ok.. im getting a DS, help me feel better.

First tragedy, then farce.
Seems like my parents were talked into a DS bya gamestore employee as my Xmas present. Its all but confirmed, because when my dad ever calls me up because "your uncle wants to get your cousin x, what do you think". It actually means "We allready got you this, and want to make sure we didnt drop the ball"

I told them it looks pretty good, but to be honest I dont really want it. I was gonna get a PSP, but if I get this it would hurt their feelings horribly if I got another portable system and stopped using the one they got (they were hurt when I got got an Xbox to replace the Dreamcast they bought us) Mario 64, Mario Kart, Metroid Prime: Hunters and Wario Touch all look to be decent to good, and its a gameboy advance as well (which I dont own at present) so that could be good...

but if someone could tell me what else is coming for the system that looks good, I would appreciate it.

Edit:

I want everyone to fully appreciate my parents. These people are the reason that companies have "tag lines". If an employee tells them that something is 'what everyone wants' they will believe them and get it. This is why I have a DVD player with Divx (the DVD rental service) built into it. It cost them an extra 400 dollars at the time, and lasted 3 months before it was cancelled.

Well, the GBA lineup is certainly a good place to start.

Fire Emblem/Super Mario _______/Zelda MC/Zelda ALttP/Pokemon FR/LG/R/S/E...

You have Mario 64 to look forward to playing the next 4 months. Have fun.

So, its like 1996 all over again. :lol

Thats what I was going to ask. What are the good GBA games to get (ORIGINAL games, not buying a game I played 10 years ago). I dont really want a ton of games from the same series, so if people would list the best of the castlevania games, metroid, zelda, etc.

Animal Crossing
Advance Wars

See, for me, I can stop there, and justify a purchase. For you, add every single Awesome GBA game (There's a shitload) and you could use the thing purely as a GBA for months and you'd still have an awesome system on your hands.

Tell them you want the PSP as a Multimedia device, keep the DS for gaming, and enjoy both to their fullest potentials.

And, right after we had a little post in the OT about Christmas Lists...if you didn't want a DS, should have asked for something specific. The idea of someone going around randomly searching for things I MIGHT like scares me.

Yep I think. I didn't get a N64 right when it came out, but months later when there were actual games on it. I think I'll do the same here too. Especially since there's a good shot it will drop price within the next half year.

oh yeah, I have an old gameboy (by old, I mean the grey monstrosity with the green screen).. can I use those games still?

Yeah, unfortunately the DS line up is pretty weak at the moment. Mario 64 DS is really good and has mini-games that'll keep you occupied for many days, however. Feel the Magic offers a neat diversion although it's a little on the short side and the motivation to keep playing is pretty weak (unless you like getting outfits or something). Still, it has a great visual style, some wacky music and is definitely memorable.

Other than that, though, the picture's a bit more grim. If you understand Japanese import Band Brothers and Mamwaru Made in Wario (or is it Samwaru?) for DS.

The future is more bright, but you have to wait until Feb/March before you start seeing games you'd probably want for DS.

But if you don't mind it then the up side is there's no better place to play great GBA single player games. The clarity will offer an experience that's significantly better than its SP cousin (albeit with some odd control quirks for DS... no button mapping?).

GBA games to get: Kingdom Hearts:COM came out and Minish Cap is right around the corner. Check out Fire Emblem, Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis and the other host of great GBA games

For GBA, you probably could do worse than Minish Cap / WarioWare / Kingdom Hearts / Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow / Fire Emblem.

Wario Ware Inc.
Pokemon Emerald
Mario and Luigi
Fire Emblem
Metroid Zero Mission
Zelda: The Minish Cap
Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

You can only use GBA games only, old GB games (GB/GBC) will not work in the DS.

I thought that was the case. Not a big loss, I think I had Metroid II and that puzzle game where you are a tomato trying to stop something.

Just be happy that you're getting a free system. i'm not excited about the PSP, but i wouldn't mind having one for games like Wipeout Pure and whatever else catches my eye.

If you're looking for original games out on the DS now, I'd suggest Feel the Magic or Zoo Keeper. If you feel like importing, Sawaru! Made in Wario is the way to go, as is Band Brothers if you enjoy the song list. You may also want to try Chokkan Hitofude, a puzzle game for the DS.

If that's not your style, there is a HUGE slew of GBA titles you can pick and enjoy on the system. We really don't need to relist them all, there are like 32189038019283091 GBA game topics. So just do a little searching. But my first quick suggestions would be Wario Ware, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars 1 or 2, and any of the Castlevanias.

DS Titles

Mario 64 DS
Feel the Magic
Zoo Keeper
WarioWare DS
Yoshi's Touch 'n Go

GBA Titles

Metroid: Zero Mission
Metroid Fusion
Fire Emblem
Zelda: Minish Cap
Advance Wars 1 and 2
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
Mario Golf
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Kirby and the Magical Mirror
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

This should get you started off on the right foot...

And if you're into importing games from japan:

Kuru-Kuru-Kuririn
Starfy 1-3

Actually, if you haven't played KH on PS2 (and you said you have an Xbox), then you might want to skip the GBA version... I'd imagine it's less of an experience if you don't know anything about the Kingdom Hearts universe...

No, when I troll something, its not subtle. See any post Ive made about EA sports in the last 24 hours. The title is trollish, but I was mostly looking for advice on stuff that might be worth getting, especially for the GBA... which Ive been meaning to get for a while.

Holy crap.. :lol

I remember being hyped for that game more than anything, and I never figured out why. When I got it, I hated playing it, but still loved the fact that I owned it. I was like 8, what the hell did I know?

Do you remember the story at all?

I don't know that it really had a story... It was a push the blocks type game, a la Boxxle. I think he had a girlfriend tomato though.

No, it was one of those instruction manual stories. It had no bearing on the game at all, but Im sure it was something crazy stupid.

If you want to feel better you could always send to me, I don’t have a clue when the DS is coming out in Australia so I would love a big American DS.

You would be spreading Christmas joy!

DS will get Pokémon Diamond/Pearl, and Animal Crossing. Those games are worth the price of admission. I can't wait to see what Nintendo is doing with Diamond/Pearl personally.

Advance Wars DS (DS Wars? Has there been an official name yet for this game?) is coming....thats enough to make the DS worthwhile, especially as a gift.

In the unlikely situation Advance Wars DS sucks.................Advance Wars 1 and 2 to the rescue!

Well, it's a freaking gift to begin with, so you shouldn't feel bad about it. I'm sure that the DS will get some games that will peek your interest in the near future. It's been out for less than a month afterall.

Boxxle had a story too though. I remember it even having Pac-Manesq cutscenes. You gotta help the guy get the girl!

:lol Haha, yeah. What sold me was: "I was gonna get a PSP but..."

At least be direct when trolling.

DS is the best GBA revision out there. Use it to play the old games until DS specific content catches up in quality and entertainment value.

Is this a poor attempt at a cheap shot?

why is it hard for some fanboys to accept that not everyone would appreciate a DS? I know I wouldn't. Pls santa bring me some xbox games and halo 2 action figures... but not the nasty joystudio ones but new ones that were created by some other company. thanks. much love.

I don't think this is a troll at all.

As mentioned, there are some outstanding GBA games to play, regardless of what DS-specific games are available this Christmas. Also, having the DS will give you an excuse to pass on buying the first build of PSP hardware.

Great. You have a DS that you didn't pay for -- who would take a free DS? You don't need to play it, wait for good games to come out. What's the deal?

Let me reiterate: YOU ARE GETTING A FREE DS. YOU CANNOT COMPLAIN. You don't need to feel better you spoiled little bastard.

CLOSE THIS THREAD.

Dude, do you even know how many people in europe would kill to be in your shoes.
At least be thankfull that your parents buy such a great gift for you.
There will be enough games on DS in the future that everyone will at least like a couple of.
It's not that they bought you a pet cobra or anything, at least give the DS a try you might even like it.
*i know i do*

(Sniffle Sniffle) Oh, woe is me! I'm getting a free DS! GAFfers, pity me... see how I have fallen.

I'm having a lot of fun with Mr. Driller. You might wanna look into that game if you like puzzle games. I did get the Japanese version, though, so I don't know if the US version is drastically worse or something.
