OG Xbox Appreciation and Lack of Emulation Thread of the big black box of doom

Is there an easy and/or cost effective way to hook Xbox up to a PC monitor? I have the component AV cable and would like to hook it up to a PC monitor via VGA or HDMI.

How much effort or money you are willing to put in will yield different results. It's pretty simple to convert component to HDMI (any AV receiver will do that and there are cheap boxes) but the results aren't great.

There are cheap native VGA solutions but they require some work and all involve flashing a new BIOS.

If you are okay spending some money, there's the XRGB Mini (Framemeister). I can't vouch for it but it's got a great reputation for upscaling.

Hope this helps.

The Mayflash or the Garo are two cheap solutions to connect via vga, I posted some pros and cons about them here.

The attenuator part of that post is wrong but I've not seen a single desynch with the xbox so you might be able to get by just on the mayflash device.

I think I need to reevaluate my opinion of RSC2's ice racing style.

Overall I still think RSC1's clean white snow with objects that pop in RBY primaries is a more attractive look, but a few of the RSC2 ice courses really don't look half bad.

If only RSC2's replays were also 60fps...

It's a damn shame that DICE got turned into nothing but a battlefield production company. Would have loved more rally games from them.

Anyone fiddled much with this?

Generic tool to modify XBE's to allow widescreen and 720p support. Results vary, I tried Metal Wolf Chaos, widescreen didn't work and 720p crashed entering gameplay. Wonder if it works better on a 128MB RAM Xbox. Exciting work either way.

PS2Wide also have a ton of widescreen hacks, super impressive work.

I toyed with it quite a bit. The mods on PS2wide are solid. They'll provide a compressed 640x480 image which can then be expanded to an accurately scaled 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen). Because the res is the same, performance is solid.

There are a handful of games that run well enough to be candidates for possibly bumping up to a higher resolution, but even the ones that "work" suffer from performance issues.

Think the best example thus far is Jet Set Radio Future. A member on theisozone got it to run 720p, though it dropped frames throughout (totally "playable" though). I got the first level of Metal Arms: Glitch in the System to run in 720p. Ran like a champ and only slowed down slightly at a scripted explosion (which occurs even at 480p). Despite this, the game crashed upon loading level 2. Unable to test it further. XIII showed promise, but there's an issue with the cell-shading which makes the game unplayable/undesirable.

those issues might be due to limited RAM ?

as Dwayne said, maybe with 128Mb RAM the Xbox can better handle 720p or 16:9

I think games need to be programmed to address that RAM. It's mainly just for Virtua Cop 3, Ghost Squad and MAME.

You can upgrade the CPU on the Xbox and that might make some 720p xbe patches run better but it's not something I have looked into a whole lot because desoldering a CPU and putting a new one in is way above my skill level and even if I could do it, I don't have the highly specialised equipment that's required (I'm fairly sure it can't be done by hand).

I'm finally playing Xbox games in 720p for the 1st time ever...wow, this is crazy for a 2001 console.
By modding/editing or the OG 720p games? I bought X-Men Legends just to play an OG Xbox game in 720p lol. It does look amazing given the console's age!

OG 720p games, I don't mess with editing or anything like that. I tried with Freedom Fighters and hope to do so with more games.

I love RSC2! It's the sole reason I bought an OG Xbox again. I need to get back to it!

Nice! Even in 480p I think OG Xbox games look great on my plasma. I'm terrible at Ninja Gaiden Black but it looks great!

Hey, I asked this in the current topic on Gaming side but then I saw this thread. Was there a Gameshark/Action Replay for the original Xbox? I've been looking at some original Xbox games and wondering if there's any way to skip the unlocking grind on something like Timesplitters 2.

Is there also any good way to backup original Xbox game saves? It sucks how you can't copy them on 360 without a complete hard drive transfer.

Yep, there was.

I wonder, are 720p games on Xbox actually full 720p? That would mean they're higher res than many Xbox 360 and PS3 games.

So I just got an Xbox again, through a friend and I'm trying to find the official MS branded component cables, but seems like a pain to find and when I do, they are pricey.

Any recommendations for third party cables that perform decently?

or if anyone is selling any, that'd be cool too! :)

Monster cables.

This one I use works fine.

Wait, really?
Lol

Didn't know it was that many.
Yeah it surprised me as well. I should get them and test them.

Somehow, none of them were any of the games I like. Of course.
What about Freedom Fighters, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4, Tony Hawk Underground 1 and 2, Amped 2, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, The Warriors, True Crime: Streets of LA, Scarface, Crash Nitro Kart, Evil Dead: Regeneration, X-Men Legends 1 and 2?

So all the talk about Skyrim coming to the Switch, has made me curious about going back and playing the superior (imo) Morrowind. Is the Xbox-port decent? Or should i stick to PC? Only own a laptop these days, that i dont really like to play on, so would love if it the Xbox-port was considered decent.

Its amazing, IMO. Pulled at least 500 hours on it back in the day. Just make sure you get the GOTY edition, it has the expansions.

You could use HDMI out on your laptop to play it on another screen.

It still cracks me up the way Morrowind can be completed in less than 5 minutes.

Just replayed BLACK; it wasn't as good as I remember. Definitely influenced later games (Call of Duty, BattleField, etc.), but the story is almost non existent, and the gameplay is mediocre. Impactful game, but really not worth going back to.

PC with mods of course is the way to go for Morrowind. I recently compared Xbox Morrowind to vanilla PC Morrowind and for me personally, I liked the look of the Xbox version more. They are really close, but the Xbox version looks a little muddier than the cleaner looking PC version. What I like better about the Xbox version is the water, bloom effects and some of the brightly neon colored objects and weapons. I like the way the Xbox does water, slick looking surfaces and neon colored objects and surfaces. For example, I love the look of Covenant blood and and the neon colored Covenant levels and ships on the Xbox in the original Halo.

Okay, I need help. Tried to softmod my machine, no good, bought another mod chipped machine, the moron had deleted the dashboard and make it an XBMC only box, and the drive appeared to be almost dead on that one too.

Would anyone here be able to help me out with an original PAL Xbox softmod USB? I have Splinter cell and a USB to controller port adapter, I just need a compatible USB with the exploit on it. All the tools are in ancient versions of Windows and I only have an OSX machines (and windows emulation tools like wine don't work either). I just want 480p :(

Sorry guys I didn't really want advice, I just wanted someone to sell me a USB with the PAL exploit pre-installed.

I did some rearranging today, i'm about 10 games shy of finishing my xbox 1 and maybe 40 for 360 but, I moved them all to their own wall and flipped games front/center to take up space until more future things go there, figured I liked it enough to picture it :P

I believe something like 1000 between the 2 and about 450 for the OG Xbox, quite a beast for such a short life span.

That's a truly amazing collection!! I'm so jealous, I'd pay just to walk in the room and look at the shelves, especially at the OG Xbox stuff!!

I didnt even realize there were that many systems to collect for. God damn. I knew from selling to you before that you were no slouch but I'm still amazed. lol

I didn't either, off hand you have something like 12 or so Nintendo systems, 7 Sega systems, 6 Sony systems, 3 MS systems, and then stuff like the old Atari era stuff along with obscure things, Neo Geo and such, it adds up before you even realize it :P
