alright, this new version of AIM is the last straw. All of these sound effects associated with "lol", "haha", and the myriad of smilies is just annoying the hell out of me since there's apparently no way to turn them off.

What do people use as an alternative, or has anyone found a way to deactivate these annoying sound effects?

I use deadaim with an older version of aim. Still maintains all the functionality I need with users who have and have not upgraded.

My AIM -> My Options -> My Preferences

You can turn off all the sound effects there. Me, I turn everything off. I can't stand the IM sound.

Also, you may want to consider DeadAIM (http://www.jdennis.net/).

I think tabbed messaging is worth $5 myself, but there's also a bunch of free alternatives/hacks out there, including AIM Ad Hack and GAIM.

I have every sound option I can find set to off, it doesn't seem to matter and I still hear the damn sound effects.

Hmm, maybe I'll try deadAIM.
