Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

I finally got around to trying out some RR7, and I just want to say, the integration with the XMB Friend's List (I didn't even have to do anything and it automatically brought up drohne's and Jonnyram's and DC's and bebpo's etc. rankings) is awesome, and it's uber disappointing Insomniac couldn't/didn't get this into Resistance. I wonder if they could patch in something like this...

Nevertheless, I really hope this proves to be the norm rather than the exception going forward. Now let me bring up my FL for messages while in a game via the PS button Sony and PSN will be perfect!!

New OS version 1.11 Fixes
2) Some minor fix of audio issue. For example, if you using optical audio out on 1.10 firmware, after watching DVD or BR, audio out sometimes disabled. This problem was fixed.

Awesome... that problem with DD audio in games cutting off after playing a BRD/DVD movie is gone. Was one of my top issues.

Problem:

I'm trying to get my 1.11 update going, but it stops at 60% everytime with this message:

An error has occurred.
(8002F997)

anyone know what the deal is?

edit:
oh ****... I can't even sign in to the PSN until I get this update, which won't update! :( Someone help!

So we don't have to restart our systems after watching a blu-ray movie?

A few days ago, when I started up the PS3 and tried to play MotorStorm, I got that exact same error message.

I popped in Resistance, and it gave me the same error when attempting to boot up.

Strangely, everything else on the XMB worked (Internet Browser, movie clips on HD), so I restarted the console and everything was fine. Gave me a really good scare, though.

I was playing around with some PS2 BC and after loading/unloading about 4 or 5 discs, my PS3 got grumpy and started making this very loud whirring noise. It went away after a few seconds but it definitely gave me a scare. Never heard it so loud before!

You could always try downloading the update from a PC and then installing it via a USB Storage device (PS3 gives you this option, I believe).

seems like the main site only has 1.10 as their most recent update...

and the damn thing still isn't completing. One time I got it to 73%, but every other time it's right around 60%. I've restarted it, let it rest awhile, tried another log in name, basically everything.
This is shitty. I gotta find some kind of customer service number... -_-

I guess I should mention this since I've used it more than any other feature of the PS3 so far...

Reading GAF from my living room couch while listening to Gaming Podcasts over my Home Stereo is tits...

Complete and absolute tits..

i actually like this feature A LOT. it's a pain in the ass to download an MP3, throw it on a flash drive and then put that in the 360... but with a PS3 all you have to do is just click on a link in the browser and download it to the HDD.

now only if you could play games and listen to MP3s in the background... now that would rock. hopefully with a future update.

just to help w/ this paranoia i'm feeling, has anyone experienced lock ups while playing the motorstorm demo? i had to hold down the power button to turn the PS3 off, which took quite a whiile and beeped 3 times. but then i powered it on and it was okay.

I had it lock up once over at a friends house when playing on a SDTV.

How are you connecting the PS3 to the network?

Yeah, that is pretty nice. It was one of the more annoying issues and a little over a week later it's already patched.

Glad to see Sony is on the ball with their firmware updates, and it gives me high hopes that almost all the PS3 problems will be sorted out in the next few months.

you've never heard of windows media connect? streaming wins.

it seems like im the only one with this problem but web browsing on ps3 is so slow its faster to run over to my pc download it on there and stream to my 360 before the page even comes up

kaching:
I have wired ethernet connection.

I just talked to Sony support. They said it might be because the main site hasn't updated to 1.11 yet (?), but when I told him others got it to go through he seemed a bit confused. He told me to wait and try again once the Sony site updated and then use the USB transfer as a last resort.

hmm...

yea i've heard of wmc, and in fact i use it. but my computer is in my office so i'd rather just do everything from the console. i've got my ps3 connected directly to the router so i get pretty quick access to web sites via ps3 browser. though the ps3 browser is pretty clunky and slow.

Weird - the only reason I knew there was a new firmware update was because a notification popped up in the top right corner of screen while I was in the XMB around 2am EST last night. I have a US PS3 and US network account so it all seems pretty kosher.

Just rented Mission Impossible 3 on Blu-Ray. All I gotta say is :-O
Image quality is SICK!
Who did you rent from? I always used Hollywood Video, as they were close, but they don't seem to be renting HD-DVD or BD movies yet.

Will the PS3 read from external HDDs?

I upgraded my 20GB model and I'm unsure about what to do with the 20GB drive I took out. There's next to no demand for 20GB HDDs so it's virtually worthless, I'm thinking of getting an enclosure from ebay for it as they are cheap, just about £9 :)

I want to know this too. I don't feel like buying alot of the blu-ray movies that are out now, but I would like to see them :)

yep, formatted to FAT32. can you get bus powered enclosures for 2.5" drives? That'd be handy

Blast Factor does this as well. You can look at the whole-world leaderboard, or just filter it to friends.

Flo: Re: linux and downloads-- I kept waffling and finally decided to just refort and re-download. Amazingly, it kept my system settings and account info. It only lost the media and game downloads. I backed up my Resistance save so that's OK.

Had I had more time and less impatience, I would have popped the drive out and mounted on something else to see if I could save stuff off. Still worth doing, even if only to back it up from time to time. Of course, once I have Linux it will probably be easier to back up to a USB-connected drive instead.

Yep, there are ones that draw power from USB on ebay:)

My XP install is formatted to NTFS, will I be able to see a FAT32 drive in XP and transfer files to it?

My PS3 is acting funny today. I was just playing Jak II and my TV lost the signal from the PS3. I thought it might have just been the game, but it happened again after I took the game out. My XMB screen just went all red and I totally lost the signal. It kind of reminded of the times when some of my old TVs would get a screwed up signal from my mom vaccuuming in the room. I had a washer and dryer running while this happened, and the signal seemed to come back to normal after the dryer stopped. It's just strange 'cause I'm pretty positive I've had the PS3 on while both the washer and dryer were running before and I didn't have this problem. Anyone else run into this?

Why did the mods unsticky this thread, but kept the Wii thread stickied? They also stickied the Zelda thread, while leaving off the Resistance and GoW thread off this whole time. NeoGAF is sooo biased in favor of Nintendo, it's not even funny.

I sit about '10 feet away and use an SDTV so viewing the web from the PS3 looks great for me, although due to the 'zoom' certain websites are unenjoyable to read due to the constant left and right scrolling required.

I don't have any "capable" PCs in my house. They are second or third hand machines on thier last legs that happen to crash about every hour or so..

You can get Blu Ray from Netflix...and it doesnt cost anymore than Regular DVD's.

My local Hollywood Video has HD-DVD and Blu Ray movies available as well...althought the selection is shit, and they admit its a trial location. They also cost a little more there than a regular DVD to rent.

yes, it'll appear as another drive when you plug it in. Thats how I'm set up. Having a bus powered drive helps because you just need a mini usb cable on your PC and PS3 then its really portable

Heres a n00b question...

Can you play Import PS2 games on the PS3? Considering most games are region free now I was curious if it unlocked the PS2 ones?

Have you tried it again recently? Maybe the site was too busy this morning, I hope you get the problem taken care of soon.

Got got through installing my 120GB hard drive in my PS3, so far no problems!! I wonder how big of a drive this thing can take?

someone installed a 300GB harddrive with success. so i'd say as large as harddrive manufacturers can make.

sweet! i think i might just go the 200gb+ route myself, if i can score some kind of deal.

Sweet!! I think this feature should be standard for the next generation of gaming hardware, storage will no long be an issue anymore. Now DSL just need to improve bandwidth for faster downloading of content off of these virtual marketplaces!! I ain't paying anymore than 25 a month for it, so the critics saying "Get T1" can suck a fattie! :D

BTW 93 bucks for the HD at Newegg!!

I'm at Gamestop picking up a couple of things. When I get up to the counter I notice they have a 60GB PS3 box for display. Naturally, after my purchase I ask if they have any in stock. They tell me no of course... but as I'm walking about one of them mention that they have ONE 20GB model in stock. I think about it for a long time and decide If I'm going to get a PS3, it's going to be the 60GB model. Christmas is almost here, it will be almost impossible to find until next year... Did I do the right thing? :(

If wi-fi isn't important to you should got the 20 gig, because it sems installing bigger drives is pretty much cake.
