HW was significantly less engaging when I played it, and thus I only did so for like literally a minute or two, as Assault Heroes and Mutant Storm were calling to me. I would love to be surprised by it though. It seemed heavily focued on multiplayer, which also led my attention to drift, as that wasn't really the best environment to try that sort of thing out.

Wow, sorry to hear that about HW. I'm a sucker for shmups, so it was on my list. Yoohoo, Treasure...Sin & Punishmnet, Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun may have a next-gen home...but I digress. I can't wait to try some co-op Assault Heroes. Hit me up fellas, I'm down for this or Small Arms anytime. ;)

A little off the topic, but when you see how some of these games can fit into that 50meg limit you have to be impressed, I hope assault heroes is a long (ish) game and not completeable in 10 minutes start to end.

Where did you hear it's out tomorrow? God dammit, my knee needs to get better. I might practice stairs tonight a week early. :angryface

Like I said. There's every possibility it could be great. I devoted like zero time to it.

Roboblitz is OK, it's big selling point is that it was created via the Unreal 3.0 engine. It's a good platformer, but nothing I could live without. The developers did a fantastic job and it's very impressive that a game this graphically savy could fit in such a small package.

Small Arms has a pretty steep learning curve, and is very unforgiving. Once you get used to keeping track of your character, and the nuances of the levels, it's a blast. Ranked games are only 2 minutes and reallyl don't give you a taste of satisfying combat. I would like to find some buddies to set up some player matches with and just go at it...16Bit style. while far form perfect Gastronaut did an excellent job of delivering a fun multiplayer title. Great party game.

Finally got to watch Blim's video (accidentally cancelled the last download).

S O L D

I just realized that shooters where the enemies blink white to show they are taking damage have a special place in my heart. Probably pure nostalgia, but I actually got excited when I saw that. It just screams "old-school" in ways that make me a bit giddy. It's also made me realize how much I miss great shoot'em ups.

That's EXACTLY what I thought when I played it.

Assault Heroes IGN Review!
8.7 niccce!!

Nice! I'd never even heard of this game until today. WTF is up with Microsoft's marketing? It didn't even have a page on xbox.com earlier today.

If your ride does explode, you have to duke it out on foot for about 20 seconds until your transportation respawns. If you can live that long, you don't lose a life. Usually, however, you don't live that long.
Sounds like a great system. Your co-op buddy will have to protect you until your vehicle respawns. Kind of a down-but-not-out system that a recent 360 game uses. I like it.

I'm definately doing stairs tomorrow, **** the pain.

I played trough the first 2 zones today in coop, and its pretty nice, and kind of hard. The environnements for zone 1 and zone 2 were really different, which is nice, and there are some hidden bunkers in the level where you have to get out of you vehicule and clear them on foot.

If 1 of the 2 players dies in these bunkers, you get out of it and cant do it anymore. I dont know whats on the other end of these bunkers cause the 2 times i killed my mate by shooting explisive barrels.

The boss are pretty cool to, and the weapon leveling system is hot. Flamethrower lvl 3 = blue flames and guided bullets coming out of your truck.

I too would like to know how many zones there is, if theres a decent number of them, ill probably buy the game.

actually you still can use a gun and grenades when you are waiting ofr your vehicle to respawn so its pretty cool.

Sounds awesome. The game has the look of games like Heavy Barrel, Mercs and Ikari Warriors mixed with Raiden. Add in the hidden stuff, a good challenge level and the co-op mechanics and this sounds hot hot hot. Definately what XBLA needs right now.

I understand that, I just assumed that when on foot you wouldn't be as powerful as in a vehicle, so the other guy might need to pick up the slack.

1 thing I disliked, is at moments, the framerate seems to suffer a lot.

I dont know if it was really a framerate issue, or if it was because the difference of speed between being in a vehicle and being on foot....

also, you can get out of your vehicle any time by pressing B, to get bonusses and stuff.

These were the games that I loved, growing up as a child, and Live Arcade needs more games like these! Hopefully, this game delivers. I'm very picky when it comes to shooters. Maybe, with the advent of XNA, our fellow gaffers can make games like those, ala Raiden, Time Soldiers, Ikari Warriors, etc.

Make it happen fellow gaffers! I will be more than happy to part with my $!

Going to have to disagreeeee. . I found it to be even more ridiculously easy on co-op than it already was on single-player.

Hmm, that's not what I wanted to hear out of a shooter. :( If you bump up the difficulty to the hardest level, is the game a lot harder or still on the easy side?

And from what I can tell from the IGN videos, the game doesn't look too intense.

IGN said there were three difficulty settings; maybe you played on different settings? That, or you're just awesome. :p

Well ive only played on coop, on medium difficulty, and we died twice...

I can see that game being very hard on the last levels of the hardest difficulty.

I never noticed a difference. The last time I played I decidedly stood out of tank mode, seeing if that would make it remotely difficult. Instead, I just got sick of the inability to do damage outside of tank mode.

I was able to move around pretty good tonight, so I'm hopefull that I can get upstairs to download this one tomorrow. I'm really, really looking forward to it. Someone start up a thread for impressions when it's out.

Immediate demo impressions:

There is a lot of loving detail, such as crashed ships and palm trees that sway and blow with explosions and tanks crawling over them.

The basic gameplay seems very solid, with, OMFG, non-f**ked up or overly complex controls, and it really does feel TONS like the modern Jackal Konami never made. The first boss was graphically impressive, and if there is real variety in the later stages, it's pretty amazing how much they crammed into "only" 50 megs.

Downside so far:

It runs at 30fps and there's a fairly large amount of frame dropping in single player. The game runs at a slow but intense pace, think Raiden slowed down to R-Type speed but with tons of crap going on like Raiden. So the frame dropping doesn't seem horrible, but it makes the tech quality feel a little sloppy and rushed.

I'm on the fence; any impressions about how good the later stages get? How many stages are there?

Hey, man. Let us help you out there.

Sooooo good. Beat the demo and immediately bought it. Love it to death.

Also for this brief moment I am #1 on the worldwide

Strange that Alkaline Black has bought more XBLA titles than anyone I know.

Yeah. Sort of done buying just about anything from XBLA now. I celebrated this decision last week when I bought all three accessory packs for Viva Pinata instead of Roboblitz.

Fair enough. The demos are usually enough apart from the best titles (Cloning Clyde, Marble blast, GeoWars ). I`m optomistic about AH, since I generally suck donkey balls at arcadey type games.

Not a bad game at all, jumps from 60 to 30fps depending on the camera angle and such. Is it me or do the vehicles wheels not rotate foward and backward making me feel like its just sliding along the sand...

I died in the demo but it did feel easy for the most part.

I'm playing the game on hard and Jesus Christ that spider boss took forever to kill. Pretty nice game. The top down perspective reminds me of the mode 7 stages from Contra 3,other elements of the game remind me of Expendable on DreamCast. I wish the action on screen were a little larger but it gets the job done.

:D

So are you Gari Kudasai, and if so, why did you quit our co-op game?
And why did you die so much?

Man, I'm just got into work almost an hour late because I had to play some Assault Heroes. NO way in hell I was justgoing to download it and just leave for work. To hell with a demo, I knew I was buying this over a month ago.

This game ROCKS!! I think it's one of the best products to hit XBLA to date. I love this game the control is damn near perfect. I lve the fact that if you get hit and lose your vehicle, if you can hold out for a bit of time, youe vehicle will re-spawn and you don't loose a life or your power-ups! This is just AWESOME, adds a degree of pressure to the game when you're in a tght spot (i.e. in a boss battle you loose your vehicle, you're white knucklling the control to hang on to the shread of hope that you may get your rig back and be in a better position). After playing so many retro titles, I was actuallyl surprised how long the levels were. After I beat the spider boss I was sure I was going to power down the console and head off to work, then I was like..."What?! There's more to this level?!" getting out of the vehicle to grab stuff, and the "on-foot" bunker missions are very cool. I was going to try the co-op, but I running late. I got a couple of friend's request for some co-op action..but I knew better. :P But this game will be on my mind all friggin day, I know the online co-op is just going to be sweet indeed. Two Acheivments before breakfast is a good way to start off the work day. :lol

Maybe I was focused on my combat to much, but I didn't notice any frame rate issues as someone stated above (not anymore that has been seen from any shooters in the past arcade and home). The visuals are fantastic, and the sound is crisp, i thought for sure those cannon shots were going to wake my wife this morning. If you're a twitch gamer and a 'shmup' fan like myself, don't sleep on Assault Arms, you'll hate yourself if you do.

Besides..all XBLA demos are free...what's the risk?!

*sniff* I made you a thread. :(

It's fun so far, but man did they pick the most boring music ever. That, plus the slow scrolling and not getting your bombs/grenades back after dying doesn't put it in the same league as Geometry Wars imo.

Seeing how no one is replying in the Assault Heroes topic:

MicVlaD said:
I've been doubting to get it, but how easy is the finished version anyway? I've already played these games:

- Geometry Wars
- Smash TV
- Mutant Storm: Reloaded

Is it safe to say that all of them are much, much more difficult than Assault Heroes? If so, then I probably won't buy it, even if it does have online co-op.

Why do you not have "Our Last Stand" by Daedalus running off Custom Soundtracks? It's unquestionably perfect.
