Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

i must say i dont have any freezes or problems since the first day of my ps3/
first day it frooze on me while tapping text into the xmb .

maybe it should have warmed up first and get into a good mood :)

Has anyone here with a JP PS3 tried flashing using the US bios? Is there any advantage to doing this? (i.e. does the console automatically assume it's a US one by default, after the update?)

Thx! :)

Not sure if this is old, but Sony seems to have a much bigger system guide on their site than the manual, including some troubleshooting info.

http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/frame_safety.html

The power indicator on the system front is flashing red and green alternately.

* The interior of the system has become hot. Check whether the system is being
used in a hot location or whether the vents are blocked. Continuing to use the
system in the above condition will cause it to stop functioning. Turn the system off
and leave it unused until it cools down. After the system cools down, turn it on again.

The power indicator on the system front is flashing red and the system does not operate.

* The temperature inside the system has risen too high. Check whether the system
is being used in a hot location or whether the vents are blocked. Touch the power
button on the system front to stop the flashing, and then leave the system unused
until it cools down. After it cools down, turn on the system again.

The latter is what happened with mine, and it did cool down and has operated normally since once I moved it away from other (heat-producing) gear. I'm not sure if it first started flashing red and green alternately, but I'll perhaps be paying a little more attention to those lights in the future.

Also, some details on the "5 people can play downloaded content" thing - has anyone tried this yet? It sounds like it's not tied to your PSN account, so your friend doesn't need to be logged in as you, but it does keep track of how many PS3s are playing that content and limits it to 5 'activated' PS3s.

I purchased some downloadable game content on the PLAYSTATION®Network. Part of the product description says the content can be used or downloaded on up to five (5) activated PLAYSTATION®3 system units. What does that mean?

Answer

This means that the content that you purchased may be used by other users on an activated PLAYSTATION®3 system unit after you downloaded the content onto your PLAYSTATION®3 system unit. Some content may require the user to have a PLAYSTATION®Network account, and other content may require you to have additional game content that may be sold separately. For example, you may need to purchase a full game in order to use the character that you purchased on the PLAYSTATION®Network for the game.

Please review the use restrictions associated with the content you purchased. The content may be played up on to 5 activated PLAYSTATION®3 system units at any one time. PLAYSTATION®3 system units may be deactivated so that you can change which PLAYSTATION®3 system units are activated at any time.

edit - actually, here's more on Activation - it seems the person who buys the content has to activate another user's PS3 to allow them to play that content on their system. This says that this is accomplished via 'Account Management' - so can it be done remotely, then? Rather than the purchaser having to log in on the system that is to be activated?

What does "activation" mean and what does it require?

Answer

For certain types of game content, the game console that the content is intended to be used on must be activated by the PLAYSTATION®Network account that purchased the content. This is an important requirement. If a game console is not activated, then the game console can not be used to access the content that may have already been purchased. The PLAYSTATION®Network account that purchased the game content may activate the game console through the Account Management section

I guess I'll have a look under account management and see what's there. I can't imagine it's as easy as putting in someone else's PS3's name or their online id? How would they get the content after that..would it be freely downloadable for them, then?

Note also that it says you can deactivate consoles to free up one of your 5 'slots' subsequently..which means you could actually share with more than 5 people. You just can only share with 5 at any one time. Moreover, it sounds like you'll be able to share stuff like downloadable maps or whatever. That all kind of sounds too good to be true..

Too bad it doesn't say anything about my problem (3 beeps before shut down)

True. FWIW, when mine crashed to the flashing red light it did beep three times.

I might start a new thread on the whole downloadable sharing stuff since it'd probably get more attention..

My Best Buy just got in 35 20GB systems, unpacked them in front of the lines in the front of the store and they were gone in 1 minute. Although, disturbingly for Sony, I didn't see a single person buy a game.

Why are they producing so many 20GB systems? You would have thought that they would go for maximum profitability on the 60GB systems.

I've put in tons of time on the PS3 thus far, and thankfully, it hasn't crashed yet.

The only odd thing I encountered was a loss of video for 2-3 seconds (the TV lost input, as when it returned, it reported the resolution and other info). No clue what that was about. Anyone have any ideas? I'm using HDMI, though, so that might be the root.

Btw, Sirolf just told me he has the exact same issues as me. That's just too weird to have what should be the only 2 french PS3 users on GAF to get the exact same problem. Especially since his PS3 is a US one and mine japanese. I'll do some more testing tonight...

Yes,the same issues..BTW mine is a japanese one too (60Go) :)

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but could it be the way you guys are hooking it up? Maybe something to do with the way the power is getting to the system... (not sure if your plugs are different or not).

I've tried with both my 500W 220->110V power converter and 220V directly. Same result.

I was going to say, I was just wondering there if maybe there are peculiarities with the french power supply than the unit isn't accounting for, or something like that. But it may just be coincidence..

edit - ah, nevermind..

A french PS3 user on gamekult.com(French site) has his 20GO unit since two days and apparently he has no problems..MMmh very very strange.

you can always come back and buy your game and take your time.

ps3 consoles you buy as fast as you can
20g's are maybe cheaper to build?

While I still think Genji II plays pretty bad (it's like Sonic, you hate playing as everyone except the lead, and the lead guy is still mash-a-thon), I'm playing through it now in between breaks of Zelda and OH MY GOD the graphics are INCREDIBLE. Okamoto is soooo good at visuals even if he can't make gameplay to save his life. If you have an HDTV and a PS3 it's worth a rent and an endurance of the first stage in order to see the gorgeous visuals.

Genji starts out looking pretty meh, but then at one point it's totally eye-popping and almost CG-looking. It's a bit inconsistent, but the first chapter in particular really is not representative of the game's visuals at all. Once you hit chapter 2 things turn around dramatically.

The game itself is pretty tedious and boring though IMO, but the occasional graphic highlights keep you going.

Also, I'm seriously considering getting this a PS3 keyboard/mouse solution. Just a standard USB 2.4GHz wireless keyboard with receiver. The similar Logitech products work, so I would assume this would as well.

Is the JAP PS3 marked 110V or 100V? My japanese consoles are marked 100V.

Japanese unit doesn't play PAL DVDs BTW. Just checked
What it says? Is it because it don't soport PAL signal? Can you try region free PAL DVDs (DVD-R decrypted for example)?

It says it does not support the PAL broadcast standard. Which is a bitch because my first DVD player was a pioneer DV-505 from Japan that played PAL stuff fine. Its region 2 it should play!

You should find one that's all black to match the PS3...Nice KB though.

Got my Japanese ps3. Resistance was average to me at first but after a while it really picked up and now I'm enjoying it a lot.. the graphics really pick up later.

The motorstorm demo is a lot of fun, but did they get rid of the realtime track deformations Sony were touting at e3? I didn't notice them in the demo.

Any hacks for multi-region backwards compatability yet?

I agree about Resistance. The first two areas felt rather dull, but the game really picks up...and continues to pick up with each level. At this point, it might be the best FPS I've played since 2004 (not counting Half-Life 2 Episode 1, which is just an expansion).

As for MS, I believe the track deformation is still in the game...but not on that track. Muddy tracks seem to have it, based on recent videos and shots.

Blimblim, my japanese 60Gb PS3 is working with no problems, I even let it hours on to download demos and works with no problems so far. I have used the 500W transformer from the beginning.

BTW, is the PS Store slow for anyone else? The downloads take WAY too long. It's much slower than the 360 and my PC and I'm not entirely sure why.

Hmm, dunno about recently, but on the launch friday evening I downloaded the Motorstorm demo in just under 5 minutes. Never ran into any speed problems, though with the total lack of content I haven't tried to download anything large since that friday.

Very slow here, using wireless. I also get error messages alot so I can't just leave it and walk away. sucks

PS Store is painfully slow for me, even the menus seem laggy. Downloads seem to take a long time and I've got a really fast connection.

Ricky Bobby looks like ass on my 32 inch 720p Samsung.

I have tried auto, manual 720p AND 1080i in the PS3 settings menu, and I just cannot get it too look like anything but 480p. Is the movie just poorly encoded? Or am I on crack? I am going through HDMI.

talladega nights is supposed to be a poor disc, but it shouldn't look like 480p. a lot of lcds apparently mishandle 1080i, and ps3's blu ray player doesn't output 720p. hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update.

edit: i've been reading up a bit on the way 720p lcds downscale 1080i, and apparently some of them do a much better job over component than hdmi -- including mine. maybe you should try component.

The player doesn't output the most common HD resolution? Oh of course not. Why would it.

So my best solution right now is to output 1080i from the PS3 and have the TV scale it? The problem I have is that the PS3 shows all my possible resolutions, 4080p, 720p and 1080i thanks to the HDMI handshake, so I don't know if I can force it to 1080i to do the scaling.

As soon as this Mototrstorm demo downloads I'll play at again and check the res info in the TV menu. My demo DL speeds seem OK compared to the complaints above.

I don't have component - I traded it in with my PS2 ages ago :-(

I want to say something bad here, but I am biting my tongue.

if you have your ps3 set to 720p, it should automatically switch to 1080i when you play a br movie -- if for some reason it doesn't, you can choose the "custom" option and manually disable 720p and enable 1080i. it's definitely a **** up.

I found a few PS3s again today. They're still in stock for those interested in the montreal area. Gamebuzz like i said earlier in the thread still has the unit for sale but it's a forced bundle (you need to buy 4 games). Zellers at Atwater has a few in stock, no bundles.

it does charge from a standard usb port, but it does not charge from a ps3 on standby. i just plug it into my computer.

Anyone know if the big video rental chains (Blockbuster, Hollywood) are carrying PS3 games for rent? I am curious about the other crap that came out at launch, but definitely not curious enough to buy. :)
