I really wish Sega would hurry up and announce Chu Chu Rocket! for XBLA. I subscribed to Gametap on the PC only to find out that their version of it doesn't support multiplayer online. I miss the old Dreamcast Chu Chu Rocket online nights! :(

Ikaruga is now up on Partnernet, so it might be coming soon.

Ikaruga is up on partnerNet as of this morning, (a 49.04 mb download), I wonder if this means it will be out soon? I've seen it listed as 1/15/2008 release..
I grabbed some screens of a couple menus, the leaderboard and downloadable replay stuff is nice along with the video and hud settings.

These jpg's are pretty compressed but it looks excellent in motion, runs with antialiasing turned on also. I might grab some video but afterall it's just Ikaruga

So for a moment I thought of all the shit coming to XBLA this year and my brain started to hurt joyfully...

MS3 just passed, O5, N+, Rez, Lode Runner, Castle Crashers... Mmm.

I wasn't expecting that art design for Lode Runner. I'm not as keen for it after seeing those screenies but the demo might change my mind.

Well, yes, eventually, but Partnernet isn't really a good indicator of when a game is going to come out since a game can languish on that for months before going public.

They could mean the 16th of January, but I am going to need something a little more credible before getting the hopes up in earnest.

Wow XBLA in 2008 is already better than the whole of 2007! Omega Five, Rez HD... IKARUGA!!!

Seeing the last picture that Sean posted made me consider tate-ing my set... it's only a 27" so it's possible :)

Any word on a "classic art" style mode, and how level creating's gonna work?

N+ XBLA is going to have a level editor, not sure what you mean about a classic art style though.

We gonna be able to trade them any way? Such a missed opportunity of not. An upload/ranking system for them would be boss. Wouldn't deflate the hype for it at all, though.

And, I thought I saw some media that looked a little different than the classic flash version... Googled a few images just now and it seems pretty authentic, so ignore that.

Woo.

Another big “plus” for N+ is multiplayer support for up to four players, either on a single system or over Xbox Live. Players can work with or against each other in Co-op, Race or Survival games. Co-op Mode comes in two flavors: standard and MP. Basic co-op has players working together through the standard set of single-player levels. MP Mode, on the other hand, gives players a whole new set of levels, especially designed for multiplayer gameplay. Race is pretty self-explanatory, pitting players in a race to the finish through a series of levels, while Survival is a last-man-standing match, featuring stages loaded to the hilt with explosive mines, gun turrets and other hazards ready to snap any wary ninja into a handful of pieces.

N+ is scheduled to release with hundreds of levels to keep players busy for some time, but just in case that’s not enough for you, N+ also includes a simple-to-use level editor, giving players the ability to easily craft stages suited to their own degree of masochism. Blank stages are presented in a large grid, looking much like a giant sheet of graph paper. Players can cycle through N+’s object library and place items on the grid in endless combinations. You can do a dry run of a level on the fly, and fix things up in a snap. It’s all a simple process, yet deep enough to enable you generate a lot of interesting results. Players can save their custom levels and share them with friends, though in this early build I wasn’t able to test out any of the level-sharing capabilities or to see how the custom levels play online. Still, it’s a great way to give the game some extra longevity

That should answer your question.

New 1up.com Preview of Poker Smash

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3165294

It's a puzzle game, looking somewhat like Puyo Puyo or Puzzle Fighter with blocks that build up and move slowly towards the top of the screen, but each of the blocks is a playing card rather than a colored gem. And your goal is to move around pieces so you line up poker hands -- three of a kind, royal flush, etc. As you create hands, those pieces disappear, and you have to keep doing this to prevent the stack from reaching the top of the screen.

So it's essentially Puzzle Fighter for people who want to think about their game in a deeper way, since not only do you have to figure out where to move pieces in order to make playing card hands, but also how that will affect other pieces on the screen and how the remains can fit together. Mix in a limited number of bombs you can use to take out individual pieces that get in your way, and the ability to speed up or slow down how quickly the playing field moves up, and you've got a game with a decent number of variables.

In our hands-on time with the game today, the controls and interface worked great. It's a puzzle game where all you do is move icons around, so it's kind of hard to screw that up on the control side, but from the visual effects, like electricity that shows up when you connect a hand, to the way the camera zooms in when you do well, the presentation doesn't feel cheap like in many Live Arcade casual games. It definitely feels like more of a hardcore puzzle title than a casual one, as these things go.

Hmmm, interest level raised to "mild."

Agreed. I can imagine getting headaches from trying to set up combos if you're thinking ahead about straights and flushes (numbers versus suits) on top of the generic full house and pairs.

Has anyone played Tron recently? How would it hold up on XBox 360? I'd imagine it wouldn't. I played the hell out of the arcade version. Aside from the light cycles, I think the only reason the game was fun was because of the novel control scheme. With dual analogs being the standard now, that gimmick is no longer as fun as it used to be. I expect the gameplay to fall flat on this one, but I haven't played it recently, particularly with a 360 controller.

Today, being the little detectives we like to think we are, we decided to go search crazy on the ESRB ratings board website and we struck XBLA gold! We came across Xbox 360 listings for three new and unannounced XBLA games including PopCap's addictive Peggle, Codemasters' Bliss Island and Majesco's Ultra Bust-A-Move which, in all honestly, could be an Xbox Original seeing that it originally released to the black box a few years back. Since we found all these games listed on the ESRB we have absolutely no other details pertaining to release dates or pricing, but we're sure we'll be seeing one, two or all of them making headlines later this year. So, who is up for some XBLA Peggle?

Taken from the initial announcement:

At the same time we would like to offer a token of our appreciation to all of you in celebration of record success for the service. And as a thank you for your loyalty during this holiday period, we will be offering all of our Xbox LIVE members around the world access to a full Xbox LIVE Arcade game that will be available to download free of charge. In the coming weeks we will be sharing the specific details of this offer with you.
Reading is awesome.

Another XBLA killer app.

Holy moly.

Some big box needs to have a fucking points card sale again, damnit.

All these cool XBLA games and I wonder if the average gamer even knows about them. I spoke to a few different people with 360s last weekend and not one of them realised there were these gems available just a download away.

Yeah true. Even on local gaming boards there's never xbla talk (I visit some Belgian and Dutch boards and there's only talk about retail games)

There really needs to be a separate Arcade blade with XBLA, demos, Originals, etc. and instead they made Arcade games even harder to find.
And I still think another big problem is the default setting is to go directly into a game and not the dashboard, some casuals never even look at the dashboard.

Yeah as much as I like the new cross blade thing going on they have totaly hid xbla from the regular games blade, a bad move imo.

If they keep it as it all is but put the xbla link back into the games blade I think it would be much better.

Stupid question: I just got PGR4, how do I unlock Geometry Wars Waves?
I don't see it in the menu...

You don't "unlock" it.

Haven't playe PGR4 yet but if it's like how they did it in PGR3, you need to walk around in your garage and there should be an arcade cabinet somewhere in there. Walk up to it and there's a prompt to play Geometry Wars there.
