. just wait for the high quality video and you will be blown.

To those touting Bioshock...it looks good and all. But it moves at a snails pace. It reminds me of Silent Hill in first person (which is a good thing, of course)...but that type of game has no place being compared with MGS4.

Incredible, sucks about 2008. But if it looks the great now I can't even being to imagine what it will look like then.

:lol At the doubters

He can't tell either way as the videos are encoded at 30 fps. We won't know for certain until either seeing them in person or receiving a 60 fps trailer.

I don't know, I looked at it again and it looks good. But human animation is much more difficult and much more noticecable when it doesn't look that good or when it's recycled. I have/had the same feeling with Splinter Cell DA.
I don't wanna 'bash' the game. I loved MGS2 and this is in development and I'm looking forward to it. Everything else feels so right and consistent about this game. It just felt weird to me when some of the first reactions were about praising the animation when that part of the gameplay trailer is the least impressive. To me, the animation just not there yet with the rest of MGS4 so I how can I praise it? I'll probably will when it's closer to release.

What is the best thing ever is how much of a nongamy graphics feel this has. It's like you're not looking at polygons or textures. Nothing feels 'showy' or 'overused'.

I wish I hadn't seen this trailer in such bad conditions: bad quality, low res, no sound and weird angle.

At the risk of getting into the animation discussion, I don't anticipate the Foxhound guards running to change all too much at all, since it looks to be fairly intentional (and it's the same thing the devs were taught by Mori in of the old MGS documentary vids I think).

Foxhound's unit will most likely run in that tight, regimented style. With the possibility of the two middle soldiers occasionally scanning the flanks while the last solider occasionally covering the rear. The main reason why it may not change all that much is that's pretty much how the devs were taught they should run (as a tight line formation, with all sides covered.) since back in the MGS2/3 days. Notice when they're engaged they spread out + take cover in a very cohesive manner as well. You're not going to be able to sneak up to that line of soldiers very easily when they have eyes covering all sides like that.

Just a longshot guess here but, we'll most likely see the Rebel faction be given an entirely new set of behavior animations to separate them from Foxhound - Think something like Foxhound runs in a tight line while the Rebels run as a loosely knit pack. They will probably do something like have the Rebels occasionally leave one flank exposed.

Granted that's assuming there's no written guide as to how Rebel insurgent/guerillas should run/fight. Foxhound on the other hand definately follows the trained Special Forces stuff the MGS devs have learned.

Only watched the first clip, the quality and sound is pretty poor, and I read it isn't the full trailer. I'll just wait for official video tonight before deciding what I think of it.

From what I did see in the first clip it does looks like the soldiers animation is atleast in part taken from MGS3 if the death/knockdown animations are anything to go by. One of them gets shot in the head by Snake and he spins to the ground exactly like they do in MGS3 when headshot, and the falling animation after one of them is stunned by MK2 is old too. Hopefully it's just placeholder animation for the soldiers.

Damn this game is hot as hell. To the real MGS players, did you see all of those new animations?

Yes, it seems that the breadth of things you can interact with is, by all means, much greater than anything we were used to before.

I think human animation is easier since they can capture human motion with real actors. They just haven't worked at it imo. And don't tell me Utacon's little robot and the Gekko don't have amazing animation. Try to find model animation aquivalent to Otacon's robot. I personally can't.

And wasn't talking about you bashing the game btw and sorry that it seemed like it. I'm talking about the usual people who bash PS3 games in general.

Holy mother of god that was aweosme! The gekko animations were insane. And the game looked like a hell of a lot of fun to play!

And :lol@ the trolls trying their DAMNDEST to downplay this game. Keep up the good work guys. :lol

It is fairly obvious that some of the animations are still placeholders. However, the animation of the gekko's were awesome.

And MKII....pixar quality right there.

Your avatar scared the hell out of me when it moved.

A couple of poor animation patches aside this is the best gameplay graphics so far.
Can't wait to see direct feed HD.

yeah, kojima said it has over a year of dev time left or some shit

****, I was going to buy a ps3 next fall for this game. Are you sure he didn't mean since the footage he was showing? maybe they wrapped the demo footage a month ago and end of august + 15 months = november 07?

It seems crazy to miss that fall. That fall is ground zero next gen battle zone. All the heavies should have made an appearance on Wii and 360 by then. I mean, nobody expects FFXIII next year, do they?

Are you forgetting about the end of the previous trailer that said 2008 and it made the ! sound

Then the 8 got crossed off and replaced with a 7

November 2007 is extremely likely

So many new cool moves. Snake just got better at killing...

Yeah, the new gameplay additions look so sweet.

Gah, this talk of a possible 2008 release is killing me!!

P.S. The barrel roll is the most hilariously awesome thing ever! And here I thought it was just another choice over the box to hide in.

Yah, but things change. If they hit a roadblock or aren't happy with the way something is developing they could delay it if they want.

Yah, Kojima owns us like that.

Looks absolutely fantastic. Only thing that bothered me was the running animation from the two soldiers coming around the corner, but I'm sure they'll fix that soon enough.

Does anyone have any free GIF programs they can lead me to? I really want to try my hand at making some animated GIF of the trailer, their are some really awesome showcase moves and animations in the trailer.

SolidSnakex where are you when I need you?!

Is there any way I can save the streams or can someone rehost 'em? Not working on my work PC for some reason.

The small footage at Gameklip though... ****ing incredible. I think it's pretty damn funny that some can't admit that, regardless of system preference. The game just looks insane.

SSX passed out after watching the trailer. I expect him to wake up around the time the HD video is out, see it, and pass out again.

Wait. Doesn't that actually confirm the fall 2007 date?

I think Kojima expressed concerns that it might release later in 2007 than he thought, maybe it's a winter, meaning December 2007, release. And of course it doesn't take much to push over that December 2007 release and head straight into 2008.

Aha. So nothing is confirmed, but things don't look good.

I'm very dissapointed of the animations too. Snake (except of some new moves) and the enemys have exacly the same animations like in MGS3. I've expected more from kojima. Very poor....

MGS Threads:

Good:
I get to look at cool pictures and learn new things about a great series.

Bad:
Never fails to bring out the worst of GAF

Yeah I know but from his last post it seems he can tell just by watching a vid :p

From what I have seen of the MGS4 gameplay I am impressed with the visuals but not in awe. It does have a lot more development time left and so does Lost Odyssey so I am looking forward to see how both turn out (I am a 360 owner). It is one of the titles I plan on purchasing when I do finaly get a PS3 (hopefully price drop in a year or year and a half). I would like to see more of it from a gameplay perspective so hopefully Kojima will give us a nice run through. I also can't wait for direct feed HD vids so I can see the detail and really get good impressions. Really I think Bioshock spoiled me a little bit but regardless I am excited for MGS4 and DMC4. As of right now my stance on the PS3 is that I am not some of the people who bash it but I am just going to wait for a varied list of titles. With this DMC4, hopefully RE5, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Lost Planet, and many other titles I am going to be a PS60 man.

I hate when huge stuff like this hits while I'm at work. I finally got a chance to watch the vids and I'm actually more impressed than I thought I would be. I was sure that the trailers were just over exaggerating how great the game was going to look in terms of game play, but I'm very happy to have been proven wrong. A lot of the new touches are going to be huge gameplay mechanics are going to be huge assets (like rolling for example).

Looks INCREDIBLE, but the animation is definitely stiff - they have over a year to work on it, so I'm not worried. Damn Kojima, you 'da man.'
