The Red Sox are a mess this year. Seriously, I was excited about the prospect of Theo possibly coming to the Nats at the start of the year, but this year has been terrible for him, and now I'm glad he isn't (although I don't see how we could be any worse-off right now ....). Giving up good young prospects to reacquire Mirabelli, giving up too much for Crisp then overpaying him, handing a huge extension to Beckett who seems to be falling apart trying to face AL East hitters on a regular basis, the list goes on. And someone on ESPN, I think it was Neyer, made a good point - the Yankees certainly spend a great deal of money, but at least they're using it to get better. The Red Sox budget has pretty much stayed flat since the world series, despite all their ever-increasing huge sources of income (NESN, influx of money from MLB.com, etc). Why is that? It should certainly raise some questions in Red Sox nation.

I think the AL East is grossly overrated this year. And this shit has got to stop. Its embarassing even as a Yank fan myself.
Im willing to bet that the Yanks or Red Sox (if they make it to the playoffs) are not even going to get out of the ALDS. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I wouldn't underestimate what the Twins, Tigers, Chisox, Angels and the As can do.
It's all very up in the air, and quite frankly I don't think the WS team this year will be an AL East team.
Of course it isn't over, but at 6.5 games back, here's how it would need to go to force a tiebreaker:
Yankees, 39 games remaining
Red Sox, 38 games remaining
Assuming Yankees play ~.500 and go 20-19, Red Sox would need to play .684 and go 26-12. The Tigers, with the best record in baseball, are playing .637.
Assuming Yankees play close to where they are now but not above, .610, they can go 23-16 for a .590 percentage. If so, the Red Sox would need to play 29-9, or .763.
The lead is not insurmountable and by simply typing this up I am practically writing a gaurantee for a dead heat going into the last weekend, but the Red Sox are going to need some help from the Yankees if they are going to get back into this.
