A TEARFUL David Blunkett resigned as Home Secretary last night after an official inquiry found that his office had — after all — intervened in fast-tracking the visa application of his former lover’s nanny.

After weeks of insisting that there had been no wrongdoing, Mr Blunkett stepped down after being told by Sir Alan Budd that he had discovered a fax and an e-mail through Mr Blunkett’s office discussing the case of Leoncia Casalme, Kimberly Quinn’s nanny, with immigration officials. The paper trail had led directly to his office.

It was a huge blow for Tony Blair, who regarded Mr Blunkett as one of his most valuable electoral weapons and who backed him to the hilt despite the reservations of colleagues. It was an even bigger personal tragedy for Mr Blunkett, whose life is politics and whose career has been brought to an end because of his acrimonious parting with Mrs Quinn and his subsequent attempt to gain access to her son William, whom he said last night was his son.
