It's working for some, but not for all. I started a thread at xbox.com about it, and there are lots of people having a problem. It has been recognized as a legit bug in the game and is going to be addressed in a patch.

basically, the game gets stuck at the "waiting" screen before it starts.

edit: single player and offline coop still work great (and are both well worth it)

I had the exact same problem, but found that inviting someone while they were in their dashboard instead of in-game seemed to work.

They need some Space Giraffe or new Mutant Storm to get things going again. XBLA is ****ing dead at this point.

Maybe if Assault Heroes hadn't come out last week, your reductive description might hold more merit. Wounded in the leg? Perhaps. But there's life in this old girl yet.

I read the last couple pages backwards...pretty funny. :lol

I see all this disgust...go back a page...

...see interesting screens...see a lot of excitement and hope :lol

...scroll down to see what the dealbreaker was...

..."Crystal Quest" :lol

XBLA was a great idea, and I have some games I absolutely LOVE bought from there...but lately it's been so-so, and the blame could be spread around.

3rd parties:
Arcade developers like Midway have classics such as NBA Jam, 2 on 2 Open Ice, Rampart, SF Rush 2049...most of these already emulated on consoles with their Midway Arcade Treasures series...all they need is integration of Live play...and it doesn't seem like they are even in the pipeline.

Same goes for SEGA. And there are of course many more.

Microsoft:
From what we hear on the web MS takes their time releasing this stuff...what's the holdup? Secondly, as someone mentioned they keep titles under wraps and then surprise us with them, so there is no anticipation building up for them. DOOM was a nice surprise, but we were warned by a few days I think. MK was leaked and thus tipped off gamers. I think release dates could help a lot. If someone said, "February 13th, Sonic the Hedgehog from SEGA", I'd mark that off my calender. Or if I wasn't interested, at least see value and a future in XBLA. Right now things are in the dark...

Gamers?:
Maybe there isn't enough interest in this? Maybe the numbers seen by developers aren't impressive? ATM there are 3 million Live subscribers...how many XBLA games sold over 100,000? Maybe we aren't adopting this in the numbers MS was hoping for?

Personally, I'm extremely excited for XNA and I'm actually having fun programming (something I usually hate) with C# express and the XNA setup, which makes things real simple. I can see a lot of great games coming from this. Hopefully a lot of high res 2D goodness!

It took me a little while to figure out what the hell to do, but Novadrome wasn't nearly as bad as you guys made it sound. I beat the demo, it was "okay". My only real gripe is that the game is listed as "Racing" when it clearly belongs in "Action Arcade".

Assault Heroes will be remembered as-- well, actually it won't be remembered at all. It's a great concept with good controls, but the pacing and difficulty aren't there. Ultimately.... it's boring! I would rather be playing any of the litany of old arcade games that Assault Heroes borrows from. I had high hopes because it looked so cool, but it was like asking for Transformers for Christmas, and your parents get you Go-Bots.

By my calculation, at least 11 with at least 16 making over US$500k in revenues.

The numbers stack up to make it a worthwhile proposition. If you have the right game.

still waiting for word on CV:SOTN...

and what in the hell is taking those lumines expansions sets so long?

Downloaded the demo of Assault Heroes the other day and it's a blast. Gonna probably buy it with the 800 points I have left over. It definitely feels like a spiritual sequel to Jackal, the criminally underrated NES game. My only complaint is, like others have said, it scrolls much too slow.

Wait until you get the last stage. Oh, you'll be loving that scrolling.

"I HATE YOU!!"

Why aren't we at least seeing more traditional, tried and true, games on Live? They can't be that hard to develop, since you pretty much already have the rules set and all. Some new card game, chess, checkers.
Or games like Tetris as I've mentioned before. Or Bust-a-Move. Or Bomberman (the classic kind, not the emo version :P). We got Xbox Live reps here right? Maybe they could shed some light on this. I'm really itching for some multiplayer Bust-a-Move via Live, that would frickin' awesome.

And Yeah, Novastorm sucks.

I told you guys it was either Novadrome or Sonic the Hedgehog, but I was off by a couple of weeks.

Maybe Sonic next week...

I doubt we'll see Sonic for a while. Since it was announced back at E3 we've heard nothing and seen nothing. OK, so they surprised us with Doom, but Sonic I'm sure would have been talked about or hyped.

I wonder if MS will release anything next Wednesday? Hopefully they'll surprise us though, but I have a feeling it will be Worms rather than Sonic.

Am I the only one who thinks Rare should put their handheld team on XBLA projects? Like say a 2D Conker or Banjo game that plays similar to Donkey Kong Country? Or maybe a new Battletoads beat'em up?

It'd be nice to see Sega do the same. Make new 2D games of Vectorman, Shinobi, Sonic, Golden Axe, etc. Konami could develop a new Contra. Maybe new Street Fighter and Mega Man titles from Capcom. Old classic games are nice, but why not develop new 2D games? Stuff you can't get anywhere else, and haven't played before.

If developers got serious about XBLA it could really take off. The only question is, would the effort be worth the return, and that I'm not too sure about.

/End of rant.

I really want Sonic the Hedgehog, like right now. Maybe Sega is deciding which achievements to put in the game? There are so many I could think of right off the top of my head, and there's a strict limit for XBLA games.

If they put in a time attack achievement for Green Hill Zone 1, I'd be all over that like a loopy canard.

I just got the Genesis collection so getting Sonic on XBLA holds no interest for me. Heres hoping they keep the original content coming, though hopefully something better then Novadrome.

They should just port Blood + Duke Nukem 3D and get it over with. The only original content that hasnt sucked, up until now, is Geometry Wars.

Did anyone have the Radar Rat Race catridge-based game for the Commodore 64? Didn't realise it was an IDENTICAL clone of this game but with rats in it - even the track layout etc is the same. Was it the norm to do that in those days? I think it was even published by Commodore.

EDIT:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_Rat_Race

Radar Rat Race was a 1981 game for the Commodore VIC-20, later converted to the Commodore 64. It was among 30 game titles marketed by Commodore on cartridges, and sold for about $30. It cashed in on the Pac Man craze and was a clone of the Namco arcade game Rally-X
.

Seriously the game is more than just a clone. The only difference is rats instead of cars and stars instead of smoke. I'm sure they couldn't get away with this these days, although Simpsons Hit and Run was sure close.

So I guess that wraps it up for MS's bullshit claim about the huge number of XBLA games they had lined up for the rest of 2006. :lol

Underpromising and overdelivering yet again! Good job!

Jesus christ, theres got to be an internal untold story as to why XBLA has been mired in shit for months. 1 game a week, and most of the time its trash. What the hell is going on? Where is Castlevania:SOTN? Sonic 'Hi-Speed' (am hoping for it be filled with extras and maybe even reworked a bit)? Castle Crashers? Geometry Wars 2? Countless arcade brawlers that would be PERFECT for live co-op (Turtles, X-Men, Alien vs Predator etc)?

I just don't understand how such a great feature can be constantly squandered, it boggles my mind.

Well, if XBLA really WAS a shock to MS, unfortunately they don't have their own set of PSP games to port over quickly. Games generally take 12+ months to develop, so I would think that we'd start seeing the bigger-budget better games in 2007. Well, that's what I would hope, but Greg Canessa might be living in his own world.

EDIT: But, I hope for MS' sake, they are looking outside the box. Gripshift is a great idea for the PS3. The nearest thing to that on XBLA is Marble Blast. I just hope MS start speaking to third-party developers behind the better-selling niche GBA/DS/PSP games and get their own set of top-end stuff. I'd love a bit of Mercury Meltdown.

C:SOTN: Wasn't that Q1 2007 the whole time?
Castle Crashers: See Above
GW2: PGR4
Countless Arcade Brawlers That Would Be PERFECT: Alright, now you're just being silly. None of those were announced as being under development.

Is it really so mindboggling to imagine that dealing with such a vast and complicated library of new (and all of them are new in some way or another, there are no straight ports in XBLA) games that have to be prepped for every available market on the planet is not easy nor is it a smooth process?

They really should give a Willy Wonka style tour of the Arcade division for all the people complaining so they can see that either people are working as hard as they can to get games out or just sitting around eating peanut butter sandwiches and reading these threads.

only game I feel that is worth 800ms points right now is DooM, and that came out a while back (still have not brought it), I'm more tempted to buy it every week due to the naff crud coming out.

Last weeks game was alright but not brilliant and robo blitz seems nice but I don't have 1200 to spare on a puzzle game I would probably beat in one sitting.

Hate to be the one to break the news to you, but you are never going to see those games again unless you fire up Mame or have a really kick ass arcade near you.

Licensing means those game will never come to live, period.

Where's Alien Hominid? I thought that was supposed to be before the end of 06 and Castle Crashers in early 07?

Tell me about it. I've been jonesing for both of those for a long time now. I knew CC wasn't going to be out until 2007, but I was hoping that they were at least going to be able to get AH out this year. I guess not. :/

Okay, but Capcom's Knights of the Round could certainly make it to XBLA.

Especially if you have a friend to play co-op with, it's well worth the 10 bucks.

It's the last game I bought actually, and the last one before that was Geometry Wars...

When the hell is Cyberball coming out for Live Arcade.. it was announced way back when UMK3 was but no sign.

If anyone played this in the arcades, you'd know it's one of the most underrated head-to-head and co-op games of all time.

What bugs me is the TONS of fairly recent arcade games that could be on live, but aren't.

Sega:
Why isn't Sega Rally or Daytona USA on Live? Maybe a little Virtual On?

Midway:
You pretty much are the only guys out there with a recognizable football game besides Tecmo that doesn't need an NFL license. Where's Cyberball 2072? Hydro Thunder? Arctic Thunder? SF Rush 2049? Hell, as much as the game is dated now, I'm sure there's SOMEONE who'd like to play Primal Rage...

Namco:
Obviously you don't want to go against your precious Ridge Racer and Tekken franchises. But what about Cyber Sled 2? Tokyo Wars? Mr. Driller? Point Blank?

SNK/Playmore:
Shame on you. We won't even talk about Metal Slug or King of Fighters. Samurai Shodown? Shock Troopers? Windjammers? Fatal Fury? Why not make a nice hi-resolution version of Card Fighters?

There's so many arcade games out there, that would be perfect. They're DESIGNED to have leaderboards. Netcode and achievements are all that would need to be implemented.

This isn't even taking into account of developers coming up with new content like Geometry Wars and Marble Blast. This slim pickings thing is BS.

A few days ago someone made a topic asking what we thought the game press should be covering, but isn't.

I want to change my answer.

Come on Microsoft... let's start this year off right! Something spectaular for Wednesday would be a great gesture. Better yet, let's have our first multi-game release day!

2006 was a mediocre year for XBLA with a few worthy standouts (Marble Madness, Cloning Clyde, SFII), but I expect MS will have to step up to the plate now that all 3 next gen consoles are offering some competition.

I turned the demo download on and got to play New Rally-X and Novadrome. I actually thought Rally was pretty fun; the gameplay held up better to me than most of the other arcade oldies. My daughter loved it as well. Maybe not enough to buy it unless she keeps playing it, but it's still fun. Which is not to say that I'd rather something more interesting comes out.

I also played the demo of Novadrome. Thought it was okay until the car flipped over. I lay there upside down for a minute, until the rest of the guys blew me up. I couldn't figure out how to flip over. Based on five minute impressions, Rally-X >>>> Novadrome, as far as fun goes.

One of the buttons flips you back over. I think it might be L3 or R3. Not that it makes the game that much more fun. Why Stainless didn't just do a port or remake of Carmageddon 2...
