Official PAL PLAYSTATION®3 Launch Thread

Depends to which format you want to convert to.
MPEG-2, MPEG-1, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC or MPEG-4 SP.
I'd go with H.264 and I am trying to nail down the perfect settings using MeGUI with x264 encoder, but you could probably go with something like PS3 Video 9, altho it doesn't work too well for me when converting my .MKVs that have PCM audio (the AAC resulting from it is full of noise). That is if you're doing it with a PC.

Anyone thinks Sony would be so kind as to start supporting AVC High Profile with Unrestricted Level instead of just Main Profile (as well as not limiting audio to only AAC for AVC encodes)? Simply remuxing my H.264 encodes would be so much better than having to transcode (and lose more quality, unless I want to rerip stuff and re encode which is way too much time consuming).

That thread and post was a nice help, altho I ended up tweaking the settings I already use to make H.264 encodes after experimenting and finding out that Main Profile Level 4.2 doesn't work (I thought it did since PS3 Video 9 lets you choose it, but I'd get no video playback on PS3 with it).
The list of stuff I wish the PS3 supported is growing! (H.264 High Profile Level Unrestricted, FLAC, WavPack, MKV or at least AVC+PCM/Vorbis/MP3 instead of only AVC+AAC)

Got mine launch day w/ Motorstorm & RFoM. Girlfriend's not too impressed, thinks Resistance "could be on PS2". I'm very impressed with the physics and the amount of detail. Motorstorm is hard, that it all I have to say :)

Anyway, I have a problem: I have it connected via HDMI and when I put a DVD in the signal goes (TV says "no signal"). Should I connect through something else? Should I take the PS3 back?

PSN: EanF

I actually like Resistance. I don't think the game is too inspired, but it damned well executed and the physics are subtle but extremely impressive. Multiplayer is also good but the matchmaking and EU servers in general seem to be a little flakey at the moment.

I'm having alot of fun with Resistance, it's a cool game and I still haven't reached the much talked snow levels. Imho the game is very pretty, altho I'd like it much more if it was possible to understand where a level ends BEFORE completing it (I don't like entering a room while I am still not done exploring a level just to discover I have completed it).

I have a friend in Australia planning to buy a US unit off Ebay.

What are the issues if any with regards to region specific lockouts?

* DVD playback limited to US
* Blu-ray playback limited to US
* BC limited to US.

Things I'm not too clear on are:

* Is it possible to create an Australian PSN account and access the Australian Store?
* IF he buys Australian released games, can he play on Australian servers?
* If he buys other region's games, can he play on Australian servers?

Thanks for any advice.

PS2/PS1/DVD are Region Locked based on their previous region - So in his case, his PAL PS1/PS2/DVD discs won't work on the US PS3

Blu-ray movies are Region Locked, but the region make up is different from DVD.
according to wiki:

A/1 - North America, Central America, South America, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
B/2 - Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
C/3 - India, Nepal, Mainland China, Russia, Central and South Asia.

* Is it possible to create an Australian PSN account and access the Australian Store?

Yes it's possible to create an australian PSN account and have access to Australian Store. You can create as many accounts as you want, each with different region, giving you access to all the stores.

* IF he buys Australian released games, can he play on Australian servers?

Yeah, i think so D:

* If he buys other region's games, can he play on Australian servers?

If the game's server is region specific, then no.

I'm probably going to get the PS3 next week.
My gf wants me to get it :lol
I've been talking about it since december, but I didn't get it at launch cos I was a bit
skeptical about the BC issue and stuff, I've still a huge PS2 backlog to finish.
But my gf was like: you've been talking about it for months and now you're not
getting it cos of the BC, you still have the PS freakin 2.
I was like, sh********t, she's right :lol
Also she's willing to pay 250 euros, she likes singstar and home :D

So I have a few questions regarding the PS3.
1. I have a DVI (HDCP compliant) TV.
Is it okay to buy the original Sony PS3 HDMI cable and buy a DVI converter, will it work?
Is there anything I have to pay attention to? DVI-D, I and stuff?
(I don't want to buy a HDMI-DVI cable, cos
I'm gonna buy a new TV at the end of the year with HDMI, otherwise I'll end up with two cables)

2. How many PSN user profiles can I make on the PS3?
My gf wants to get online, when singstar is released.
Is it possible to make one for myself and one for my gf, with different PSN usernames?

Yeah you can. Don't know what's the max. But i've made 5 so far and can still create more.
Each Username uses its own saves too.

Sorry if I idn't make myself clear. I really like it too and now I'm further along it's loking better and better. I wasn't a huge FPS fan last-gen so I don't know what the standard is, but I feel a lot more immersed with the amount of stuff on screen and the physics, it really draws me in.

I've not summoned up the courage to try online yet. Too afraid of getting my ass handed to me :)

1. You can even buy non original cable and it still be working :) Since your tv has DVI with HDCP it cannot be analog(which is DVI-A), therefore must be compatible with HDMI (as both dvi-i and dvi-d are). There is some pin length incompatibility between dvi-d and dvi-i though, but I'm 90% sure that your tv is dual link dvi-i, so look for hdmi-dvi-i convertor.

2. 1 master and any number of sub accounts pro region iirc.

Or you can get one of those HDMI--DVI cables. No need for convertors.

Hey guys
I have an external HDD (Laptop 2.5”) connected via USB but it don’t pick up?
AM i being a retard here? Or do these not work with PS3??

should be fine. I'm using a western digital 2.5" external one. Bus powered is very handy when moving back and forth between PC and PS3.

How is it formatted? I think FAT32 is the highest the PS3 will recognise - it won't handle NTFS.

ITS NTFS
i have a few ( I get them off our IT dept when they get rid of the Dell laptops in our Toshiba switchover (I think i have 5 x 40GB drives and an adaptor!))
I know where the problem is now.
THANKS A LOT!

Thx guys.
Let's play some Resistance and Motorstorm next week :D

Euro-gaffers can't play against US-gaffers right, since the servers are separated?!

For the time being nope.
But I think one of the next updates to Resistance will change that, allowing JPN NA and EU to play together (not sure about this tho).

That's correct. It will be in the may patch.

Hmm, Sony's BC list says that ICO has perfect compatibility, but during all cutscenes I get pops in the audio. Happens on my brother's PS3 with his own copy of ICO, too. SotC works perfectly, as the BC list suggests it would.

Meanwhile Okami has only a 1 star rating for compatibility and yet the only flaw I've seen is crackling audio during the FMV intro.

Sony clears up the confusion regarding the Casino Royale BD:

Those of you entitled to a free copy of Casino Royale on Blu-ray will receive an email next week confirming that one will be heading your way, Sony told Eurogamer this afternoon, finally putting an end to confusion surrounding the giveaway.

"An email will go out at some point next week telling people if they have been successful or not with regards to registering on the [PlayStation] network for their copy of a Casino Royale Blu-ray disc," a spokesperson for Sony UK told us. "Depending on the release date in each particular country the disc will be sent out accordingly."

so... I registered on PSN launch day using the PS3 and everything went ok (I received a couple of confirmation e-mails from Sony on Saturday morning) but the thing is I completely forgot about the "PS3registration.com" stuff where you have to enter your PS3 serial number until today... I fear for my free copy of 007 BD :'(

I want to sign up for a JP PS3 accound so I can download the HSG demo.. But I get a error message regarding what I typed in the ID box. I cant read japanese so I have no idea what it says. Is there a guide somewhere out there on how to do it?

You don't need to do that to get your free copy of Casino Royale. All you needed to do was sign up on your PS3 for a Master Account and it said "the Blu-ray disc offer is limited to one per household" etc

No they don't. The real confusion is whether you had to create an account on the PS3 or whether activating the account that you pre-created before the launch is sufficient. I'd hope the latter is, otherwise they're insisting on everyone creating two accounts just to get the freebie.

I used the account I created in Nov and didn't get a message, I created a new sub account and got the message.

Also in account management, what does the "Activate Playstation" bit do, also isn't stuff meant to disappear off the store if you download it?

Makes no difference according to Sony Germany. They said that you could either log in with your pre-created account or make a new one. The server gave each user a key and in april they will be evaluated by SCEE UK.

They also said, that they couldn't give out any messages after the log in/registration because of the protection of privacy.

Now that Play-asia and yes-asia have both stopped exports to the EU, please can anyone recommend any other similar Asian online games retailers who WILL ship to the EU?

Also, absolutely loving my PS3. Everything about it is SO much more sophisticated and elegant than my 360. A fantastic piece of kit indeed.

Excellent. In that case I shall be expecting a copy of Casino Royale. :D Might have to pick up another movie to keep me going until it arrives, though...

So I decided to put some more effort into the GT HD demo and it's pretty. Some of the later cars are very nice and jaggless. Especially the two last cars. Replays ROCK! I downloaded the top ones from the two last cars (ferrari and that rally car) and it looks really good.

Hmm, I've downloaded a def jam demo of US store, it installed ok, but when I try to run it it says Corrupted data. :P tryed redownloading and reinstalling and same result. anybody else has this error?
All other demos of US store are ok, just played resistance and full auto.

Generally happens when I click to view a thread and when I click back the main page goes like that too. Anyone else get this?

yes same here, deleted cookies/cache and it fixed.

So that whole being able to pay the exact amount in the PlayStation Store... does that still work, because it didn't for me when I bought GripShift just now. I went through the procedure of not putting anything in my wallet until it forces me at the end when I purchase it, but it would only list £5, £10 etc, no figure for the exact price £4.99. Also it was acting kinda funky by occasionally putting French labels on the 'Continue', 'Back', and 'Cancel' tabs.

I had the same issue when I bought Lemmings. Only that the word became Japanese instead. Luckily Lemmings cost exactly the same as one amount you could you choose (in Norwegian kroners).

Sucks that the PS3 can’t play AVI!
Downloading a WMV converter as it can play this can’t it?

No, it cant play WMV. For proper conversion look at Lain's post at the top of the page.

Since a lot of people here at GAF are intrested in sales numbers I thought I share what I have found regarding the Swiss launch: this article says that -according to Sony- 14'000 units have been sold in the first 2 days. That is quite a lot for such a small country!
Also the article asked some big retailers like Mediamarkt about their stock: initial stock was 300 (for one store), now they got about 20 left. One store said they already got a new shipment because they sold out.

I thought I should share this about how to convert videos for PS3:

Some people here are using PSPVideo9 to convert videos with mixed results. It doesn't even seem to be able to convert mkv-files so I'm pointing you to a tool which has better picture quality, batch encoding and converts every format flawlessly:

http://winnydows.com/xvid4psp.html

XVID4PSP was originally designed to create xvid-files compatible with the PMP mediaplayer for the PSP. However, with recent versions it also supports MPEG-4 files for the PS3. So far all videos I had converted worked just fine and were recognized by the PS3

You should also install the recommended tools on the site like Quicktime or the .NET

http://ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=65143

Seems to work really well.
