Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

ouch, my eb knew exactly how many they were getting (16, 2 for employee's making it 14). Thats kinda messed up in your situation though. They should of never let out pre orders if they didnt know how many they were going to get, imo of course.
thats the same number my GS had. I heard from lots of people and I really thought they were either getting 8 or 16 and 2 could be from employees. If they didn't know at the time that sux : / In a week or so I'm going to ask my GS for an update. If they expect all their untis and are they doing a midnight launch like the 360.

sounds like a plan, let me know what they say.

It's not just that. What's to stop someone from renting, borrowing, or buying then returning games and storing them on their harddrive?
That was actually a very common practice where i live. Also, in some Games Rental places you could bring your ps2 and only pay half of the rental fee and they would save the game on your HDD, so wouldnt have to leave the store with the game disc.

Oh my.

That has nothing to do with the discussion of 3rd party wireless adapters, which would be connecting via USB to the PS3. The ethernet port can be used facilitate wireless gaming by connecting it to a wireless bridge, but that won't support any of the native PSP connectivity and will be seen by the PS3 for all intents and purposes as a simple wired connection. Typically, you would be expected to connect your ethernet port to a switch, router, PC, or directly to a cable modem for accessing the internet.

So then any wireless adapter can be used to play online? I couldn't care less about the PSP connectivity stuff.

With a Bridge yes.

Anything that connects through the USB has to actually deal with the PS3 in some fashion (with Drivers and Functionality).

As far as Online gaming goes, any old bridge (through the Ethernet port) should be fine :)

Ack no, sorry I didn't mean to imply that. A specifc type of wireless device, a wireless bridge, would be needed to be effectively wire free*. That then would connect to your wireless router or whatever type of access point you're using in your home. What I'm saying is, there's no suggestion that bog standard USB wireless adapters will work with the PS3 yet. I mean, sure they've talked about them in the past in interviews, but I don't think there was ever a suggestion that it would be a day 1 thing.

Pretend you don't see the wire going from the PS3 to the wireless bridge

:lol That's just horrible.

After hearing how bad Mario said the PSP pirating it, Sony really needs to crack down on that for the PS3.

Anybody heard about the warranty Sony will offer? I'm really hoping on a 9month to 1 year warranty so I wont have to give ebgames 60 bucks, which I could use on another game.

You cant imagine how expensive are the PSPs with the 1.5 firmware. Since casuals dont know what a downgrade is or dont understand how to do it, people rip them off selling PSPs with that firmware.

On a side note, over here there are a couple of people that actually make a living of downgrading PSPs.

:lol

I should do that, seeing as how my interest in Emulators for the PSP has kinda wanned. I have a mint condition PSP with 1.5 Firmware :> (not downgraded)

Was at EB today, and they had the retail PS3 box on display and damn, for Playstation 3 that box is a lot smaller then I thought it would be.

Are you talking about the black ones on display or the white ones?
I went by ebgames today and the black ones are not the retail boxes. The white ones seem much larger.

Yeah, those are just lil' display boxes... the real ones they suggested I bring a pick-up truck for...... :D

Here's the gameplay preview that came after the unit video on Engadget. Not quite as orgasmic :(

Still, the system is really impressive when you see the features "in the flesh". It really does seem more like a stylish computer than a games machine. I look forward to playing with one someday.

Impressions are basically what I expected. Multiplatform developed games = bleh, Motorstorm = what next gen is meant to be.

Yes, true. I do look forward to a new controller someday...but then again, I like my logitech cordless for about 50% of the games I've used it with. Nothing with racing or shooting, etc.

It probably wasn't the retail box because it's no way small. Look:

Wow I guess Sony wants to make sure everyone knows PS3 has Blu Ray. The logo alone takes up about 1/4 the box!

1/4th? :lol I see your point, but it is a little exaggerated dont ya think? :P

Anyways, if it means anything to anybody, shouldnt TW/HK be added to the thread title since they are getting a launch on the 17th as well? Then again, I guess its not that big of a deal, europeans are still left out :(.

PSM3 has some more impressions of the games they've been playing:

http://www.psm3mag.com/page/psm3?entry=ps3_what_we_ve_played
The games we have in the office so far are Ridge Racer 7, Resistance: Fall of Man, Lair, Genji: Days of the Blade and MotorStorm.

Ridge Racer is a pleasant surprise. It's slick and slippery like a greased-up seal and the bright, chunky arcade visuals look stunning in HD. When it first arrived we almost flipped a lid – the menu was full of options! Woo! But, typically, you can only select one game mode (arcade) and one track (a jungle thing with lovely misty waterfalls). But what a track it is, with a shockingly-beautiful section going through a damp cave. The reflections are so good, you can almost see your own face in the puddles.

Resistance is punishingly difficult, but we like a challenge and the balls-out action and gorgeous set-pieces make it feel like a kind of sci-fi Call of Duty. The first level takes place in York town centre, leading eventually to a leafy area of Nottingham. We’ve always wondered what alien-besieged middle England would look like, and now we know – messy, covered in rubble and dotted with explosive barrels.

Lair plays a lot like ancient fantasy shooter Panzer Dragoon, but with tilt-sensitive controls. You have to jolt the pad towards enemies to attack them which is strange, but overall we're impressed. The dragons look magnificent. But, if we’re honest, it’s more of a graphics demo than an actual game at the moment. The lightweight tutorial involves barely any play and you spend most of your time floating about admiring the lighting effects, shadows and realistic-looking rocks.

Having played the original Genji a Hell of a lot, we felt instantly at home with Genji 2. Remarkably, despite the 'giant crab' horrors of E3, it's actually really fun to play. Amazing, fluid animation and a trio of varied characters you can switch to at any point during the level. Briliantly, THAT giant crab is in the demo we have, although we couldn’t figure out how to flip it over for massive damage. Dang.

But our favourite is MotorStorm. We've had three versions of the demo and every time it gets better. The latest is absolutely mental, especially when you're crashing through squads of bikers in your buggy sending bodies flying everywhere. And the mud effects... crivens! The original demos looked great, but the latest one has added lots of nice touches including crowds of people on the tracks, more mud, more dynamic animations, better ragdoll physics and a much smoother frame rate.

:O !!!!!!! Crowds on the tracks???? Wonder if you can hit em like bowling pins :)

How these guys keep making Motorstorm look better and better is jsut amazing.

Sounds like they played the gamers day build of the game, or atleast a build past that. Everything they mentioned seemed like additions we saw over the TGS build compared to the gamers day build.

Anyways, good news to hear genji is getting praise from them. I plan on grabbing it, but I wasnt sure on getting it on day one, but hearing this makes me want it more. :)

What's special about XDR RAM

It's ****ing fast. Real ****ing fast.

Which is a good thing, because the GDDR3 is only running at 650 mhz, despite what some around here might lead you to believe.

ROFL

Only from X-bots seriously. Also, is it just me, but it seems X-bots are like the most vocal fanboys ever.

I wonder what was like during the PS2 days with the DC fanboys.

A small thing, I guess, but it seems Asustek has confirmed that they're manufacturing PS3s. They'll be the only external supplier for the rest of the year, apparently. They expect PS3 and Apple orders to compensate for a drop in motherboard shipments.

http://www.digitimes.com/mobos/a20061103A8042.html

Interesting that early word on Asustek manufacturing PS3s was correct given that so much else re. those reports was wrong (like manufacturing numbers).

My flatmate's going to Philadelphia just after Christmas. I jokingly asked her to pick me up a PS3 while she was there, she said "sure", I'm now wondering if this will be a viable option?

t looks so good, but if Sony are stopping imports of consoles, surely they'll try to cut down imports of games?

I'm not really sure, being that they purposly made games region free, I'm not too sure on how far they will go with restricting games. I think they just state they dont want consoles imported because of warranty isssues and power converting that they dont want any part of. Not sure why they would have any reason to restricting game importing.

4 minute demo on the XMB from IGN
http://media.ps3.ign.com/articles/743/743854/vids_1.html
It's like every tour of the XMB is following a friggin' script - they all hit the same options and barely explore anything. I think we've seen at least half a dozen of these tours now that do a superficial slide across the XMB, proceeds to show the video and audio output options and then culminates in showing the slideshow feature. Are there any actual tech geeks working at these sites who will just DIG IN already?

lol, yeah I would love for them to talk about the menus in high detail (they rarely do as you said), but I guess thats to time contraints or whatever their reasons may be. On the other hand, I wouldnt mind finding the small details out for myself 2 week from now just so I have atleast some surprises to look forward to. :)

Is the 60gig version just like the Wii when it comes to wifi only, or does it have an ethernet connection too?
