Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

Saw my first ps3 today here in Taiwan..

They are bundling the systems ufortunately..

$883.98 USD for a 60 gig PS3 plus an extra controller, Genji 2, Gundam and Riiiiiidge Racer 7

The other option was $792.53USD for a 60 gig PS3 plus Ridge Racer 7 and Genji 2

The 20 gig version is being released here in December so hopefully a price drop (to keep things in line with US retail) may happen soon after..

While Genji II is pretty poor, it's still worlds better than Gundam. And certainly Gundam ain't worth the extra USD90 or so...

I think that 360 prices on e-bay were still higher than this at the same point a year ago. Not sure though... but the falling prices are indicative of demand being satisfied.

Yeah, or people deciding to stop being a moron an waiting a couple of weeks.

ps3 outputs ps2 games in 480p whether you use hdmi or component. i think you could manually set it to output 480i over component, though.

So the "Playstation 3" font isn't silver on the 20GB PS3?

It originally wasn't when it showed up at E3 06, but by the time Tokyo rolled around, it was.

And maybe irfan is generous enough to give PS3s as Christmas presents. Or has a big house and will die if he doesn't have a PS3 on every super-huge Full HD 1080 television.

20GB models seem relatively easy to come by around here in EB/Gamestop because everyone wants the 60GB. I've been in EB/GS three times now and have seen a lucky person ask if they had any PS3s and they happened to have a couple 20GB models in the back. When I eventually buy a PS3 I'll get the 60GB though. I want less wires and I don't want to be plugging in some USB dongle to get wifi.

WARNING, be weary of pre-orderign at Toys-R-Us.... I was about to punch a teenaged clerk in the head for getting my 50 bucks deposit back

I walk in and go, I want to get my deposit refunded and cancel my PS3 order

Moron: "why would you want to do that?"

ME: "Because I found a 20GB at Micropplay and bought it and didn't want to wait 3 motnhs for TRU to get my #50 and still be forced to buy 2 games and 1 extra controller... I want my money back"

Moron: "We cant refund deposist"

ME: "WHAT!!!! gimme my money now!"

Moron: "it was exlained to you when you pre-ordered, see the fine print"

ME: "Everyone is killing themselves for PS3s, do you think I m gonna be bothered by fine print? what is this a ransom? call your manager"

I talked to the manager, he said it's okay.. and said I was the first one to want to cancel blablalala. Then when he went to get the number of my slip in the R Zone section, the teenaged moron challenged his manager about the fine print.. I hear him then told the Teenaged punk :

ME: "Shut! UP! You'r gonna do it! I don't want to hear the word NO, you're gonna do it"

Moron (stayed frozen)

Manager: "Calm down sir, please calme down, I said I was goign to allow it"

lol

I got my 50 dollars back :D

The best would be if your ID is named after that video where the old lady clocks that lady outside the courtroom.

It'd be like her spirit possessed you!

it's true, I do have a short temper... but that's because that teenaged punk ass was an absolutist insisting that there was no way for me to get my money back.

the mangager was reasonable... he knows that happy custommers return to the same store to buy products.
Alienating a custommer for life for 50 bucks is a costly 50 bucks cause that same custommer who buys a PS3 is verry likely to return for a Wii, games and accessories. Manager had good business sense to give me my money back,
but that teenaged punk clerk was ready to get a cash register smacked on his numbskull

but you have a ps3.

atleast, that's what you said...
I do, need some pics? :p

There are only a few trailers on PS Store; Underworld Evolution, Black Hawk Down, Stealth. I want to watch some Spidey 3, Ice Age and other trailers. :D

Blockbuster and Rogers, both dont carry Blu-ray titles. My only option right now is zip.ca and it'll take a week just to signup. :(

Yea.... Genji 2 really isn't that great. It looks damn good (much better looking than I thought it'd be), but two idiotic Okamoto decisions have really held it back IMO, and makes me wish I could play the first game again but with these PS3 quality visuals.

Note to Okamoto, we get it. The graphics are sweet. You don't have to keep the camera on ground level (seriously, wtf is with that?) and zoomed in crazy close to pound it into our heads! There is one scene right near the start (during a realtime cutscene) where Yoshitsune is about to fight 3 demons, and the camera cuts to a view about 30 feet high, and it looks ****ing awesome! Why the hell couldn't they use a camera view like that for all the outside bits?

And two, why in the shit did you ****ing ruin the single best mechanic of the entire series?!?!!! The Kamui didn't need to be changed at all! It was perfect! This is easily my single biggest disappointment with the game. Kamui has gone from 'OMG I'm a wicked samurai bad ass and I'm killing you all in one shot' to 'ok, this is kinda lame, we're in the middle of nowhere and I'm kinda hurting you a little bit simon says style'. **** you Okamoto, **** you.

Still, it's nice to have an action game like this at launch, and the game is still pretty fun. Music is great, voice acting is solid, and again, the visuals are pretty damn sweet. But this is a launch title tried and true, and no one, including myself, will give half a shit about it 6 months from now. Saddest part? I've kept, and will continue to keep, the first game, but I may very well sell this one when I'm done.

Hopefully Okamoto gets a chance to make a third, and combines the best of both games. But he'll probably still screw it up anyways. But it's doubtful this will sell enough to justify a third, so none of that really matters. Ah well. Another series bites the dust.

Once again, **** you for messing with my Kamui Okamoto. Bitch.

Yeah....DMC4 can't get here soon enough; even in demo form. Need some real next-gen action games :)
Part of what ticks me off is they were so close to making it a pretty great game! But those two retarded decisions hold it back so much that it's nothing more than solid at best. Okamoto needs some design help Sony. Send in a crack team of devs to simply stand behind him and say 'whoa whoa whoa don't do that, that's idiotic'.

GR's games' average review scores automatically = +20% as a result.

Or better yet, Sony should just drop Okamoto and Game Republic and go hook up with Kamiya and his buddy. They seem to actually know how to make good games. Okamoto is just living off past glory (ie creator of Street Fighter)

I finally managed to download some 1080p quicktime trailers off Apple's website. You can download it without Quicktime pro, I used this: http://fisheye.8ln.org/cgi-bin/geturl.pl

So I burned the 2GB worth of trailers on a DVDRW and the PS3 says there are "no tracks".

Is there any other way of moving the files to the PS3?

I dont have a USB HDD and I dont want to pry open the PS3 HDD just yet. :(

edit: Is there some sort of "File Manager" in XMB that I havent discovered yet?

it isn't the medium, it's the filetype. PS3 doesn't read .mov files.

You know, I was actually looking forward to Genji 2 because I really liked the original. I'm still gonna buy it tho, but I'm probably not gonna all excited about it like how I was months before the PS3 launch.

Here's hoping Unknown Realms turns out to be a good title at least.

I played Genji for free thanks to an employee friend of mine who happened to have rented the title, and it was definitely a flawed but enjoyable title. I actually enjoyed it more than Onimusha 4, but that's most likely because I played Oni4 after Genji and it felt like an extended version of the same game. :lol

But even with all the negative press and giant crabs, Genji 2 still looks like a good rental, or bargain bin purchase, simply because they really delivered with the visuals. If I can find a PS3 sometime within the year, it'll definitely be on my GameFly list.

I gotta know, is it actually worse than N3 on XBOX360? I can't believe how bad the combat was in that game. There was literally no collision detection at all, the AI was completely broken, and the levels repetitive beyond belief. It didn't even look all that great most of the time. It had a nice soundtrack, though, I can't deny that.

If Genji II is worse than that, though, then I don't know what to say...

Does Genji II at least run at 60 fps by some chance? That would rule.

IT DEFINITELY ISN'T.

30fps w/slowdown (no tearing) and motion-blur.

The core engine isn't anything like N3. It's not broken in the hit detection or anything. But rather it's just a bunch of canned combos and enemies that stand around and do nothing and then once and a while block or attack, combined with a zoomed in camera w/bad angles that is uncontrollable so you can't see enemies or even where to go next half the time.

But yeah, not as broken as N3. Not as fun either though. N3 was soooooo broken and frustrating during boss fights, but when just fighting normal guys it was pretty enjoyable with lots of attacks and nice flash. Genji II is a total bore against normal enemies and a bit annoying against bosses (mainly when they go off screen and you have to dodge their attacks).

Thanks.

I hope they keep adding atleast stuff like trailers etc. on a regular basis. The Black Hawk Down trailer sold me and I'm going to get it on Blu-ray, they should add more trailers of titles that are released or are releasing soon.

What the hell, I can't recharge the PS3 controller without turning the console off?

I guess I can recharge it by connecting it to my PC?

Man, how shitty

Just played some Okami BC (1st time) - wow, what an amazing looking game. I'm loving the BC on this thing. God of War and now, Okami, both running smooth.

God of War 2 is so getting played on my PS3.

the london levels in resistance are unbelievable. the intensity of the firefights and the detail of the surroundings are seriously up there with gears, though in an entirely different style -- i thought maybe bebpo had gotten carried away, but now i can see where he was coming from. two shooters of this caliber in the course of a month is...unprecedented.
i was just playing the part where you fight two stalkers and then one of those big spiders -- perhaps there's more, that's as far as i got -- in an open plaza, with ruined buildings to snipe from, and chimera streaming in the whole time, and intermittent mortar fire, and unbelievably detailed wreckage everywhere. the levels that preceded this were amazing, but this is on a different level -- it's the moment where resistance breaks free of its influences and does something original and brilliant. i need to get back to it now.

there are stuff i like in resistence more than GOW,

mainly the multiplayer online 20 vs 20 people.

and in single player where it gets intense.

but both are awsome games

You might be surprised to know which design decisions were Game Republic's and which were Sony's.

No excuse,Game Republic has been a disappointment so far on every platform they have worked on (PS2,360,PS3).

The best design style was seen in Wip3out imo. Very cool mix of 'beige 60's' with futuristic material.

You're thinking of Designer's Republic. Also, you're 100% right. Wip3out "wipes" (ha!) the floor with XL and 1, design wise. GoTeki FTW.
