Agreed on all counts, especially the platformers. We've gotten and are getting schmups, (Assault Heroes rocks, Mutant Storm Empire is around the corner)so no worries there. I'd like some new platformers. My daughter and I are nearly done with Cloning Clyde and I'd like another. That game is wholly unique on Live Arcade right now. Castle Crashers is going to fill a nice niche.

I want some more "kiddie" old school games but I think alot of publishers wish to continue the stereotyping of the 360 platform this gen. Self fulfilling prophesy, really.

Ristar, New Zealand Story, Bubsy 1, etc.............

the incredible machine? that's not quite stereotyping the 360 ;)

For me, the benefit of playing on my sofa (okay, bean bag) with a controller in the den is a huge benefit that helps offset the premium. Though, I can understand why others would not.

I would love to play those games on my 360 especially Lumines and Worms, too. But it still is arcade. And almost 15 Euro for an arcade-game is a rip-off in my eyes.

It's not like there's been any information on it since the announcement, which brings me to my main complaint: the total information blackout on XBLA games. Why does it seem that news/previews for the upcoming games barely exist? I understand that a lot of the devs are small and don't have a lot of resources (PomPom appears to be only two guys), but surely it would be possible for a quarterly "arcade press day" or something where the major sites get to play recent builds and do previews.

It's just weird how there's a complete lack of anything from so many of the devs or MS.

Previews and creating a preview build that's not on PartnerNet takes time away from development cycles. In most cases, the smaller developers (and I'm sure the bigger developers have smaller teams), can't easily put this together without impacting their development timeline. I mean, in making a bigger game, these things affect development, but they are usually factored in and since it usually takes a long, long time to make a game, it works out ok.

That being said, there's stuff in the works to allow for previews to come out.

I can see how a "full" preview/build would eat dev cycles, but how much time would be eaten by hitting Print Scrn a few times, or a basic Q&A email exchange? Look how much interest was generated by the leaked Worms screenshots!

Hell, just an email address for the Settlers of Cataan devs would be nice.

Please put some classic board games like Risk, Clue, Monopoly on XBLA so I can play with my family.

Monopoly would make a fortune… imagine…
You could buy the base game and then themes could be sold separately. Like Halo-opoly or Viva Pinopoly. This goes for Risk too!

Too bad I don’t like Monopoly.

well MS may have them in the cooker... they already have German board games on their way for Europe. Most likely they are on their way sooner or later.

Screens from devs aren't ever as simple as hitting print scrn or "take screenshot" off of a development kit. Remember, devs will want whatever screenshot not only looking their best but are likely very picky about it. It's just not that easy. Partly why non-approved screens from PartnerNet are frowned upon.

Settlers of Catan devs.... hmmm... well trust me, they're real good.

Sure it is. Just look at these gems...
http://www.gamespot.com/wii/action/farcry/screenindex.html?page=2

Which proves both of our points, really. That said, considering that a good portion of the XBLA games seem to be 2D oriented (or in the case of Settlers, a board game), I can't imagine that it would be much more effort to get decent (or non-terrible) than mashing that button and getting some grabs.

Did you just make that up?

Now THAT game is a welcome comeback. It'll eat up a lot of my time, I'm sure :)

well, having worked on a bunch of games I know in general that the one thing that always gets pushback from the project manager is getting screens/videos/other assets. that's at least where my assumptions are coming from. somebody, true or not, sees it as a time investment.

Any chance of Streets of Rage for XBL Arcade?

Everybody wants this but SEGA seem to have completely abdoned the series. It's not appeared on any greatest hits comps, no hint at a sequel, or anything. And yet everyone I know remembers the series very fondly.

Arne, your trying too hard man. I could name a handful of games that could "counter" any argument about the Gamecube being "kiddie" to publishers but it wouldn't hide the truth. Same goes with the stereotyping of 360 regarding alot of publishers (didn't say all, take note), although XBLA isn't quite as bad as there is more room for risk. However, it is still seen as the "boobs, guns and beer" gamer console. Which is why you are more likely to see alot of violent old school games than "teh kiddiez" on XBLA coming from certain publishers. There are always, however, exceptions to the rule.

you're taking me too seriously with my reply haha, that's why i picked the most game that was way too obvious to point out that didn't fit into that stereotype. you had/have a point :)

Hey Arne, are MS looking at putting some serious effort to get rid of this stereotype in 2007? Outside of XBLA are we going to see more non-shooters from publishers?

not really the place for this in the XBLA thread so I'll keep it brief. I think there's a pretty clear indication that MS wants to diversify the portfolio, the thing is, xbox or not, shooters sell pretty well on any platform. I just think you'll see that won't be the "only" thing on there (besides sports). There's 5 rpgs for 2007 and beyond (rest of the world, since Japan already has BD), etc. I think MS will lead by example (Viva, Banjo, BD/LO, Halo Wars, etc.) in some instances to make others follow suit, even if they're "expected" projects like Banjo. We'll see if it works.

/end derailment

Team17/microsoft, if this worms lives up to worms 2/arma/world party, has stable online, features, and content, I will never ever bash XBLA again, this would be a potential GOTY.

And for god sakes allow 4 pads and not the joint swapping style.

Worms on dreamcast was the best console worms ever, but its online was so broken that it never became what it could, if this game is, my god im going to spaz.

To bring this back to the Arcade discussion....I've noticed the mix of Arcade games is getting pretty good. Just looking back at the last eight releases:

Contra
Defender
Small Arms
Ultimate Mortal Kombat III
Roboblitz
Assault Heroes
Novadrome

New Rally-X

The bolded items are original content, the rest are classic (or near-classic) arcade games. That's a good mix, and way much better than any stretch since the service launched. I really hope it's indicitive of the mix going forward, with some puzzle, platform and casual games tossed into the mix.

Not necessarily, the Mad Tracks achievements have been up for a while. I'd much rather have that game anyway.

Wait, what? Did I miss something? Is The Incredible Machine really coming to XBLA?? It's only one of my favorite puzzle games of all time, that's all! DO NOT TOY WITH MY EMOTIONS, ARNE.

Killer Instinct 1
- Arcade Perfect
- Better online multi than SF2 and UMK3

It's either this or KI3. I'll let you choose Rare...

In other news... I'd like Monopoly please.

Yeah, I would settle for a Connect4 XBL arcade game if they don't release Streets of Rage on XBL Arcade.

does assault heroes support online coop?

Yes. And that's the only way I play. It makes it more fun to fight over weapon upgrades and bonus point stars. And if someone dies in an underground bunker, it ****s you both.

However, the document also reveals a great deal of previously unknown information on Vivendi's strategy, including confirmation of many unannounced titles from the company's Sierra Online division. These include Xbox 360 Live Arcade title Megaforce for this year, alongside Xbox 360 Live Arcade and PC SKUs of 3D Ultra Mini Golf, as well as PC and Xbox 360 Live Arcade titles based on classic puzzler The Incredible Machine in 2007.

Ms Pacman it is then! I already have Pacman, is it worth getting Ms Pacman or is it just the same game but with a bow on her head?
It's significantly better (it's faster, different mazes, more random ghost movement), I'll be getting it, I passed on Pac-Man to wait for it.

you may be surprised, but that worms announcement was the reason I bought a 360 instead of Wii. I love Worms.

Worms killer app!

Actually before the 360 came out I was mostly excited about what I'd seen of Mutant Storm and Geo Wars, more than any other game.

Is the game coming out really supposed to be secret? Or is it just a matter of no one reporting what it is, even though it's no secret? I'm just curious...

I find it hard to believe keeping the XBLA Wednesday game secret is really intentional. If it is then I'm not sure if the developers are happy their games get almost zero preview coverage and hardly a mention when they do come out. Do potential customers really have to dig through gaming forum threads or blogs for XBLA Wednesday news? Is a mention on majornelson that it's out the extent of the fanfare it gets?

Did several so-called marketing people study all these years for this?
