Official Oddworld: Stranger thread

FPS's used to get to me, too. Then I played and beat Forsaken, and suddenly nothing else could dizzy me. I swear that game must've forced something in my brain to get with the program.

Which one is that?

Let me know if you need hints.

i figured it out

he is the guy who shoots homing missles at u and he has a force field, and everytime u take out the force field...he just gets harder...and harder....and like almost impoosible......

but what i did was use the super exploding bat (wombat?) after taking out the first generater, and just kept shooting him with it then captured him alive

peace

Ah... you're still there...

After the twist, the game becomes a lot more fun. R0X!

Great shooting action. Sucking Ammo + Dynamite Ammo = BOOM BOOM BOOM! :D

I thought I'd gotten a handle on the game, but now all I keep reading about is "the twist." I just bagged Measley, the one who takes over the farm -- am I close to "the twist"?

No.

And who said the game feels very short ?? I'm a couple hours past the 'twist', i can't tell how many hours it's been since the beginning, but it sure felt very 'long' in that so many things happened, i walked through so many different and huge areas..

Later on the game becomes much more fun, mostly because all weapons get actually useful and you'll start using them all (i got to the 'twist' using mostly zapflies, bees and good old fists).
What slightly bothered me is, it shows there's a few things which were originally meant to be different in the mind of the designers.
Those who didn't get to the 'twist' yet might not want to read the spoiler:
The way you get powered up ammo, with the natives rushing to give (?) them to you, for example and the new armours after the twist: you receive them all in such a short time and for free, it's pretty pointless having designed 3 of them.
Originally, you were probably meant to buy them yourself from the General Stores - There's an "armour" option but all you can buy is some kind of leather glove at the beginning, nothing else

The engine and the beauty of the scenery is simply amazing; i think everyone should see this game to the end.

I finished the game just an hour ago or so and was so floored by it. I'll write up something better later, but I simply loved it.

That said, the game felt somewhat short. I didn't count the hours, but I'd guess it took me 12-15 hours to beat the game. It might've taken me more, but frankly, since the game was so fun it felt the time just flew by.

Huge props to Lorne Lanning. The game's a gem.

I've played a couple more hours, and i feel i'm close to beating the game, now. It wasn't short to me (but then again, i've got so little spare time, 15 hours is 'long' to me) but i think what makes the game feel short is the change of pace in the second half, and the fact the 'twist' is not actually halfway, since the second part plays much faster.
I still think the 'western', adventure part could have been fleshed out more and made more 'interesting' and less repetitive/schematic:
There are a couple possibilities the game should have explored further, and that's probably what brought the title's value down for a few mags (referring to those scores in the 8's range) but overall, yes, this game's a gem.
I don't know if it's worth Edge's 9 yet, but they probably didn't want this game to be overlooked and wanted to make it clear Stranger's doesn't blend in the 8's crowd.
Very good game, fun, very impressive from a technical point of view (when played from a first person perspective, Stranger's Wrath crushes most fps on xbox -yep, even the most hyped one -), visually excellent, with a magnificient artstyle.
Also, a fresh experience, somehow.
I hope EA does some good marketing, i would feel sad for these talented developers if the world they have crafted with such care was to be overlooked. What a waste it would be.

Having finished the game here are a few more thoughts on it:

1. The graphics engine reminds me a lot of Ninja Gaiden. It has great textures, very detailed character models, and huge detailed environments. It's definitely one of the best looking games out at the moment.

2. The art is fantastic in the game. There were many instances where I just stopped and had to look for a long while at the surroundings and how gorgeous they looked. It also has a wide variety of environments so they never feel similar.

3. This is, perhaps, the best implementation of a 3rd person/1st person hybrid. It is very well done and the transitions from/to each camera type are seamless and work excellently. Not only it works for dealing with combat, but it adds a layer of depth to it since you have melee moves while on 3rd person perspective.

4. The sound gets the work done and some of the voicework is hilarious. I wish, however, that they had the subtitle option in it as sometimes understanding what the characters said was hard. From the music side of things, it also gets the job done and past midpoint through the game, it gets much better and feels more epic.

5. Charm. This game has tons of charm. The characters feel so full of life and this adds so much to the game. Granted, the game lacked more specific personalities, but the combination of voice work/art/animation did a great job at bringing the characters to life. Unlike most games nowadays, with generic characters devoid of any personality or life, this one has it in spades.

6. The only issue I had with the game was that it felt somewhat short. I think I played 12-15 hours before completing the game. Truth is that the game is so very well paced and so seamless (loading times are hidden, Metroid Prime style,) that this might have a lot to do with it feeling 'short'. I would've loved if the game had been longer. Nevertheless, the game has a good length for a shooter, and shouldn't be dismissed for that.

7. Finally the game is just very fun and open in terms of ways to deal with foes. One can make many combinations with the live ammo to take down opponents, including going stealthy or blowing everything on your path.

Simply put, the game is excellent in every regard: Graphics (from both a technical and aesthetic point of view,) Sound and Gameplay and it also has a lot of personality, which is something very few games have nowadays. A must buy, imho.

well, i finally got to a certain part and i gotta say...this game ownz. and now it actually FEELS like a true oddworld game

(once you get to the twist) being that all oddworld games are about a weak or or endangered character.....steef fits right in now.

peace

Did anyone get the bonus DVD that was available with some pre-orders? If so what did it contain?

It contains all of the Oddworld series pre-rendered cinematics as well as 2 area playthroughs by Lorne Lanning.

Worth buying on ebay??? Doesn't seem like it but I would like to see it.

I think it would be for the hardcore oddworld fan.

but If you're not a hardcore oddworld fan, then I dont see why youd care...but if you are...go ahead and cop it.....dont spend a ridiculous price on it tho.

I love the oddworld universe, so I wish I had a copy.

Wow...this game is really fun. It had to grow on me a little after a couple hours, but it's top notch. Really interesting to look at most the time and often quite funny. I love the villagers reactions to beatings. The ammo really is a fun novelty. If I'm going to get sequels most the time, be sure to make them as great as they have been lately!

Not really. Lorne's playthroughs are, I think, available through IGN/Gamespot.

The previous games' pre-rendered cinematics are very nice, but personally, I wouldn't pay for it. It really depends on how badly you want it.

I was waiting for you to get this... now that you said it was good, I'll go pick it up. Your Xbox collection has to be pretty damn big now.

ha, i'm not a collector so they don't all stay there, you know what I mean? It's not that large, it's...select. Definitely made a good impression. Hope we don't end up feeling cheated by length, but if it can do what it does right for 10-15 hours I won't be dissapointed.

Anymore, those 10 hour games are perfect for me. I have a hard time finishing any game over 20 hours. I just don't have the time for it... and it's sad to say, but I lose interest because it takes so long for me to finish a game.

Kotor... shelved, not finished.
Kotor II... shelved, not finished.
Fable... shelved and finished.

Guess which one I liked best... Fable.

Boy do I hear you. KOTOR grabbed me for a hectic 40+ hours which is one reason I love it, but II...I'm just not interested in making that type of time commitment this time round. For some reason Fable didn't age well post-game for me, but hey, I finished it right away!

I think this could be a factor in Oddworld's Favor too. It's atmosphere is very unique, I think you'll enjoy it. One of my only gripes is that I love to use first person in this game, it works excellently, and certain actions throw you back into a 3rd person view at the wrong time.

I finished the first town last night. The game continues to impress. I really like the talking that the townsfolk are doing amongst themselves. I've heard them make several comments about me seeing the Doc. It's those small touches that make the world seem alive.
It took me quite a bit to figure out what I needed to do to take down the water facility boss alive. I kept resetting my xbox when he would die cause I really want to get through the game catching everyone alive that I can. I like that you have to use a bit of strategy to play this way.

But that's all for now. I'm about to take out "Yo Mamma" :lol Best boss name ever? I think so

Dang I shot him with the Boombat and then went at him with a charged up Fly and the Thud Slugs and unfortunatly killed him. So you shot him with just the Boombat??

Make sure to press X for Stranger's comment while you're on the mission...

Also, re Packrat:
It took me lots of tries, but this is how I ended up getting him alive. Took out the generators then started tossing Boombats just behind him, to try and explode him off his shelf. Then I alternated Thudslugs and Boombats and pinned him in a corner so he couldn't go through the door. Within about ten seconds I'd reduced his energy and stamina to nil, then took him alive. Might have been luck.

my bad, i shot him with the boombat to get him Off of the ledge or whatever, then when he was on the ground, I switched to the thudslug and just shot him with a thud slug, and then the electric shock inf ammo gun(forgot what its called) , then thud slug, then the electric shock crap, thud slug, electrick shock crap...etc....in that order and eventually he will dizzy and u can just bag him alive.

doing it that makes it so much easier....if you dont do it that way, its almost impossible to stop him

peace

Yeah that's what I tried. I guess I probably hurt him too much already cause it took like three Boombats to get him off that ledge. Time to reload and try it again.

Finished this game 2 days ago and love it. If I were to rate it, I would rate it in the 90s :D

The level before the final boss is crazy...god I love this game :D

I agree. I would love to see the next Metroid game use this engine.

RETURNING IT AFTER 2 HOURS OR SO OF PLAY... I captured the first three bosses.

OK, here's the deal... I hate FPS... I just get dizzy and nauseous playing them...

I loved Abe's Oddworld and Abe's Exodus on PS1, I really liked Munch's X-Box game.

I would rather buy Munch's game again and return this... I just cannot get into it...

I have tried to play the entire game in 3rd. person with very little use of 1st. person... but playing 3rd. person is getting me nauseous too... I don't like the camera control, it is too slow. Sure you can use the black button, but it is too damn slow for me.

For a huge fan of Oddworld, I am disappointed in the game... yes change is good for games... I just hate 1st. person shooters and it ruins the whole game for me.

Honestly, from what I remember I feel Munch's game was actually prettier... just me!

This game fucking rocks. SOOOOOO SMOOOOOOOOTHh

Polished, really, really polished. Lorne has delivered an absolute gem

I haven't gotten to the "twist" yet, but I finally got out of the western themed stuff and into the forest area. Damn, this game is beautiful. In the waterfall area I just stayed in one spot and rotated the camera around to take it all in. The caveman drawings on the forest rocks were a great touch.

yeah, but the final fight actually sucked.

Ok ok ok, I know this is a really stupid question.

How do I capture the bounties? I can capture regular enemies no problem, but I'm facing the second guy (wagon train), and silly Stranger won't seem to suck him up!

Also, why is it that when I attack him physically, it seems to hurt me? What is that?

Do I have to lower his stamina or something?

If I can get by easily and kill every boss, then I'll just do that.

Someone SPOIL this game for me,

I got it and got a good 6 hours in I'd say, but I didn't enjoy it so much so I traded it back in..

... what's the big twist / cool thing that happens? Or do you just keep going back and forth between bounty-stores?

Spent some time with the game this weekend...

What can I say? This is one of the best games on the XBOX, hands down. The game plays beautifully. The character movement feels so good (especially while running at full speed) and handles perfectly while the shooting elements actually manage to feel better than a great number of dedicated FPS titles on the system. Just running around the massive world feels wonderful.

The game design reminds me of Jak 2 and 3 in a way, actually, but is more streamlined. The scenarios offer so many chances for creativity and there has been plenty of variety. I'd say the general game design and control systems absolutely blow the doors off of games such as Jak 2 and the Ratchet series.

Atmosphere is one of the most impressive aspects, I'd say. The sound and visuals work together to create something very rich which simply begs to be explored. The visuals are actually among the most impressive I've seen on the XBOX, both artistically and technically. There are points where the screen is filled with Far Cry levels of vegitation even...

I guess there isn't a whole lot more I could say about the game that hasn't already been said, but my excitement cannot be contained.

been playing this game and it is fun and the cut scenes are mind blowingly gorgeous.

although i have yet to see why it got all the scores of 9.0 yet. gunna save judgement till done.

so anyone wanna give tips on how to get the boss's alive. i got the 1st two alive and seems they always die from now on.

This game puts so many others to shame. On a technical level it's amazing; zero loading (even when you load a save, it's only a couple seconds), huge beautiful environments, no pop-up or slowdown, etc... Would've been nice if Fable had such a nice engine.

I thought the second half of the game felt a little hurried.
The way you're given the boat and sets of armor so rapidly, for example. Felt like there should've been a little more meat inbetween.

Other than that I was completely blown away.

The light blue bar under their health needs to be depleted to "stun" them. I'm not having much luck with keeping them alive, but I figure as long as I'm taking the rest of the bandits alive I'll have more than enough money.
