Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

it transfers your saves to the hd as soon as you plug in a card -- but you can't use the physical card or copy saves back to it. kinda lame. the whole 'virtual memory card' setup is irritating too, but it was probably necessary to maintain compatibility.

I did notice that, after playing a BD movie, games will no longer properly output DD5.1 until you restart your machine. What's the deal with that? I'm using HDMI for video and optical out for audio.

Ya, this is very annoying. Better get fixed in the next firmware update.

Whooo hooo!! Left home to go to come down to Florida for some R&R but decided to try my luck really quickly at the first Best Buy on my way to the condo ... BAAAM PS3's were in. Damn, best day ever!! I had pretty much given up hope getting a PS3 before the new year too ...

It's most likely not your PS3. Haven’t read all your comments but it’s probably your receiver or adapters in between usually these are the first suspects. After that try another TV. My HDTV also freezes its image something when I raise the volume from my receiver while playing my PS2. If you still here the PS3 running then I am positive it's not the PS3 and it's your setup.

BTW, try turning your TV on and off and see if the image comes back.
No it's not the TV, it's not the receiver. It's not a cable. It's the PS3.
I'l buy a new hard drive tonight and see if it changes anything. My last chance :(

20gb PS3 has no wifi. Does it mean that you can't connect your PSP to it and transfer PS1 games to play or do that remote play thing?

I wouldn't buy a hard drive. It could be a waste of money. I feel like it is the RSX, but you're the first case we've heard of with things not working as poorly as they aren't working.

Use the USB cable, It tranfers slightly faster than wifi anyway.

CAn I use my wireless wifi usb adapter with the PS3 (20gig)? I tried it...and it doesn't recognize it :(

I don't think it comes with any drivers built in... so no, not right now at least.

Well I plan on replacing the hard drive anyway so it's no loss. And considering sending the PS3 back to Japan and then to France again will cost me around 200 euros, I sure don't have much to lose in buying a 60 euros hard drive I'll end up using anyway :)

Ok, Motorstorm is awesome.

Warning, stupid story ahead:

Download the demo, start playing "looks very good and as game seems fantastic", is fast and powerful, I enjoy a lot the sense of speed and the feeling of falling down the canyon. I finish very satisfied, use the central bottom to go to the menu and I notice the words are quite big. Go to system settings, display, and change 1080i for 720p, run the demo again... *jawdrops*. I was playing in 480p (yes, sorry, I haven´t paid attention to all the PS3 talk this days, too busy) and it looked great. In 720p this looks incredible.

I don´t know what demo are people talking about, but the sonystore one is one of the most convincing demos I have seen ever.

sony really cheaped out on the memory card adaptor -- it's read-only, and it doesn't even have its own usb cord. well, i'm glad i've got it in any case. if ps3 could play legacy games from all regions, i could cut my setup down to two consoles.

Can you (or someone else) please try the memory card adapter a) in a Windows PC and b) on the PS3 in Linux?

On a Windows PC it prompts for a driver. I imagine the same would be true for Linux but I am too lazy to boot my PS3 over to test. :)

where are the intakes for the fan on the PS3? I have mine standing up to the left of my STB which exhausts some warm (not hot) air to its left - i.e toward the USB port area on the PS3. If the intake is anywhere near there I guess I should move it.

pack the customs receipt in when you send it back so if you get charged again you can show them you've already paid.

When your PS3 crashes, you mentioned that the PS button still seems to function. Is this always the case? I assume you've tried connecting the machine via composite just to make certain.

I'm sure it's the PS3, but it's always something to check (I'm sure you've tried everything already, though).

It's probably your RAM, Blim. :(

Memory defects tend to cause unpredictable crashes and display the kinds of screens you're describing. With a portion of memory isolated for XMB usage, that's likely why you can still hear the menu after a crash.

Does anyone know how a PS3 is getting recognized by a PC in your home network, or vice versa? Would it be possible to transfer data between a PC and a PS3? It'll be awesome if that's possible.

Just changed the hard drive, downloaded the motorstorm demo, played on race. Crashed when loading the next one.
I'm ****ed :(

sounds ridiculous...hmmm, what are your options now?
Sending it back to my friend who got me the ps3 in Japan, send have him send it to Sony, wait the few weeks it's said to be for a ps3 repair, send have it shipped back to me.
Shouldn't take more than 6 weeks or so, not mentioning about 200 euros for the shipping.
Joy.

If I get enough ad revenue at the end of the month I'll order another PS3, I needed a second one anyway for Snoopers. But I didn't want to buy it until a bit later :(

So we all need to click on your ads how many times in order to fund your new PS3? ;P

Is that even possible?

I got my PS3!!!! :D

Quick question: What video formats does it support? I was trying to play some MP4 files but it said it wasn't supported. Do you guys know what kind of video conversion settings I should be using?

That sucks both for you and me because i was looking forward to your vids.
I managed to record a rather video of Motorstorm before crashing. It will be online tomorrow morning.
Hopefully I'll manage to record a bit of all the games before sending back to PS3 to Japan.

I really appreciate your dedication.
