I don't really understand what Capcom is going for with Megaman acheivements. If these games were released as 360 launch titles they' be lumped in with the "we-don't-know-how-to-make-good-achievments-yet" crowd along with other stupid hard achievements. Now however it's considered kitch. I don't get it...

Really? It's pretty clear to me they're going for the old-school-purist crowd, the same people who complain that games are too easy.

Those acheivements are clearly meant to be "stretch" objectives for MM fans.

Doritos and Microsoft Announce 'Avatar Crash Course' and 'Harm's Way' Finalists of Unlock Xbox Competition

Fan-Selected Favorites to be Developed into Xbox LIVE Arcade Games

PLANO, Texas, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Doritos brand today announced that "Avatar Crash Course" and "Harm's Way," unique game concepts created by Jill Robertson of Raleigh, NC and Justin Carpenter of Ogden, Utah, respectively, are the two remaining finalists of the Doritos "Unlock Xbox" challenge. The games now will be developed into full Xbox LIVE® Arcade games, expected to be released in fall 2010 where they will compete head-to-head for the contest's grand prize -- a $50,000 cash reward and an opportunity to consult with Doritos on gaming.

This marks the second time PepsiCo's Frito-Lay division has brokered a partnership between the Doritos brand and Microsoft to provide video game enthusiasts the creative challenge of a lifetime and the opportunity to play a lead role in developing a video game based on their own ideas and inspiration.

Robertson and Carpenter now will collaborate with Xbox 360 and a renowned development team to turn their visions into reality. Once both games are completed, they will become available on Xbox LIVE Arcade, the premier destination for downloadable games, where one grand prize winner will be crowned based on the number of votes they receive. The entire process will be turned into an online documentary video series that fans will be able to watch by visiting www.UnlockXbox.com.

"We continue to be amazed by the creativity of Doritos fans and feel like we are once again on the brink of creating blockbuster gaming experiences that we hope Xbox fans will enjoy," said Rudy Wilson, vice president, marketing, Frito-Lay. "It was incredible to see the consumer voting community rally around a wide range of innovative game ideas, and we are thrilled to offer our fans a chance to live their dream and create their own Xbox LIVE Arcade game."

Both games, along with runner-up game "Thrown," a concept by Jason Santa Maria of San Diego, CA, were narrowed down from 1,500 unique game ideas submitted in the fall of 2009. Eight quarter-finalists were selected and fans voted online for their favorites based on video pitches made to Microsoft. In early January, the field was narrowed to the top-three contenders, who then traveled to Seattle for one final pitch to executives from Microsoft and Doritos, where the selection of the final two was made.

Robertson's "Avatar Crash Course" is high-energy fun for everyone. Full of comical mishaps, players maneuver their avatars through ruthless obstacles and crazy levels as they battle to be number one. Great as a casual party game, "Avatar Crash Course" also can be enjoyed in multiplayer mode with up to four friends. Or, go for the challenge of playing solo and try to level up and beat your best times through the campaign, fighting to achieve the best time and get the gold. Either way, you'll have a chance to get great power-ups, such as shoes to run faster and a belt that improves balance.

Carpenter's "Harms Way" is a fast-paced, action-packed race that pairs up drivers and snipers, offering various game modes to choose from. As a sniper, players will help their driver win by any means necessary doing anything from blocking an opponent's path to creating shortcuts that earn nitrous. When you're the driver, players will want to be aggressive and ram the other cars off the road. Enjoy four-player split screens, online play and plenty of explosions.

Unlock Xbox is one of many ways the Doritos brand continues to turn control over to consumers. The brand's commitment to fan-empowerment began with the Doritos "Crash the Super Bowl" program, which started in 2007 and has turned the brand's Super Bowl advertising over to its fans every year. In addition, the brand has put consumers in control through a variety of other exciting opportunities, including the Doritos "X-13D Flavor Experiment," where consumers had a chance to name a new mysterious flavor of chips; "THE QUEST," which engaged fans in a multi-faceted online and real-world adventure of challenges; and "Doritos Late Night," which provided Doritos fans ground-breaking virtual musical performances by blink-182 and Big Boi through the power of augmented reality technology where fans could enjoy and control the performances in the palm of their hand.

MS Xbox World has gotten its hands on some early footage of the Xbox Live Arcade version of NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, complete with widescreen presentation and tidied up sprites.

They've got several videos over at their site - achievements, the character select screen and more. It looks good - certainly better than SNK's previous XBLA games. Let's hope it turns out well.

The Major Nelson podcast has said that KrissX (Kriss Kross) will be available this week. It's the puzzle game by Blitz Arcade, that's published by Konami that's not announced officially at all.

DOTW is Portal. 800 Points, next week is 'Splosion Man for 400.

Hard megaman achievements is how a true "achievement" should look, not everyone and their mother can 200 that game.

400 points for 'splosion I can agree with.

i dont know if anyone mentioned it here earlier...but why doesnt microsoft do up there "Age of Empire"/"Monster Truck Madness" series???? i used to love to play them on PC

KrissX wouldn't be worth buying if it was an 80 point Indie Game. They're having a laugh if they think anyone's buying it for 800.

You're given a crossword with all the letters filled in, but some are the wrong way round and you have to switch them to make words. Because the player is a fucking moron and a four letter anagram is beyond their tiny little brain, the game helpfully gives clues as to what the word is, so as to remove any chance at all that the game could accidentally challenge the player. These clues only just stop short of saying "the answer is..."

It also has flashing blocks and pulsing lights all over the place, and the clues that appear obscure most of the grid meaning that half the time, you can't even see most of the playing field.

Massive waste of time.

Seriously, where the fuck is Perfect Dark!?!?!? I'm sick of waiting. They said December, then it got pushed back to the end of January and now it is the end of January and it's still not up.....

It seems like Rare doesn't want our money, even though they are tied to doing slave labor for Natal. They could always outsource it to Backbone or 4J Studios.

One legacy port at a time it seems, they gotta finish up Perfect Dark. Also, at the rate Rare is going, 2011.

2007 Jetpac Refeuled
2008 Banjo-Kazooie
2009 Banjo-Tooie
2010 Perfect Dark
2011 ???????????

Splosion Man for 400 points? Yes, I'll do that.

Combined with the $30 Amazon deals I've gotten, these DOTWs are basically paying for my Gold subscription. I buy at least half of my arcade titles like this.

Director Explains Why Is Death By Cube Only For Xbox Live Arcade

There are a number of Square Enix developed games on Xbox Live Arcade including Death by Cube. Crystal Defenders, which was originally an iPhone game, is their only multiplatform digital title. So, how come there isn’t say… a WiiWare version of 0 Day Attack on Earth or Yousmin on PlayStation Network?

We can’t answer that question for Square Enix’s entire downloadable catalog, but we have an answer in regards to Death by Cube. “We of course explored every possibility including handheld consoles and PC. When the project proposal was made, the market size of PlayStation Network or WiiWare were still unknown, and we were subject to a situation where it was difficult to extend the development size,” Yousuke Shiokawa, Director of Death by Cube, said to Siliconera in an interview.

“From these two viewpoints, we decided to release it for Xbox LIVE Arcade only. If the title is received well in the market as a new franchise, then I would say it opens up a lot of opportunities.”

For an in-depth look at Death by Cube’s design check out our interview with Shiokawa.

"A World of Keflings is much more than a sequel," said Steve Taylor, President of NinjaBee. "It's a new game with a ton of new features, including some innovative ideas that stand out from both Live Arcade and full retail games. A World of Keflings also has a new story focus, with new exotic lands, characters, quests, buildings, customization options, and a lot more."

"When we set out to make a second Keflings game we decided that we were going to do it right and make it a whole new experience that clearly was bigger and better than the first," said Brent Fox, NinjaBee's Art Director. "A World of Keflings captures all the charm and casual-style of play of the first game, but adds more depth, humor and a ton of features players have requested."

Avatar Crash Course is such a no-brainer pick for that Dorito's game. I laughed during the presentation because she lists all these simple physical challenge activities and then at the end goes "Maybe this could be a Natal game" and the only response you can have is "You mean you weren't describing a Natal game?"

http://www.gamerbytes.com/2010/01/microsofts_genius_rate_the_gam.php

Some might say that Nintendo's Virtual Console is "free money" for publishers. While true for games that are very popular and guaranteed to sell, lesser known titles may end up costing publishers if only a few people buy them

The reason for this is rating systems - every game costs money to be rated by the ESRB, PEGI and so forth. Estimates suggest the rating of a video game usually ranges in $2,500 to $3,000 cost to rate a game. It's not much money for a publisher, but it is a barrier with a minimum sell through rate for them to break even.

But it appears that Microsoft are doing something quite different, something that skips all of it and makes Game Room an incredibly cheap deal - they've rated the Game Room application itself.

Game Room has been rated E10+ by the ESRB, which means every single game that they release within the Game Room will get an instant E or E10+ rating without having to go through the ESRB again. Think of it as an ever expanding compilation disc, and the reason why you'll be able to get something super obscure like Mountain Madness: Super Pro Skiing.

But what of games that are rated, or could be rated, Teen or Mature? When asked a Mircosoft representative responded thusly: "Games available for download within “Game Room” will carry either E or E10+ ratings", "We currently have no plans to feature titles of those ratings".

This means that Teen or Mature rated games will not be available in Game Room. For the most part this is not a problem as almost all games before the 1990's fit within the range of E or E10+, but what this does mean is we won't be seeing the likes of Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter in Game Room - both which were rated Teen for Virtual Console.

It's not as particularly as strict as one may think though - looking back at past ESRB decisions for Virtual Console, games from the Streets of Rage series as well as the first two Final Fight games all got E10+ ratings. This ruling generally involves games like Splatterhouse or SNK's Metal Slug series, which were also Teen rated.

While not having Teen or Mature titles might seem a bit restrictive, the lack of a rating means any game that Microsoft can get the license to redistribute can be put on Game Room with little money involves, outside of the emulation process. Activision's full Atari 2600 catalog can be put onto the Game Room, and looking into the future games like Sega's Green Dog or EA's Desert Strike series could painlessly come onto the console with little money involved. It's a fantastic idea and allows a much more open system to allow games to be made for download cheaper than before.

Besides - you already have Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Street Fighter HD Remix, what other Teen game could you possibly want, that's not based on a license, would you want for the Game Room?
