Mr. Driller Online information

http://www.xblah.net/2008/03/mr-driller-online-direct-screens.html

After the Famitsu announcement a day or so ago, the first direct feed screens and first details have emerged from Watch-impress.

Included in the details are the different modes available:

Single Player
- Standard Driller: The regular single player mode.
- Quest Driller: Every 100 metres drilled will add a new "Quest" for the player to finish, which must be completed by the next 100m drop.
Multiplayer modes
- Solo Battle: 4 players compete for the highest score.
- Tag Battle: A 2 Vs. 2 mode where players play cooperatively against another team. This mode is brand new to Mr. Driller games.

The first trailer has also made it online

Currently the game looks.. okay. It's Mr. Driller, no doubt about that, but the graphics themselves are VERY blurry from being made large through a softening filter - not sharp at all, looks quite poor. Hell I'd even go for the pixelated look, but surely Namco have these very simple characters somewhere in a Flash or Photoshop file somewhere - there really isn't an excuse for it.

You can see all the new images here. Also, strangely, the Xbox.com Japanese page has also popped up at the same time! You can check that out here with more images.

"Rocketmen: It Came From Uranus"

Say this aloud for good laughs.

After the first game, that title could be closer to the truth than Capcom think.

Capcom reveals Bionic Commando Rearmed Pricing

Capcom reveals price for Bionic Commando

bioniccommando Back in February Capcom gave the gaming community the opportunity to have their say in the final price for the remake of Bionic Commando. Ben Judd put together a little poll with some price choices and let the community vote on the most appropriate price for the game. Obviously, the voice of the community plays a key role in the success of a game. Price it too high and you're at risk of making decent sales. At the end of the day you want to make the best title and sell it at the most affordable price.

The hot price these days on the Xbox Live Arcade seems to be $10, and not surprisingly that's how much Bionic Commando: Rearmed is going to cost you. The majority of the votes were for the $10 price point, but there actually was support for the game selling at $15 and higher. When all was said and done, Capcom decided that $10 for the XBLA and PSN versions would be satisfactory for them. Below is the official posting from Ben Judd on the pricing for Bionic Commando:

We first asked the question to our community about how much they would pay for Bionic Commando Rearmed here on the Bionic Commando community site.

Some people said it was stupid. Human nature dictates that people will choose the cheaper of two prices. Some people said we hated money. Well, while the results may suggest that $10 is the sweet spot for most people (in the US the final tally was 83% in favor of the $10 price point and 17% in favor of the $15 price point), there is another side of the story which wasn’t represented by the poll results – and that is the huge number of user comments that we received, where a majority were suggesting they would pay $15 or even $20 for the game.

When I first posed the question it wasn’t about whether people wanted something to be cheaper or more expensive. That answer is obvious. It was about whether people would be willing to pay more to support high-quality 2D gaming. 2D games are a bigger risk (no, they are not necessarily cheap to make. BCR has plenty of 3D models and uses much of the same tech and physics as the 3D version) because they are a harder sell. However, when we started the community site it was all about hearing from Bionic Commando fans and connecting with our community. The poll says $10 so that’s what it will be. Since the title will have to do quite well at that price point to break even (no, I’m not going to give you a specific number), I guess we have to roll the dice and see where they land.

Oh well, I’m tired of meta-emulated crap. These old 2D titles are where games were born. With some solid adjustments, new modes, and updated graphics they can still provide a hell of a lot of fun. Just updating the graphics isn’t paying them enough respect.

Besides, I’d rather fail having created the best game I could, even if the end result doesn’t justify 2D games like this in the future. So $10 it is for the XBLA and PSN versions (we haven’t decided on the PC version because it may have some additional content that can be downloaded later).

Let’s ride this train to the end of the line. Thanks for your feedback and your support.

Just finished off Rocketmen. I am amazed by how simply everything about it sucks ass. Every single thing.

Which makes the backstory behind the game even more confusing; I just don't understand what's going on in the credits. Why are there like a billion little studios involved? A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. Games (ugh) seems to be the main devs, but the credits also mention Eyerisk Studios, Flashman Studios, Arcana Studio, dSonic Inc, Dancing Robots, Jet Black Games and WizKids. Plus Capcom, of course.

What's going on there? Why were almost a dozen studios involved in this game, and how did it still end up a horrid mess, if they had insane amounts of help? I mean...one of those studios (Arcana) is for the script writing alone. And this game had the unfunniest, lamest script ever. Why would you hire someone to write that garbage? I thought it was just thrown together by one of the programmers or something.

I'm confused.

I gotta be honest, by the time the 4th or so dragged out credits logo appeared at the start of the demo I was JUST about to shut it off just based on that. I thought this kind of crap died in the 16 bit era? It is one of my biggest gaming pet peeves.

Besides as you pointed out and what I've always surmised: Too many publishers/developers in the pot equals crappy product. Case in point: Rocketmen.

Select quotes from Plunder previews:

PLUNDER PREVIEWS

IGN

"Plunder is anything but dull. Trying to capture the final town needed for a victory while enemy forces move in from the north is nerve-wracking, sinking the enemy to defend your port is gratifying, and the game just looks great with it's bright color and stylized visuals."

1UP.com

"It's not often that we see a casual downloadable game like this made by people who know how to make and balance complicated multiplayer games, and that, more than anything else, makes us excited to see more of the game."

Destructoid

"I think the biggest selling point to Plunder will easily be the multiplayer and custom map creation here."

GamersInfo

"If it sounds like my writer's coffers floweth over with praise, it is because Plunder is simply that fun."

Gamespot

"Plunder can be described as a casual real-time strategy game with streamlined gameplay that places less emphasis on micromanaging and more on teamwork."

*******

"I liked my brief time with Plunder. It's a simple game, but I think that longer play with seven other people will reveal deeper strategies and techniques ... I'm looking forward to seeing how Plunder's maps, strategies, and game modes evolve after its release."

Kotaku

"I sat down and played a very quick, four person vs team game which was really a lot of fun. The controls were easy to pick up and the gameplay was engaging and easy to pick up."

TeamXBox

"Plunder certainly does have a free-for-all feel to it, with a fast pace that’ll often leave you gasping."

I have a feeling the Edge thing will be a hefty article on Ikaruga and the Shooter sub-culture that sprang up around that time.

C'MON IKARUGA.

Last weeks releases were bloody rotten :(

all of a sudden? weird...

hopefully we will see it at E3.

Well, it is more like they ran through the initial run of titles and haven't filled in the gaps (save for Crack Down and ESWAT, maybe) since then.

SEGA's suddenly started not doing their SEGA Classic Collection stuff. Frankly I'm hoping that it'll come as Sonic 3 & Knuckles with extra features.
Yeah I dunno why they stopped putting that stuff out. I can only assume those 5 games last year were just a testbed, and they were going to see how well they sold before doing any more. There's loads more classic SEGA games I'd like to see on XBLA, so I hope they haven't decided to call it a day.

Sonic sold well though, so I don't see why they wouldn't do more, but then this is SEGA we're talking about!

Arcade or Megadrive version? :o :o :o :o

Good question, I saw the Genesis version listed, but since it is XBLA, I would say that the arcade version is not outside the realm of possibility.

Either would be good. It's also a crime that Revenge of Shinobi is not planned for update/emulated release.

I don't care which, the game was freaking badassery personified.

I believe it would have been due to Microsoft not allowing anymore of them for the time being, it'd end up having SEGA spamming all sorts of half-arsed games on the service. Everything has to be approved by Microsoft. Microsoft probably has them under some sort of "This many classics a year" deal.

As for ESWAT - It was only mentioned in one magazine, and was around the time SEGA released it and Crack Down on the Virtual Console - I think they just got it mixed up, since there has been no mention of it since, no ESRB ratings, nothing.

I'm hoping all this Capcom stuff could have made them realise that they could have put those Sonic Rivals guys from Backbone on some XBLA project LIKE Sonic, Shinobi, something rather than 2 half baked PSP titles that sold nil.

I dunno whether there is any real truth to that. After all, look at the shit coming from Atari. At least SEGA's classic games are good and have merit to be on the service. Ah well, we'll see.

Team Xbox Interview: Christian Svensson on the digital initiative of Capcom.

Excellent interview. Bionic Commando is just over the size limit, while SFIIHD is far beyond it? Sounds like it's this years Castlevania.

Of the 3 major releases - Bionic, Commando 3 and SFIIHD, C3 would have probably sold the least of them - stacking on the SFIIHD BETA makes it a surefire hit, and in the end allows him to go "Y'See! Y'SEE CAPCOM JAPAN! People want this shit! Megaman, Ghost's N Goblins, Gargoyles Quest, Final Fight, Power Stone, Strider, and Viewtiful Joe for all!"

Technically Atari's only released 4 as well - Asteroids Collection, Centipede Collection, Missile Command, and Tempest. SEGA released 5 - Golden Axe, Sonic, Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, and Ecco.

Atari's only got two more in the current pipeline - Battlezone and Warlords. Atari has very little in terms of actual remake material which isn't from the 2600 era. A fully realised sequel to Yar's Revenge, Breakout, or Lunar Lander might work a treat though. Hopefully Phil Harrison pulls up the quality meter a bit.
