Having failed to find an appropriate publisher for its "finished, super polished" XBLA word game, Quarrel, developer Denki has announced layoffs of much of its staff. The "major restructuring" -- Develop claims the staff has shrunken from 25 to just 6 -- comes just one week after an exciting new trailer showed off the game's features. The studio hopes to abandon its "old business model" and gain better access to players directly, though it seems the game likely won't be heading to XBLA.
Denki's post posits that the game industry, in its reliance on low-risk projects, "doesn't value good games. Players do, but the games industry doesn't." It also notes that the game will still be released in some form "this year -- supposing we have to bring the board game version round each of your houses one-by-one." Keep your tea and biscuits at the ready! Oh, and also, if you're looking for developers, Denki would be happy to hear from you.

I just got Age of Booty and South Park. I already had Lumines and SSFIIHD.AlphaTwo00 said:Sale was awesome, bought:
- Age of Booty

- Mad Tracks
- Rocket Riot
- Schizoid
- South Park Let's Go Tower Defense Play!
Already had
- Lumines LIVE

Definitely don't like the fact that Rocket Riot is kinda empty right now...

Services like Xbox Live Arcade have done a good job of reviving classic genres and reinventing them for modern audiences. Unfortunately, one genre that's been sorely under-represented is the top-down dungeon crawler. Arrowhead Game Studios' Magicka is looking to fill that void, mixing in classic Diablo gameplay with elements of The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.
The premise should be familiar to anyone that's played a fantasy adventure game before. An evil old wizard is trying to destroy the world and only you (and three other players) can stop him. The tired setting isn't a handicap for Magicka, though, as it allows Arrowhead to satire some of the genre's conventions and most iconic moments. (For example, a hidden area will have you grabbing a "Master Sword" from a stone pedestal, with Zelda-esque music playing in the background.)
What is unique is its gameplay, which focuses on casting element-based magic using the right analog stick. Various elements are assigned to eight directions on the stick, and hitting the analog in a certain direction queues up a spell. The placement of the various elements (and the iconography used to represent them) isn't particularly clear, making Magicka not the most intuitive game to play. However, these elements can be combined and stacked to create interesting spells -- and the addition of co-op multiplayer makes casting magic even more dynamic.
For example, a single player can select both fire and water to create a steam attack. You can add earth to that same spell, and you'll be able to cast a bomb that explodes in steam. You can also stack the same element to create a more powerful version of a spell. For example, fire combined with fire combined with fire makes for (get ready for it) really big fire. The downside of using heavier spells is your character will move much slower. During battles, you'll not only have to think about what elements to use, but how to use them. During boss battles, for example, being slowed down may leave you incredibly vulnerable.
Magicka is at its best with friends. Each player has access to the same spell wheel, and friends and enemies are affected by spells equally. It's a lot of fun to (accidentally) set a co-op buddy on fire as you try to take down a swarm of encroaching enemies. With up to four players playing simultaneously, it's possible to create some diverse strategies. For example, every player can use a different ability in tandem: one player can set up a barrier, while another casts an offensive spell, while another focuses on healing the party, while the final player uses melee attacks. Other times, it may be smarter for everyone to simply cast the same spell on the same target simultaneously.
The small snipped of Magicka I played showed a lot of promise, thanks to its simple and fun-to-use magic system. It's a simple title, perfect for a co-op romp on Live. We're hoping the final game demands using the various elements in more original ways. We already saw a hint: a hidden path that can only be accessed by freezing a river with ice, for example. Paradox Interactive is aiming for a Q3 release on PC, with an Xbox version planned (but not necessarily confirmed).

Yeah what's up with Zeno Clash anyway. I really thought it was supposed to be out last week. =\EagleEyes said:Strange that there is no Arcade release tomorrow. I thought for sure it would be Zeno Clash since they just released a trailer on XBL this morning. Oh well.

What are your predictions. I imagine they are holding their big guns for that one.
My guess is we probably won't see some of our most anticipated games till then. I imagine they're gearing up Monday Night Combat to headline it. Maybe we'll finally see Fez. Super Meat boy and Shank would also be good candidates, though I think those are multi-platform so that might interfere some. I'd say Risk: Factions too, but I have a feeling that will release some time sooner.
Whatcha guys think?
Definitely think Hydro Thunder Hurricane and Limbo will also be in the Summer of Arcade.BurritoBushido said:So you think Microsoft is going to do another Summer of Arcade this year?

Game Room will never get remakes and upgraded ports like final fight and HDremix, I do hope in the future though we get the original arcade versions from those sorts of games in game room.RadarScope1 said:I could see them trying to entice the Super Meat Boy dev by putting them in the Summer of Arcade in exchange for timed exclusivity.
...
I watched the Giant Bomb quicklook of FF Double Impact. Looks really cool, but I'm wondering about arcade releases like this now that Game Room is out.

The Games Company (straightforward name) has today announced the digital debut of its third-person horror shooter series, Afterfall. Afterfall: Insanity will be releasing for PC, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network early next year, and it's looking suitably f*cked up.
Afterfall has a premise very similar to Metro 2033, in that it's a post-apocalyptic horror shooter set in spooky underground tunnels. All kinds of monstrosities lurk in the sewers and it's up to a guy who looks a bit like a Warhammer 40K Space Marine to deal with them.
Yet again, Afterfall looks set to bring a serious and robust game to the digital market, and while it certainly doesn't seem too original, it does look rather demented. Demented's always good in our book, so we're quite looking forward to seeing where this one goes.
Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is a role playing RTS puzzle hybrid DS title that is just simply awesome. It was actually the fourth highest rated DS game of 2009! Now, Capybara is bringing Clash of Heroes to Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network later this year. Dont you dare call this a port! Seriously, Capybara people barf when Clash HD is referred to as a port.
The biggest obvious change with Clash HD is the 2D HD visuals. All of the backgrounds and character art have been revamped and look simply beautiful. The attention to detail is a little mind blowing considering that a very small team is working on Clash HD. Some of the attack animations -- all hand drawn -- are 140 frames!
The other big change is the the multiplayer. Capy loved the multiplayer features of the original game, but only about ten percent of the DS audience gave the multiplayer a proper spin. Clash HD has a bigger focus on the multiplayer and now youll be able to go online, do two vs two battles and there will be a ranking system that will let the awesome players know just how awesome they are at kicking ass online.
Aside from that, theres going to be some gameplay tweaks that fans of the DS title have complained about. Some of the fighting aspects will be rebalanced and youll be able to revisit previous chapters as well. You can also see just how strong your opponent will be before entering a battle and have the option of backing out if youre not up for the fight yet.

How upgraded is FFDI? There's online play and some filters but is that all? GR is supposed to have online play but we'll see. I'm just shy about buying it outside of GR if both of those games will come to it later. It's not about the Allards, just my OCD to have things in one place.Diablohead said:Game Room will never get remakes and upgraded ports like final fight and HDremix, I do hope in the future though we get the original arcade versions from those sorts of games in game room.
Speaking of, it's real stupid that we have to wait an entire month before another game pack comes out for game room, it's just so wrong especially when it's so new. I bet a lot of people think the current games is all the room is getting or something.
