As a fun aside, I swapped over my faulty PS3 this afternoon for a new one, and it's still screwed over wi-fi. I can only assume it's the new TV. Ace. So I'm now wired...

I've bought Gripshift - if anyone wants to swap for Lemmings (although I don't know how) send me a message over PSN.

Fun, this.

did you actually check how is your wireless setup as? Make sure its mode is compatible with PS3.

Maybe this could deserve a new thread ? Dunno... but since i'm still junior I can't make one.

Noticed also that some of you swapped GAF nick and PSNID :P

And maybe we should add the games we play online ?

I could manage it if a new thread was created. Anyone puh-leeze ? :o

yeah i think a new thread with the games you own would make more sense..

As for my PS3 I stuck some MP3s on there and turned off my PC and listened to music and surfed GAF (although it seems to get errors when i view Gaming Discussion.. just a load of wierd characters appear) from my bed. I never listened to music from my 360 before because its just too damn loud.. while the PS3 was running silent, then i stuck on F@H while the tennis was on and checked back during the ad breaks. Its a brilliant piece of kit, I just cant wait for Playstation Home.

I connected my ps3 directly with my previous ps2 RGB Full Scart. Picture looks crystal clear.

When I tried to play a DVD the picture comes in green. When I connect the composite wire that comes with my PS3 the DVD playback looks solid but the picture isn't as sharp as the full RGB Scart.

I would like to keep a full RGB Scart and play DVDs on my TV without disconnecting and connecting the composite wire.

Any ideas anyone?

Did you set your AV out on RGB or Y/Pb/Cr (or whatever)
Maybe the problems comes from this, dunno.

This, or your SCART isn't a true RGB one. How many connectors are there ? Should be 20

I have the same problem, which happens with the PS2 as well with official SCART/RGB cables. I do wonder why they would keep up the macrovision protection with the SCART/RGB cables (I am talking about the official Sony Scart/RGB one).

Yes, there are 20 connectors. I also tried different settings but still I still received a green signal.
Also i have a european PS3 and tried various Region 2 DVDs (as it said on the console manual).
If I recall correctly, the old fat PS2s used to have the problem, and Sony fixed the problem with the new thin PS2s.
i dont get it :(

yea i think this is supposed to be some kind of copy protection
(because there is no macrovision on rgb or something like that)
... doesn't make much sense nowdays thou

Right, just bought a HDMI enabled 32" LCD. Lovely.

Except that now my wi-fi connection is screwed and I can't sign in to the PSN. In fact, it won't even see my router.

Any ideas?
mine did the same until I updated to 1.6 via ethernet cable and then rescaned and my hotspot showed up.

Euro Gaffer with a PAL copy of Motorstorm and Resistance...

Panajev/Panajev2001a/Italy/GMT+1: Rome (well, actually Turin...)

Just tried to use an USB converter (Super Box4) for PS2 Controller on PC. Plugged it in my PS3 and was really surprised when the START button worked. Unfortunately neither analog nor digital controls work, buttons X and O work, but are exchanged.

Question for all owners of Motorstorm.

Do you guys get a slight pause on the introduction?

It happens on mine, 2 or 3 times during the intro. No biggie really, game runs smooth as silk, I haven't noticed any slowdown yet.

To everyone that's tried to help with my wi-fi problem, here's the story.

Got PS3 on Thursday (1.54) and immediately updated to 1.6 via a download on a USB stick. No web connection as of yet as I didn't even try.

Once 1.6 is on, I tried to set up wi-fi. Router works fine with PS3, no problems, until Sunday.

On Sunday I bought an LCD HD screen and a HDMI cable. Connected it all up, lovely picture, but no wi-fi connection. Works fine via an ethernet cable.

Took PS3 back to Gamestation - new one does exactly the same, on both 1.54 and 1.6. Again, works over ethernet, just not wi-fi. It just doesn't pick up the routers in my block, before the new TV there were 2 or 3 (including mine) now now. Sometimes it'll pick up next doors but lose it again instantly.

Gotta be the TV or the HDMI cable, or the configuration. PC works fine with the wi-fi still, haven't yet tried the Wii which is right next to the PS3.

To everyone that's tried to help with my wi-fi problem, here's the story...

You can prolly connect it on composite to rule out the HDMI cable. Same with old TV if its still around.

Pretty strange though, none of them should interfere with wifi frequencies. But if your signal level was rather low originally, even small distortion may kill the rest of it.

Personally I didnt have any problem setting wifi running, except having to type all those SSID and WFA keys with mobile-like keyboard :p. Ah, once my router was gone of connection list after playing with security methods, but restarting the PS3 and router did help. I also use HDMI and LCD TV.

Cheers for the reply. I'll have a go tonight with the Wii to rule that one out, then try a SCART cable on the LCD to rule out the HDMI cable. I could try moving the PS3 further towards the router I guess, but that's not ideal.

At worst, it's just a cable running across the floor whenever I want to play online.

Got my PS3 yesterday (PSN sugapunk2007)

Impressions

WHAT I LIKE:

I have to say, Motorstorm has impressed the hell out of me.

I HATED the game for the first 30 minutes, but now I've got the hang of it I friggin' love it. I also love the fact that it's rock hard (well, I suck at it, anyway). It means that there will be some seriously longetivity in it after all for me.

I have also been majorly impressed with the PQ of the HD Casino Royale trailer - totally smokes the PQ of anything I've downloaded of XBL.

Some of the PSN games feel much more fully featured than XBLA games. I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk of Lemmings on here as IMO it's clear that Team 17 spent a lot more time and money on this than they did on Worms XBLA. Gripshift is well polished and Tekken DR looks better than expected.

Fast, slick interface. Not as girl-friendly as 360 but much faster to access stuff.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE

Outside of Motorstorm, graphics have failed to impress. I'm yet to see a game on the PS3 that even slightly touches GoW in terms of textures and detail. Resistance looks like a game which started life on PS2 to me, really unimpressed and feels like a major step back from GoW. But PDZ looked crap and that was a 360 launch title so I'm expecting much better very soon.

GTHD is definitely over-rated graphics-wise IMO - has failed to impress outside of the car selection screen where the car models are indeed :o

Blast Factor sucks. People who like this game obviously havent played through Mutant Storm or Geometry Wars.

Controller is :( I had to change the controls on motorstorm because my finger kept slipping off the CONVEX trigger. WTF! Convex?! Seriously Sony what the hell were you thinking of. I'll get RSI using those. So it's back to using the X button or right thumbstick for acceleration. Which IMO is a step back from the Dreamcast-born 360 trigger combo.

So, overall, some good, some bad. I do feel some serious potential from the PS3 though. It's a cliche, but it's true. It feels like a machine made with the future in mind. The graphics difference is non-existant at this stage, GoW looks amazing on 360, Motorstorm looks amazing on PS3. It seems that 360 has its strengths in texture quality and up-close detail, while PS3 has its strengths in rendering huge well-lit environments.

My wife got interested with Lemmings, but then she asked if we can play coop, and I had to say no. :( We need some more girl friendly coop games! (So long wait till LBP is out :()

I agree with most of what you've put, except this bit - the missus wouldn't touch the 360 interface with a barge-pole, but managed to navigate to exactly where she wanted without any problems yesterday.

I'm used to a Japanese PSP though, so having X to confirm and O to go back is taking real effort!

That's fascinating, actually. I had never, ever, considered co-op lemmings before, but it makes perfect sense. Let's send psychic vibes out and hope that it happens. Co-op puzzle games where you share the same 'materials' to solve the puzzle are a nice idea.

O-o, photos of PAL mainboard are out already:

This is a PAL replacement for EE/GS chip:

Yea, would be a lot of fun and this should not be too hard to implement. I have no idea why they have not done it. :(

My mate's bought a PS3, only problem is he lives 250 miles away! I was down there this weekend and had a go, he's got Resistance, Motorstorm and F1. The machine is a huge, sexy beast. The games are great, I don't know why everyone is so critical of them on this site, Motorstorm is quality - even using the motion control - and looks great. He plays Resistance online, but I've told him the single player gets better the further you get. He showed off a few movie clips, nice, and he's sent off for the free James Bond film. Didn't play it that long, went out drinking instead but man the PS3 is great, I'll get one sometime.

Just had a thought - could it be the wi-fi channel thing? Not my strong point, but maybe if next door are using the same channel as me (1, I think, or maybe 11) would changing mine to 9 or something help here?

There's a possibility that they set up their wi-fi at the same time I set up my TV... :|

My impressions exactly, at first. The game gets seriously beautiful later on, It doesn't have the immediate OMFG candy of Gears, but the later areas are huge and just dense with stuff.

Some really impressive physics on display too.

honestly, I think some of the hate is just because its expensive, and some is just because railing on the PS3 is the thing to do these days. Its a lovely machine

The price thing I don't get?

When you're buying any product you spend more to get the best, washing machines, TVs, computers, you always pay more for the comprehensive version, and I'd say the PS3 is the ultimate package.

The way my mate was showing it off, there's nothing else that compares, it has the high definition player, it has great online with Resistance, it has a web browser - a full blown OS if you want, you can store all your media on it - and even stream it to your PSP, it recognised all his wireless blutooth gadgets - he's using a wireless keyboard/mouse, we've seen the community "HOME" where you can share media with your mates, it's probably better then my computer and it will last longer. £425 for that, my computer cost twice that and will be obsolete soon, PS3 will last about 7 years, man I'm talking myself into buying one of these, I think if Heavenly Sword was at launch I would've got it.

Went into Tesco today and saw the PS3 games.. rather suprised to see a healthy amount of shelf space for the games, much bigger than the Wii section. Virtua Tennis 3 and Tiger Woods 07 both completely sold out.. which was... odd. Resistance #1 in the charts, Motorstorm #2.

Also can anyone confirm this is what the top downloads looks like in their PSN store? I remember seeing Americans saying they had different lists.
434906234_d264657121.jpg

I've had a Japanese PS3 since launch, but this meant I couldn't try out the backwards compatibility.

I picked up a UK PS3 on Friday.

I've not had much time to play about with PS2 titles. But the 3 PS2 games I tried, I was very impressed.

I played Lego Star Wars 2, MGS3:Subsistence & FF12.

These games typically internally render using the 448 line frame buffer. (Not sure about FF12.)

If you use the Blaze HDTV disc you can get them all to display in 480p on a regular PS2.

I am used to playing these games in 480p using the Blaze HDTV.

The UK PS3 did a great job rendering these games at 576p.

They looked as good as with the Blaze HDTV disc on the PS2.

I am very please that the PS3 is able to do this. These games look better on the PS3 than they do on a regular PAL PS2 when not using the Blaze HDTV disc.

I am using a component connection, set to 720p.

I got mine on launchday, and ofcourse I registered my PSN name beforehand when we could do it. So currently I'm known as:

VashNL / Vashu / GMT+1 Amsterdam

I'll see if I can add you lot to my list. I currently don't have either MotorStorm or Resistance, since I'm still tied between those two. Can't figure out which one to get first.

Are you sure this isn't your TV upscaling? Weren't people complaining of bad scaling on PS3? What TV have you got? I'm looking for one at the moment.

Hmmm, just remembered this problem with the PS2 as well.
Well, I never had any problems with my PS2 with RGB scarts and DVD playback.
But now that I think about it, the scart I used with my PS2 to read DVD's had 20 connectors, but wasn't a TRUE RGB scart. Yeah, in fact, some vicious scart manufacturers put those 20 pins, but only 10 are connected actually, so in fact it's an S-VIDEO Scart (I think it's 10, and 8 for composite scarts).
Problem is, you won't get the same quality than with an RGB cable. But as far as I remember, there's a good improvement as compared too Composite.

You can also find RGB scarts with a small switch too, with a "DVD" position and a "Other" position. Just have to switch it when you play a DVD. Problem is, I don't know how this works exactly. But I guess the switch and the DVD position will just make the cavle use the 10 pins for S-Video.

I think the best you can do is to test an S-Video Scart and see if you like the image quality. Then you could buy an RGB scart with this switch thing, would be less annoying to switch from games to movies using that, than just having to plu/unplug your console and TV.

Exactly. It starts out somewhat weak, but the visuals end up looking fantastic as you progress. Really, though, if you go back and look at the entire game, it's actually a lot nicer looking than people seem to believe. Compare to something like HL2, for instance. Even during the first levels, there is a LOT more geometry being thrown around and lots of subtle details. My first impressions on the night level (second area) were rather negative, but if you go back and play it again, you can start to appreciate the amount of detail present.

A lot of this is the result of Insomniac's stylistic decisions. They were PS2 developers prior to this and a lot of techniques used in the game seem like natural extensions of what they were doing on PS2 (with the token shader effects and whatnot thrown in for good measure). There is also the art direction to take into account. I do not which to undermine their achievements here, but it's pretty clear that the results were limited by their approach. I think they could do much better with a sequel. I still feel that Resistance is one of the best looking FPS on the market, though (including the PC).

I have an old 42" Panny Plasma 4th gen, it is downscaling the 576p image to 480p.

I think PS2 games played on a PS3 will still look pretty poor on a 720p LCD screen. In my experience Plasma are much better at handling SD material than LCD.

The point I wanted to make is that the PS3 is outputting PS2 games at a minimum of 480p progressive scan. This is an improvement in how they would be output on a PS2. e.g. MGS3 on the PS2 is a 480i interlaced game, the PS3 turns it into a 480p.

I used to use the Blaze HDTV disc to turn most PS2 games into progressive. I'm very please that the PS3 does this for you, and does it well.

Played the PS3 in my brothers for a few hours over the weekend. And my impressions are meh, there was no WOW factor for me. (Played the PSN demos, Resistance and Motorstorm)

Graphics looked like highend PC graphics, they were nice, but nothing I have not seen before.

Resistance did not do it for me, but I HATE the dual shock for FPS's. Playing online was smooth though.

Motorstorm seemed a little slow (although my fav game at the moment is excite truck), again nice graphics and smooth online.

My favourite game was a demo that was downloaded, something about cells, ironically it was a game that used very little of the features of the PS3, but it worked really well on the Dual Shock...

I think for me the PS3 seems like a Playstation2+, better and more, but in same vein. If you like the PS2 you will really like the PS3.

I do not think the price is unreasonable considering that it has a blueray integrated and I am sure that the games will get much better, but for me it does not appeal and I would sell it if I won one.

We are going to rent a Bluray movie and see what that is like (hellboy I think), I am looking forward to that.

It's not a dual shock, though. The layout is the same, but the analog sticks are worlds better than the previous controllers.
