My experience is that the framerate on many games are atrocious played on a 360, so definitely not.
It depends more on the game really as various games I played were fine on it.
Is there really anything to this or is it randomly generated?
It's random in that the names are randomy assigned to xboxes, not random in that it'll stay the same and won't change between reboots.
Apparently dead or alive 3 lets you rename the xbox.
Having a hacked or softmodded system will also allow you to change the name.
My OG Xbox's name was King
and my 360's name was Jack.

I remember Outrun 2 and Jet Set Radio Future also had some major issues.
The BC on the 360 is just useless. It's one of those systems where there's no option but to just buy the real deal.
I wouldn't go that far, though a lot of games do have problems. Just pick the right game, look up the few to no issues it has and it'll be fine. Of course you have to look hard for that through wiki.

Some games have some minor issues, they get blown out of proportion by some gamers. You get better IQ on the games, they are upscaled and the majority of games you would want to play are supported.
I think now is the best time to collect Xbox (Not to mention 360) games cause I rarely see used complete copies of single games go for more than $40. A complete in case copy of KOTOR goes for at least $15 compared to say the original Final Fantasy for the NES where you'd be hard pressed to find it CIB for less than $60. And let's not go there with CIB Super Nintendo RPGs.
Well yeah. If you want to be That Guy saying "I got Gunvalkyrie for $10 in 2015 and now it's going for $80!!!" in 10 years. The Xbox (and to a lesser extent the PS2) are undoubtely the best system to get games for.
Though I doubt the Xbox will ever get a quarter as expensive as the SUper Nintendo, Saturn et all, for various reasons.
It's cause the OG Xbox is not commonly considered to be a system people remember as having a cool library (even though it certainly does). It was stuck in a weird place in time and thus people don't necessarily consider it a retro console. I basically own one for like 4 games but it's so worth it.
XBOX is already on the rise lateley. Games are still cheap but actual hardware has gone up for some reason. I remember picking up bare systems for 10 bucks and complete systems with varuois games for $25 just last year on CL. Nowadays everyone wants $40-$100 for a console and up to $200 for complete console plus shitty to decent games. lol
Yet somehow I still see SH2 priced between 15-20 at my local shops and they still don't sell... WTF are people playing on their $60 Xbox that only came with composite cables and a duke controller? lol

Hardware for the Xbox has been expensive for a while now. At least the last 2-3 years. Not sure what's caused it, though, particularly since it hasn't been accompanied by a rise in software prices. I seem to recall the official component cables being pretty pricey, as well... obviously, nothing near the GC cables, though.

Have a few questions for you guys. Really in need of help!
1. Should I remove the time capacitor from my console? Its not plugged in and I haven't used it in a long time.
2. Is replacing the HDD as simple as unplugging it, unscrewing it, and swapping it out? What kind of formatting would I have to do upon booting the console?
My XBox is still stock. I'm thinking to go pay a local shop to do all this for me so I don't have to worry. Thanks!

I'm suspecting Super Mario Bros. on the XBMC emulators. I believe the systems are going up in price because people mod them.
Just my name. Although I got a Halo Edition Xbox on Ebay and it's named Destroy. Has a lot of mid 00s teenage-core on it and the profile names tend to be named after WWE wrestlers. I keep it all on there since it gives the Xbox some history and fits with the time when the Xbox was new.
Hooked up my XBox for the first time in a decade and decided I will take a little break from cart based collecting/playing and start on this big bad boy.
All of my XBox stuff has been moved at least 4 times in the past 10 years, so not everything was easy to find and made me really hate the break away cords they used (could only find three ends, even with 6 controllers). Turned the system on and hit the eject button and the disk tray was stuck. Did what everyone should do, smacked the top of the system when I heard it trying to come out and it opened. No problems since on that end.
On to playing, checking out the games I picked up and wanted to make sure they work. Nightcaster was the first one and it is ok. It is a pretty generic looking game, boasts 35+ enemy types, but so far they have all been pretty lame (wolf, crown thing, blob thing and rat maybe) and each has an element that they are resistant to and weak to depending on their color. So you just chose your spell and attack them (Fire, Water, Light and Dark). The one thing I really was liking about the game is that the spell has a 'crosshair' that puts the camera overhead if you move it, making the game almost like a dual stick shooter. You do have a limit on spells that you can cast at once, so you can't just spam it, but in the first two levels there hasn't been any major challenges. The story is fairly boring about the Nightcaster being in town, and the VA is not great. Probably won't play too much more.
Played some PGR2 as well. That game still is really good. The progression through the game is great for people who don't play a lot of racing games. The graphics still look decent and the bonus game in the garage makes the game worth more than I paid for it (paid $4 CIB with shipping, Geometry Wars I think is still like $5 on 360)
Than decided to go to my collection. Pulled out Outrun 2 to play it some more. Game is so good, just an updated Outrun, but I really enjoy it. That put me in the mode for Crazy Taxi 3. Man, that game was better in my memories. The load times are horrible, took like 5 minutes to load to the main menu (don't know if I had a profile on the XBox, pretty sure I did, but maybe it had to make one) and it is 30 seconds to a minute to load up the course. The loading screens tell you to do a Crazy Drift and a Crazy Dash, but doesn't tell you how to do them. I'll play it some more, but don't think I liked any of the maps as much as the DC maps.
Looking forward to putting in some work on the XBox and getting the rest of the games I want for my collection. Currently have about 50, and added about 60 to my 'get list' Crazy how many of them I can find sealed for less than $20, not like collecting on the consoles I have been.

I'm running to the local Disc Replay today because they have a TON of OG Xbox games that I've never even heard of...
I've asked before, but what kind of cables should I look to get? They should have a set there, but if not, can I find them at any other store? Or do I need to hit up Amazon/eBay?
Also, how easy/hard is it to mod the OG Xbox?

theisozone is pretty solid source for OG Xbox.
There's a YouTube video by TwoBunny that explains how to softmod in great detail.
You want OEM Component cables. 3rd party's shit. If they have them, they typically go for $30-$50 (depending on availability). These, plus disabling flicker / blur, make a HUGE difference visually (and unlock 720p for a handful of games).
Monster cables are good.
Monsters are just as good, if not better in some minor ways. Tighter plugs and gold plating are nice. Internally they're nothing special, but they are well assembled just as with OEMs.
Yeh, I have IXOS cables, they're very good. Same kind of build quality as Monster too.
I'm aware as I've mentioned them as the exception before. Just neglected to mention them this time around.
The "tighter" plugs is a downside as they put unnecessary wear on the component inputs. The OEM cables are plenty tight as is.
I avoid the issue of potentially damaging my device's hard wired plugs by using small extensions which are also tight, but I never have to remove them.

I use Psyclone, pretty heavy, HQ cables as well. Never observed visual deficits.

After over 12 years of faithful service my OG XBOX has been packed up, sealed, and moved to the basement storage for a time when I will have more room for nostalgia and hobbies in my life.. It was kind of hearbreaking...
They're related to the monster ones somehow. Like, I think one company took over distribution after the other. If you compare them, they're the exact same cable. Just different branding.

So my OG Xbox died the other day. Freezed during gameplay and then when I restarted the console it gives me the "Christmas Lights" (blinking red and green lights) on the front and goes to a screen that says to contact Microsoft Tech Support. Anyone know if this is a simple fix? The Xbox still powers on but just gives me that error now. I read somewhere that I may have to open it up and just reconnect the HD and a ribbon cable but I wanted to know if anyone else knows how to solve this. Thanks!
That's usually the light I get when I purposefully or accidentally don't reconnect either the HDD or the DVD drive back onto the mobo. So yeah just open it up and play with the ribbon cable for a bit. It's easy.

I would like to archive all my games so they will get captured in my normal PC backup. Is it as simple as FTPing the games off the hard drive of my X-box?

So I ended up disconnecting all the cables I could see and reconnecting them but I still get the christmas lights error. Any other ideas what might be wrong? I'm bummed because I have a Japanese Xbox to play Metal Wolf Chaos and now I can't play it and I'm worried about losing my save.

Regarding the issue, I don't know if it'll help much but usually there's some kind of error code number that displays when the system can't boot to the dashboard. There's supposed to be multiple and I know I ran into at least two when I botched a hard drive upgrade on my previous console. Don't know if it'll fix things, especially if you've already tried reconnecting the cables and stuff, but it might explain things a bit more.So I ended up disconnecting all the cables I could see and reconnecting them but I still get the christmas lights error.
