Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

It's not funny. The ****ing machine can render graphics-intensive next-gen games like Motorstorm without breaking a sweat but it can't register text! Is this something that'll need 'fixing' or should I just wait for a firmware patch?

I agree, it most definitely isn't funny. But it is one of many quirks plaguing the PS3 at the moment. Not everyone suffers this freezes just like not everyone suffers slow downloads or web browsing. Just have to hope problems like this are software related and are fixable via firmware updates.

The thing moving slow is what I'm talking about.

It took a good 45 minutes to download the F1 demo. Navigating the thing sucks, too.

45 mins to dl a 500+ meg demo is not exactly terrible though it takes me around 20.

As far as navigating, with the analog stick it is rather easy and fast to me.
What is your ISP speed? Are you using wifi?

This is an open question to anyone who has some online PS3 titles other than Resistance or Ridge Racer 7. How do the Friend's Lists work in those games? Are they more like RR7, and completely integrated with the XMB, or are they seperate and stand alone like Resistance? Somewhere inbetween?

I'm particularly interested in at least one title each from these publishers at launch:

EA - Madden, Need for Speed, Tiger Woods
Activision - Call of Duty 3, Marvel
2K - NBA 2K7, NHL 2K7
Sony - NBA 07
SOE - Untold Legends

I have no idea what my ISP speed is, but I'm using a wired connection. I know on XBox Live it only takes around 20 minutes to download just about any demo.

It might be something with my connection, but I don't know why my connection would only be crappy on the PS3 and not the PC or the 360. It takes a good minute or so for the pages of the store to load after I click on a link.

OMG!!!! O_O

I swear to god it takes my PS store 5 seconds to load after I click on a link. I don't know what your problem may be.

The PS3 search is looking pretty grim out there. I'm checking with stores and other than the first week after launch (where I'm guessing the shipment just didn't make it in time), stores are getting like 1 or 2 units a week. Japan numbers are @ ~150k after 3 weeks

I'd estimate at retailer PS3 shipments worldwide at best to be 500k or so and I'm supposed to believe that Sony can hit another 1.5M units in the next month? I'll be remarkably surprised if they can hit 1.4-1.5M shipped with 1M making it to shelves between the US and Japan by the end of the year. And Ninendo to be say 2M units higher at the absolute least, or say 3-3.5 times the worldwide sellthrough of the PS3.

Thursday is going to be murder here with November NPD.

I think Sony will hit about 1 million worldwide by Dec 31st 2006. What will matter is how quickly they can speed up production in 2007.

And bring down the price of the PS3 in 2007 too. A $349 360 and a $199 Wii vs. a $500/$600 PS3 doesn't look good on paper or in reality. :(

duckroll just discovered VF5 = Feb 8th in Japan. US version should be around the same time or if not REGION-FREE ftw.

A lot sooner than I had expected and oh crap is it going to be awesome :)

I'm just going to go ahead and wait until March to pick up a PS3.

I've only encountered one in an actual store and I missed my chance at that one. Sometimes tells me they will be even more rare this month... :(

I'm not really too sure how soon MS will cut the price of the 360... right now they're in a good niche technically between the PS3 and Wii... They're gonna start making money on it, they're pushing boxes, I wouldn't expect them to cut it anytime soon, unless Sony makes a cut, Ninty, or both...

If their sales faulter though when the Wii and PS3 are more readily available on store shelves, maybe then as well...

European launch in March depends on them improving production significantly. Annoyingly the biggest threat for Sony at the moment is their own inability to produce units. It really is their war to lose, and they seem to be doing their damndest to try.

i opened my ps3 and it said for me to connect the usb cable to the controller.

I downloaded some stuff and i was wondering can i unplug the usb cable now and use it wirelessly?

thanks

I didnt know where else to post this...but I cannot ****ing believe the PS3 doesnt have playlist support for the music tab!!

This is one of my (and many others) biggest problems with the PSP and they are making the same goddam mistake again! I simply cannot believe that noone at Sony has the brains to decide to add some kind of playlist support for the PS3 or the PSP...and none of that grouping into folder shit either..im talking about real, honest to god playlist support.

This is not a troll, but a comparison....the goddam 360 has playlist support if you put the mp3's on the hard drive right? WTF!!!!

How can they even begin to think of the PS3 as a fully featured multimedia device if they cannot even get something this simple right....goddamit this is so irritating.

Smart man. Since i've finished Resitance, and after looking at the upcoming release list, i've realized my PS3 is gonna sit unused for loooong while. Here's to hoping for some nice demos I guess :(.

If he was a smart man he'd pick it up in February for VF5 though ;P

But until then...yeah, the only thing I'll be using my PS3 for is Resistance 2nd play w/goodies, RR7 online, Blu-ray movies, and whatever apps they can come up with in Linux.

I'm not very fond of 3D fighters, but I'll be sure to check it out.

I'm not waiting for a price drop or anything... just for the day when I can just walk into Bestbuy during my leisure time and just pick it up along with whatever essentials I need (warranty, extra controller, etc).

Awful picture.

BTW, I believe you could have saved yourself a BUNDLE in listing fees by leaving the starting bid at $1.00. It'll likely get to $1,000+ regardless, so you haven't really done yourself any favor there.

If you want to GUARANTEE that the auction goes for a certain amount (or doesn't go at all), then use the Reserve Price to list the minimum you'd be willing to let it go for. It's cheaper for you, and just as safe.

Motorstorm anyone (unless you didn't like the demo)?

Latest bundle here in Taiwan is the 20 gig PS3 plus 3 games and an extra 6 axis controller for $822 USD

Not bad. Im tempted to grab one now...

I can now confirm that my new PS3 is working great, not a single problem (besides the usual bluetooth stuff) during the week-end :)
I didn't have time to install YDL yet, don't know when I'll be able to do that with the busy days coming (finishing Resistance + videos of lots of 360 stuff + Blue Dragon) but I'm still planning on writing a big article on what we can do with that.
Ho and I will fix playsyde so that it works with the ps3 browser, and for all my home made videos I'll have a HD mp4 version available.

I was watching PS3 bids on ebay last night. The 60 gigs weren't going for over $900

You're a workaholic, Blim, but it's much appreciated.

OK, the Bluetooth controller narcolepsy is officially annoying.

It wasn't a big deal in Resistance, but it hit me several times with Ridge Racer. I plugged in to play that. Very irritating.

I hope they can fix this one.

Ignatz, are you using the wireless router by any chance? Someone said that by changing the wifi channel they elimited the Bluetooth issue.

I'm serious here. What is a playlist support?

Where you can take your song collection and decide what order you want the songs to play in..from the entire collection. It is like picking songs in order from a jukebox...and the PS3 and PSP not having it is the ****=dumbest thing in the entire world...

If I remember right, PSP supports playlists by folder. You throw the songs and a playlist in a folder, then when you're scrolling through the fold listing, the .M3U shows up. Somewhat oddly though, I don't think it supports playlists for .MP3s in the root folder.

ack some family members without power were over to keep warm and wanted to check out the PS3... of course I had the worst bluetooth lockups and controller drops when trying to show the system off. :lol

Bluetooth is POS. I have no idea why they used it for wireless.

I am starting to get worried. On saturday, i went to the agency i use to get my imported stuff. They dont actually sell anything, they just give you a us adress you can use to buy things, then the goods will be delivered to my country, and then sent to me, etc. This is our normal way of importing goods.

Anyway, on saturday i went there to pay for my Zelda preorder and was asking about how much they would charge for delivering a ps3, the girl said that she wasnt sure of how much i should pay for customs but looks like it could be a hefty price -_-

Blimblim, how much did you pay for customs when you bought your ps3?

Cuz if i have to pay more than 200, i better pay a flight and go and buy it myself -_-

I'd like to know when the PS Store is going to start offering up demos for 3rd party games. Fight Night and Full Auto are supposed to be out this week, both of which offered demos for the previous 360 versions. Since it's early days on the PS3 and there's an almost complete lack of 3rd party content at the store, I'm assuming it's Sony that hasn't put all the pieces in place yet for 3rd parties.

Assuming you're in Europe, I think it will be 3.5% duty plus your country's VAT rate plus your courier's handling fee. So for example for the UK:

PS3 $599.00
Duty @ 3.5% $20.97
VAT @ 17.5% $108.49
Handling fee $26.60 (varies depending on courier and exchange rate)

Total $755.06 = £383.28 at current exchange rate of $1.97/£

Haha, even with the customs anal rapage it's still a steal compared to the UK price.
