Official Oddworld: Stranger thread

I was burned bad by the last one, so I will hold out for a month or to, to see what the lasting impressions are.

Couple new screens to get us to tomorrow.

Since this game sounds like a one and done experience I may have to take advantage of the blockbuster no more late fees keep it some extra days without penalty but not too long so I don't buy it plan and just finish it.

I think he means that it has no replay value, and I can confirm that it doesn't. It's about 10 hours and at least I have absolutely no desire to play it again. So I'd recommend it as a rental to anyone on a tighter budget.

nah, not that, i meant 'splain about blockbuster not having late fees silly

10 hours is sweet for an Oddworld game. These guys deserve my money for always doing something different. I'll be getting this today as well.

Yeah, don't get me wrong or anything. I'm not trying to talk anyone out of buying it. I love Oddworld Inhabitants and Lorne... But I think people with less money should be given a fair warning. We've all been there.

Yeah but I doubt we would see people making the same comments about Rachet and Clank UYA. I've read that that game is near a 10 hour game too (single player).

But 10 hours for something like this is cool. 10 hours for any game that keeps me interested all the way through is awesome.

well so far, i gotta say everything seems top notch.

graphics = hot and very smooth....gotta love it.

Controls = very smooth and well done...and a BIG + is they give you all the inverting options needed....need to invert FPS Y? check
Invert Cam Y ? (if you want to, i dont) Check
Invert Cam X? CHECK

great stuff.

Sound = also excellent so far....dont know who was complaining about voice acting...voice acting is perfect...if you played all the oddworld games, you know they have strange/comical voices for thier characters.

me being a fan of the first 2 oddworld games, im enjoying this game quite a bit so far.

OH. forgot to mention gameplay...

Gameplay Ownz so far.....i was worried it was just gonna be your typical FPS type stuff...but it really isnt...its very unique and quite enjoyable.

Another review at WorthPlaying

9.2 score and this little snippet

"Graphically this has got to be one of the best looking games I have seen since the release of Ninja Gaiden several months ago. Stages are vast and very open with a view distance up to a half mile, not your average game where you are limited on where you can go and are confined to small spaces. Backgrounds are detailed and are not blurred or covered with a fog. There are a high number of polygons used to model objects and everything is textured nicely. Lighting, reflections, and explosions throughout the game are very well done also."

Picking it up after work.

I agree completely with the graphics part of this review. Oddworld is an amazing looking game, and I'm quite the graphics whore. Utterly polished too, so far I did not detect any noticeable slowdowns, quite an accomplishment considering the number of stuff being displayed on the screen at a time.
I usually don't argue about other people's opinion, but I honestly cannot understand how Folder could say that Oddworld was a truly ugly game with low poly models and bad texturing, and that Timesplitters 3 looked much better. It's like he played an entirely different game than anyone else.

From a CNN article:

"The world's largest video rental company will still have due dates for their rental products -- one week for games and two days or one week for movies, depending on whether it's a new release.

But customers will be given a one-week grace period after that to return the product. After that grace period ends, the chain will automatically sell them the product, less the rental fee. If the customers don't want to purchase the movie or game, they can return the product within 30 days for a credit, less a restocking fee. "

OK.....ive only played about a hour into this game but I OFFICIALLY ENDORSE IT and Give it my Temporary Seal of Approval.

this game ownz. its funny, gameplay is interesting and I really dont see any faults in the game at the moment (tho im hearing its not real long, which is ok if the whole experience is good)

things id like to add about the gameplay.

you can switch from third person to fps whenever you want, and there are benefits for being in both....also, there are many different types of ammo and they all have a special use...not all of them do the same thing like typical shooters, in which, they all dont hurt your enemy...rather they help you capture your enemy.

Also you can melee whenever you want in third or first....in third its ahead butt and spin punch and in fps its a punch.

The health is handled similar to halo in that, you can recharge but not done the same way. When you get hurt.....you can "shake it off"(which will heal you) which takes up stamina...and your stamina will recharge by itself"

the game is pretty funny and when interacting with NPCs they say ALOT of things. Ive talked to one NPC 6 times and each time he said something different.

ok, time to play more.

Do NOT sleep on this game because of Munch!

OH and the Graphics are Amazingly good...I have to put this up next to games like DOA ultimate/Ninja Gaiden/RE4/PDO as a game with one of the best graphics this Gen.

peace

I've put about 2 hours in, and so far so good. Graphics are sweet running in 480P, the control seems a little loose at times in 3rd person but very nice in 1st. The voicework is pretty decent but Stranger sounds like a douchebag, I'm not feeling his voice at all.

the xbn review and the graphics (sweet lord the graphics) have sold me on this. fry's will have it for $40 tomorrow afternoon. i really want it, but my backlog is massive, and i can't tear myself from mingol portable even to play re4. :/ might have to wait a few weeks.

I've played this for about an hour and half and really like it so far. I pretty much share the same feeling as the above posters. Quality title without a doubt so far.

Man, I really wanna play this game. I just need to get through RE4 first. I know if I stop, I'll probably never finish it.

Why has this thread not been stickied? Anti-XBox bias? ;)

I hate FPS games... but I love Oddworld... I really enjoyed Munch too... I loved the PS1 games of Oddworld with Abe.

I might have to rent it because I don't feel like spending $50 on a game I might not like... DAMN...

Ok, I need help with the last bounty in the first town. I have died like 50 times. He has so many guards, I cant get the boss alone long enough to capture him.

I played the game for about an hour and a half last night and I have to say that I'm surprised that I really like the game as much as I do. The graphics are gorgeous and the world looks lush and detailed. The game startd off good then some very interesting things started happening that peaked my interest. Overall a worthy purchase and a great game that showcases the XBox platform. I was not a big fan of the previous Oddworld games. I just didn't see what the hype was about, but this game has kept my attention and is fun to play. I'm more into action adventure game and this game more my cup of tea that the puzzle solving, Out of This World/FLashback gameplay of the other games (Abe/Munch). I thought the whole 'Live ammo' concept was going to be some cute gimmick that wouldn't implement well, but I'm actually surprised on how refreshing it is. So far I think the game deserves the high scores and accolades it's been receiving, I'm actually shocked that there hasn't been more hype about the game, it's really cool!

I'll post more impressions when I get some more stuff of my backlog (i.e. KotoR2, Mercenaries, RE4, and other stuff I got over the holidays).

I am extremely impressed as well. I just finished the first town (Justin keep in mind where the boss is and stay away from him while bagging loner grunts, be sure to suck them up for bounty so they dont wake up and continue to give you grief) and I am having a really good time with it. The engine really is incredible, what I wouldn't give for MGS 3 with THIS engine, that would be game of the decade.

The only problems I have are the environments seem static because NONE of the plant life moves, as beautiful as it is if it were to incorporate just the slightest bit of movement in the grass and trees it would have made a huge difference. My only other concern I hesitate to call it a complaint is it seems they could have taken some of the elements a little bit further, it mixes MGS gameplay (hiding in the grass, scanning area with binoculars etc), Halo gameplay (great battles, beautiful large environments, perfect controls) but still feels the slightest bit shallow, I would have liked to have seen the stealth thing taken a bit further as well as perhaps a little bit less linearity.

That being said, I give the first few hours a 9.5 out of 10, the engine, controls, graphics, characters and environment are outstanding. Extremely polished and deliberate in everything it does, I wish Halo 2 had been this clean, sharp and ready for action.

Quick impressions after 5 hours of play last night:

I should say first I have about zero interest in western movies, and only rented Munch. The best way I can describe this game is a mix of Halo (excellent smooth controls and shooting) + Metroid (first person platforming feels just as smooth and I rarely go 3rd person anymore) + Fable (lush enviroments with detail textures up close, reflection mapping, some bumpmapping except this engine runs like butter smooth and looks even better).

The live ammo really had me on the fence becuase honestly in the screenshots it just looked goofy imo. However like the above poster mentioned it is excellent and a ton of fun. The ammo (like the squirrel for example) talks to you while on the crossbow and it's some funny shit. I seriously havn't laughed out loud during a game so much since I played Disgaea. Great stuff there.

Another thing about the graphics, as beutiful as they are, is when you come to a point where you're running along and stumble upon a cliff with a HUGE draw distance and 'town' below with a ton of detail. Yet the framerate never stutters. Just made my jaw drop.

Capturing enemies using combinations of the eniviroment, ammo, and your own strategy adds alot to the fun. It's cool figuring out the ways different ammo affects different enemies depending on the situation and current surroundings. Throw in platforming fun, rope climbing ( horizontal and vertical ), and stores to buy upgrades and such and I see why it got great review scores.

Last thing I'll mention is the sound. You definatly get the feeling that they were going for a bad-ass Clint Eastwood character with Stranger's voice and they suceeded. He's gritty and cool looking, yet polite when need be. Some people have commented on the apparent low sample quality of the npc voices. Well, after playing I realized they are emulating the old scratchy, AM radio type sound you get when you watch an old western movies. Alot of thought went into details like that. Can't believe a reviewer didn't pick up on that.

All in all, with 5 hours playtime, I think it's an excellent game with a new feel. Sometimes jumping the fence pays off. Now it's happily part of my select xbox collection.

I've only put about an hour (maybe a little less) and really impressed.

The live ammo is pretty cool. So far I like using the chippunk to either draw an enemy to the bushes I'm hiding in or to draw him to a trap of wuzzles. The chippunk is definelty the coolest though. Some of the crap that he talks when you are just walking around is awesome. :D

The draw distance is killer. The game-speak is totally cool. I've always been a fan of how they use that feature. And I really like how some of the characters will make different comments once you've completed something, having them comment that they need to fix the bridge after I caught one of the bosses was pretty cool.

I can't wait to spend some more time with this this weekend. Awesome game!!

My copy arrived today from Outpost. I don't think I'm as taken with it as the other posters in this thread (strategic FPS games aren't quite my bag), but it seems pretty well produced (it's got that Xbox look though) and the controls are simple enough and the pace slow enough (at 90 mins or so...) that you don't need to really be a fan of the genre.

I bet the story will progress to the point where I have to stop the jerkwad duckmen (who obviously have an ulterior motive). I can't wait until then... the most fun part of the game so far in running around and bumping into them so you can steal their money. :lol

I started playing Stranger last night, and I was very, very pleasantly surprised. First of all, it looks gorgeous. The color palette is reminiscent of WoW, though not as pastel-heavy. All the text and logos in the game are super sharp thanks to great use of 480p. Lighting looks great too, and the levels show many signs of life.

I also dig how it has a Beyond Good & Evil vibe going for it, and borrows from MGS3 (you have to constantly hunt, you can stamina kill anyone, you can hide in tall grass, etc).

The downsides so far are the voice-acting. It's good, but the majority of the characters are voiced by Lanning, and it's obvious. I'm also stuck pretty early on (how do I get into the water facility?). Otherwise, though, it seems to be a good game.

Teh thumbs up.

As I play more and more, I'm liking the interesting and creative combinations you can come up with with your 'live ammo'. You reallya good degree of freedom and creativity. This game may not be everyone's cuo of tea, but the production value is high and you can tell the Oddworld Inhabitants team put some time into this title. I reallyl love the seamless transition between first and third person, you can tell these guys worked on getting this engine to hum without a hitch. The title is impressive, but I have to play more before I give it a final verdict. I like the dialogue of the NPCs and some of the 'live' ammo. Hilarious stuff, and a good game. I can tell there's more going on than meets the eye, and I keep hearing the story gets even more interesting. I plan to put down RE4 and Mercenaries and dedicate a few hours to this game this weekend. ;)

Some more impressions:

1. I don't like the voice acting much as it can be hard to understand sometimes. They don't have a subtitle option which sucks.

2. The boss fights rock! I just did the 7th bounty
the guy with the rockets
and man, that was both challenging and fun. I couldn't capture the bastard alive... >:

3. The graphic engine reminds me a lot of Ninja Gaiden's engine in that it's very clean and polished, looks great and the transitions to different areas are just seamless. There are some nature areas that are quite beautiful looking. Big props to both the technical and artistic talent in Oddworld Inhabitants.

I had it in my hands at lunch and put it back... I just have never enjoyed FPS or played one longer than 10 minutes without getting a headache...

I will have to rent it before buying...

Bash the door down or blow it up.

More impressions:

Forgot to mention there is no loading at all. When you die, which I have about 15 times already, it takes 2 seconds to reload your save. Nice seamless world.

I'm about 7.5 hours in and just finished the 1st bounty in the second town and having a blast. Don't even waste the rental fee if any of the above interests you. Just buy it... it's a great game.

Now, about that commission check :p

I'm quite a few hours into Oddworld and about an hour and half after the twist in the game. Love the game so far. The gameplay mechanics are just very dynamic and feel very unconstrained. But, the most important thing about the game is that it feels both fresh and so full of personality, which is something that most games lack nowadays.

The graphics also continue to wow me. There are some gorgeous environments.

So far, it's shaping up to be a fantastic game. It's great that we get 2 incredible games in one month so early in the year (RE4 and Oddworld.)

Shame it's not getting more love. I was really impressed with the graphics in this game and it oozes atmosphere. Easily the best game Lorne and the gang have ever made. I'm sure EA is happy with it. Maybe it's not going to sell a million, but the game oozes AAA in terms of quality.

Give this game a shot. You'll be surprised.

Its not really the voice although he does sound really bad as an actor...the quality just sounds really poor and its hard to pick up most of the time.

If you liked Armed and Dangerous...if you WANTED to like Armed and Dangerous, go run to buy this right now. It's incredible.

Just made it into the
snowing war torn city
and the game continues to amaze me

The world seems more alive in this game than expected...the graphics are silky smooth with expansive and highly detailed areas and the gameplay is a refreshing mix of many genres. The game's stealth aspect is well done and the controls IMO could not have been better. This game oozes polish and life. The live-ammo aspect of this game creates a completely unique gameplay experience for every single challenge the game throws at you. Every weapon type is can be used and some extremely fun combos can be found just by picking two random weapons and finding out how one draws on the other's strengths.

The controls in either view are perfect IMO and the camera controls and customization are more exhaustive than needed :D My only complaint regarding the camera is that in the 3rd person view it can get stuck...though this only happened to me once throughout my current game (and even then, a quick switch to the 1st person view fixes that). My only complaint about the 1st person view is that it is hard to tell if your character gets knocked down as the screen doesn't lower to let you know.

The ammo, themselves, are hilarious and often lead to many fun distractions inside of towns or with single foes. Of all of them, I've come to especially love the Critters-like fuzzballs (think proximity mines that chew enemies to death instead of explode) and the devastation that can be caused by them. Hell...even punching enemies (Click L-Analog stick while in 1st person view) through windows and off bridges is more fun than it should be. All of the weapons are useful and any conceivable combination has it's use. This aspect of the game actually reminded me of Splinter Cell's gadgets than any previous shooter.

The game's visuals are great and I will have to agree with the previous posters and say that this is one of the best looking games available on a console. The enemy animation, the details put into all of the textures, the exception use of effects (this game is one of the few games I can think of that doesn't shove badly used effects down your throat,).
Running through a detailed tunnel and then finding yourself inside huge underground cavern filled with luminous insects and flora coupled with a gorgeous pool of water reflecting the entire scene
without a single drop in the games framerate had to have been of the best graphical 'wow' moments in recent memory. The game's distinct western feel is a welcome change of pace from the usual videogame design (
though the game does seem to shift into a WWII vibe where I'm at
)

The funny thing is, I almost didn't pick this game up after being bored with Munch

I just made it to the same place and had to pick up my jaw from the floor.

R0X R0X R0X!

Trying to Capture bad guys alive makes this game so much more difficult and so much more deep.

at first i was just killing everything, but now, im tryna capture as many things alive as i can, and it can be quite difficult trying to pick people off and the suck em in while a shitload of other guys are trying to shoot at you....thats when you gotta get "tactical" and thats where the depth really comes in.

with that said, what is everyones most used ammo?

right now....im playing this game kinda like i would a RE game, where im tryna conserve ammo (which is stupid of me cause theres ammo all over the place), so i mostly use just the infinite shock ammo. my combo is usually Spider/Infinite shock thing or Fuzzle/infinite shock.....

and if there is a group together....il get the skunk/infininte shock thingy.

peace

Just wait until you get further ahead in the game. I used to be all conservative with the ammo but it's so much fun using a 'sucking up skunk' to suck up 4-5 guys into a spot, then blow them up to pieces with the dynamite fuzzle.

This game r0x a lot. I had good expectations of the oddworld game, but this has absolutely blown them up.

Damnit... headache after 10 minutes... FPS fuck me up and I get nauseous... DAMN... I will try again tomorrow when the wife and baby go to sleep.
