Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

Setup question: I have a 60" Sony XBR which is 720p/1080I and upscales everything to 1080p but doesn't accept 1080p inputs. When hooking up my system via HDMI it says that 720p is the highest resolution. If I change it manually to 1080i it works but when saving the resolution it says it is 1080i/480p. I am sure I don't want anything in 480p if I can help it, so I just left it at 720p for now.

Is there a way to set it to 1080i/720p? I think that would be the most ideal resolution, that way blueray video would play in 1080i (best setting) and games would play at 720p if 1080i was not supported.

Advice would be appreciated!!

VERY lame that i cant just take out my SONY memory card out of my SONY digital camera and look at hte pictures on my ps3, i have to format it to sonys liking and then move the pictures to the pictures folder like on a psp

worked fine with my canon camera.

OK THIS SUCKS

you can plug in a radioshack DS2 > USB adapter to the PS3 and it sees the controller, you can navigate the XMB and you think its all gravy. But when you put a PS2 game in, The DS2 is disabled and you are left with the sixaxis. NO RUMBLE FOR YOU SUCKER! :(

Soul Calibur 3 looks pretty! But it always did! It seems the PS2 bc doesn't de-interlace it right and I get some pretty nasty artifacts. My TV does it better itself from the actual PS2.

Okami long ass unskipable intro is eh.. skipping. Ok forget this crap lets get to some next gen.

OK THIS IS NICE

Blu-Ray outputs to 1080i on the old PS2 components. The image is a little soft, but I never thought of Taladega Nights as a achievement in cinematography. Looks comparable to movies I get on my HDcable network in 1080i but with no noticable compresision artifacts. :) Need a better movie and my HDMI cable stat!

Ricky Boby was in dolby D over the optical connection. I didn't see a DTS track :( I can put it on 48k PCM but that only gives me stereo over the optical. If you press the select button the PS3 will tell you the bitrate of the movie. Pretty cool. Taladega Nights ranges from 25-30 Mbps

ARG DOWNLOADING STUFF IS SOOO SLOW

I am on a 4MB down cable modem and this shit is taking forever. You can't play with anything when its downloading either. Hopefully Sony fixes this like MS did.

I haven't opened Resistance, Genji 2 is sitting there mocking me.

playstation network name: Flo_Evans

all the pictures i took last night on my sony camera, formated to put pictures into DCIM\101MSDCF do not show up. if i put them into folder PICTURE they show up

Are you hitting the triangle button to bring up the search/directory options? "View All" I think. You definitely do NOT need to have your photos in a particular directory on your memory card. Same with music and video.

(Here in Canada, they like to stick French on virtually all packaged goods, except for games, thank God. Unfortunately, the French titles totally hidefy the spines on the cases, making for a butt-ugly collection.)
T'es donc ben chialeux... Au moins t'as la console!

Alrighty I'm off to pick up my console.. looks like I'll stick with RR7 for now, and get... something else.

I just tried view all and that didnt work, I tried view info, its a 1gig sony memory stick pro, and the xmb shows it as 949mb, which windows also shows it as new. I have 120mb of pictures on the stick that come up on computer. Now I also made a PICTURE folder on this card and tried putting them on there didnt work, but when ps3 formated it and had made a picture folder that worked on my test 32mb stick. Im going to format this 1Gig one now with PS3

cool, set the xmb to 1080i motorstorm demo comes up in 480p w/ sound. change xmb to 720p it plays in 720p now w/ no sound.

edit, you have to reboot the ps3 to get sound to start playing when you change resolutions for som reason. why can't i turn off ps3 with the power button on the console? i have to old the ps logo button to shut down every time?

VICTOLY

retrieved my ps3 without incident. i suppose there was never much chance that i'd be brained in the parking lot of a busy suburban strip mall, but i'm kind of surprised that no eb managerial chicanery came between me and my sweet sweet ps3. bloody gardeners are outside making an awful racket -- i'll hook up my ps3 as soon as they're done.

I seem to have solved my problem. I went into custom and checked all 3 resolutions I could support. Now that dash defaults to 720p with movies at 1080i. I tried the motorstorm demo and it played at 720p. Hopefully I am good to go!!

The slow-mo crashes need to go from Motorstorm, at least there needs to be an option to make it so. Each crash lasts like 12 seconds.
Agreed. Burnout 3 added that as well and I hated it.

Having the option to activate it is nice, but most of the time I hate it.

Has anyone tried video voice chat on the PS3 using an Eyetoy? People have said that it works apparently... can anyone confirm this?

I feel dead today.........

Got my 60 gig.

Didn't get to sleep till 4, and had to get up at 7:30 for work which I'm at now.

Didn't even hook it up yet :( Opened the box however an gaodamn it's dead sexy !

about 29 hours total. Lots of fun. Sony took care of us. fed us every meal, and snacks. Lots of swag. Free PS3 sweatshirts. Concert was fun, but I didn't reall know the band. Got some footage of Phil Harrison and Ted Price groovin and head bobbing to the music :)

Got a ton of pics going up tonight along with some you tube videos.

anyways.....Just glad I got one.

For what it's worth the guy at the counter said resistance was selling pretty much 1:1 (duh )

HUGE BITCH. also very shiny and attractive. had no trouble with the dvi hdcp port on my tv, thankfully. updating my system software now. what should i play first? i know it shouldn't be rr6 turbo...but i think it's going to be rr6 turbo. there's just something about inaugurating a playstation with ridge.

Evo said they were reworking the crash cam so maybe they've decided to give the option. Part of their plan for Motorstorm is for it to be nonstop action which is why the race doesn't end when you crash as some wanted, but some of those crashes (especially if you fall off the edge of a cliff) takes awhile to respawn you.

PS3: Serious Business

AUAHAUAUAHAUAUA jk the gloves are just for today.

maybe.

I wouldn't even laugh at you for using those gloves because it's a fingerprint magnet i tell ya.

Picked mine up. Took a shitton of pictures (PlayStation porn). Haven't set up online yet as I have to run out of town for a bit. Real quick, I popped in a PS2 game (FFX, closest to me) and my TV (through HDMI) says the signal it's receiving is 480p. What's going on there? I thought it would just go to 480i unless my TV is doing some scaling of it's own.

Okay, finally...

Definitely add me, I need some friends :)

Mine actually had fingerprints and a few hairline scratches right when I opened it.

Somebody in the factory must have been fondling a few units.

Is it true that all the updates get installed in the flash memory instead of the onto the hdd?

I remember reading something about the PS3 having 'a large amount of flash memory.'

anyone?

Oh and can anyone tell me if there's anything preloaded on the hdd?

Can't you just plug your camera with the USB cable that came with the machine? I did plug my camera and was able to access all the pictures.

So, GAFFERS, should I open my PS3 and play Resistance and be absolutely amazed? I've already got Gears of War and the 360, and I'm starting to think about putting my PS3 on ebay.

Basically, does the system feel like a generation ahead of the 360?

No yet. I haven't played Resistance enough though.

Does anyone wanna sell me their PS3. I live in the Bay Area (Cali). Only MSRP prices please (depending on which version you have).

Here is the most boring launch story in the entire country: I read NeoGAF and saw Gamestop was doing preorders, went to preorder on my lunch break on Oct. 10th, and then today I went to pick it up on my lunch break. There was nobody in the store at all so I didn't have to wait in any line. The clerks at the store were even friendly and helpful and didn't push the warranty on me. I have to give the whole experience a 9.5, I'm docking .5 because road work made the trip 5 minutes longer than it would have taken under optimum conditions.

Haven't opened it yet.

Happy to say my bluetooth headsets Motorola HS850 & HS820 work perfectly fine. Me and my cousin (hes in another state with his ps3) were trying out the quality and its pretty good. :D

not all stores are all huge launch festivals. new york, La, and San fran are usually the places for huge launches.

Wait dont tell me you think, boring launch = Sony failed? Don't go all k otaku on us.

This was my worst experience related to video games ever.

It's depressing. I guess I won't be getting a PS3 until the next shipment in like 2007. :(

Though the PS3 doesn't read the iPod's content database like a 360, it's certainly more than able to play the scattered songs with the handy "Display All" option.

This is EXACTLY my story (except I went after work to preorder). No people, no fuss, no muss. I even sat and chilled in the store for another hour after, showed the PS3 to people, etc.

Awesomeness. :D

Motorstorm demo is awesome. Definitely play in first person, really impressive looking game.

This is my story too except I went at store open, very smooth, no problems. I was surprised I was the only one to come pick it up at store open.

Could you try it for a game like Resistance. I'd like to know for sure if bluetooth headsets work with games for voice chatting.

Just picked up mine. The Toms River EB has a PS3 and it's disfunctional - disc read error already. :(

That's not good. Hopefully this is a very minor problem.
