Man, I really wish that Capcom would put Final Fight on XBLA.

I just played it on Gametap for the first time in ages and remembered how much fun I had with the SNES version (even if it was gimped compared to the arcade version).

Streets of Rage 2 may be a decent alternative, but it doesn't have Mike Haggar. :)

N+ on XBLA this Wednesday (the 20th)!! YES!!!!!!!

Seriously, it’s been killing us to keep all the news about N+ quiet. We have really big mouths, and it’s hard to shut that down. But, finally, we’re FINALLY allowed to share the good news with everyone. N+ will be available for download for 800 points on this Wednesday, February 20th, at 9am PST. Yay!We feel like maybe there’s not as much buzz as there could have been, but the orders to keep it all under our collective hat came from Microsoft’s marketing department, and presumably they know a lot more about this sort of thing than we do. ;)

At this point we’re completely anxious, worried that it’s too hard and no one will buy it because the graphics are so minimal and stylized (though stylish), and after struggling with the demo for the hypothetical 3 minutes you have before people get bored, they’ll give up instead of pushing on and finding their inner ninja. All we can do is hope people will see/play past all that and get incurably addicted. And then addict their friends! ;)

There are also a couple sets of really cool gamerpics and themes in the LIVE Marketplace — we would have liked to put them up for free, but this is apparently against policy. It *is* a bit frustrating: it seems silly to us that gamers have to pay for something entirely superficial and not even part of the game! In any case, we’ll try to have preview pics up on Wednesday, so at least you can see what you’ll be getting. There will also be one or two level packs coming in the future, though we don’t really know the timing for that yet.. but we figure 450 levels should keep everyone busy for a while ;)

The GDC is looking like it’s going to be great. Raigan’s got a presentation on Monday, and Mare and Nick are doing the N+ XBLA post-mortem on Tuesday, so we’ve still got some work to do.. but we can’t wait for Wednesday!

Late to the Story: Blood Bowl is an XBLA Release

Blood Bowl is a game that us here at XBLArcade.com have been looking forward to since it's announcement; unfortunately, we completely missed the boat on Cyanide telling OXM UK that the title is an Xbox Live Arcade release (thanks badgenome). Blood Bowl is a remake of a classic board game which is a take on American football. Think Mutant League Football or Speedball with orcs. The game will feature both real-time and turned based, traditional control of your players.

Really sucks how MS won't allow for free gamerpics of XBLA titles. They need all the marketing they can get, and free GPs would be great for that.

It would make sense to allow for ONE free gamerpic for each game for marketing's sake. It just makes sense.

To be clear, I mean for pre-release, to build pre-release hype. A relevant example is how Sony had various Drake gamerpics available for free since soon after the PS3 launch, and I'm sure that helped expose Uncharted as many people would adopt it.

yeah seems odd that they do have one or two free gamerpics for each new title, but you can only get them if you buy the full game
 
Just saw this topic pop back up. Any idea on which month Ikaruga is coming out? Next week would be awesome as I have time off, but any time in the near future would be nice.

You know what shits me more than paying for gamerpics? YOU CANT SEE WHAT THE FUCK YOU ARE BUYING.

It's the most retarded thing I have ever seen in the world. Things like this make me believe that if Sony comes out with an achievement and profile system that is on par with MS, and INFORMS the player what they are getting, Microsoft will be fucked. I'm hoping it happens too.

I know...I made the mistake of buying an EA Sports FIFA pack, that promised to have "North American Flags" of North American nations, I thought hey I'll get a Canadian flag GP. I buy it, and I get every single flag of every North American nation except Canada. :P

It seems that most of them nowadays are featuring pics of what you are going to buy, but not all. So for me, no pic, no sale, no matter what the description says. Sure, there are sites that show you what it is, but hey, I can't surf the net from the 360...

Though not officially announced yet according to developer Little Boy Games' website, we had a chance to pick up and try out Go! Go! Break Steady at the XNA bar in Moscone Center North. The rhythm game is reminiscent -- in both gameplay and title -- of Boom! Boom! Rocket. We picked our character (the bespectacled brothah on the left in the above picture) and proceeded to press the according buttons and as they quickly scrolled from right to left on the screen. One mistake would result in a failure for that sequence and we'd be told to "try again" with a new, somewhat easier sequence.

We didn't fare too well with the game; more often than not, our avatar fell on his butt in disgrace. (In our defense, the music volume was very low and drowned by the adjacent console playing Mass Effect.) We wish the buttons that scrolled on the screen also had corresponding arrows; dance pad compatibility would add to the replayability, as would guitar and drum controller support. It's hard to make a judgment given the lack of music, which will ultimately make or break the game. Go! Go! Break Steady is being planned for release this year.

360Sync at GDC: N+ Interview and Day 1 Recap

GDC Day 1 brings news that NinjaBee's Doritos game will be light on the advertising. And thankfully, they decided to code in the fun after previous complaints. Also, Freeverse mentioned that DLC is on the way for Marathon.

And apparently the best advice for those getting stuck on levels in N+ is go and have a beer and come back later. Law willing, of course. Oh, and DLC is coming for N+ too. Without further ado, here's the N+ interview.

Poker Smash seems to be a big success, two weeks in a row at #1 now. Discs of Tron on the other hand, had one of the lowest debuts (I think) of any XBLA game at #6.
 
So appreantly an XBLA Version of Fable 2 is going to debut before the disc-based game according to the Microsoft GDC thread.

He's going to show us a game called JellyCar. It's about physics and soft body something or other. "It's Tonka Toys meets Jello." Looks good. XNA Game Studio is also a great cross-platform tool, he points out. They're showing a testbed game from Redmond running on the PC. Apparently it's really easy to move it between the two. "Wouldn't it be even better if you could take this mobile?"

He's going to show us what that looks like. Zauri, the game we just saw, pops up. You move the ship around with the touch-pad thing, and it looks exactly the same. You can even play music from your Zune at the same time. "This is my marketing director's Zune...Mine's in my pocket."

While it's great that Microsoft announce new XBLA games at every conference going, there are still a ton of games that we've yet to see.

Gamespot has a new hands-on preview of Bionic Commando: Rearmed

SAN FRANCISCO--Longtime action fans have known for years that the nearly two-decades-old Bionic Commando is a series sorely overdue for revival. Capcom agreed, clearly; the company is collaborating with Swedish developer Grin to create a modern 3D adaptation of the hallowed platformer on current consoles. As if that weren't enough, Grin is also working on a feature-packed love letter to Bionic Commando fans with a new downloadable remake of the game subtitled Rearmed, which we got to try out at Capcom's demo suite off the GDC show floor. Even after only a few minutes with the game, we're confident in saying that anyone with even a passing affection for the old Bionic Commando will want to keep a close eye on this game when it lands on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network in the May to June timeframe.

Everything about this remake looks faithful to the original, from the numbered world map to the visual aesthetics and layout of the levels. In the communication centers--where you contact your agents deep in the field--you'll see newly drawn 2D portraits of the soldiers you're talking to, just like in the NES version. Even the arm-swinging physics feel right on point, so if the timings involved in swinging from lamppost to lamppost are permanently imprinted on your neural pathways (as they are with any BC fan worth his or her salt, let's face it), you'll be able to jump right in here and start fighting back against the Imperials in no time. There's one new arm-related move called the side swing, which lets you grab a grapple point directly in front of you while falling to get some extra distance out of your swing.

Speaking of bosses, Capcom producer and professed BC nut Ben Judd admits that they were lousy in the original game, so the designers at Grin have gone back and added more creative and challenging boss encounters to the mission. We saw the first boss, called the beetle, which was a flying spheroid robot with various guns and shielding. The trick here was to grab a barrel with our bionic arm, hurl it at the beetle to drop it to the ground, then blast away at its exposed weak spot before it got back into the air. In the co-op version of this fight, the boss was able to move its shield around, making both players coordinate to throw barrels high and low to strike the right spot.

Rearmed even has a 50-plus-level challenge mode which Judd likens to Metal Gear Solid's VR missions, due to their wireframe, virtual reality-like appearance and their focus on quick, simple action-related tasks. From what we could tell, all of the challenges will focus on the swinging mechanic; specifically, most of them just want you to get from point A to point B. The problem is what lies in between, which mostly consists of sparsely distributed grapple points and platforms over spike traps and bottomless pits. Judd says the later stages will become so complicated that figuring out how to pass them will be more like solving a puzzle than playing a simple action stage.
