A lot of confusion has existed because there is a $4 million bonus payment due to Heatley on July 1. It was the understanding of many involved, including the Senators and Oilers, that once the clock struck midnight and turned over to July 1, the Sens would be on the hook for the $4 million bonus payment, which may have been a serious impediment to getting a deal done after midnight.

But as it turns out, the NHL says as long as a Heatley trade is concluded before midnight eastern tomorrow night, the bonus payment allocation can be transferred to the new team.

So, in effect, the Senators have another 24 hours to find a suitable deal that Heatley will approve and NOT be on the hook for his $4 million signing bonus.

Well, atleast Ottawa has all day to trade Heatley without having to pay his bonus. That is until he says no again.

I still don't get the "traitor" stuff that comes from a lot of Pens fans. Yeah, it sucked that he waited so long, but in the long run, it worked out for the best. WE WON THE CUP!

Agreed. I hope that Burke doesn't bring him in. And I really hope he doesn't go and sign the Sedin's to huge longterm contracts either. The last thing we need is to sign guys just because we can and screw up our cap for years to come.

There are rumours going around that the Sens were never really serious about the Oilers offer and Murray was just using them to get the Rags to up their offer from before which Darren Millard, when he was on the Team 1260 a few moments ago, said was Dubinsky, Callahan and Del Zotto. I'm hoping that's the case, and I would take that Rags offer over the Oilers offer 10 times out of 10.

Dubinsky is so much better then any player in the Oilers offer it's disgusting.

Only thing the Sens would have to worry about is paying him (he's an RFA).

Agree, besides Cogs that return is horseshit, would love it if it's changed to Gagner and Cogs.

On Team1260 Edmonton, Darren Millard reports that New York offered Dubinsky, Callahan, and Del Zotto and they're considering upping their offer after hearing about this deal.

I still think there's a possibility that the deal goes thru tmrw.
I *think* I like the deal for the Oilers.
But if it stays nixed, then meh - Cogliano and Smid are solid players that are good value.

With that said, Heatley is a fucking punk.
I can't imagine how the Oilers players involved feel.

Not wanting to practice (we ain't even talkin' about a game), going half-assed, not being afraid to badmouth people, and so on.

Emery thought he deserved more play time. Heatley simply doesn't want to play.

Edmonton and New York are still very much interested in Heatley, and Murray has until midnight to trade him (until his $4M bonus is due). But the wild card is that free agency begins at noon. Will that quash NYR's/Edmonton's interest in Heatley? Or will the Heatly situation screw up NYR's/Edmonton's free agent strategies?

Following all this hockey stuff in real time on Twitter is frigging amazing btw.

Poor Edmonton...they need to be allowed to have double the cap room of the rest of the league to try and mitigate the fact that nobody wants to play there.

I just hate him from the MON/TOR games. Also I think we could get a similar player for much cheaper. I figure he'll go for over 4m, closer to 4.5m.

Melnyk is pressuring Murray to make the trade so he doesn't have to pay his $4m advance of salary. The return for Heatley will reflect Ottawa's desperation to trade him... It's unfortunate because after July 1st Heatley's value will sky rocket.

I hope he refuses to waive his NMC. Bad for Melnyk's wallet good for us fans. :lol

Yeah, I was ticked off initially. But once the playoffs came around, my anger waned. And now, it's just kind of funny. Don't care where he goes and what he does now, unless it's a rival like Philly or Washington, then I'll hate him all over again. :D

Umm no, if he doesn't play, no olympics for him and that's more important for him.

The whole issue is that he isn't getting enough minutes and no powerplay time under the new coach.

Or maybe he decided to sleep on it and give it second thoughts, thinking it cvould be worse.

Murray probably knew Heatley would turn it down. Heatley's fucked over the sens, and by doing this Murray has got him back a little by tarnishing Heatley's already bad reputation and now Heatley by all accounts is seen as a piece of shit.

So yea, good move by Murray

hawks would have enough cap problems even without a hossa contract.
