Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

Damn it, no sound on the analog output if optical output is selected. This will make capturing my videos so much more annoying :(

Wow, downloading the motorstorm demo was surprisingly fast, like 2 minutes. Quite a change from xbox live terrible download speeds!

i am probably the only person on earth who has ps3 and cant download motorstorm because the connection @ home sucks.

people you gotta give me away i can download it to my pc and then transfer it to my ps3 :(

Woo, got mine last night and spent some time playing with it.

Thankfully, I'm having no issues with HDMI.

Played some RR7 and Resistance while also messing around with a BD movie and a couple PS2 games.

Resistance seems like a very solid game, but I need to put more time in before passing judgement. The first hour seems to lack a certain "something" that makes an FPS special. It doesn't have the personality of many others and the TimeSplitters-like cutscenes feel a tad strange. Still, the mechanics are solid and the game runs great. Visually, it looks good yet underwhelming. The outdoor areas are beautiful while most of the indoor areas feel very plain and simple in comparison. It looks much better than stuff like Call of Duty 2, but can't touch Gears of War. The sound effects are insanely good and make fantastic use of surround, but the lack of music is really disappointing (especially after Gears). I really like how they attempt to explain even the smallest of details. The method in which they introduced the recharging health system, for example, was really slick. The gameplay reminds me more of Half-Life 2 than anything (with a dash of Halo on the mechanics and AI side). Oh yes, and I'm impressed with the SIXAXIS here as the analog sticks are MILES beyond the Dual Shock 2 when it comes to this sort of gaming.

BluRay looked fantastic for me. No 1080p/24 support remains disappointing, but the 1080i image quality was truly fantastic.

I did notice that, after playing a BD movie, games will no longer properly output DD5.1 until you restart your machine. What's the deal with that? I'm using HDMI for video and optical out for audio.

Oh yes, storage media. I plugged in both an external HDD and an iPod nano. It recognized both of them, but I could not properly use them. The HDD would not allow me to browse into my music folders and would only display items that were one folder in. The iPod nano was labeled properly when plugged in, but it claimed that there was no music present. What's the deal?

I'll try out the Motor Storm demo at lunch today. I started downloading it before leaving for work so it'll be ready for later. I also have to update my PSP and try out the remote features.

Oh, and is it possible to sign up for a Japanese account in addition to a US one?

ok important question

assuming i am downloading motorstorm demo at my sucky connection. and then the connection went down for whatever reason,

will it resume the download where it left or start over ?

yes just make a new user and select japan, then fill out giberish. Go all the way untill they ask for a CC then cancel out and enjoy the wierd japanese demos and videos!

the remote features are pretty useless, but I did use it last night to rip some CDs while I was watching TV!

Is there any way to purchase content from the JP store with a US credit card?

Thankfully, I can read the language, so I shouldn't have a tough time...but I'd like to actually buy some content from the store (though I have a feeling I will not be able to).

Have you tried to use triangle button to open the full directory tree?

sadly no.. I just tried this morning. It pre-selects a japanese region for the address field so you can't use a non-japanese card :(

oh and resistance get much better. I said WOW a few times last night. The texture work is not as good as gears, but the scale of the envioronments and all the smoke and action going on is pretty impressive.

Nope, you have to start over.

Also, has anyone found the incomplete download file to delete? Like in 360 dashboard we get that incomplete/damage download that takes up space, does it do this on PS3? I've had one download error out on me and never though about it til now

I have a 22 mbits/s ADSL link, looks like it was almost maxed out. Very surprising :)
It's funny that installing the demo takes almost more time than downloading it.

ha you should of tried downloading it on launch day :lol

Got mine! ;)

I have connected to the transformer of voltage (I´m not as brave as you kikonawa). I had an odd problem with HDMI (I think it tried to put the system to 1080p, so I got a black screen). Fortunately I has the component of ps2 so I could connect it and change the config, now works perfect at 720p through HDMI in my 26" Bravia.

I am going to create the japanese and usa account now after I check Ridge Racer 7. So far the system is lovely (hell the sixaxis is really light, much more than I remember from E3).

pussy :D

Dark10x, you have to get far into Resistance before the game truly shines. It's just a combination of amazing level design and some great "fight scenes" (like gears of war almost) that make the game memorable.

For example, I will describe one without spoiling it or anything. Last night, I entered a circular room with baddies strategically placed around the room so that I couldn't just rush in. I won't tell you how I solved the problem, but I felt like an FPS pro after finishing the stage.

The sticks on the sixaxis ROCK. I love how they feel in my hands. It's my favorite controller ever...if only it had rumble.

PS3 has been great for me so far hardware wise. The image it renders is so incredibly sharp. Resistance has like 0 jaggies.

that'll work - I had this yesterday. Press triangle and choose 'show all'. Then you can browse anywhere on the USB drive for your content.

Wow, I had a very nasty crash with Resistance. Just when it started showing the insomniac logo it just crashed with the sound on a loop, I couldn't even stop the console and I had to cut the power with the button behind.
Hopefully it won't happen again :/

because i only have 512kps connection. that means if i am lucky i am getting 64kps download.

and to download the 500M motorstorm will take forever. however i work at ISP company and well.. i am basicly behind the server that provide the connection for all the users. so you have an idea how fast the internet connection is there.

but ofcourse i wont be able to get m ps3 to work -_-

mine was crashed once when i was playing online and i took the game out of the console by mistake.

i tried to go to the OS menu but it got stuck. i had to turn it off from the back.

but it never happened to me again " or lets say i never took the game out again before i am in the OS menu :D"

My downloads are taking forever. I started the F1 demo (678MB) around 9:30AM and its at 35% right now. Like the 360 I hope Sony can add background downloads and resume at some point. Other than watching Black Hawk Down last night my PS3 has been held hostage to a download screen.

dark10x..just curious..how did you get your ps3 ( iknow you get hosed) and did you end up getting a wii? and if so what do you think?

My Gamestop pre-order showed up yesterday, basically.

I did not get a Wii, however, as the demand was greater than I had expected. I'll pick one up whenever I happen to run into it. Not too terribly concerned, however, as Zelda is just as rare AND component cables are nearly impossible to get ahold of.

Yeah, that happens to everyone. It's a bit of an annoyance if you're going to be using your system to watch a lot of movies as well as playing games :\

Finally took the time to insert the Toshiba 120 GB HDD I bought to replace the 20 GB. Easy install and works like a charm. Hope they start filling the store with more demos soon. Nothing by third parties yet.

Ahh.. yeah, thought it was my receiver for some reason. Phew. Hopefully 1.20 fixes that.

Is there any way to turn on the ps3 (if you don't have a game in) with out having to go straight to the motorstorm demo?

No to the actual game but when it highlights it and it plays that annoying song.

Does anyone know if any stores are doing rain checks or preorders? I called a local store near me and the guy was trying to rip me off by charging me $800 for the next 60GB he gets.

What are you guys doing?

Disappointed in RR7's image quality. Seems as if 1080p support required the removal of anti-aliasing. The end results are a bit jaggier. 1080i mode looks sharper, though, but that requires setting modification every time. I'm quite fond of the new color palette, however. Looks quite a bit nicer than the often dull RR6. I selected an arcade race using the Mitsurugi car and the color of the red paint used was simply beautiful. Eye searingly red (in a good way). I can't believe how vibrant the game can look.

Tried Ridge Racer V as well. It's a shame 480i is not possible over HDMI with PS3 as the internal scaling can't match my television. The image quality takes quite a hit in comparison. Thankfully, I haven't purchased a US PS2 title since fall 2005 (the rest have been Japanese). I'm leaving my JP PS2 hooked up to the main system, however, so I'll be all set.

DVD playback is surprisingly solid as well. I prefer the image to that of the XBOX360 while playing DVDs (which always looks washed out in comparison).

Finally, played the Motorstorm demo. Much better than the kiosk build. Looks absolutely stunning and runs at a solid framerate. The game is an absolutely blast to boot. I was impressed by the sixaxis motion sensing as well. Coming from Excite Truck, I was kind of expecting a laggy experience filled with over correction as a result of lag...but the game actually feels very responsive.

Oh yes, any word on iPod support? Not really necessary in the face of the 360 (which I use for all music anyways), but it would be nice to have that option as the system is much quieter (making for a more pleasant listening experience).

I was wondering about this too, mine boots to blast factor on the xmb, and the music is annoying.

Yeah, this first happened to me after trying out a BlueRay movie. Popped in RR7 and had no sound. For a second there I thought my RR7 might be defective. Slight annoyance, though unless I start buying BlueRay movies, I won't be using the ps3 for dvd playback.

Hold the PS button down til you see the dash.

So I just noticed today that after you have RR7 installed to the HDD. You can play the game without the disc *after* the initial boot. You don't get the music and voice over but the game is fully playable. Kinda neat. :)

Ahh, reminds me of the original Ridge Racer. After a race was finished loading you could take out the disc (with a little trickery) and pop in a music CD and it would play it during the race.

I remember reading somewhere or hearing...that you can create a Playstation memory card on your harddrive..can you create a PS2 memory card as well?

That's awesome! I still remember playing Ridge Racer on the orginial Playstation and listening to music after the initial boot. Oh the memories.
