Oh, so YOU'RE the computer guy.....

Oh well. Maybe I am a douche in RL. You try being charged to defend a shitty network you have no control over for your livelihood. Eh, whaddayagonnado?

I'd start looking for a different job, because it looks like the lack of control you have in your work environment is turning you into a standard issue corporate asshole.

Haha, I hope an admin does a whois on his work IP and sends a link to this thread to his company's HR department. :lol

Bashing your company's network security while logged into an Internet forum AT work. Yeah, that's intelligent. Also, it's easy to be the surly "everything around here sucks" IT guy. Try something more original. I'll be highly disappointed if this thread doesn't earn you some sort of tag.

If it weren't for people fucking off at work, you wouldn't have anyone to tell your power trip stories to.

Wow - that's hilarious! :lol

You're totally right - Mr. Myth here is being pals with us on GAF - but - if someone checked this thread from the office next door to his, he would rain down fire and brimstone on their ass.

Team Leader don't mean anything, mate.

Oh no - Gereth (or Garth or whatever his name was) from the Office :lol

I swear - the British version of that show is one of the most realistic depictions of corporate life that I have ever witnessed.

I'm sort with mrmyth on this one. If the boss found out people were using the internet for leisure the onus would be on the IT department for not stopping (since most people know this can be done) it and not only the individual. I am in a similar posistion to mrmyth.

That being said I wouldn't of got him fired. I'd just tell him that at the end of conversation, that I was the 'stupid as fuck' IT guy. The reason we didn't restrict access is that we believe that our employees do the right thing as well as we believe in FREEDOM. Then I'd tell him not to do it again. The face of suprise and guilt would be priceless.

This is the point though - I don't think anyone is saying that the loser employee should be allowed to use Yahoo and oggle Jenna Jameson at work.

The problem is that Mr. Myth is talking about getting the guy fired, after basically entrapping him to go to a porn site. If he had come on here and asked for advice on how to f with the loser employee, I'm sure he would have gotten all kinds of humorous responses. Instead, he comes off as someone who is actually enjoying getting another person fired.

Any IT dept that trusts the end user not to access foolishness while at work is retarded.

We have our network at UPS locked down. I can get out of the proxy since Im an admin but very few people can and thats how it should be. People 8/10 will not do the right thing and thats why you must secure your network.

Stopping the user > Trusting the user. :lol

Thing is, the guy is still on probation. All new hires are for 3 months. He can be let go any time for any reason during that period. So would any of you log on to a porn site within two weeks of starting a new job? He deserves what he gets, whether I'm being a douche or not. And once again, its my job to report this stuff. Even the harmless Yahoo, MSN chat. I'll just keep being a short, fat, balding, Napoleonic corporate douche prick, cause its in my job description. I get busted, then I get busted. I will have deserved it too.

We'll reading his post it's not like the guy was simply pointing out that he could do whatever he pleased but rather being a dick about it, which I would probably take it personally too. If I was in a posistion where my company offered unrestrained internet access I wouldn't be a asshole about it and be thankful I'm not under the control of some Nazi admin and play my cards straight.

You suggested he try a porn site. You should be in just as much trouble as he gets.
But yeah, you took a job that pays you for being an asshole. Surprise that you are.

whats so bad about chatting online? Hell, even porn? Porn, I guess, Is at least distracting to others around you, but anything else I just can't understand.

If the person gets all the work done that is expected of them by the deadlines that is expected of them, why the hell does it matter?

Good point Red Scarlet. Mymyth should have never suggested a porn site. It's just as much your fault for suggesting it as it is his for going to one.

No he didn't, he asked if 'they' blocked porn. The guy could of said no and left it as that but instead demonstrated.

Only thing worse than a narcisstic admin is a narcisstic employee who thinks they can get away with anything.

That being said mrmyth is a pretty lousy admin for atleast not setting up the basics.

The image the department uses is as locked as the IT heads will allow. Public terminals/terminals within reach of customers get the lockdown treatment. Office computers are to be left open. Shit you not, a user with a disability actually sued when the internet access was blocked on only their PC. IT/HR will not allow the grounds for another discrimination lawsuit to happen.
There are legitimate sites the users utilize as part of their work. There's casual surfing going on, mostly during people's lunches. If I reported every event I'd get nothing else done. Chat is considered something that takes focus away from work, so its offlimits.

I probably would of done the exact same thing if I was in that position :lol

The employee was told he can't do this stuff. He did it anyway. He got cocky about it when he was caught. He was disrepectfull of the workplace rules that were laid out for him when he was hired.

Myth just asked him if he could access porn sites; the employee still took the insentive to show him that it was possible. If the employee was smart he should of told MrMyth that he isn't allowed to go to those sites at work, directly answer the question, or lie and reply that he didn't know. It's the employees fault if he gets fired.

you are a fuckin asswipe...you cant do your job, and now are getting him fired..

go get training to do your fuckin job

So basically you got the order form high above? Still I'd put a case to atleast do some basic blocking on employee web access since that can become a security issue.

^ I'm guessing someone got fired when he was caught surfing porn on company time. Oh boo hoo.

The honor-system doesn't work when it comes to employees who feel they're wiser than the IT dept. The guy in charge of IT probably realizes that but doesn't take any measures to prevent the employees from doing so.

LOL I kinda have a mental image of mrmyth in my head, it goes something like thios with him looking like this:

026%20Lucky%20nerd.jpg

*In a nasal voice*

"Hi I'm mrmyth I am superdupedly distraught that I have gotten laid -1 times in my life that I must be a goody two shoes snitch and report people doing things they're not supposed to be doing while wanking off to females I know I will never get and posting on GAF during my work hours"

haha you guess wrong, if you read the thread you would realize the guy reporting him, also abuses the internet @ work

That was quite some time ago who knows if he was working for them then anyway he's a hypocrite but he's a hypocrite with power and that's all that matters in all honesty.

He may abuse it, but does he break the rules? ;) the employee knew that Yahoo messanger wasn't allowed and he did it anyway. Browsing during downtime may be perfectly fine, but browsing porn sites are definatly on the naughty list. The only true way to know is if we all had a copy of the employee handbook which most likely isn't going to happen.

If we all worked there I'm sure there'd be quite a few of us who would also be fired :D

That's pretty evil.

That said, I never did understand the porn at work thing, unless someone really wants to be fired. Can't wait until you get home? That's a problem.

While the guy was breaking company policy, it does sound like you are the kind of person who'd rather hit someone over the head than help them do the right thing.

Please tell me you didn't complain about "mean teachers" when you were in high school. Please.

Nice Mr Myth....

You're screwing around at work making a virtual bartender move her ass, and you're going to get a guy canned for chatting on IM and accessing a porn site.

Man - I couldn't live with myself if I pulled that trigger.....

Why would every single post I've ever made be from work? How do you know that one was?

What kinda fucking bizarro world am I in that looking at PORN at work is no big deal?

BTW- loving the mental image and all the appearance attacks. Like we all aren't POSTING ON A VIDEOGAME FORUM ON THE INTERNET.

HURF HURF HURF THAT PUNKBITCH IS LOOKING IMS ON COMPANY TIME! UR FIRED...FAMILY? FUK DAT I GOTTA EAT

NOW TO TELL GAF ABOUT MY ACCOMPLISHMENTS HURF HURF

It sounds like they're both assholes. I mean getting someone fired for chatting at work? Of course the other dude is a dick for saying that about the computer guys. :lol

As a net admin I didn't find your story funny at all... no sir, not funny.

Is there a reason for making a "jerk off" thread with regards to getting someone fired? I guess you wanted someone to say ":lol You rule man!!!" so I'll say it for you:

":lol You rule man!!!"

so how do you know he wasnt taking his 15minute break?

From what you describe, you told him to try it. Hell, maye he HADN'T tried it from work because, y'know, the chances of getting caught would be pretty large. Maybe he looks at porn at home instead?

Had he of replied with "Yup, I've been looking up /insert website here/ every day, and nobody notices! I wank in the breakroom when nobody is watching!", then maybe you'd have a point.

I'm surprised that IT departments still wonder why everyone else treats them like shit.

Most of the people I work with like our IT department (or at least lie really well to our faces), but that's because we know what we are - CUSTOMER SERVICE. We're not there to hold our ‘l33t’ abilities over our users, and none of us would certainly make it a point to fucking try and get somebody fired for something so petty. You meet alot of really bitter people in the IT industry, people that think their purpose is to laugh about how stupid their users are and moan in contempt whenever they need help, never fully realizing that we wouldn't have our fricken' jobs without them. I know because I used to have that very attitude. Trust me, you'll enjoy life better if you change your outlook, or possibly get a job at a better place.

Dude - go back to your original thread on the bartender. You posted it on November 17th, 2004, at 2:17. That was a Wednesday afternoon. Unless you took vacation or a personal day, you had to have been at work - either on the virtual bartender site, making her ass shake, or writing about it on GAF.

And - I agree with your point about us all posting on a videogame forum - and I think its cool if you want to post on GAF about the virtual bartender while you're working. But - how do you do this - and then turn around and try to get a guy fired for IMing and logging onto a Jenna Jameson site?

And - if porn at work is such a big deal to you - then why did you entrap this guy into going to a porn site? Or - is this all just a matter of you being pissed off because this guy didn't know who you are, so now you are going to make him pay for that?

Don't do it man....I can tell that you have a conscience.....
