BattleBlock Theater, King of the Hill mode:

KotH-s.bmp

It’s like a king of the hill game- claim the special golden blocks as your own and do anything you can to keep the other guys off. I mean, look. These are your blocks and you are the king of them. You can’t let just anybody come and stand on your blocks. Give those interlopers the royal treatment. And by royal treatment I mean uppercut them into some spikes or push them into some nice lava. That is the sign of a true king.

Plants vs. Zombies XBLA Dated, Awesome
You've defended your PC, iPhone, and iPad. Now your 360 needs you.

It's been a long time coming, but the Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) version of Plants vs. Zombies is almost here. Everyone's favorite tower defense game debuted on PC last year, then came to iPhone/iPad, and now it's finally coming to the Xbox 360 on September 8.

When developer PopCap brought Peggle from PC to XBLA it did a great job transitioning the controls from mouse to controller. We played Plants vs. Zombies XBLA at an event this evening and can confirm PopCap has done it again. It's just as fast and breezy to play as it is on other platforms. The left stick quickly whisks your cursor around your yard and the A button plants your defenses. The bumpers cycle through your available seeds at the top of the screen. And holding the triggers will suck sunlight to your cursor, so you don't have to "mouse over" every single one.

As it did with Peggle XBLA, PopCap has added great multiplayer modes here. Two players can fend off the zombies cooperatively on one lawn. Each planter picks their own arsenal of seeds – we found success by letting one player use defensive plants and the other offensive.

Then there is the fantastic versus mode. Here, one player gets to control the zombies and try to eat their way into the other player's home. On the zombie's side of the lawn, each lane runs up to a zombie holding a target. If the plant side can shoot down three of the zombie's target, it wins the match. We had a blast with this mode.

The appeal of Plants vs. Zombies seems to be universal, so if you have a 360 and haven't yet enjoyed the game on another platform you should definitely mark your calendar for September 8. Even if you have already played it, you'll likely be sucked into the new multiplayer modes here.

NBA Jam Confirmed for Xbox 360, PS3
But you'll need to buy NBA Elite 11 to get it.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3180690

Former Wii-exclusive NBA Jam going to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 hasn't been a well-kept secret. It was outed by the German ratings board, then again our own. EA curiously announced its release date along with NBA Elite 11, which now suddenly makes perfect sense.

Apparently, NBA Elite 11 will include a download code for NBA Jam on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A press release sent out by EA today mentions that the code will allow users to access three modes of NBA Jam: Play Now, Classic Campaign, and Online. That may sound like it's a trial version and the full game will come later, but according to the PlayStation Blog, "the ONLY way you will be able to play NBA JAM for the PS3 is to buy NBA ELITE 11." We can only assume, for now, that the same is true for the Xbox 360 version.

EA has been emphasizing the Wii version, which made it seem like a timed exclusive. Instead, it's the only "complete" version, and the only one that players can pay for on its own. EA has been in the habit of including downloadable codes in its new games, but this pits that strategy directly against a downloadable game on another platform. The publisher might be testing the waters to see what kind of difference the alternative methods make.

XBLA Lead and Gold isn't happening, says Paradox CEO

In a recent conversation with Paradox Interactive's Fredrik Wester, the CEO told Joystiq that while he'd like Lead and Gold to shoot up Xbox Live Arcade, in addition to PSN and Steam, he doesn't think it's going to happen. "It seems like we have to put it on the backburner," Wester said. "We're not really putting any more effort into releasing on XBLA, so I would say if you want to play the game, you should do it on PC or PSN, because we're not really sure that we can ever release it on XBLA. Or that we're ever gonna release it on XBLA. It's unfortunate, but you know, things happen. We love XBLA and would love to be on it, but with Lead and Gold, we just have to move on."

And that's unfortunate, as Wester (no, not Wesker) said DLC is in the pipe for L&G, and early issues with lag in the game have been amended. He's also excited for the next console release that Paradox has planned: Magicka. "When I first played it, I was like, 'Shit, this is a great game!' So we put more effort into it and we're gonna make it into a really good project," Wester told us. While the game is built using XNA and intended for an XBLA release, Wester's not sure where it'll end up (though he offers up the XBL Indie Marketplace as another possible destination).

Anyone else really not feeling BattleBlock Theater? I absolutely love Castle Crashers and really want to like BBT, but it just doesn't look too interesting. At the moment I wish they'd just make a nice expansion for Castle Crashers instead. I'd like to be proven wrong, but that's how I've felt since it was announced.

Plants vs Zombies Preview Event
http://www.360sync.com/2010/08/03/plants-vs-zombies-preview-event

Up until yesterday evening, I had never played Plants vs Zombies. Gaming people I know looked at me odd when I had told them this, considering I love games like Peggle, Zuma, and Heavy Weapon. It’s the same look I get when I tell people I’ve never seen “Something About Mary”.

Don’t judge. I just haven’t gotten around to watching it.

I can honestly say though, after playing the new Plants vs Zombies that PopCap has cooked up for XBLA, I now understand why people looked at me the way they did. The game holds true to PopCap’s style, offering simple game play for casual gamers, and enough challenge mixed in to keep the seasoned gamers interested as well. It was easy to just jump in, no matter what experience level you were, and do what matters most; just play.

The game itself has been done in full 1080p for the first time, and looks just amazing. I had seen box covers in stores, and game play on line, but those photos and videos don’t do justice to the new high definition rendering of this game. It looks as though you can reach out and plant a flower, or shoo a zombie away.

Having never played the game myself, I listened in on some of the questions being asked by fellow gamers around me who were more familiar with the game. Since the game was originally done on PC and iPhone, the overall concern everyone had was whether or not tracking would translate well from mouse or touch screen to analog sticks. Would it interfere with my ability to pick up seed packets quick enough? What about collecting suns, or planting for that matter?

“Oh, we fixed all of that” said Associate Producer, Ty Roberts. “We knew that would be a concern.”

He then went on to give me a rundown of the control scheme for the 360, and how it would compensate for the lack of mouse-like precision. On screen, you have a bracketed cursor, moved with the left analog stick. Need to dig up a plant? Hold down the B button. Boom. Auto-dig. Didn’t even need to select it. Need to plant a Pea Shooter on the double? Select your seed pack with the shoulder buttons, quickly and effortlessly. Need to collect those little yellow suns scattered about your flower bed? There’s a new magnet feature where you can auto collect your sunlight lickety-split.

As if just bringing the game to XBLA was not enough, there are few new features to tantalize new comers and gardening veterans alike. Being the Xbox person that I am, I love showing off my achievements. The team behind the game knows this to be true for a lot of gamers. Enter your crib. Your crib is a house that you can upgrade as you earn cash, and show off your accomplishments. Select from houses such as the trailer, or space house. On either side is a trash can, one filled with zombies you’ve slain, the other piled high with plant soldiers you’ve lost. On your lawn are small plants and garden memorials that represent the achievements you’ve unlocked. You can even use Crazy Dave’s car to cruise up the street and view your friend’s cribz and compare.

Another new feature is the addition of Co-Op and Vs. modes. Before we go any further I will get this out of the way before the question is asked. YES. You can play as zombies in Vs. mode. In fact, they’ve added the new Trash Can Zombie to the roster. He’s a slower shambling zombie pushing a full trash can, which serves as his protection. In Co-Op, join forces and work together against the zombie onslaught, with drop in drop out.

To sum up, all 50 levels of the original Adventure mode along with Puzzle, Survival, and Zen Garden have made it into this game, as well as Heavy Weapon mode. There are tons of features exclusive to the Xbox 360, including Co-Op and Vs. New control mechanics, and to top it all off, a new zombie in the army. That’s a lot of entertainment for 1200 Microsoft Points.

Plants vs Zombies is scheduled to release in September.

I just saw the trailer on Kotaku... I never thought I would be this excited to play PvZ for a third time.

PopCap wins my monies for all eternity. Now, if they'd jusy start cranking games out a little faster...

I am with you on that. Its lacking the style compared to Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. I was honestly expecting a real pure platformer with a bit more style akin to their previous efforts. Not some weird coop platformer game that looks like a generic flash game. (Yes AH and CC look like an awesome flash game and are awesome games.)

Playing it for the first time recently myself. I'm on my second run-through (on hard), trying to level up so that I can do the 2-hour 100% percent run on casual. Might try the Insurgent run after that, just so I can get closer to the top of my friends list leaderboard.

I was expecting to like it, but it really surprised me how much I actually do like it. It's not quite as killer the second time through, but the challenge of going for a speed run after this playthrough will be a good one.

Just noticed this now, and wow are those guys douchebags. More people being able to play and enjoy a game is always a good thing.
That segment of the interview was mostly braggadocio to please their target audience. The first levels aren't that difficult at all. They have an interesting mechanic for increasing the difficulty. Levels have a "nightmare mode" that adds more traps to increase the challenge. DLC for these type of games typically includes a variety of levels that appeal to different skillsets.

But I would never expect to see anything like NSMB's automatic mode from a hardcore indie game. The game is the game. You either have the skill to beat the level or you don't.

Judging from those screens above, the art is terrible and lazy. Castle Crashers at least had nice use of color.

ok couple things about battleblock - both because i like the game and i like the behemoth dudes.

first, i think your opinion would be different if you played it. its an amazingly fun, interesting and varied coop platformer. i had a lot of fun playing it at PAX.

Second, those screens are not really a good representation. IMO the game will look great when completed, and already looks really good in motion (and way more packed than those screens). What we're seeing is pre-polish AND not in motion. And we all should know that mr. paladin knows how to make a great looking game.

I think people should press pause and wait until more gets out on this game before crapping on it - in my humble opinion the quality of AH and CC have earned them some leeway.

:)

Yeah castle crashers wasn't a buggy save erasing almost unplayable online mess when it released, nor did alien hominid have that glitch that erases all your data constantly :lol

Battle block theatre to me feels like a step backwards from castle crashers, it might have more depth in gameplay but overall it's not something I plan to buy, castle crashers was amazing and thankfully I bought it after the huge save file problems since I was away from the internet at the time of original release.

Will have to see how it turns out a few weeks after launch.

yeah, sometimes games have bugs. it happens, and it's shitty when it does. if those issues make you not want to buy battleblock, fair enough.

Bugs are one thing, coming off as if the game was never play tested before release is another. I'll keep an eye on their new game as the core of their last 2 games was very good.

It's just funny how both of their games had glitches that erased your saves, third time maybe it will wipe our hdds.

They're indie making games on their own dime. It's very hard when you have a small staff, you can't afford amazing exhaustive QA like a giant publisher can.

They patched it out eventually anyways (didn't they? lol). I'm not excusing it, but just saying it's tough. For them to make such an amazing experience at all is a testament to their abilities in general. Anyway I'm glad to hear you're not counting them out because of bugs.

I think what really angered the mass audience at the time was the dollar dlc release they had when the bugs were still crawling across the game. The very fact they are willing to squash the bugs is a plus in my book.

Wasn't Castle crashers published by MS, so the QA is in their hands?

MS forced them to charge for the DLC. They released a lot of free codes, so anyone who was aware at least at the time could get it for free. Though with the huge sales they got, there's no need to waste any pity on them. I'm sure their new game will be great, and do big sales also.

NBA Jam Preview
http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/111/1111012p1.html

NBA Jam Makes Its High-Def Debut

The game I played featured the Lakers against the Celtics. That meant it was Kobe and Pau Gasol for the Lakers and Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo for the Celtics. The guards played as you'd expect, with Kobe having the expected ability of slamming the ball home unless the big guys on the court timed their jump just right. As our direct-feed gameplay clips show, there's the potential for a good amount of blocks in NBA Jam if players continually try to go inside for the dunk.

Don't get me wrong, there were still enough dunks and alley-oops for me to be able to break the backboard (an insanely rewarding experience), but I never felt totally safe from getting blocked and totally embarrassed. That, in turn, only upped the satisfaction I felt when I successfully stuffed one in the face of my opponent.

The gameplay is pretty much identical to what you'll find in the new Wii version of Jam. You can still alter your dunk in mid-air and turn it into a layup, and the ability to break your opponent's ankles with a dribbling move is still very much intact. In fact, there are no gameplay mechanics exclusive to either version. The experience is the same throughout, less the enhanced graphics on the high-def systems.

That's not to say that the feature set is identical. Those playing on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 won't get any of the 91 challenges that Wii players will enjoy. Instead they'll get the more straightforward Play Now and Classic Campaign (a ladder tournament) to go along with online and local multiplayer. Online multiplayer could be a point of contention for those planning to purchase the Wii version as the feature has yet to be confirmed for Nintendo's system.

Housemarque To Announce XBLA/PSN Title At PAX
http://www.gamerbytes.com/2010/08/housemarque_to_announce_xblaps.php

Housemarque are mighty busy with Dead Nation for PSN right now, but they're working on another title -- and this one is cross platform.

Revealed via their Twitter feed, Housemarque have announced that they're working on an Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network title which will be announced at the Penny Arcade Expo.

Housemarque have previously worked on both platforms -- Super Stardust HD on PSN and Golf: Tee It Up on Xbox Live Arcade. They have also worked with other publishers like Activision, so whether they've had the privilege of doing this themselves or with a publisher is currently unknown.

Still, the Finnish developed are a super talented bunch, can't wait to find out what their project is.
