Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

I STILL cannot stand the fact that Sony didn't put any USB connectors on the rear of the unit, such a stupid thing to do, IMO. Maybe I can wait out like two hardware revisions and maybe they'll add one or two back there - last thing I need when running MythTV in Linux on my PS3 is my USB capture device hanging off the front of the thing like some ugly wart.
Definitely would have been nice to have a couple of USB ports on the back, but the ones on the front are so recessed that you could run a USB cord from front to back without it looking too obtrusive.

I guess I'll probably never know, since I make it a habit of charging after I'm done playing.
When the sixaxis battery gets low, the light on the backside of the controller that indicates the controller number starts flashing. The PS3 also gives you an onscreen notification. I got that last night, and continued playing for a couple of hours without plugging in the controller. So it's nice that they give you warning well in advance.

Has anyone done any extensive test of the PS3's region-free thing?

Any tried playing Japanese PS3 games on a US ps3?

NCSX tested and they all work. :D

Region-Free Confirmation
NCS was able to test the USA versions of Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Tony Hawk's Project 8 on the Japanese PS3 and we confirm that both games boot and play perfectly. Kudos to Sony for doing away with region locks. With only five Japanese PS3 games available at launch, the availability of incoming USA PS3 games in the next few days will be a welcome addition to the fledgling software library. Please note however that PS1 and PS2 games are region-coded - USA PS1 and USA PS2 games are not recognized by a Japanese PS3 and will not boot.
PS3 Madden NFL 07 (USA)
NCS confirms that Electronic Arts' Madden 07 [USA] works on the Japanese PS3. Many customers wrote in over the past few days asking about this particular game since EA's Xbox 360 games are invariably region-protected. We received Madden NFL 07 a little while ago and the game boots and plays perfectly on a Japanese PS3 console.

If you're loading Madden 07 on a fresh Japanese PS3 console, you'll be prompted to update the firmware to v1.02 from the USA disc. This appears to show that USA and Japanese consoles are identical in terms of usability and compatibility and that firmware updates are interchangeable.

Hopefully this puts to rest any concerns about PS3 game compatibility and all future USA/JPN games should be compatible with USA/JPN consoles.

it outputs ps1 and ps2 games in 480p. afaik it's not actually forcing the games to render at 480p -- it's just deinterlacing -- you can see combing artifacts. but it does a pretty nice job of it, and even rrv looks passable on my lcd.

HATE HATE HATE HATE!

Digg has a story that says the ps3 won't play BluRay movies at 720p. Anyone having this problem? It works for me-- or at least, I could have sworn it did. I'm not home to double-check.

There is a thread on this somewhere here. It plays them at 1080i even if you set the system to 720p, not a big problem for most HDTVs which can scale 1080i to 720p pretty well.

Yes, I have a PS3 and the PSN does not feel fully integrated into the machine. Xbox 360 and Xbox Live are one and the same. If you don't have Xbox Live, you don't have an Xbox. It's that simple.

+1
granted Sony's online is free, but when you use the 360, it feels fully intergrated into the OS vs Sony's that feels as if they tacked it on in the last minute. Adding friends feels like a chore to anyone thats used MS's system, But it seems that these issues can be delt with in an upgrade down the road. I will keep my fingers crossed:)

Why? Most people probably already have a USB or Bluetooth headset. I do. I have 3 dammit.

Anyone like you or me, knows online=voice chat, and they probally allready have a headset. But to your casual ps3 buyer or parent buying one for there kids only knows what comes in the box. I dunno maybe its just me but Voice is such a HUGE part of the online experience, it just makes me sad Sony over looked this part, even if they didn't pack in a mic, you would think they would at least sell a Sony Playstation branded mic seperatly?? maybe the next Socom will solve this problem:D

From my point of view it seems like Sony are combining PC online and some parts of 360 online.

Can't say they are 100% successfull yet but I am sure they are working on improvements.

So the PS3 is really quiet, but can anybody tell me why my TV speakers sound like a freaking fridge?

Has there been an explanation or solution for the buzzing sound coming from the TV when you are using your PS3?

How did you set up your Japanese user account? Do you have to use a Japanese email address?

no I just used a giberish@fake.com. It took a little trail and error to get all the fields to validate (I couldn't remember what half of them were supposed to be) but for the most part I just typed asdfks or whatever in.

They have a sweet 1080p gran turismo vid, a ridge racer demo, and a demo for some strange cat game I don't know the name of.

So no DMC4 demo? :(

The main reason I wanted a PS3 at launch was the hope that it would make PS2 games look better on an HDTV. Now that it's confirmed that it doesn't, I can wait on the PS3. I still have FFXII, Okami, Devil Summoner, and VP: Silmeria to play through, along with Persona 3 and God of War 2 next year. Hell, I haven't even finished the main quest of Oblivion yet after putting about 70 hours in.

So I read in another thread (don't remember which one), but supposedly there'll be a new shipment tomorrow (20 Nov). Can anyone confirm this? Also are any of the retailers not doing preorders or bundles? (Circuit City maybe)

Anyone having any weird issues with their Bluetooth headset?

I have a Motorola one that I've been using with my cell phone. It pairs fine with the PS3, and works great with Resistance. However, after turning off the system and turning it back on I can't get the PS3 to communicate with the headset anymore. The only fix is to re-pair it.

Edit: Also, I'm going to go troll Ebay and find a nice 10ft USB mini cable....the PS3 one is supershort.

Has anyone been able to find that widget thing that allows you to use your PS1/2 memory cards via the USB port? I've tried a couple of stores with no luck, and EB's website has nothing listed.

Whoa, whoa, whoa:

We now have Japanese MotorStorm code, and it is mighty impressive – especially when running in 1080p. Perhaps wisely, it eschews any attempt at a storyline and keeps itself simple in structural terms – all Evolution Studios’ attention has been lavished on the courses and the physics.

Ab-abbab--abbabba... is this for real? 1080p?

I don't think so. While that threespeech blog is a pseudo official outlet, its contributions come generally from guest journalists (freelance in this case). This one is off base I think.

What? Are you using some magical XBL that reads your thoughts and inputs them? Because on my X360 when I want to add someone to my friends list I have to bring up the virtual keyboard, type their nick, and send a request. On the PS3 I have to bring up the virtual keyboard, type their nick, and send a request.

If you're talking about in games, then yeah we just need to get the XMB to run while in-game when hitting the PS button and then go over to the XMB friends list and click on someone with "add to game friends list" or just "invite to game/join game".

I think he is talking about using the xboxlive.com to add friends. I read a GT thread on GAF and copy paste from one browser tab into the next. Its really awsome and I hope sony adds some kind of website where you can manage your freinds.

Okay Sony didn't really think you were going to get this detailed.

Here is a interesting story, they had a PS3 special report on the Telemundo channel (Spanish TV). My parents called me and asked "wow that PS3 looks nice are you getting it?" "Should we get it?"

Weirdest moment in my gaming life.

Apparently they liked the fact that it plays Blu-Ray and will later allow you to download music and movies. They were fascinated.
