Group Standings:

P=Played; W=Won; D=Draw; L=Lost; PD=Points Difference; TD=Tries Difference; PF=Points For; TF=Tries For; BP=Bonus Points; PTS=Points

Group A:
England and South Africa being the obvious choices here, with South Africa to take the number one spot with out a loss, England in second with the loss to Sout Africa and a possible loss to some one else, possible for the somoans or tongans to have a good day.. but unlikely, USA to place last.

Group B:
Australia to win, Wales to place. Haven't followed canadas rugby team to closely, but assume they're not the greatest and thus wont be of any impact. Japan has pace but lacks greater team coordination, and the islander team is once again the possiblity of a threat.

Group C:
New Zealand to dominate, much like the rest of the world cup, Scotland to place, Struggling to swim for the others.

Group D:
France and Ireland, some of the french players look like bears.

Hello, hello.

Its sad being in Boston when everyone is in France. Yet, nothing a pint and an Irish breakfast won’t fix tomorrow while watching France/Argentina.

Also, for those interested OLN will be playing a number of matches including all of those that the Eagles play.

:lol I was just starting to make a similar thread...thanks for saving me some work!

haha no prob, tried to make a fancy banner and all.. but my computer imploded and i lost it, so gave up!

Here’s my picks:

A: England is offering their worst side in ages. South Africa will stomp and either Tonga and Samoa will follow. The USA side is extremely impressive a shame we’re in the second most difficult group.

B: Canada, like the USA also has an extremely impressive side but with Japan offering the best team they’ve had in history and an always strong Wales, Australia, and Fiji sides the North boys will be left in the dust. This will be the most exciting group to watch. After watching Australia tumble in the Tri-Nations their spot is not guaranteed.

C: All Blacks will undoubtedly sweep this group. Scotland will underperform and Italy, Romania, and Portugal will all show great development, though not as much as the USA or Canada.

D: Another extremely difficult grouping. France should undoubtedly conquer all here and should make a deserved appearance in the finals. Ireland and Argentina will compete to follow and Georgia and Namibia will refer to this grouping as the group of death.

I see a potential lose on the cards for South Africa against Samoa. Samoa nearly toppled England 4 years ago and when they get going can be frecious (although if they don't get out of first gear they'll get thumped) and South Africa have an appalling away record, in particular in the Northern Hempishere.

Simiarly I think Fiji can get a win against Wales. The worry with the Fijians though is in if they can get their shit sorted out off the field.

Agrentina will beat Ireland.

Doesn't feel like the Cup starts tomorrow. Maybe that's because we're still only half way through our domestic comp (but that was the same back in 03) or because its being played up North. Still, the player being talked about in NZ the most isn't even at the Cup (Stephen Brett).

Never Forget.

As an aside.
'87 Captain: David Kirk, Rhode Scholar
'07 Captain: Richie McCaw, Rhode Scholar if not for his rugby

Great omen.

One more predication, my Kiwi friends will go ballistic when some U Mass student with a tramp stamp mistakes them for Aussies at the pub.

Just don't expect any photos.

The IRB have managed to piss off even their official photographers so most media outlets will not carry photos of the event.

He was studying argiculture at Lincoln University before he became an All Black. Not too sure if he ever graduated, but his High School exam results were astonishing. Scored over 400 in Bursary (aggreate results of all classes with 250 being a B, 300 an A).

Some have called you a potential Rhodes Scholar?

It has been bandied about. It would mean sacrificing a bit of my footy. And you only get one shot at the footy.

Sunday Star-Times columnist Phil Gifford
remembers a dinner he attended at Lincoln
University. An academic told him that if Mc-
Caw - an agricultural science student - weren’t
playing rugby, he’d be a Rhodes scholar. “This
guy said not only was he a good sportsman; as
a student, he was not an A student, he was an
A-plus student.”

wow!

didn't know that (Y)

interesting note... Australias the only team to beat new zealand this yaer i beleive... so lets hope... they can repeat that..

Those are just some of the quick references I found. I got my intial information through personal channels. Similar to how good of a lay I know Carter is.

Put a bet on with a Kiwi regular at work.. the only time the bugger will place a bet is when the All Blacks play but that's understandable.

Will be interesting to see how the top tier teams go this time around. England are going to get slaughtered :lol

Go the Wallabies!

Deadlock deepens in Rugby World Cup media boycott row

PARIS (AFP) — Leading international news agencies on Thursday launched a boycott of the 2007 rugby World Cup, plunging the event into controversy on the eve of its opening game.

Agence France-Presse, Reuters, the Associated Press, Getty Pictures and the German press agency DPA said no text, photo or video news on the World Cup would be sent for 24 hours in protest at restrictions imposed by the sport's governing body, on the transmission of photos during games.

The International Rugby Board (IRB) restrictions will particularly hit the use of action pictures on the Internet.

However, later Thursday, tournament organisers accused the media groups of making "unreasonable demands".

AFP chairman Pierre Louette said: "Fundamental rights are at stake, there is no question of letting them be flouted in the name of the protection of the financial interests of the IRB."

AFP sent a note to its thousands of clients saying: "Negotiations on the coverage of the World Cup between the International Rugby Board (IRB) and an international media alliance including AFP are still deadlocked. Because of this, AFP has decided to join a boycott of the event."

The Reuters news agency insisted it was defending "editorial integrity".

"Reuters regrets this course of action. However, protecting the interests and coverage rights of our global client base is of key importance to Reuters," Monique Villa, managing director media, said in a statement.

"Amid growing confusion and uncertainty over reporting terms, and the IRB's unwillingness to engage with us to resolve the dispute over accreditation terms, Reuters is unable to continue coverage as planned."

The protest action was to be reviewed by the agencies on Friday after new negotiations.

The international news agencies and the World Association of Newspapers strongly oppose conditions imposed by the organisers which allow just 50 photos to be transmitted during each match. This is made up of 20 photos per half and five for each half in any extra time.

At a meeting in Dublin on August 21, the IRB and international media agreed that one photo per second could be transmitted during World Cup games. This would allow 2,400 images per half with a maximum of 6,000 if there was extra time.

This is in line with agreements already made with the organisers of the Olympic Games and football's World Cup.

Late Thursday, the IRB claimed that they had already made concessions and that they were not attempting to shackle the media.

"Rugby World Cup Limited will not be swayed by unreasonable demands and the threat of non-attendance," said a statement.

"It is regrettable that certain members of the media should have decided to suspend pre-tournament coverage. The unjustifiable move is being presented as the direct response to allegedly unreasonable constraints on reporting imposed by the organisers of the tournament.

"Nothing could be further from the truth."

Organisers said that they had increased "by 400 percent the amount of photographs that can be published live during a match on public facing websites".

"Media organisations can now publish 40 photographs per match."

IRB president Syd Millar said the World Cup was expected to earn 90 million pounds (133 million euros) for the IRB.

But the AFP chairman said the IRB's action came after years of mounting restrictions on journalists in their coverage of major sporting events.

"This matter underlines the desire by some organisers to have almost complete control, even if this is to the detriment of real freedom to inform," said Louette.

"The drastic restriction on the number of photos that our clients can use on the internet -- even if the IRB has changed the figure a little from 10 to 40 -- is still unacceptable. We have said this again and again to the IRB."

The agencies are also seeking a clarification of a clause which allows the IRB to use their photos for promotional reasons without recourse.

AFP and its competitors distribute text, photos, video and graphics to thousands of newspapers and media organisations around the world.

The French government later on Thursday called for a negotiated agreement between the parties.

"It is important that the World Cup can benefit from the media coverage that it deserves," said French Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascale Andreani.

"We hope that an accord that is satisfactory for everyone can be found," the spokesman added.

Good to see the tourny's off to a roaring start. :lol

bah this is ridiculus.

and this.. how will we make funny gif's

Pumas to upset France tonight.

Ireland to take it to Le'Bleus next friday.
It will be a hot night in Helsinki next Friday.

O'Driscoll needs to be avenged!

I’m a McCaw fan but he never seemed the rhodes scholar type. I figured I would’ve heard something about it.

he's a qualified pilot (apparnetly) as well as the best number 7 in the world. That's a lot of work to juggle. he's a smart player as well.

Who is telecasting this in Australia? Channel 7? Don't tell me it's some foxtel exclusive bullshit.

What day and time is the first match?

Does the BBC have the coverage? Or must I find a pub in the Netherlands that has sky sport?

channel 10 (Y)

opening ceremony is at around 3am saturday (so in about 9 hours) followed by the first game argentina and france

edit: damn it.. oh well i got the 2nd question.

The late nights are going to kill me. Apparently the end of tonight's match will finish 6am my local time.

Fuck. That.

New Zealand is easily the safe bet here (in fact, what are their odds at the moment) but I'll still be supporting England and the other Home Nations.

:lol

England and Canada for me...would be cool if the former could retain the World Cup for the first time in the tourny's history, though I really don't like their chances. As for Canada, I'm just hoping we can win a game or two and not get completely rolled over in the other contests.

This weekend is gonna be nuts...along with this there's the Euro '08 qualifiers, Monza GP, US Open finals and opening weekend of NFL action. It's just ridiculous.

1(1) NEW ZEALAND 93.38
2(2) AUSTRALIA 87.03
3(3) FRANCE 86.90
4(4) SOUTH AFRICA 85.40

There is a pretty big drop off in between :lol
But Australia ranks 2nd because they beat NZ earlier this year (along with the Welsh I guess) and France lost to NZ at the end of last year at home and twice to them this year in NZ. SA dropped off because of their poor showing in the 3N.

Australian here, unfortuntely our team look old and one injury away from being on life-support, they'll be competitive but winners, I'm doubtful.

France or All Blacks me thinks.

because I'm horrible at this

BST means Brit time right? So add 1 hour and I get my euro times? That's almost definately right, but if I fuck it up and miss the match I'll be spewing.

Cheers

GO ALL BLACKS

apparently the irish are mega pissy at argentina because they ripped out brian o'driscolls eye or something. i heard from an irish dude that o'driscoll is out for a long long time and this really hurts irelands chances, which is a shame cause ireland were doing great not so long ago.

BOD's playing. There was some concern a couple of weeks back when there was a scrap on the field and he got king-hit by a Kiwi knocking him out cold. Some idiot thought it would be a good idea for Ireland to play a French club team for their warmups and it turned into trench warfare :lol
He deserves everything he gets though. Talk shit, get hit.
