You got a point there. Although I'd rather play old console games than old arcade games. I also understand that it's easier to port an emulator and some roms than recode old arcade games with online components. My question is, why don't MS port some good arcade games?pswii60 said:I love the idea of PSN, XBLA and *NEW* 2D platformers, shooters, simple, fun games. Yes it is. Because not only does Nintendo get stuff out every week on time, but they supply multiple games -- games that many people have never gotten a chance to play (Turbo-Grafx 16 titles are something that very, very few people have ever really gotten a chance to experience.) Outside of last week's horrible offering they've done a pretty damn good job of providing great titles. The VC is bitchslapping XBLA. Which sucks ass, because I have a 360 and XBLA *was* my favorite aspect of it.pswii60 said:But I don't want to play old games so, no, VC is not 'clowning' XBLA.
CES is not a gaming venue. It was a substantial break from the norm last year to have those XBLA games, the Fight Night Round 3 demo, among other things, announced. Typcially, it's hardware and services (like this year). In the CES anticipation threads, people were looking back on last year's announcements to get a feel of what could be announced this year - what kind of announcements. You can hardly blame people for seeing what was announced in years past and wondering if something similar could be up this year. Not to expect it, but to at least speculate because of the precident.arne said:So was Texas Hold 'Em poker. CES is just like any other event, you can announce things. Or not. I don't see why it should set any specific precedent.
Should this year's GDC be where we announce which Japanese developed title will come to the US? Or maybe just make announcements in general?

I'm really anticipating XBLA turning around in the future, but right now it's unbelievably disappointing in the face of both Sony and Nintendo's offerings in the same vein.

pswii60 said:True, Nintendo are consistent, but it's pretty easy to be consistent when all you're doing is uploading a ROM to your server.
These XBLA games, like it or not, have to be changed to accept achievements, the source code needs to be changed from the coin-op board slightly (to enable you to start the game without having ot insert money) and online play is quite often added. It's not a simple case of digging out an old ROM dump and sticking it on the server.
You could argue that all this achievement and online play is not needed, but just remember that one of the main reasons the old XBLA games sell is BECAUSE of achievements. That's the real difference.
maynerd said:The games on VC are not just ROM dumps. They are 480p, they have user guides, and have suspend states all of which are changed from the original ROMs. Sure they are not as complicated as XBLA titles but they aren't exactly ROM dumps either.

beermonkey@tehbias said:Those are all features of the emulator, not the game. They are ROM dumps and they could release a thousand games in a few weeks if they wanted to.
I'll be buying Soldier Blade shortly.
maynerd said:The user guide for the game is built into the emulator? It's written for the game isn't it?
VC will have tons of games that were not available outside of the original consoles ever before, games that people have been really wanting for a long time but couldn't get, and they will be relatively cheap.
But hey you will get your 1 game a week (sometimes) that'll be an arcade game that you can play via flash on your pc for free. AWESOME.

Yeah I loved that story. Someone makes a hack, Namco sees it and goes... oh shit this is better then ours!vitaflo said:MS Pacman originated as a hack of Pacman, by an outside company. That company sold the rights to it to Namco. It's a bit more complicated than that actually, but that's the gist of it.
beermonkey@tehbias said:It's just an extra file that gets included along with the ROM. Hell, some pirate releases include manuals. You could hire clerical temps and shit out hundreds of manuals per day. It's no comparison to actually having to do development and code to add online gameplay, leaderboards, etc.
VC so far = ROM DUMP.
maynerd said:Wow lots of pirating talk going on here...hmm...anyways...
I own both a Wii and an X360. As a consumer all I see are subpar titles coming out on average of 1 title a week thru XBLA. I don't care that it takes more time for an XBLA title to be released. I care that only one title a week (sometimes) are released with 1 interesting title being released every couple of months.
Reading thru this thread and the VC thread it's clear to me Wii owners are more happy with VC than X360 owners are with XBLA. The issue with Wii owners is not when is a good game gonna come out, it's wow there are so many good games to choose from and wow look at all the other good games coming down the pipe. With XBLA it's wow there aren't enough titles coming out each week and there aren't really that many exciting titles coming.
ROM dumps or not there is more excitement around VC than XBLA from people who own their systems.

FirstInHell said:Namco should be banned from releasing XBL Arcade games for the rest of the year. I think a company should only be able to release a certain number of oudated shovelware arcade games a few times a year.
XBL Arcade is slowly becoming irrelevant to me. This is coming from a person who has bought 20+ games on the service. There are only so many times that I can buy a game, play it for five minutes, and forget about it forever (which can be said for the majority of the games MS is releasing).
I think I have reached my threshold of crap. I think I am just going to stop eating it.
pr0cs said:that's a very presumptuous statement.
All this thread really exposes is that people want more unique titles that expand gaming, not the rehashed shit week-in week-out. Neither VC nor XBLA have been good at providing constant, consistent NEW games to their libraries.
I'd love to see new XBLA titles like Assault Heroes and Mutant Storm week in and week out but developing new and innovative titles from scratch isn't like getting a new toy from a crack-jax box, this shit takes time.
maynerd said:it's not presumptious read thru the VC thread and the XBLA thread. It's quite a different vibe.

actually... nintendo hasn't announced a huge library of games coming down the pipe. the majority of what people know is coming on VC comes from the ESRB website and a few publisher annoucements. just as an example.
maynerd said:You are correct they haven't announced many titles. However the ESRB site, publisher anouncements, releases in other countries, and the anticipation of major Nintendo titles from NES, SNES, N64 are enough to cause quite a stir. Will nintendo release their major titles from all of their systems, we don't know for sure, but they'd be dumb not to.
