Maybe someone can help me out with this little problem I've just run into. I just tried adding some music to my system with my flash drive(Sandisk micro) and all I'm seeing on the screen is the artist names but with no tracks. I haven't connected my system online to get any updates yet so wondering if thats the problem.

*Edit*OK so its making hit triangle 1st, then display all, then music to reach my music. Is there a way to just get my music by hitting the X button without it saying no tracks?

Don't know if this question's been asked, I'm using HDMI connection is it normal for Blu-ray movies and games to not start if you don't switch to the HDMI video input before turning on the system?

I don't think that's normal. Mine does not do that and I'm using HDMI

Make a folder called MUSIC in the root of your flashdrive...

ypo - guessing here :

HDMI - if you have a HDMI connection inserted when you boot (and it's not your defaultt connection) the system should ask you "I detected a HDMI connection - do you wish to set as default?"

in which case you can set it then (or go into the menu and set it manually)

Then , of course, you'll have to set your TV/output to HDMI.

If this literally is 'the game/movie isnt' starting' - how long have you left it? I get a weird effect on the projector when the Bluray/games start as it recalibrates for whatever out put and i can get a bit of a pause (but it's a few second rather than a very noticable delay)

If you are switching from one output to the other, i'm not sure what effect it would have.

As mentioned, please elabourate and we'll help out.

On a different note, i might have missed this - what is the best program to convert hi-end (720p+) movies to MP4 format? I can transfer over myPSP movies, but i want to see if i can get HD quality movies up and playing on the PS3 (as that would be quite the boon)

There's a ps3video9 program out, very similar to the psp version

I have a question if anyone has any ideas/ a solution, the other day my mic cut out now it seems that my usb ports are dead. Any suggestions or should i just try and exchange it?

It's weird. It's fine with component connection. Anyway, for movies it just doesn't boot if I don't switch to the HDMI video input on my TV first. It stays at a grayish screen. I can bring up the DVD menu using the triangle and I can choose to quit the movie but it actually doesn't quit. If I switch to the input first then it's all good. For games, well I only have one game :lol Resistance it just stays at a black screen. It's right before the Sony Computer Enterntain Presents screen. If I switch to the HDMI input then the game loads and you see the "blah blah presents" in like a second or two. Just like movies if I switch to the video input first everything's fine. Waiting for a handshake?? Wonder if it's my HDMI port on the TV. I don't think I have version 1.3.

edit: I have the system set up correctly with HDMI.

oh awesome! thanks

weird - only thing i can think is the failed handshake happens - but your unit then allows you to switch to component (but it believes that you have HDMI connected somehow). Then when you chose to play - i'd assume that it switches back to HDMI and because the handshake failed it's basically just pumping the signal into oblivion.

It stays at a grayish screen. I can bring up the DVD menu using the triangle and I can choose to quit the movie but it actually doesn't quit.

ah, are you running a 1080p tv? I wonder if your PS3 in this case is trying to output 1080p over component after failing the HDMI check and that's screwing up.

one extra question - it sounds like you have both your HDMI and component connected at the same time... ? if so, just remove the component (i had some weird results when i had both connected when i first got the machine and it might be something similar)

No, I don't have them both connected at the same time. I tested the connections one at time of course. And I didn't set the PS3 connection to component when the HDMI cable is in. The settings are all correct. Triple checked :D Oh I have one of them 1080i TVs that accepts 720P signal :D

"but your unit then allows you to switch to component (but it believes that you have HDMI connected somehow)"

No when testing I turned off the system and then switched the cable. Doing the hold power button down till it beeps thing.

weird - i have absolutely no idea what this could be - some sort of weird macrovision style protection or something like that would -maybe- explain the Bluray , but the games? weird. good luck with it - although it's just more of a hastle than anything right?

Wahey my Jap PS3 has finally arrived here in the UK! OK, so I know the PS3 is all old news to you Americans but it's not even out over here so I feel kinda special.

Anyway, plugged it in, heart started pounding but it works!! It's taking ages to update though :( Love the interface, especially the text-message entry which I think speeds the process up compared to the 360 interface. Also like the fact that when you enter a disc and highlight the game, it comes up with music and info on the game, very sexy.

Oh, and the console itself is really, really elegant in real life. It just looks and feels so damn expensive (because it is).

But OK, it's the games that matter, but aside from the games factor I don't know why everyone has it in so much for the ps3 around here, it seems like a well built console.

Congrats on your PS3 - How much did you pay for it?

I paid £495 for PS3 + Genji + Ridge Racer + NFS:Carbon + Extra Controller.

Not too bad when you consider the PS3 on its own is likely to launch at £399-£425 in the UK. Obviously the games leave a lot to be desired, but downloading GTHD now to cheer myself up about spending all that money! :)

That's including any shipping costs Id imagine? - not too bad actually.

Where'd you import from?

No, sorry, shipping was £40 on top of that so that'd be about right then?

Imported from Hong Kong but it is a Japanese machine. A bit gutted though really because it is region 2 I thought I could play PAL DVDs, but it just says that "PAL is not supported", but never mind, I'll just have to stick which my 360 for DVDs.

Yeah the GTHD is good stuff, I can understand that you would be disappointed about the games, I played the Genji demo and boy did it suck:lol

Get Resistance. Also blast factor is a lot of fun if you like games like mutant storm and Geo Wars and Lemmings seems like a good PSN game too (I had a lot of fun with the demo but haven't played the full version yet)

I have RR7 in my gamefly Q how is it?

pswii60, Where do you import your JP machine from HK from?

cheers

A guy off ebay sorted it for me, it is a Jap machine, Region 2 DVD, Region A Bluray.

To be honest now, the novelty has already worn off!!

Why do the games take a) so long to download and b) then have to install!! Why install? Install what?!

Also, having read the impressions of GTHD I couldn't wait to check the thing out, but dissapointmenton complete. Bar the 60fps, I don't see how it is even as impressive as PGR3? Sure the car models are impressive, but the backgrounds sure aren't.

Genji is every bit as bad as people have said, Motorstorm demo on the other hand is quite impressive.

But to be honest, I was expecting stuff that would look better than my 360 games, but after downloading Resistance, GTHD, Motorstorm, Formula One and with Genji and RR7, they just don't look as good as the likes of the Lost Planet demo (first generation), PGR3 and obviously not GoW.

I really want to make all this money I've spent feel justified!!! Sony need to show the god damn games that are coming out and blow me away because right now I'm feeling a little sick. I could have had £500 of 360 games!!! :( I am silly, I think I should have waited?

EDIT: OK I sound incredibly negative, but the PS3 has impressive me with its UI and elegance so it's not all bad, it's just that I haven't had my money justified.

I've been playing the crap out of GTHD, and I normally am not much of a fan of Racing sims. I am loving the way this one plays for whatever reason.

Cool, got the ebay link handy? Is the dude even still doing them?. Oh and from what i've heard Resistance is far and away the best game on the PS3 at the moment so that'll probably make you feel a bit better about your investment. (unless you're not into shooters).

Strange that the JP unit wont allow PAL region 2 discs to play. Hmm. Then there's the auto adjusting censorship thing that might creep into future 1SKU PS3 releases.

I think waiting for the EU launch is the best bet right now. I don't even have a HDTV and current prices for 1080p sets are still ridiculous.

Holy sh*t!

The PLAYSTATION 3 console is available for sale at the ebgames.com website. No bundles! No strings attached. Shipping in 24 hours.

It's the first time I've seen it so readily available.

Edit:
Whoa! It's even on the front page!

Strangely, my PAL PS2 plays NTSC-J dvd's...but my NTSC-J PS3 doesn't play PAL DVD's. Seriously, what kind of crap is that ?

edit: According to the Hong Kong site, this will be fixed with the March update. Awesome. :)

Play Resistance full version (first 2-3 hours of the game are very average, everything after is excellent) and Gripshift full version (stick with the single player and go for all goals) and that should justify your money spent...it did for me.

Blast Factor is pretty good too.

I agree with you on GT:HD though.

First off, it's your fault for buying/importing a JP PS3 bundle that included Genji in it. But I guess having a name: "pswii60" is an obligation to have to buy all 3 systems asap so

Second, I hope you realize that PS3 just launched (I'm being sarcastic). Trying to compare PS3's launch games/demos with X360's 2nd gen. games/demos is quite retarded, especially when you're throwing in yet another Gears comparison (like we haven't had enough of those).

Like people that have been saying over and over and over on GAF, buy Resistance, play it all the way through (a 2nd time if you liked it the 1st), and go online with it. Buy/rent some BD movies (seems like you're rich enough) and get Gripshift. Then come back and tell us if you feel like you should've spent all that money on 360 games (LMAO).

Is PS3 "worth" the money RIGHT NOW? IMO, no, not really. But it's pretty close. I bought PS3 as an early investment, knowing full well there'll be games (TONS of them) that'll make it more than "worth" the price of purchase within the next 5 years. As of now, it's "worth" about $300-400 to me, with Resistance making up a lot of that "worth."

I know this may have been answered, but can you change the colour theme manually or in fact put a picture in the background?

Also when I'm browsing the net... such as GAF on the PS3 can you make the text big enough so you can actually read the thing?:lol

Having just got mine, I'm just getting familiarised with everything. Downloaded MotorStorm straight off (didn't take too long, abought 40 mins) and while the graphics aren't mindblowing they are very impressive and the gameplay is fact and really, really fun. Can't wait for this game.

Got Resistance on order and just d/ling some other demos and stuff. Great so far.

Oh and can you buy the PS Points anywhere?

Does the PS3 output to both NTSC/PAL?

I cant find it in my manual. :/

No, but the March update will bring the ability to play PAL dvd's to region 2 consoles.
So maybe...maybe !...there will be 576i output option as well. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm considering getting a US PS3. Only got one question - is the psu in the US PS3 110~220v as the Japanese one?
yeah (got US ps3 , using a classic computer cable as i can find everywhere in fr)

I will be spending about 1157 USD on a PS3 at the EU release. :|

PlayStation 3 – 6390 -> 910USD
Game – 650 -> 93USD
BD-movie – 300 -> 43USD
PlayStation Store - 500 -> 71USD
HDMI-HDMI 2 meters – 280 -> 40USD

25% VAT + Nordisk Films (distributor of PlayStation in Scandinavia) rape price = YAY!

Three reasons why I don’t import, warranty (I get two years here), BD region - I want to be able to buy my movies locally, and 50+ PS2 titles which I’d like to play on my PS3 not to mention all my Region 2 DVDs.

Is it really confirmed that it'll cost 6390:- SEK?

Don't you use a stand alone DVD player? The only reason I have for importing is that it can play Region A Blu-ray titles. I dont want to wait for a EU release if there's a US version. :)

Pretty much confirmed, yes. :(

Discshop had the price set to 6000 for a while, then magically increased the price by 390 kr, along with everyone else. I bet they got NFs official recommended price.

Yes I have a stand alone player, its a cheap Centrum (Netonnets brand :D ), so I would perfer to just use my PS3 for DVD-playback. If they add upscaling of DVDs it would become the perfect DVD-player.

Well, I've already payed 300:- for it at EB Games so I'm almost back at 6000:-, if I do buy a PAL one. If the PS3 isn't a better DVD player than your Centrum one, Sony ****ed up more than anyone could've believed, so it will probably be a good replacement. If you aren't way too fastidious though. :)

No, not yet. It will come out soon enough, seeing as how PSP's XMB has this function, but didn't originally.

Katana_Strikes said:

Not really. The only thing you can do to help out the small fonts is to change the display output to 480p. This will enlarge everything by a lot if you have a HDTV. Only certain websites such as Resistance's official site (myresistance.net) are optimized for the PS3's browser so that you can actually read the text in HD resolution.

Hopefully Sony will revamp their crappy browser asap, because I won't be using it anymore if it continues to suck...

Katana_Strikes said:

PS3 doesn't use "points." It uses actual currency amounts. You need to purchase the amount you want to put into your "wallet" first, before you can buy things for the PS Store. You can do this by going to "Account Management." Then search around for the option to put money into your "wallet."

- Sorry guys had to find a thread that is on-topic (Jnr member can't starT threads) and no euro launch thread.
but heres an interesting post from a Eurogamer regarding sonys retailer relationship for launch plans.

EG Forum Post Here

Sony's press release on the, 'retailers are forcing the price up' has not gone down well here (Blockies and Gamestation) and from what i can tell has not gone down well at Game and HMV, why because:

1. We have been TOLD by Sony that they want a price point of 59.99 for games.

2. Blockies and Gamestation has over the last couple of months tried to get Sony to release the 20gb version on day one (hurray will be released at a TBC date)

3. The PR teams from Sony could not emphasize enough in the greatness of the high price mark up.

4. We have been advised NOT to sell the console on its own but they continually tell the press that its the retailers choice.

5.To get enough hardware we HAVE to buy in huge amounts of software, that will probably gather dust in the stocks rooms.

I am not flaming the system or pimping retail (im getting made redundant),its just that Sony that has over the last year gradually destroyed its relationship with retailers and tried to make us out to be villians in, the death of UMD movies and the not so good take up of the PSP.

I know this is 2nd hand information but it will be interesting to see the UK retailer reaction, £425 ($840 USD) for the console and £59.99 ($119 USD) a game will be a hard sell over here as the market currently stands.

So, this may have been covered before, but all the free downloadable content for Ridge Racer 7 on the JP PSN store works just fine with the US version of the game.

There are 11 decal packs that cover a number Namco games (Katamari Damacy, Taiko No Tatsujin, .hack, Ace Combat) as well as some anime series (I saw at least one Eureka Sevens decal). There's also now 11 UFRA Special Events.

It just got bumped in the "New Content" list a day or two ago, so some of these are new. I used the instructions here to make the account.

(Also, Mainichi Issyo has a little wacky Brain Training-esqe game in it with Internet Ranking. Not too hard to pick up, even if you don't understand Japanese.)

Any other good PS3 blogs other than ThreeSpeech?

I love them, but I was hoping for something as cool as GoNintendo. I'm sure I just don't know about it yet.
