• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Oh yeah! A best of Capcom compilation!

I don't know if I could go back. Final Fight One on the GBA had the SF Alpha versions of Guy and Cody.
There's something to be said playing Final Fight as Cody in prison drab and handcuffs.

Final Fight, Black Tiger (Yay!), UN Sqadron (IMHO, SNES version smacks the Arcade version), 194X (Woot!), Forgotten Worlds (This is gonna rock hard), Section Z, Trojan *The nes game I finished on my first playthrough....I wasn't thrilled that I had just dropped 50 hard earned Canadian dollars on this game)

<Sniff> I just need to see some torn up Billiard tables and a haze of blue smoke and I will be right back in my childhood :P

Oh, and hopefully they don't do any sort of "you-only-get-three-credits" bullshit. You don't only get three credits in the arcade, you get as many continues as you have quarters. I guess if the game is just about getting a high score, they can limit your play time. But for Final Fight, unlimited continues or no sale.

Midway's Arcade Treasures 2 got it right -- they have 3 or 4 sets of high score tables. You can play with unlimited continues, but your score is saved in the unlimited continues high score table. If you want more of a challenge, you can choose the "expert" modes which limit continues and have their own high score tables.

If I had a choice of development teams for this, I'd pick Digital Eclipse. They seem much more competent than any of the other "classics" teams. I still find it interesting that Phantasy Star Collection on the GBA has a fully working SMS emulator for the original game.

In addition to most of the games everyone has stated, I would especially love:

Bionic Commando
Forgotten Worlds/Realms(can't remember)
Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers
Ducktales

And if the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons games were included on there I would buy one copy for each console. I love those games to death. Wish they would do a new one.

Shit, I forgot Strider. Add that one.

Any known release time? Q2? Q3? Q4? Someone's gotta know a bit more.

Sorry if this was mentioned before, but didn't Capcom make a beat-em-up based on the Three Kingdoms (Dynasty Warriors to the new folks) characters? You know, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, etc.

I'd like to see that again.

Digital Eclipse's SMS emulator in PSC was absolutely amazing. There wasn't a single hitch. Everything worked perfectly.

Yep....the series was called Warriors of Fate.

I hope they don't limit this compilation to strictly arcade titles. Don't get me wrong...I love the classic coinups from the 80's-90's but I would kill for some of their NES and SNES releases. Especially their Disney licensed platformers (yes I know...not likely to happen)

Ducktales
Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers
Adventures in the Magic Kingdom
Willow (The zelda clone)
Breath of Fire 1 (Would there be any problems from Square on this? They helped publish it I think)
Demons Quest/Crest
UN Squadron SNES (This was entirely different from the Arcade version...both deserve to be on this disc)
Sweet Home

Maybe they could release seperate sets...old home console releases, classic Arcade, and 3D arcade priced accordingly. Rival Schools, Strider 1/2, Toshinden 2 (I think they have the rights to the arcade version), etc...

Yeah a man can dream...

Already answered (btw, there is an older game that is a prequel to WOF called Dynasty Wars), but I'd like to add that I personally found it cool that you could behead/disembowel enemy generals with your uppercut moves. Very nice touch there

arcade perfect ports of final fight and strider would make me buy this, regardless of what else is or isn't included. however, a good port of magical quest starring mickey mouse would be a nice bonus. i'm assuming that won't be included due to licensing however.

Strider is already pretty perfect on PSone. (Perhaps a Strider maniac can tell us otherwise?) It comes with Strider 2.

Saturday Night Slammasters
Final Fight
Bionic Commando
Darkstalkers
19XX
Legendary Wings
Magic Sword
Strider
Buster Brothers

I hope tey do a good selection of Arcade and console games. Heck, even both maybe?

For instance, MERCS was a fantastic top-down shoot-em-up. I know they ported it over in one of those PSX or saturn collections, but the Megadrive version also had an Original mode, which IMO was just as good, if not better, than the original version.

Ive got Mercs on Master System, Genesis and PS1 Capcom Gen 4. I wish I had the Saturn version too. I loved it in the arcades.

I want:

- Graphics running in proper low-res modes (ie, with scanlines) so everything doesn't look like blurry bilinear-filtered smeary shit as in every (?) other PS2 / GCN / Xbox retro compilation released so far THAT'S ALL I ASK

So basically odds are I will be disappointed and not care about this collection. -_-; I'd be thrilled to be wrong here, though. Unlikely as that may be.

Wouldn't true low res end up looking like shit on an HDTV though?

I'd like to see an option for original res and the bilinear mess so I can pick the least offensive option depending on the TV I use.

Yes, it would. HDTVs are not equipped to maintain the integrity of low-res video input.

Which sucks.

What the developers could do is include a progressive scan mode with no filtering and simulated scanlines. (The XRGB-2 upscan converter has a fake scanline feature and it looks fairly convincing.) Of course, they could always allow the user to disable the scanlines and even turn on filtering if so desired. You know, if they were crazy.

This would all be on top of a true low-res mode for those with SDTVs and such.

I know, I'm dreaming cuz no one cares, least of all the devs.

Guys, guys.... this is Capcom. It will be horribly broken. Remember the Mega Man debacle?

I say all they're going to do is release all those Capcom Generation compilation discs on one DVD, so we'll get CPS games emulated on a PS1 running on a PS2.

They will release all these cool games but make you control them with shoulder buttons instead of d-pad/analog stick to piss you off ala Megaman.

I really hope that Capcom doesn't screw this up. The potential is here for a totally badass compilation--I would buy this set alone for a perfectly emulated Final Fight.

IÂ’d like to see a Capcomp of exclusive Dreamcast titles, like GigaWing 1 & 2, Gunbird 2, Mars Matrix, Powerstone 1 & 2, Project JusticeÂ…

All this needs is Final Fight and I'll buy it. Anything else would be icing on the cake.

Too bad some of their best beat'em up games feature licensed characters (Punisher, Aliens vs. Predator and my personal fave, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs).

Hopefully it'll include one of Capcom's often forgotten classes, 3 Wonders. It's a shame most people missed out on that one, beucase it's excellent.

The first four are technically* not Capcom titles, though. Not sure who owns what rights, but they were developed by Takumi and Psikyo.

* You can definitely forget about Gunbird 2. It was never Capcom property in any way, they just ported it to DC.

I wonder if UN Squadron would fall into the licensed camp since it's actually based on the manga/anime Area 88 which wasn't released in North America at the time, but is now.

Area 88 (the manga) was released at the time. Before UN Squadron was even released I believe. I've got tons of the old issues back home.

Edit: It was Eclipse Comics that first published Area 88 in the US.

Yeah, I have a few issues. I thought it was released after the game though.

Either way, anime/manga have come a long way since then so I'm still concerned. Hopefully UNS makes it in, I really like that game.

Do we know anything about this compilation other than it is rumored to be being made? Well, anything other than we know that Capcom will delay its release for 6 months to a year for no appearant reason.

It seems that the games I want the most are licensed games (Ducktales, Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers, UN Squadron, Aliens vs. Predator).

Where's my Mega Man X compilation?

Actually, now that I think about it, you may be right. I forgot that UN Squadron was an early title. It was near launch, so that puts it at '91 or '92, right? I don't have my issues here to check the dates, but you may be right.

Either way, I would love to see this title on the compilation.

Area 88 may no longer be licensed in North America. CPM only released the first episode on DVD back in '98, and the DVD is no longer in print. CPM also don't list Area 88 in their catalog anymore. It was never a popular series here to begin with, so CPM may have let the license lapse.

UN Squadron was released on SNES in fall of '91 if I remember right. Some time in '92 at the latest.

i remember hearing somewhere that capcom owns the rights to cave's storm of progear. imagine if that showed up. or dimahoo. hell, i'd settle for 1944. but there's no sense in winding myself up.

Interesting question. Square did translate and publish it in the US, so I guess they'd have the copyrights on that particular translation? Capcom did release the Breath of Fire GBA version, though, so they could basically copy that version's text over, I guess.

Nice to see so much UM Squadron love around here. I thought I was the only one who went nuts for it. In my mind as a kid, it was practically a RPG-shooter in structure. The arcade looked better, but the home version's play method can't be touched.

SNES UN Squadron ~ SFC Area 88 had a money system and you could replay levels over & over again to buy new planes. the arcade UN Squadron is just a straight play through shoot em up from beginning to end.

graphically the arcade version is naturally superior thanks to the CPS hardware and much larger ROM but the SNES version is better gameplay wise.

Why would they make it for the psp with all those games if they could just sell like 5 at time for smaller prices$20), hell even one at a time.

So have you spent the last week researching this?

If he did, he failed miserably, the last two screenshots are both of the arcade version... (hint: take a look at the score display on those two screens and compare them with the one on the back of the SFC box - plus, IIRC, the SNES/SFC version was 1P only, compared to the 2P simultaneous play on the arcade version)
