Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I would like to ask you how you're getting your audio, do you just use optical like everyone else on here seems to or is there a way to use regular stereo audio from the AV-out?

It kind of sucks that you can't copy saves back to your PS2 cards, but it's better than nothing I suppose. Since you have a PS2 memory card adapter, can you try plugging it in to a) your PC and b) your PS3 with Linux running (if you have Linux on it) and see what happens? If it shows up as a USB mass storage device that would be awesome.
i have my sound going out through the regular red and white cables with the composite cables that came with the system.

Basically, held power button for five seconds so it would pick proper resolution, then when it got to the menu, went to sound options and changed my sound output from my hdmi cable to my composite cables (so i have a power cable, composite cable, and hdmi cable coming out of my ps3 to my tv)

Uhh, a had a rough weekend but I finally got a chance to sit down, open the PS3 box, and hook everything up. First impressions:

(for reference, I have a 50'' 720 Samsung DLP.)

--I LOVE how quiet it is. My 360 sounds like it's about to explode when it revs up.

--That bitch is heavy. But very attractive.

--I watched some of The Brothers Grimm on Blu-ray and it looked amazing. Right after that I popped in a DVD just for comparison and it was night and day. If you are anything of a videophile, you will appreciate the difference immediately.

--Playing a little Resistance, I remembered how I have never liked the Dual Shock for FPS games. Maybe it will grow on me, I'm pretty sure Resistance will be better than Red Faction.

--It took me forever to get an online name that the system would accept. I don't know what the rules are since it just said "You can't choose that name." I eventually went with "GuileTreehorn."

--Just for comparison's sake I hooked the PS3 up to my old CRT WEGA via the composite cables. I would not spend $5-600 on a PS3 without an HDTV. I couldn't justify that at all.

So far I'm pleased. I've just scratched the surface with Resistance but it seems like a lot of fun and a nice change of pace from Gears. I'm going to rent plenty of Blu-rays but I don't think I will buy any until the whole format war becomes clearer.

Yeah, that's how I felt at first...but then by the end it's like :O!!!! You'll get used to the controls and you should really enjoy the game :) Takes a bit longer than most games to really "take off" (probably about 2-3 hours in) though.

Dont you have component?

WTF... I guess you are going to be screwed when a Chimera starts chomping you since you can't use Tilt. :lol

But seriously, if that is true it would be great for PS2 games.

yup, and it saved me $50 not having to buy another sixaxis controller :D

the controller is Logitech - Dual Action btw

Actually no, I don't have any PS component cables (I have the PS3 hooked up to my Samsung via HDMI.) My WEGA is very old, I got it in 2001 along with a PS2 the day that Gran Turisomo 3 came out. It can't even do 480p. It does have one set of component hook-ups, but I used them for my Xbox so I never got PS2 component cables.

I wish I had a set so I could use them for another comparison. It's comical that Sony only included composite cables in a $600 package. Just knowing that there are people out there playing their PS3s via composite on 21 inch tubes depresses me.

Ahhhh. I havent been on the last few days. Been busy working and playing ps3. I love it so far. Resistence online is perfect IMO. I love the regenerating health and no armor. It plays quick and with 20 a side its a blast. I bought blast factor, and I like it too. I just managed to get over 5 mil. I think I can do 10 mil but There are 2-3 cells stopping my survival chain. Who was heading the neoGaf Clan on Resistenc. I need to get signed up. Everyone add me toyou FoM list you we can get a game going.

DONT get training day on blu-ray. IQ is not that good. 10-15MBps the entire movie. crappy! :lol

I don't know if anyone already discovered this but a JPN region PS2 game will not play with even a Japanese account set up. They do have diffrent videos and demos though! :)

different region. it even says it on the box.

Quick question for anyone with final retail unit: Does the controller have SIXAXIS written on top?

Our debug controllers do not and I need to know if they kept SIXASIS branding on them (a la DUALSHOCK2 on top of a PS2 one) as seen at TGS this year.

Thanks

yes

biggest mistake of the PS3 launch-Sony not packing in a mic with the 600 unit, if MS can do it you can too...WHY sony did you do this??!!!!!your casual person buying a console will not think about picking up a mic, so now online has turned into 40 person death matches(Resistanance) with zero cooperation because no one can comunicate, or games with no voice at ALL(ridge racer, marvel, etc...)....come on Sony no excuse for this, it makes me mad because I only know how great games like Resistance could be with the right comunication....my only hope is that more people will use mics as more systems get out there....

How did you set up your Japanese user account? Do you have to use a Japanese email address?

so let me get this straight. You have to format your drive and set up another partition for this? DAMN IT I JUST SPENT 3 days downloading crap! :lol

If you already downloaded stuff from the PlayStation Store, make sure to Deactivate your account (from Account Management) before you format... apparently you are limited to 5 Activations (basically it works kinda like iTunes). I heard this off ddkawaii on the GAF IRC channel, plus I looked it up on the PS3 manual site and there is a slight mention of activation (though it doesn't say anything about the limit). It's just like deauthorising your computer on iTunes before you format it.

Why? Most people probably already have a USB or Bluetooth headset. I do. I have 3 dammit.

I basically think the PS3 will NEVER become a very online-centric machine. The system will be a single player machine, just like it's predecessors, and I think that's what fans of the system want/expect anyway.

I think quite the opposite... Sony definitely made strides with their network. Do you have a PS3? You can tell they put a lot of work and thought into the first generation of PlayStationNetwork. I expect it to get much better with the next few firmware updates... Sure PSN has a few opportunities for improvements, but I think Sony is very serious about their online plan.

Why would you say something like that? It might end up having more online users than Live in a few years.

Yes, I have a PS3 and the PSN does not feel fully integrated into the machine. Xbox 360 and Xbox Live are one and the same. If you don't have Xbox Live, you don't have an Xbox. It's that simple.

Yeah that's after years of being out there. Give PSN sometime. It'll be the same after people get use to it and Sony improves certain things to make it better.

The thing comes with an Ethernet Port, an HDD and it basically smacks you in the face with Online Functionality

These 3 things the PS2 never did. To say its not going to be very Online Centric is an odd thing to say. Its almost exactly how PC games handle it, its not as intrusive as Xbox Live!, its there if you want to utilize it.

stupid question regarding the ps-button on the sixaxis controller. does the button shines red, when you press it?

hmm I disagree...since the service is free and it includes wi fi even I might have the occassional game online...I would not have played online otherwise...I think the free factor is quite a big deal

peace

Unless I'm missing something, I've never had my SIXAXIS button light up like that.

Supposedly the controllers were already fully charged out of the box, and ready to go.

"Metal Gear Solid 3 : Subsistence :

During gameplay, with 1 PS3 user hosting a Team Deathmatch Game Type, and 5 other users as clients, the host is randomly disconnected, and is unable to reconnect"

Wow, they must have an enormous team testing this, the level of detail for these issues is incredible.

I'm not going to have a PS3 for a few months (I honestly may have a Wii before I have a PS3, just don't know yet), but it's been great fun following this topic and the PS3 Linux topic.

I STILL cannot stand the fact that Sony didn't put any USB connectors on the rear of the unit, such a stupid thing to do, IMO. Maybe I can wait out like two hardware revisions and maybe they'll add one or two back there - last thing I need when running MythTV in Linux on my PS3 is my USB capture device hanging off the front of the thing like some ugly wart.
