Official Phil Harrison Keynote @ GDC Thread.

guys this is GDC. The presentation was about user created content and its future in the console gaming space, not "look at the awesome PS3 lineup" You shouldn't be disappointed by the conference, they really delivered. LBP is now one of my most anticipated games

Amazing presentation!

Cant wait for E3 (All the big guns will be shown at E3).

Also guys, no need to say "THATS IT?!!"... It was Developer's conference to show "developers" what there system is going to bring, NOT to show developers what games they are making...

Now i can go home in peace...

get it... Home... :)

see you guys in 2 hrs.. Travel time!

it's called Second Life. it's been on the PC for years. it bored me then and i doubt now that it looks prettier that it won't bore me now.

is it a good idea? yes. have they done it well? yes.

but it's been done before.

What if you could have your Home under a bridge?

Its definetly obvious while Home "Basic" is free Home "Premium Content" is gonna cost quite the premium.

What makes you think its gonna cost "quite the premium" so far all PSN games have been incredibly cheap for what they offer, you have no proof of high prices with Sony's online content.

Will there be pay content? Well duh! but what makes you think it'll be Premium price?

Absolutely stunning. This is the PS3 launch perfected. With hardware and software done awesomely, Sony has the makings for a full turn around.

I cannot wait to play with the stuff shown today.

How long before everyone gets pissed that you have to buy all the furniture and stuff like that to decorate your living space. Microtransactions, folks. Still, I think Home is very cool.

It's already over? Meh.

Can't say I'm impressed. Home looked like Second Life HD but I'm not really interested in virtual worlds and stuff like that. What about all the copyright issues? Is Sony going to pay them or what?

Little Big Planet would be nice if it was a downloadable game but 60 bucks for a 2d platformer? No thanks.

Heh, not only is Home a responce to XBL, it also seems like one big counterpoint to every big idea Nintendo's dished out lately all rolled into one app.

Personal avatars= Miis
if you can use them in games outside of home, yes. otherwise no.
Home creation & decorating= Animal Crossing
yep.
Arcade games= Virtual console
nope. playing games in a virtual world doesn't really interest me. they already have something that's an answer to xbla and vc though, and it's already pretty good.
Bowling/ traditional games= Wii Sports
not even close. wii sports isn't popular because of the games, but because of the simplicity of playing them. even if you bowl using the sixaxis motion sensing, going into live and bowling is going to be a lot more complicated than just loading wii sports.
Proposed ability to own a pet= Nintendogs
potentially... but only if the pet has AI and needs looking after... otherwise no.
Who wants to bet they'll have some sort of quiz application, not unlike Brain Age?
doesn't seem a long shot.

Man, what about NOW? No news about firmware updates? I guess we just get a big dry spell until the Fall? which will probably be LATE fall. Or winter.

Kinda wish they wouldve touched on what the March update does exactly, but thats just me nitpicking an otherwise amazing keynote. Bravo!

LITTLEBIGPLANET™: EXPLORE, CREATE, SHARE.
Be Part of a Global PlayStation®3 Community Creating a Brand New Gaming World;
Genre-Defying, Astoundingly Imaginative –It’s More Than Just Gaming

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 7, 2007 -- Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios today revealed a glimpse of the LittleBigPlanet™ – the first creative gaming experience for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) – at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California. Developed by Media Molecule, LittleBigPlanet is a new PS3 community-based game with a hugely innovative concept behind it. Players meet on a blue and green planet scattered with individual plots – and use their character’s amazing abilities to play, create and share what they build with other gamers throughout the world via PLAYSTATION®Network.
The LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character’s powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve – requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As players begin to explore, their creative skills will grow and they will be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings – the first step to sharing them with the whole community.
Characters have the power to move anything in this glued and stitched-together 3D landscape; they have the power to design, shape and build both objects and entire locations for others to view and play. There’s no complicated level editor; all of these skills can be learned by simply playing the game. Creativity is part of the gameplay experience and playing is part of the creative experience. Players can make their world as open or as secretive to explore as they like. When it’s ready, they can invite anyone within the LittleBigPlanet community to come and explore their patch – or can go and explore everybody else’s.

SCEA Announces Little Big Planet
2-2-2-2

“We were confident that PS3 would be the platform to lead the way in creative gaming, and LittleBigPlanet brings this concept to life spectacularly,” said Phil Harrison, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. “By giving players the power to shape and share an entire virtual world via PLAYSTATION Network, we've created the space for PS3 owners to realize their creativity and craft their own unique gameplay experience.”

So, how does it work?

 Play the game, learn the skills and then find your own way to play. There isn’t a set solution to anything – you live LittleBigPlanet however you want to.

 Create your own content – customize your character and build your own locations. You have the power to rearrange anything in this unbelievably tactile landscape.

 Build, move, create, collaborate – then share content with friends or publicly by inviting the whole world to come and visit your own location on LittleBigPlanet.

Key features:

• There’s not just one way to play. Players craft their own individual experience
• Unlimited possibilities for user-created content – players can customize everything: their characters, the landscape around them and their own patch on LittleBigPlanet
• Players discover and win new skills and items to aid them on their creative journey
• Initial levels will be provided – endless others will be user-generated on a global scale. LittleBigPlanet will change every day as players contribute their own levels
• Online and offline multiplayer modes – play alone, work as a team or get competitive
• LittleBigPlanet global community for players to get involved with: includes player comments, rankings and easy communication with new and existing friends

A demo of LittleBigPlanet for PS3 is slated for the PLAYSTATION Network this fall. The full version will follow in early 2008.

Are you f*cking kidding me? It's like you Nintendo fans are from another planet.

Personal avatars= The Sims?
Home creation & decorating= The Sims?
Arcade games= XBLA?
Bowling/ traditional games= Wii Sports... hahaha what?
Proposed ability to own a pet= fable 2 amirite?

Anyway, I agree with whoever said HOME, as a matchmaking service, seems way too cumbersome. I hope there is a standard, more streamlined way to send invites and initiate a game without having to jump into HOME and walk around looking for your buddies.

You don't have to though. So is "never" the answer your question-markless question is looking for?

have you read any of my other posts here? lbp looks awesome.

it's not being a troll to say 'home doesn't remotely appeal to me' because it doesn't.

i can see why it appeals to some people as i can see why second life appeals to some people.

it's not being a troll to point out that this has basically been done before to correct someone saying the opposite.

sorry if that offends you but you'll just have to deal with it. home isn't going to be for everyone.

which is why it wouldn't surprise me if nintendo are cooking up something similar. Home is basically what I imagined Animal Crossing would become before the Wii was announced without a hard drive. It would be a missed opportunity if Nintendo doesn't allow animal crossing to tie all of the loose ends together in the Wii menu. Playing virtual console games in your AC house was done on the GC... the Miis will clearly replace the AC character, and the DS indicated an online shift so I'd expect it to go the same way. It should have been preinstalled, however, and nintendo's lack of storage space will mean they can never match what Sony is doing with all of the integration. the fact Nintendo already has all of this stuff in one form or another on the Wii makes it seem even worse that isn't integrated in any way

Yes, because discussing what Blu-Ray playback differences are happening in an upcoming firmware update are the best thing to talk about at the Game Developers Conference.

Flying Wedge Home CONFIRMED!!

Choreographed Gang-dancing ftw

Home, LittleBigPlanet & everything else looks awesome.

Question, though. What details, if any, did we get on what will be:

1. On the PSN store today/tomorrow.
2. What's in the big update coming at the end of the month, to coincide with the European launch.

well I am asuming that they will let you access the XMB from in game and send invites ect that way. Home seems more like a hang out until you decide what to play, not the only way to get an online game started.

Nintendo will have to try pretty hard for Animal Crossing Wii to trump this. I think if it isn't hindered by friendcodes then it could match HOME in many ways, but I'm not that optimistic.

SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT INC. ANNOUNCES
GROUND-BREAKING, NEXT-GENERATION 3D ONLINE-USER COMMUNITY
FOR PLAYSTATION®3 – “Home”

Free Download to Allow Broad User Interaction in Highly Detailed Community Environment; Opens Door to User-Created Content, Collaboration and Commerce
TOKYO and SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 7, 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced the unveiling of a first-of-its-kind 3D online user community service for the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. The service, known as “Home,” will enable users to create their own avatar and explore a real-time virtual community, as if they are playing a detailed 3D game for PS3. The service will become available globally beginning in fall 2007.
Home will be demonstrated at the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, California on March 7 as a key element of SCEI Worldwide Studios’ President Phil Harrison’s keynote presentation titled “Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Videogames.”
Home is a real-time online 3D, networked community available on the PLAYSTATION®Network. It allows PS3 users to interact, communicate, join online games, shop, share private content and even build and show off their own personal spaces to others in real time. Home will be available as a free download from the PLAYSTATION®Store and will launch directly from XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) on PS3.

SCEI Announces Home
2-2-2-2

With an avatar uniquely customized according to each user’s preference, users can explore the 3D community that is Home – a sleek, modern environment featuring spacious common areas; custom spaces dedicated to specific games; and personal apartments. Each user is assigned an apartment in Home where they can invite others to join them as they show off their own style in an area they can personalize themselves with furniture, art and other items – even a different view from their windows. They can also show their personal video, pictures and other digital media content found on their PS3 hard drives in their apartments. Very rich interactive communication with others is achieved through built in text, audio and video chat, along with sophisticated emotional animations for each character.
Sharing continues in the “Hall of Fame,” where users can display new 3D trophies that will be unlocked through in-game milestones for the games they own as well viewing the trophies of other users across the PLAYSTATION Network and for other games they’ve yet to purchase.
“This is a significant step forward in the area of user community services and emergent entertainment experiences,” said Izumi Kawanishi, Corporate Executive and CTO Software, SCEI. “While the 3D graphics demonstrate the power of PS3 and the PLAYSTATION Network, the most impressive feature in Home is the variety of ways in which multiple consumers, as well as our third-party partners, can experience the next generation of communication by interacting and sharing among each other. I feel strongly that this unique blend of community, user-generated content, collaboration and commerce will expand the future of computer entertainment.”
Home will go into a closed beta test this spring with a full launch targeted for later this year. By having a broad range of business partners participate in Home – from 3rd party publishers and developers to brands outside traditional gaming categories - along with a powerful selection of upcoming game software titles for PS3, SCEI will continue to expand the horizons of networked entertainment and vigorously promote PS3 as the next generation computer entertainment platform.

I know of "Second Life"... Seriously, it's been done before in bits and pieces EVERYWHERE... Sony just took bits and pieces from here and there, chuncks for Second Life, polished them up nice and shiny, then put them together in one package... That's the POINT of my post, not disputing if it was done before or not... sheesh...

Some people will like it, some won't... and *shock*, some may use it and eat it up... It's the community aspect Sony was missing, they finally get it and now people are doing their best to downplay it... "Sony doesn't have the achievements, another reason why MS is gawdly", "oh, what's that, trophies? Who cares"... "Sony doesn't have stuff like Mii's, har har", "oh, whats that, they have avatars now? Who cares"... And now Sony has a service that the others don't have in total, time to downplay...

Between THIS stuff, and especially the games coming out for the PS3, the only thing left is the price... Will this stuff and the games along with Blu-Ray playback justify the price? For some, by reactions in this thread along the lines of, "I'm gonna have to pick up a PS3 now", apparently so...

Fact of the matter is, MS and Ninty as scrambling at this very moment to counter this... and in the end, the consumer wins having more options thanks to competition...

Really what's to match? It basically IS animal crossing. The part that's inovative is actually the only part that interests me: Sharing video and audio content from your PS3. It's also the part that worries me the most because the posibilities for technical hicups are major.

easy people, it doesn´t seem to over just yet.

if the schedule is right, RIGHT NOW the press is on stage having acess to some games. maybe they get to see something...

It's not difficult to figure out.
You will have a standard basic set of furnitures and clothes and they will add content on the PSN market after that for as long as people is buying stuff.
Simple. Expected.

I'm serious, this thing has the POTENTIAL(mind you) to trump wow.

but it looks like a game, and not really an application to be used to navigate games and such.

Imagine a GAF assemble in Home community ... :D

Ok who is building the Gaf Resistance FOM Clan Center and where do we send donations?
Would also be great if you can have a pc in your house and just click on it to pull up the web browser from inside.

How long before Sony gets hit with complaints and lawsuits because of all the underage kiddies posting nudie pics for their virtual walls?

all this does that second life doesn't is the trophies really.

i'm not trolling. you should check out second life if this stuff appeals to you. it's free to do so.

i'll be spending much more time in lbp thank you.
