Chipmunks still on the chart make me want to /self.

Yes, because children's movies making money is the end of the world. The target demo of the chipmunks is not us or critics.

Also, Cameron is god.

Jeez this movie is unstoppable. Are there places where this has yet to release? I really can not believe its still making this kind of money.:lol :lol :lol

It's also nice to see The princess and the frog go up this week.

Way to go Avatar. Can Princess hit 100 in theaters? Only half of what crappy Chipmunks have done so far. Much anger..

The tragedy is that it almost doubles Princess and the Frog.

Princess and the Frog was a children's movie no. It just didn't suck. So why do parents take their demon spawn to an annoying movie is beyond me.

Peff beat me.

I believe it comes out in China in a few weeks.

Don't bet against Cameron.

*cue Cameron as Jesus pics.

Who betted against Cameron apart from Phoenix? I can't remember analysts or insiders predicting that it would flop.

As an aside, hopefully The Princess and the Frog would meet its budget domestically.

I think Avatar's out in China tomorrow.

I fucking hate this excuse. Seriously. Kids aren't retards. There really is such thing as a BAD children's movie. This is one of them.

Congrats to Avatar. Doubt it'll catch Titanic worldwide but still .. just wow.

Good to see Up in the Air making bank.

One is a fair tale, the other is a goofy comedy. Princess and the Frog also appeals to girls only... Chipmunks will get all of them. Trust me, you liked all kinds of shitty movies when you were a kid too.

I can attest that the kids I know were going apeshit over the Alvin sequel when they saw ads for it.

Parents don't take kids to movies the parents think will be good, they take them to movies the kids want to see.

Kids like stupid silly shit. This fits that bill perfectly. Parents aren't out going "man, I want to see that chipmunks movie. Kids are asking to go, and they like it... otherwise the sequel would have bombed.

THE FUN FACTS:

  • Avatar made an estimated $68.3 million at the domestic BO in it’s third weekend, crushing the previous record of $45 million set by Spider-Man 3.
  • James Cameron will hold the #1 and #2 spots at the worldwide box office by the end of the week, making a grand total of $3 billion on two films.
  • irfan did some compiling in terms of how long it took the top 5 grossers to hit the $1 billion mark. This is what he found:

    1. Titanic took 11 weeks (final: $1.84 billion)
    2. LOTR: Return of the King took 10 weeks (final: $1.12 billion)
    3. Pirates of the Caribean: Dead Man’s Chest took 10 weeks (final: $1.07 billion)
    4. Avatar took 17 days (current total: $1.02 billion)

    5. The Dark Knight only hit it with the small Janurary re-release, making just a hair over $1 billion.
  • The #1 2009 domestic grosser (so far) Transformers Revenge of the Fallen took 114 days to hit $402 million. Avatar will surpass that by next weekend (21 days).

random observation: I just watched Kindergarten Cop, and Jason Reitman is actually in the movie as the kid who was making out during the school fire near the end of the movie

Alvin appeals to boys and girls, Princess appeals to only girls.

His father directed it.

Not really, Christmas and New Years is over and everyone quite literally saw the movie. Expect the numbers to plummet to respectable levels. 30-40 million next weekend I predict.

This is a 40% drop jett which is I felt was fair considering the circumstances next weekend.

Avatar will _not_ drop over 50% next weekend.

Also, school starts up again in the next few days for most.

You've lost it.

Avatar will NOT drop 1.6%, 9.7%, and then +50%. It won't happen.

It's not just the holidays that are keeping Avatar up.

Look at Sherlock Holmes this weekend. Now remember that Sherlock Holmes opened at #1 Christmas day, and is tracking to be a huge hit with over $200m.

And it's weekend take was almost half of Avatar's.

The change in calendar will not mean Avatar suddenly starts playing by the rules. It will drop a bit more than it has been, especially during the week, but nowhere near "normal" levels.

Well I hope everyone's theater isn't skipping day showings and just doing two evening shows starting on the 4th like mine are.

Princess and the Frog is 'dated' looking, to kids. (my 3 y/o nephew thinks he saw it on DVD, already. Swears he did, because it LOOKS old. :lol) If it had been done in CGI it'd prob. be the biggest animated flick in ages...

Disney could (prob. will, eventually) remake ALL of their 'classic' animated films in CGI and make massive BANK.

They were talking about weekend drops, not weekday.

doubtful. This shit is bananas. EVERYONE I know wants to see it if only to say that they've seen it. :lol

it's like an event.

It felt more like Princess and the Frog was appealing to the nostalgic adults who remember the 90's animated films...At least that is what I got from their advertisement campaign. While Alvin clearly went for children.

If they made the advertisements a bit more for children. It probably would have done better.
