Official US/JP PLAYSTATION 3 Launch Thread

No, not yet.

Think of the PS3 this way: Anything you can think of to improve or update the PS3 is possible with a firmware update, but it isn't happening right now. Sony's saying the big update is coming in March when the European launch happens. Motherfuc*ers.

Is there any word on if the March update has realtime Dolby/DTS encoding during movie playback? If not, The Sopranos is only going to play in Pro-Logic, since word has it they are only including PCM surround (weird-assed choice, go with the TrueHD).

Um. If the discs do not include the soundtrack encoded on the disc, no firmware upgrade will magically add it to your disc.

Sopranos Blu-Ray only has Loseless PCM surround. The HD-DVD version has Dolby Plus.

If your receiver can't handle loseless PCM, then Blu-Ray may not be the format for you until you upgrade as most BRD releases are like that.

Actually, most Blu-Ray releases are NOT like that.

Second of all, the goddamned XBox 1 was powerful enough to encode DD 5.1 in realtime, so it sure as hell isn't expecting much for the PS3 to do the same. We already know that it has tons of overhead during BD playback, as they have demonstrated smooth 2X playback with no dropped frames. They could easily encode DD/DTS in realtime from lossless PCM.

Needing to have an HDMI receiver just to hear 'The Sopranos' in surround is ignorant. I guess I should buy the HD-DVD version.

Xbox1 had dedicated hardware to encode DD. 360 doesn't though, so it really shouldn't be a problem for PS3.

Yep!

FYI the Toshiba A1 converts PCM surround to high-bitrate (1509 kb/s) DTS over TOSLINK, in realtime.

Is Heavenly Sword still being released in March? It's all gone surprisingly quiet regarding this title :(

No announced delay, last I hear it's still on for spring. Eye of judgement is too but I havent heard much from it either. Sony marketing is strange. Time for being quiet was ok before the ps3 released, but now that it's out they should be releasing screenshots and video every month.

Seriously.

PS2 games look like crap when upscaled to 480p, I rather just keep it on 480i. When is Sony going to fix this.

Also the internet browser is pointless without a zoom function, I can't read anything.

Man, maybe on your TV they do, cause they look AMAZING on mine.

Agreed about the web browser.

You'll have to create a virtual memory card.

Not soon enough, still no release date I dont think..

Yes.

with the supplied mini usb cable to one of the 4 ports in the front or, your computer usb will charge it also.

The remote has been out for a good week now.

Don't know about you, but FF12 look like shit on Samsung 60" at 1080i. Haven't tried any other PS2 games after that experience.

The post I responded to dealt directly with 480p titles. FF12 is not a 480p title, hence the reason for its shittiness. Looks like shit on my TV as well. The only 480i title that look good are Jak 2 and 3 (have no idea why). But yeah, knitoe, try any 480p title (God of War particularly) - they look very good.

Also: I think I figured out why I'm losing video from my PS3 and 360; I believe it's my receiver. I've had it for a while, now, too. I hope I can have it replaced. Apparently Integra offers a 3-year warranty on their A/V products.

Mckmass - my CRT is 34" - text on the web browser is way too small.

I watched the Blu Ray disc included in the Famitsu PS3 Blu-ray EX magazine, and I would like to post some hot hd screencaps.

The thing is, right now I'm not able to take screen shots. I'm playing the disc on my VAIO laptop, using Intervideo WinDVD for BD. So far I tried PrintScreen, alt + PrintScreen, Paint Shop Pro 11, and SnagIt, to no avail. I've been searching and so far everything has failed.

If you know how to take screen captures of Blu ray movies from a PC, please share.

I know this must be possible, as shown in those Ghost In the Shell 2: Innocence screencaps
http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=3928

Thanks

God of War looks like shit via HDMI on a LCD TV. Do you have to manually set it as 480p in the options somewhere or something?

Backwards compatability on PS3 is shit in general. Not just God of War but pretty much all games look crappy, regardless of setup

Yes, 480p has to be manually set in all PS2 games that support it, as far as I've seen.

In 480p PS2 games look as good on PS3 as they did on PS2.

Thanks

Maybe because DVD ROM drives cannot read a Blu-Ray disc?

i thought the printscrn button on the keyboard captured screens....then just paste when you open paint.

The notion of copying HD movies that way was spread online a while ago - perhaps they disabled it somehow??

They disabled the PrintScreen key when a blu-ray is playing. With SnagIt, I get the screenshot, but the movie is all black.

Most video playback software renders the video onto an overlay. Print Screen or any other standard screen cap software won't work in this instance. Depending on the software, you might have options to not render the video stream as an overlay although I do not think this available in WinDVD.

Alternatively, older versions of WinDVD has a screencap function. Does the HD version still possess the functionality?

Finally, since Vista does not render it's videos onto overlays (because it interferes with 3D rendering functions), theoretically you might be able to use the Print Screen function on it...

.k

Thanks for the reply.

I know what you mean about WinDVD, but of course, those ******* removed it from the BluRay version...

Ah well, I'll try my best with my camera for the time being. The solution to this problem will present itself eventually.

Man I went to target to pick up MGS:PO and they had 5 there. I really wanted to get one but it is the worst timing right after the holiday and I am low on money and going on a trip next week with the little I have left. Damnit never thought I would be so pissed because I found some.

MGS:PO is an awesoem games, especially online.

i think the answer is no but is there any international warranty?

Nope, the warranty is only valid in the country it's sold in.
I'm in the UK with a JPN machine, so it's (more than) a little worrying if the machine goes tits up. I doubt SCEE would touch it.

So, I just got a 20 from the Amazon thing, and I gotta know, what's the best HDD? 80-120GB sounds about right, but bang-for-your-buck and performance wise, are there any that stand out?

Bigger cache = better. Size is up to your choosing I suppose.

JB1981 said:
Yup. Just like every other 480p game on the PS2.
I've missed out on a huge chunk of the PS2's lifespan.

And to the guy asking about the PSU in the US PS3s, it's universal too. I plugged it straight into a 240v wall socket with a standard IEC lead (PC PSU lead, UK).

Edit, damn. Progressive + 16:9 mode is like night and day over HDMI. Doesn't quite fill my screen, about a 20 pixel gap around all edges but I can sort that in my TV opions. Cheers.

PS2 and GC have a universal underscan problem; unless you can adjust overscan/underscan manually on your TV, expect to see this on every widescreen game you try.

Only look at size and cache size...ignore speed, higher doesn't mean faster, since the PS3 won't always write faster, plus it means more heat, which is a bad thing.
