OG Xbox Appreciation and Lack of Emulation Thread of the big black box of doom

The Xbox sure is paying off. I realized last year that my dislike of the system was stupid. Now I'm in the hunt for the best ports that Xbox got. Living it up with high res graphics now like:

You...disliked...the Xbox?=O

I loved it even when it was 1st out, and tend to get multiplats on it more than PS2 and Gamecube.=p

I didn't like how the console looked. It's still ridiculous that a company would release a box literally in the shape of a letter. But eh... I can ignore it when the games look this good.

Can someone explain the rendering resolution difference (assuming there is one) between Soul Calibur II on OG Xbox that can run in 720p with black boarders on all sides (in a 'window') and Soul Calibur II on Xbox 360 XBLA / PS3 PSN which runs in normal widescreen 720p

OG Xbox (60fps) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXDL87J1fJQ

Xbox 360 (60fps) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DSbm1JD3tM

As best as I can tell from the YT video, the OG version ran native @ 896*672 within the black borders there.

Huh... I just saw on one of my google adventures that the Xbox got a port of shadow of destiny. It's called shadow of memories, and I think it's limited to PAL region? Is it worth importing? Does it run in higher resolution?

The PS2 version is fun, but the video quality is straight up ass.

Awe, man... just had a power supply blow up on a 1.1 Xbox. I'd read previously that FoxLinks were garbage, but this it the first power supply I've actually had fail on me.

Correct; it's a European Exclusive on the Xbox. I imported this game a while ago (so I obviously felt it was worth it), but have yet to play it. It's 480p (PS2 version's 480i).

Thank you! Looks like I'll have to import it.

I just finished Morrowind today! I got about 2/3 of the way through the main quest line back when Morrowind first came out and stopped playing. I probably got into a big time sink online game like PSO, PGR2 or Halo 2 online. Anyways, my save was from April 2003. It has always bugged me that I never finished Morrowind. Fast forward to January 2016 and I pop in my Morrowind disc into ye olde Xbox and I get my game on! I read through all 174 pages of my journal to get back up to speed, and finish of the Imperial Legion quest line and then finish off the main quest line and defeat Dagoth Ur! Woot! Feels good to finally slay the beast after all these years.

Excellent! I played Morrowind back at release, loved the world but hated the combat.

Stuff like this makes me wishing that consumer electronics manufacturers would rely on a single standard for psu:s

The xbox memory card is the most useless thing ever. Every game save is either too big for it or copy protected lol

Thought i'd get it to back up saves, but its completely useless

So I've been doing some Google spelunking while searching for DAC info in different Xbox revisions, and thought this might help with the psu questions going on here.

Replacing a blown Xbox fuse

Guide for a dead PSU fuse replacement.

Replacing a PSU from one model to another

Mobile browser am cry.

Thanks man. I ordered a universal power supply from China as I believe the only option for a 1.0/1.1 PSU is another FoxLink (yeah, well Fox dat). I'll let y'all know how it works. The only review I could find alleged to some "color distortions," so I'm hoping it was an isolated incident/user error.

Went to the retro shop earlier, and came back with Voodoo Vince and Silent Hill 2 for 10 bucks each.

I think I'll replace my GC and PS2 multiplat games in favor of Xbox versions now. I'll just sell off my my original versions.

Good pickup on Silent Hill 2. It's on my need-to-find list ;)

That's pretty much how I am with multiplats from that gen.

Did Konami skip SH3 on Xbox? So odd that SH2 and 4 are ported, 3 was just left hanging. Good thing I have the PC versions at least.

Yeah, it just makes sense. Get the superior version and call it a day. No need to pad out your collection with redundant ports.

Yep, not sure why though.

It also makes it easy to find which version I would need to guarantee 480p support(or 720p with some Xbox games), though I would use Nintendon't for Gamecube games that weren't 480p at 1st but are with that program.

There's also sound quality to consider. Even if a cube port has the same graphics as on Xbox, chances are the audio is less compressed on Xbox.

Always Xbox for multi-plats & Voodoo Vince is fun. Good pickup.

I seem to remember reading that SH2 Xbox is missing some effects from the ps2 version, fwiw

it does have the extra stuff, which is only in the GH version of SH2 PS2.

Well, shit. I did some googling, and there's a few issues. Even with the PC version. Terrible low quality audio being the worst. The Xbox and PC version have better flashlight lighting, but have hard shadows. They also have simpler fog, but it's still worlds better than the HD "remaster" (plus a little more clarity can't hurt).

The graphical effect issues sound kinda minor, but the low quality audio problem is one I'd be more concerned about.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
2X was 60fps? I don't remember that! I bought it in the US when I was on a trip there and was super bummed when I couldn't play it until I modded my machine. Was never released on PAL :(

Yeah, a lot of people seem to forget how much of an upgrade 2x was over the previous releases. It's the only version that runs at 60fps (Dreamcast was still 30), and the graphics were significantly improved, particularly with the textures.

My only complaint with it is that it didn't add the THPS1 soundtrack in. They had the THPS1 courses, which kinda suck... wish we could've gotten the part of that game that still mattered.

I pulled the trigger on a PAL copy of Shadow of Memories. Never thought I'd be importing a PAL game. This is a first for me. Now I really need to figure a good way to mod my Xbox to play other regions.

Finally got a copy of Otogi 2 tonight for a decent price and in good condition. Now to find the time to play it :)

You won't regret making the time for it!

I replayed both Otogi 1 and 2 this past week. Before I thought I like 1 better, but I was smoking crack, apparently. 1 is great, but 2 is just better in every respect. And the final boss fights in 2 are just fucking gorgeous. The last boss can be a serious dick though.

Anyone care to help me out with some weird issues my Xbox has?

1) The disc tray doesn't like to pop out most of the time. I can kinda fiddle with it (like shake the tray front back and forth) and try again and usually after the 2nd or 3rd try it works, but it's pretty annoying.

2) The power sometimes just cuts out randomly. And by randomly, I mean usually around 3 - 10 mins after powering it on for the first time in a while, and then never again most of the time. Most of the time... but sometimes it'll just cut out after a while anyway. Does this seem like a PSU issue? Or is there some way to fix it?

3) The component output seems to have died. I'm not sure if it's the cable or what, but has anyone heard of the output on the console side failing? I only noticed this after powering it on for the first time in like a year a few months ago, but my cable has been safely stowed so I'm not sure what's going on.

If anyone has any tips for any of these problems I'd be very happy to hear it.

My tip would be to get a new xbox because that shit's fucked up. The only one that's easy to figure out is the disc tray. Either the rubber band in the drive needs replaced or the electromagnetic thing that's responsible for holding the disc in place is worn out.

I started pricing them on ebay after writing this up. I figured shipping would be brutal but it's not so bad.

I just don't want to go through the trouble of softmodding an original xbox in 2016... I have to assume half the utilities and links that existed years ago are long gone. Plus my xbox is the crystal one which looks so nice.

Can't you swap the casing? And your xbox sounds jacked.

Hello OG Xboxers :)

I recently picked up my first Xbox last week with Outrun and soft-modded it. Just popping in to see what I can do with it now. Tempted to slap a 500GB hard drive in it.

Easiest fix for all those problems is to swap out your internals for those of a working unit.

On a single issue basis the original hardware could be fixed easily for the PSU and the disc tray. The component output could be more serious, but if you could find either another Xbox to test your cables on or another component cable to test on the same Xbox it'd be better to tell what may be the problem. I know that heat was an issue with earlier video encorders in the Xbox, but it could just be something more simple like a dirty AV port on your unit.

Thomson had the highest fail rate I believe when compared to all the versions of Xbox DVD drives.

I would recommend just buying a new one from eBay. Go with Philips if the price is good! And yes, any Xbox DVD drive can be swapped in.

That's what I will do then. Thanks!

Just won't read any disks. But from googling around seems I can just replace the drive? Would like to avoid another Thompson, can I just buy a philips or samsung model off eBay and replace it? Or does the model have to be the same?

My gut tells me these "dead" drives aren't quite dead. I'd like to look into some of these failure prone drives... If I can find some failed drives cheap or free I'd like to see if I could get them back up and running.

All too often people declare drives as "dead", but in the majority of cases it's just people not being bothered enough to do some basic maintenance...

Drive opens and otherwise works fine, just won't read any disks. I assume that is related to the laser.

I had a similar issue with a PS2 last week.

It wouldn't play any music CDs. Game discs work fine. I watched a video about how to clean the PS2, and I did take a q-tip with a light amount of windex on it, and gently brushed the top of the laser.

After I put the PS2 back together, it played 3 out of 4 music CDs. So, that did work. Check to see if there are any videos on how to clean a original Xbox.
