Denis Bourdain from Load Inc (developer of Mad Tracks and upcoming Things on Wheels) comments on XBLA delistings:

I think de-listing is some what natural (in small proportions), and I'm right in the eye of the cyclone having a sub 65% game since more than 6 months on the service.

What I'm more concerned about are criterias.

Metacritics lists all kind of mainstream gaming site, lots of hard core sites, 'serious' people reviewing 'serious' games most of the time. Are they the best suited to judge an XBLA title sold 4.99 or 9.99? --> not a popularity criteria!

Six months or more: here at Load Inc. we play ReVolt a couple of times a week - this game is ten years old!! --> not a popularity criteria!

Regarding conversion rate, I'm totaly with Microsoft. I trust in try before you buy, if people don't buy after the trial version, you didn't reach far enough - again, not saying it make a game bad, but that might be a popularity criteria.

I will keep defending my title and the 72.000 plus people that bought it since May 30th last year.

Happy B-Day Mad Tracks.
DenisDenis.

• Contains 45 levels of action packed puzzle racing games.
• Single player, Multiplayer (up to four), and Leadership boards to view highest available scores among other competitive players.
• Five differently shaped and colored meteors
• Collect stars to double your chance of winning or losing.
• Meemos and butterflies placed throughout levels as obstacles for a challenging yet entertaining game play experience
• Entertaining short story segments

From watching the trailer for Roogoo, all I was able to gather was that it is a fancy version of those games you give to toddlers with matching shapes with the right hole to put them through. Why is this "yay" again? It doesn't even look like a clever puzzle game and Live is already chocked full of good, smart puzzle games (Puzzle Fighter, Lumines, Poker Smash etc.).

IGN says Aces of the Galaxy will be out next week.

I hope they don't de-list 800 point games without discounting it down to 400 points first. Why de-list in the first place, I don't know.

Oh. Yes. Please.

Ever since I fell in love with PMCE - and especially since I've seen what's been done with Space Invaders Extreme - I've been hoping Namco might have some kind of slick Galaga update up its sleeve. Hope this is it....

Am I the only one more excited about Space Invaders Get Even than Extreme?

Oh man, a Pac-man CE quality remake of Galaga would blow my mind.

Bought the Sudoku game. It's pretty good. Every time I got annoyed by something, such as the music, I would go into options and there would be an option to adjust whatever I wanted. Only 'problem' I see with the game is the puzzles are really hard. Or maybe I am just very rusty at solving Sudoku puzzles, but I think it's the former.

Yea, I recall encountering the same problem playing the PC version.

I guess we are officially back to two games per week for the time being, this week we got Warlords and Buku Sudoku and next week we are getting Aces to the Galaxy and Roogoo.

I kinda want to get it but 800 pts...I dont know...and next week's game looks cool. I mind as well should bite since I just got 6400 MS points for only $20 (thank you Target and the $10 off coupon)...but I did try the trial and I had trouble with the medium difficulty puzzle...and I consider myself pretty good at Sudoku. So I dont think it's just you

The hope I'm holding for this is the reason why I won't be getting the DS version for a while. I think it would be worth the wait and probably cheaper if were on XBLA.

Surely, Soulcalibur fans are excited by the new Soulcalibur IV promised for later this year. However, Namco had a surprise up its sleeve with the recent announcement that it’d be releasing an HD version of the game that started it all to Xbox Live Arcade around the same time. With thanks to Namco Bandai, we’re able to bring you an early look at the game you’ll be seeing on XBLA this summer, which is expected to cost about 800 Microsoft Points (or around $10).

First off, Namco claims to have boosted the graphics up to 1080p, and we can’t dispute that from what we’ve seen. It’s not as intricate as a full-priced game, but there’s a lot of detail in the arenas and with the fighters.

The game also features a number of gameplay modes that will keep things fresh. Even the Practice Mode, which enables you to master each of the 19 playable characters, has plenty of options only a Pause Button away, such a full display of the character’s command/combo list (and there are many, with each character having dozens that are broken down into horizontal attacks, vertical attacks, kicks, “run” attacks, throws and special attacks); a toggle for whether your opponent fights back in the match or not; and even a selection that does a recording of a segment of your battle, so you can play it back and assess the results.

As for the competitive modes, Soulcalibur gives you more a couple of choices. The Arcade Mode takes your selected character through a progression of the other fighters, one at a time. Time Attack pits you against the other fighter and times you how long it takes you to clear them out. Survival tests your skills by how long you can stay alive and many wins you can chain together before being defeated; you have a single health bar, but gain some back with each victory. Extra Survival is a variation of Survival that features one-hit kills, so you have to be the first to strike a blow in each match. Team Battle groups from one to eight of your favorite combatants against a like-numbered group of other fighters to see which team can take out the other one first. And Vs. Battle enables you to go head-to-head with someone else on the same console for bragging rights.

The action, if you aren’t already familiar, is fierce, with the characters’ weapons adding extra reach across the arena. With dozens of moves, a small dance floor on which to boogie and long reach, battles are intense and competitive, with good balance between all of the combatants.

Achievements

Apprentice—Play 3 characters in any mode. (5 points)

Warrior—Complete Arcade Mode. (10 points)

Zen Warrior—Win a match with a perfect. (10 points)

Noble Soul—Beat the game in Ultra Hard without losing a round. (25 points)

Conqueror—Beat 25 opponents in Extra Survival Mode. (25 points)

Guardian—Perform 25 consecutive bursts with Freestyle set to Guard Impact in Practice Mode. (15 points)

After having bought the full version of Sudoku, I was able to beat two normal length puzzles tonight. I had to use the pencil markings to keep notes. Without that, it's very difficult to beat a normal difficulty 9x9 puzzle. I think after playing this game, my Sudoku skills will be even greater if/when I decide to play Sudoku elsewhere.

Did you read the delisting comment made by Load Inc yet?

Yeah I have. He doesn't seem particularly worried. Much like 3D Ultra Mini Golf or Brain Challenge I believe Mad Tracks tended to sell well consistently for a long time, and assumedly continues to sell well. Brain Challenge has a Metacritic rating of 54 - most of us don't care, but it's been in the top 10 since the release. It's not for us!

Much like Buku Sudoku isn't. One of the 3 people I was able to get a response by was from them (and will pop up sometime this week). My consern is that despite is actually being a pretty damn good Sudoku game with a lot of features, both IGN and Team Xbox have given is 6/10 - with the main reason largely being "Dude, it's Sudoku!".

THAT is my main criticism of the whole argument.

I think that has been a huge criticism for a lot of people, we know those rating scores are bollocks for judging XBLA games.

I think most XBLA games are rated fairly, but board games and the like are going to take a hit because they're obviously targeting a much more casual audience, and some reviewers just can adjust their thinking. Look how well N+ did in reviews, having those visuals on the same console of Gears of War. I think the flipside of the system, the conversion rate, will help these casual games to the point their ratings won't matter.

Though if something like Mad Tracks is immune to de-listing, then the whole idea is pointless anyway.

Right, Inspired by the NEO GAF Mid-Year Report Card thread, I have decided to do a special feature of my own, I am going to weigh in and give out a grade for the big five Downloadable Content Platforms, it will take a bit of time to complete, but in the meantime I do have a rough-cut of the XBLA segment, feedback would be appreciated.
One last note, since the iorum is about gaming, I am sticking to the gaming side of things.

Xbox Live Arcade

My, my, my, my, what a turbulent couple of months it has been for the XBLA. Indeed, the bad news has been flowing like rancid wine for a few months now, size cap issues, royalty rate cuts, the recent delisting snafu. Indeed the XBLA has seen some major failings due to the absolutely asinine policy choices of those in charge of the service, yet, in spite this maelstrom of stupidity the XBLA, one thing has thus far remained unaffected and that is top-rate content for the service. Oh sure, it has gotten a fair bit of shovelware (Discs of Tron, Wits and Wagers, Bliss Island, Battlezone, et al) but overall we have been graced with the likes of Rez HD, Ikaruga, N+, Poker Smash, ect, ect. Moreover, we got a nice preview of the XNA Initiative, the size cap issue has actually been resolved, not as much as Neo GAF would like, but all things considered, we are lucky to get even a size increase. Kudos are also appended to the XBLA for still having good worldwide distribution system, one submission and a publisher is good to go around the world, slight marks off for treating the Asian sector (Korea, Japan) like second-class areas though. Excellent third party support at this point in time with new games being announced or uncovered almost daily. Bonus marks for finally expanding first party development beyond Carbonated Games and expanding the Arcade Hits programs, yet more could be done in this area (more price drops, week-long price drop/free game promotions). DLC Expansion Packs have been steady but honestly unremarkable. Finally, Microsoft has pledge to fix the broken DRM issue. but that is supposed to occur later this month if it happens at all, so tha has to be left out of the grading issue one way or the other.

Final mid-term grade: B-

Things are getting interesting :)

Edit: And nice to see you having more opinion in your post Shard, we need more of it :)

Indeed, I still have sections to do on the Playstation Network/Virtual Console and WiiWare/Steam/and Gametap sections to do, since it is an op-ed piece, I can take my time on it. Plus, I can get feedback from the various audiences.

Microsoft: Live Arcade cull will force developers to focus on quality

Microsoft has said that the decision to delist under performing Xbox Live Arcade titles will force developers to focus on better quality games.

Titles which have a Metacritic rating of less than 65 per cent, have been on the service for at least six months and have a trial conversion rate of less than 6 per cent are due for the chop from the download service this autumn.

Director of product management, Aaron Greenberg, has also told GamesIndustry.biz that he believes developers will still be willing to experiment with niche or new concepts, rather than adopting safe gameplay in order to receive a high score and stay on the service.

"I really don't think we will see that at all, in fact many unique style games typically get stronger reviews because they stand out from the pack," he said.

"If anything you will see developers take more time, make use of the new additional storage space and focus on game quality now more than ever to ensure the title is well received."

Xbox Live Arcade has been criticised in the past for a glut of poor titles, making it difficult for users to find quality games in a crowded digital market. As well as forcing developers to tighten quality control, Microsoft is also planning its own in-house Live Arcade team to lead the way with downloadable content.

"What we are saying is that our focus with Xbox Live Arcade is going to be on quality over quantity," offered Greenberg.

"We are also thinking about the future of the service and want to ensure that new Xbox 360 owners that come into XBLA for the first time have a great experience. We believe that with this focus, the increased size limits and the investment in our first-party studio you will see XBLA games continue to improve throughout the year."

Although Microsoft is still quiet on the amount of titles to be delisted in 2008, Greenberg said the cull will not begin until after the summer, with users and developers receiving at least three months notice.

He also stated that this new policy will not have any affects on the proposed Community Games project due to launch later this year, which will showcase games created using Microsoft's XNA tools.

"This program only applies to Xbox Live Arcade, Community Games created with XNA do not go through the same submission and certification process and since they are developed by community members are less likely to have review scores assigned to them like Xbox Live Arcade titles," clarified Greenberg.

Aces of the Galaxy & RooGoo this week:

Experience the thrilling retro arcade space shooter “Aces of the Galaxy,” and enjoy a new type of action-puzzler, “Roogoo,” both launching on Xbox LIVE® Arcade this Wednesday 4th June, 2008 at 09.00.

Enjoy the frantic action of “Aces of the Galaxy,” an old fashioned arcade adrenaline-pumping shoot-em-up that allows players to save the Universe from the wicked Skurgian Empire. Players annihilate enemy ships with an impressive arsenal of upgradeable weapons including high-powered missile launchers, devastating torpedoes and the relentless chain gun. Battle intense waves of enemy Skurgians against a breathtaking outer space backdrop, and choose to fight alone or join up with a friend at home or via Xbox LIVE.

“Roogoo” takes puzzles to a whole new level. Help the Roogoo defeat their enemies, the evil Meemoo, in “Roogoo,” a new and innovative action based-puzzler with addictive gameplay. Players line up multiple platforms on different levels to allow shaped blocks to pass through and once enough stack up, that particular shape closes off. A simple premise becomes more complicated as Meemoos begin to obstruct players' paths and butterflies attempt to steal blocks away. Players must swivel, roll and boost their way through 45 puzzle-filled levels alone or with up to four friends in cooperative party mode play. For those with a more competitive spirit, “Roogoo” offers a two-player multiplayer mode over Xbox LIVE where players battle to solve the same puzzle and can build up attacks to defeat their competitors.

All I know is, if Mr. Driller gets culled, I'm gonna be pissed and go on a rampage. That game has been so unfairly treated, considering MS is supposed to have a fucking certification process in place.
